Summary: Regression in Wine 1.1.34 causes application crashes

Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: chris(a)chrobis.com
Since upgrading to 1.1.34 (previously using 1.1.33 with no issues), I have
noticed application crashes within a minute or two of the application otherwise
loading fine. Each time, a variation on the following error message appears on
the console:
err:seh:setup_exception_record nested exception on signal stack in thread 0020
eip 7bc72010 esp 7ffdbc7c stack 0x232000-0x330000
or
err:seh:setup_exception_record nested exception on signal stack in thread 0009
eip 7bc72010 esp 7ffdbc7c stack 0x232000-0x330000
are two variants.
Two applications in particular have been affected thus far:
- Star Trek: Birth of the Federation
- Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines
but thus far I have not had an issue with any other.

Project64 1.6 with input plugin N-Rage's Direct-Input8 V2 1.83 does not
recognize any buttons pressed on a usb gamepad anymore with Wine 1.1.30 (and
crashed with 1.1.29) - it works just fine with 1.1.27.
The gamepad is an original gamecube gamepad connected over a usb adapter.
I'm using Archlinux with all recent updates and a default kernel. AppDB states
that Project64 was tested recently on a similiar system but only with other
input devices.

Hello friends. I appologize for disturbing you, I hope I'm not doing anything
wrong by posting this thing here, but, I decided to try.
I've been using Debian for about a year, and I've got a bit of a problem with
an electronic dictionary which is very dear to me, since I work with texts...
It's the Houaiss Portuguese Dictionary, made for Windows.
All the other dictionaries I use run perfectly well in Wine, but this one has
got some kind of strange bug. Sometimes, when I open it, it appears as a
minimized window at the panel below. If you then click on it to maximize it,
instead of a full screen window what you get is only a very narrow strip of
window. If you click on its right-hand upper corner in order do maximize it,
nothing happens. All you can do is close it. Then, if you run the programm
again, the same thing will happen, no matter how many times you try. If you
uninstall the software and re-install it completely, usually the same thing
happens!
A friend of mine wrote a script for me which has helped, since with it I
usually can make it work again, but it's always a little bit annoying, since it
doesn't work immediately, and you have to run the scrip a thousand times before
the moody dictionary decides to work.
The scrip I've been using to fix the problem runs as follows:
#!/bin/sh
cp -a ~/.wine_working/* ~/.wine
echo "old good wine restored..."
I'm no expert al all, as you can see, so if you could help me (and probably
other portuguese speakers who use this dictionary) to definetely solve this
problem I'd really appreciate!
I thank you very much for your attention and help!
Zac

I'm pretty sure this is not a pulseaudio issue as it's been occurring for
years, though I haven't reported it until now.
In Full Tilt Poker you can hear a few sounds - a slight ding when it's your
turn, the sound of cards being delt, and chips stacking. In Wine, however,
they stop completely after about 4 or 5 hands have been played.

pol.exe refresh problem when in windowed mode
In windowed mode, when you move app's window that only part is visible, then in
this partially visible state is not correctly updated.
1) Probably nobody can explain that better than Henri
I think what happens is that the blit is rejected because it's partially
outside
the screen. While moving the window to the outside that isn't very noticeable,
but as soon as you move it back you see the now cleared parts of the window
that don't get updated until the window is fully inside the screen again.
2) Another test scenario:
When app's window is only partly visible and then resized, it becomes black.
Attachment shows the 1st test scenario (they are probably related, thus in one
bug report).

This is a feature request, not a bug.
Wine has an utterly useless "the application has crashed" window, or at least,
it had for a while, I don't know if that has changed. Anyway, I think said
window should have an unfoldable edit box containing all the terminal output of
the application up to its crash, and a button to copy the content in this edit
box. Finally, the crash description should indicate that you should copy that
text and bring it to the Wine forums in order to get help/troubleshooting.
Why? Because it makes giving feedback on Wine apps a lot quicker. A lot of us
do actually run Wine apps from the terminal, but most newbies don't, and this
is a way to assist them helping the Wine devs know about the problem a lot more
quickly than the usual routine, which is:
- Make a forum thread about how the app doesn't work, with little to no further
info;
- Have someone tell you to run in terminal;
- Possibly learn to use the terminal, then run the app from there;
- (At this point, a day may have passed) Run back to the forums with actual
terminal output.
Adding the text box with the terminal output straight into the "application
crashed" window not only makes the window actually useful, but it also
eliminates the delay that exists because new users may have to be assisted in
actually running the app from terminal.
Further notes: of course, from that point, the user may be advised as to how to
run the app from terminal anyway, but at least for this time, or for any time
when they just want to double-click an app to run, they'll get the actual log
much more quickly.

DVD Profiler's 'general' windows contains a link called 'view contributors'.
The 'general' screen appears to be a part of the application. If you follow
this link, it opens a new window showing contributions for that profile. This
screen appears to be an html page rendered in an application window. I make
this distinction because of the different performance.
The main windows of the application perform (more or less) as you would expect,
but some of the html-based windows do not function correctly. In the 'view
contributors' window, you can not scroll or follow links (although a scroll
mouse wheel will scroll the page and the icon changes as you move over a link).
If I install IE6 using winetricks, the screen allows scrolling by clicking with
the mouse, but links still do not work.

Under recent versions of Wine, after logging in successfully (using PyLOTRO),
DDO will display the loading screen, and then crash silently before the
character select screen appears.
Reproducibility: Always
Steps to reproduce:
1) Open PyLOTRO.
2) Log into game.
Expected behavior:
Loading screen appears, blue bar fills up, character select screen appears.
Actual behavior:
Loading screen appears, blue bar fills up, game shuts down, displays the
PyLOTRO output window, which displays ***FINISHED***.
After some digging, it appears that this crash may be audio-related. The bug
first appears in Wine 1.1.30, and the one Mac-related fix listed in the
changelog for that version refers to OpenAL. Also, in previous versions of
Wine, after quitting the game the message "opena32.dll - cannot find exact
match; picking first". This message does not show up in later versions.
Haven't yet found a backtrace with any telling details, but this message does
show up in my debug log, starting with version 1.1.30:
err:gsm:GSM_DriverProc libgsm support not compiled in!
I haven't tested every version in between, but the crash does occur in 1.1.43,
.44, and all of the 1.2RC's. Tested on a MacBook Pro, Core 2 Duo 2.33, Radeon
Mobility x1600, OS X 10.6.4.

GEDCOM containing only Fred Flintstone
In the Family and Pedigree tabs, the international unicode font supplied by PAF
5 displays with apparently random sizes. This symptom is new with Wine 0.9.52.
With Wine 0.9.50, font sizes were consistent. (The installer failed with Wine
0.9.51.)
To reproduce the problem, do one of the following:
First, in the Family tab, observe "Marriage" has obviously inconsistent font
sizing.
Second, create a new person, named "Fred Flintstone" and observe his name
showing with inconsistent font sizing in both the Family and Pedigree tabs.
Third, import the GEDCOM file I am about to attach. Observe Fred's name in the
Family and Pedigree tabs, plus "Marriage" in the Family tab.

I'm using an ERP client that works quite well with Wine 0.9.46.
After that version something is changed and background windows does not
correctly redraws when you close the top one.
The app uses MDI windows, so all child windows are in the main frame window
context. If you close a top level child window the back one does not redraw
itself.
It seems that invalidate regions are changed after the 0.9.46 version(an
optimization?), resulting in a wrong paint area.
Thanks,

What surprises, is that in config.h HAVE_ISINF is defined with 1. So the

If I use CFLAGS=-D__C99FEATURES__ wine compiles fine.
This behavior is also showing up on the trunk version.

I think this must be a regression in Wine 1.3. I remember some releases back
that wine and world of warcraft did the exact same thing. So until this gets
fixed i have reverted back to wine 1.1.37 where it does not have this problem.

A regression between 1.1.12~winehq0~ubuntu~8.10-0ubuntu1 and
1.1.11~winehq0~ubuntu~8.10-0ubuntu1 caused a Visual FoxPro application
(CortexEDI specifically) to incorrectly draw a list view.
The list view did not render text data in none of its rows. Because of a
peculiarity of this application, the number of rows always fill the fixed
height of the control, so I can't confirm whether the list has no rows, or all
empty rows.
Downgrading wine from 1.1.12~winehq0~ubuntu~8.10-0ubuntu1 to
1.1.11~winehq0~ubuntu~8.10-0ubuntu1 fixed the problem.
Specific application library information (any DLLs in the program directory,
etc.) available on request, just let me know what would help identify the
regression.

A small source example to reproduce the mt.exe crash
Hi All,
I've been using wine to build binaries with vc9 for a while and it's gone ok,
but I've hit some projects where I need to embed a manifest. It's doing that
that I'm hitting a problem with wine crashing. Mt.exe runs fine when called
with no arguments (just outputs help text).
I installed VC9 by copying the files over from a windows installation. I then
installed vc2008 sp1 runtime in order to fix up some issues the compiler had
finding some msvc* libraries.
I'm running Mandriva 2009.1 x86_64 and I've tried this using both it's standard
wine (1.1.17 at the moment) and compiling 1.1.30 from source (It appears to
work, but I can't be certain I did everything correctly as it pushes out a lot
of text during a run of mt.exe - mostly font stuff).
I've attached two archives. One contains the output of WINEDEBUG=+relay,+seh
wine c:/Program\ Files/Microsoft\ SDKs/Windows/v6.1//bin/mt.exe -manifest
win32/indexedTextureLookup.dll.manifest
-outputresource:win32/indexedTextureLookup.dll\;2 run on both 1.1.17 and 1.1.30
The other is a small set of source (the makefile has some extraneous stuff that
is part of the build process I put together to do cross-platform compilation
using wine and VC, but other than that it's all pretty barebones). The line(s)
in Makefile.generic which call mt.exe are commented out.
Let me know if you have any questions or if there's something I can do to help
track down this bug.
Cheers,
Alan.

The new "Allow the window manager to decorate the windows" option introduced in
Wine 0.9.60 also effects the Wine virtual desktop. When unchecked, the virtual
desktop lacks window decoration itself.
Shouldn't this option be disabled when Wine is set to use a virtual desktop?
Since all Wine apps are going to be inside the desktop, Wine already does all
the window decoration. The window decoration option should probably be grayed
out if the "Emulate a virtual desktop" option is enabled.

Terminal output
TagScanner used to work quite well in Wine. With newer builds of Wine it
doesn't run anymore. Unfortunately I can't tell exactly at what Wine version it
no more runs. Terminal throws some errors and Tagscan.exe quits.
I've tried with a clean ~/.wine directory with no difference. I'm using the
Lucid Lynx build of Wine.

bzipped console output (uncompressed size 1.3 Mbyte)
In the game PoP: SoT, in-game water effects cause the following glitches: the
screen turns to black intermittently, as you rotate the camera with the mouse.
How to reproduce the issue in the demo:
1. Start the demo, create a new profile. If you suffer from the 'fog effect'
bug, go to options and turn off 'Fog effect', but make sure 'Water effects' are
enabled.
2. Start a new game, move your character into the light (skip the video), when
your character re-appears switch to first-person view (by pressing 'F') and
turn the camera with the mouse >> see the intermittent black-outs.
During gameplay the console is flooded with the following two lines of
messages:
err:d3d_shader:shader_glsl_select >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION
(0x502) from glUseProgramObjectARB @ glsl_shader.c / 4718
err:d3d_shader:shader_glsl_load_constants >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from glUniform4fvARB @ glsl_shader.c / 757
Workaround: disable in-game water effects or disable pixel shader support in
winecfg's Graphics tab.

Whiteness in Sim City 4 Deluxe city view
Sim City 4 installs and runs in software rendering mode but has severe
graphical glitches in hardware rendering mode. In hardware mode fog/smoke is
rendered in a blocky manner and the entire terrain is white so it is very
difficult to distinguish anything. In addition, rendering performance is very
slow in hardware mode. In software mode the game is very responsive. I have
encountered this problem in release candidates 1-4. I was unable to install it
at all using one of the 9.5x versions so overall there has been improvement.
I have attached a screenshot of the city view which is most affected by the
glitch. The cityscape is supposed to be mostly green and brown. Region view has
blocky fog but no whiteness.

Tested on AutoCAD 2005 and AutoCAD 2008, after installation following
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13799 guidelines.
Working on a drawing with many texts/quotes zooms/scrolls/pans becomes
painfully slow. Bug concerns just texts, NOT images or other drawing elements.
I suppose is a performance problem on gdi, but not sure about.

Summary: Left 4 Dead 2 Sound Drop
Product: Wine
Version: 1.2-rc6
Platform: x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P1
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: tumpster84(a)gmail.com
The sound drop is likelier to happen when you either rescued (by incap or fall)
or you rescue someone else. You expect the rescue sound to play, but it
doesn't, and then most sounds don't play. This or after you rescue someone
parts of the sound will drop, i.e. you can hear a gun firing but rain drops and
voices cannot be heard. There are other instances where this also occurs (like
luck), but the rescue one is the most reliable one to reproduce. Maps like the
Passing and Dark Carnival, and game types like realism have a higher chance as
well. I have not noticed any trends on weapons (melee or guns) and items, or
characters (survivors or infected).
If you turn on captions and play the game, you expect to see readable words.
When the sound problems occur, you'll see garbage appear in the captions
whenever a sound event happens. You could play with the sound drop until:
- you get kicked off the server (even your own) and get the Server not able to
authenticate message
- there is a round change, then the game "breaks", and you'll have to kill
left4dead2.exe and/or crashes back to desktop.
- you take the initiative, quit, and restart the game before the first two
happen

Hack to remove display-flaws in ProjectOne
After installing and running the software, the pixels in the zoom-mode and the
grid are all black. So, you can paint, but will see the results in the overview
window only. Selecting View->Palette shows also black boxes instead of the
C64-colors.
I took this opportunity to get started with wine-hacking, and finally came up
with the attached patch, which removes the above flaws. It is based on git as
of yesterday, but I could also apply it to 1.1.28 which I had installed on
another computer. The problem itself was noticed way earlier, maybe pre 1.0.0,
but I can't give exact numbers here. I am aware this is not a true fix; still
it should be a good hint where differences between wine and Windows are. I am
afraid my (yet) lacking windows-skills won't take me much further, so I'll file
this as a bug-report now. I will also attach screenshots before/after the patch
later.
Note that this program was coded by a friend of mine and I do have the
sourcecode. If worthwhile, I can ask him for allowance to give the source to
interested wine-developers (but beware of hackish, first-time VB-code ;)) or
just ask me for details, if needed.

I got a UHA SFX.
The first thing to notice is that the SFX starts fine, the file checksum pass.
But after you choose the directory to extract the files then application get
graphical corrupted. You're still able to press "Extract" button, but it does
nothing.
Still you can uncompress the SFX in this way:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=4003&iTestingI…
$wineconsole cmd
$uharc.exe e uha-sfx-file.exe
(decompress nicely)
There's no console output when running the SFX, so I don't know what WINEDEBUG
channels would be appropriated to use in this case?
