Wine can not crash the X-server. It is a driver bug, not a Wine bug.

Kubuntu 11.04, running Wine 1.3.20 with winepulse (ppa:c-korn). Dead Space 2
was downloaded via Steam and is as such up-to-date.
Since 1.3.20, and likely due to the changes to mouse clipping in that version,
the cursor jumps about furiously in Dead Space 2. Every one second precisely,
the cursor takes a jump toward the nearest edge of the screen if you're moving
it at that instant. Likewise it takes a jump whenever you click a mouse button.
The game becomes unplayable.
Noteworthy is that the game does not seem to theme and use Xorg's own cursor
("hardware cursor"), but rather hides the real one and draws its own one
in-game.
The behavior disappears if I downgrade Wine to 1.3.19. Toggling "Automatically
capture the mouse in full-screen windows" on or off does not seem to make a
difference.

Summary: Gothic III: Flickering black/textured polygones at some

Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.15
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: directx-d3d
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: svenbrauch(a)googlemail.com
At some places in the world of Gothic III, especially at towns (places with
many objects), there are polygones in the air which are either black or
textured. They are not "steady", changing the camera view and moving the hero
makes them flicker, move or change. Textured polygones are more steady and more
solid than black ones.
Looking at these polygones decreases performance of the game, the more of them
is visible, the lower the performance.
I *think* (im not sure) the appearing of these polygones is related to this
error message:
fixme:d3d_shader:shader_glsl_select >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION
(0x502) from glUseProgramObjectARB @ glsl_shader.c / 3584
which obviously doesn't say much (... or does it do?).
The polygones appear with both fbo and backbuffer offscreen rendering method.
With fbo, performance decrease is, as far as i can see, worse.
The problems are acceptable in the desert, in the ice part of the world, and
generally outside towns; towns in myrtana are kind of unplayable, full of these
things. Here's a screenshot:

crash log when run without setting WINEDEBUG
I have been running its version 3 (which I have created an entry in Wine's
AppDB) with Wine for over a year with basically no problem. Lately, the program
is upgraded to version 4 and it crashes with Wine. I tried to print out debug
messages but can't seem to get any clue about what is wrong. While I was
testing with the debug messages, an interesting thing I found is that if I run
it with the following debug setting, it runs.
WINEDEBUG=relay wine tradeblazer.exe >& test.log
I found that the program has 2 processes running (same as version 3) -- one
main program and one data server. I am guessing the comms between the 2
processes in version 4 have some syncing problem. With WINEDEBUG=relay, Wine
writes a lot of data to disk, so one process is delayed and somehow helps with
the syncing.
Attached is a log file run without setting WINEDEBUG.

Free game to download, and has penguins, so it must be awesome :).
Accept the license and start the installation. Immediately, get an error box:

Ignoring the error, you'll get 3 more errors, all related to sound dlls
(codec_oggvorbis, codec_wav, output_dsound, output_winmm). After that,
installation seems okay, but the game doesn't run (which may or may not be
related to this bug).
Starting the game gives an error dialog saying:

then:
Initialization failed
but I'll hold off on filing a bug for that until this one is fixed.

gold is a new replacement for ld which is much faster
(doesn't matter too much for wine, but it helps some

Installing gold as the system linker, e.g. by installing binutils-gold
in Ubuntu Koala, and then building wine, fails with
/usr/bin/ld: -init: unknown option
Presumably this is gold's fault, but it'd be nice to have confirmation.

Hello,
--- quote ---
Is it possible to now why "it's Hard" to fix ?
Is it due to various unimplemented methods ?
--- quote ---
Well HackShield is wrapped with Themida software protection.
It's very sophisticated (has its own virtual machine/code + API emulation).
Various versions of this protection scheme are simply _broken_ for Wine beyond
fixing.
Although the company acknowledges Wine existence somehow by adding _some_ Wine
compatibility fixes, there is some intrusive stuff that can't be implemented by
simple means (if ever).
That 108 error is Themida related, most likely it encountered inconsistency
during VM/API emulation.
Don't know if AhnLab updates their malware with newer - more 'Wine friendly'
Themida versions ... thought that might happen very rarely.
Basically to work on HackShield you have to defeat (unwrap) Themida protection
first.
It can be done but this target requires a considerable knowledge and serious
waste of time.

@Jacques-Pascal Deplaix: I find that the crazy mouse jumping goes away in CoD4
if you untick the option to allow fullscreen applications to grab the mouse.
Although I guess it is true that this bug is resolved, I suspect it could be
improved further. With 1.3.17 + xinput2 patch, there was no crazy mouse
jumping, and auto-clipping was automatically enabled when the application
wanted to use the mouse to let the player control his character, but disabled
when you went back into the menus, so eg in Crysis you could press the escape
key and go to another (Gnome) window.

Since most games appear to be working, I think it's safe to mark this bug
fixed. Keep in mind, there are a few more open bugs, namely bug 27156, which
sounds like the problem most people are having with crazy jumping (Half
Life/Bioshock/etc.).
Any other problems should be tracked in separate bugs (check for dupes first).
If the behavior is different from a previous version of Wine, please run a
regression test before filing a bug:

I'm not sure if there's a way to "unlink" an application from a bug, but this
issue is also fixed with Fallout 3 in Wine 1.3.20.

STALKER: Clear Sky is also improved with git master. You still need to start
the game with "-i" to get any mouse movement at all, but now there's no need to
toggle this option on and off the get mouse movement in the inventory screen.

To have 360 rotation work properly, yes this option will need to be ticked. It
enables cursor clipping.
