After some testing I noticed that "97.109.101.46" is in fact a part of the
hostname : "ame.". Further digging has shown that the application is using a
very nasty way to get the first ip address of the hostent struct by adding 0x28
to the returned pointer value.
The current way wine allocates the struct memory does not fit in this behaviour
so it causes the bug. That's why the target ip differs for different server
hostnames.
I'm working in a possible solution, I hope to give more news next week.

Bug #: 30357
Summary: Battle.net System Check tool detects strange OS
version
Product: Wine
Version: 1.5.0
Platform: x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: wanderer(a)fastmail.fm
Classification: Unclassified
Blizzard Battle.net System Check program is used to create a "Beta Profile" on
Battle.net, i.e., to become eligible for consideration for entry into
Blizzard's new-game beta testing by filing a report of one's system
configuration.
When run under Wine, the current version of this program detects the OS version
as "Windows 2.5.1.2600 (Service Pack 3)". To the best of my awareness, this
version of Windows does not exist, and has never existed.
It seems to me that the program should either detect a version of Windows
within the valid range for the one as which Wine is set to run (which in my
case is "Windows XP"), or detect the OS under which Wine is being run (which in
my case is a variant of Linux), with possibly an added tag indicating the use
of Wine.
I can see how the latter could be undesirable in "fully transparent
compatibility" terms, at least as a default behavior. However, I see no reason
not to do the former.
Additionally, I would like for there to be an option to explicitly set the OS
version which Wine will report to checks such as this - including manually
setting it to a relatively arbitrary value, and/or pulling the OS version from
the host system in some way. I actually expected there to already be some
degree of customization available in this regard, but on poking around a bit, I
haven't been able to find it.
I apologize if this is intentional behavior; I have not been able to find any
discussion of the Windows version which Wine reports to applications.

I have downloaded the game and managed to get the error. There seems to be
nothing wrong in wine, the gethostbyname returns the correct ip address but the
game uses that other wrong ip. Maybe some sort of stack corruption or hook that
is not working. I'm still studying.

Ack, a correction to 5 above.
5. The game slows down, but the 3d stellar system part never shows, just a
black screen. Nevertheless, I can still quit the game. The mouse however,
blinks like mad and leaves a breadcrumb trail all over the screen. The same
with the menus or other windows. If I click on them and then close them they do
not disappear.

error log for Space Empires V
Sorry, for posting another bug report but managed to trim down things even
more. First, made a new, clean virtual wine install by setting WINEPREFIX.
1. Just to recall: Kubuntu Oneiric fully patched. Wine 1.4 fully patched to the
latest version in the wine ppa. GeForce 9300M GS graphic card with the nouveau
drivers (that is, not using nvidia proprietary drivers).
2. Space Empires V patched to 1.79. This time I registered the key upon
executing the program - my guess is that previously failed because I had
installed and then uninstalled, but cruft about the registration was left
hanging in the registry database. No significant errors on the log files.
3. Using amstream and quartz dll native overrides.
4. In the Data/Settings.txt set Allow Music to False.
5. Now I *can* start a new game, e.g. via Quick Start, but it starts slowing
down to a crawl, complains about missing files and finally halts completely.
6. The error log is attached. It is a looong list of
err:d3d_surface:surface_download_data Trying to read back converted surface
0x18dd20 with format WINED3DFMT_B8G8R8X8_UNORM.
with the occasional lines
err:xvidmode:ComputeGammaFromRamp inverted or flat gamma ramp (0->0),
rejected
fixme:d3d_surface:surface_cpu_blt Filter WINED3D_TEXF_LINEAR not supported
in software blit.
ALSA lib pcm.c:7316:(snd_pcm_recover) underrun occurred
interspersed. Deleted all that to trim down the log file to a nice size.

Tested with wine 1.5.1 and it works ok. As Bruno stated it works with the
keyboard too. Joystick is recognized and axis and buttons seemed to work. As
far as the original bug goes I say it's fixed.

Bug #: 30177
Summary: EVE Online doesn't launch with default settings
Product: Wine
Version: 1.4
Platform: x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: minor
Priority: P2
Component: msvcrt
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: phoenix(a)mail.ru
Classification: Unclassified
I encountered this issue with EVE Online game, so will use it as example. Repro
steps:
1) Download following files (more than 5 GB if i remember correctly):
http://content.eveonline.com/351477/EVE_Online_Installer_351477.exehttp://content.eveonline.com/351477/eveonline_351477_1of2.7zhttp://content.eveonline.com/351477/eveonline_351477_2of2.7z
2) Run installer. Given that payload files are in the same folder, it should
run smoothly.
3) Attempt to launch EVE/bin/ExeFile.exe with default settings
Result:
In my case it prints generic runtime error, but saw multiple reports that R6034
error is printed. Game crashes during loading process.
Resolutions used in community:
msvcr100 library is added to overrides with builtin then native load order.
Additional data:
msvcr100.dll and msvcp100.dll libraries are included in EVE/bin folder.
Installing vcrun2010 through wintricks doesn't work around this issue
Few speculations:
Most likely it has to do something with library loading specification. Probably
wine requires MSVC 2010 runtime libraries to be loaded via manifest only. While
it seems to be true for 2005 and 2008, according to MSDN:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms235560(v=vs.80).aspxhttp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms235560(v=vs.90).aspx
There's no such specification and corresponding error code for 10.0 (2010).
These libraries should be allowed to be used by executable when placed into its
folder.
