As a workaround, putting Verdana.ttf in the Fonts directory fixes the problem. I use a git version of wine and fontforge is well installed. Wine 1.5.1 runs well enough. When joining multiplayer campaigns via a direct ip connection, while joining before the start of the first match is reliable and staying in the campaign as the matches progess, I can not rejoin a game in progess with the in-game error "Sorry, you are not authorized by STEAM to play this game at this time." It appears that this error plagues everybody across the board.
