Also they need to be renamed to .dll, otherwise they won't be loaded by wine.

Also note that for the patch to work the DirectDrawRenderer=gdi must be set, as
far as I interpreted the former version of the patch.

ddrawhack for wine 1.9.2
This is a backport of the patch I found somewhere to build wined3d.dll and
ddraw.dll with wine 1.9.2. The result is the known buggy menu that only
animates on mousebove in case of Diablo 1, but I can play the game with it
which is a start. The flip buffer shouldn't be black though but start with the
base image, however I have no idea how this could be achieved in the code as
I'm not familiar with the codebase.
I copied the two modified dll.so files to the game directory and as a proof,
here's a screenshot [0].

Partial screen shot showing the problem
I'm running Iceweasel (Debian's version of Firefox) 38.5.0 with NoScript (and
RequestPolicy). The winehq.org website has always worked up until this week
when it was changed.
When JavaScript is disabled (which I have set as a default), the Bugzilla and
Forums buttons are no longer accessible due to the search bar overlapping them.
Even without JavaScript, it shouldn't be too hard to better position the search
box (which is less valuable than the Bugzilla and Forums links it is hiding).
As a worst-case scenario, if changing the positioning for some reason is not
possible, the z-index should likely be adjusted so the search goes underneath
the buttons.

The above three projects all provides wine packages/ports.
They should be mentioned in my opinion.

There are installation instructions on this page for ubuntu ppa setup:
https://www.winehq.org/download/ubuntu
If someone uses a pure 64bit ubuntu, the command:
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
is required before wine installation could work.
If you leave this step out, apt will complain when installing wine, that
wine1.7 depends on wine1.7-i386 but thats uninstallable...
This page is about resolving an another problem, but the first step mentions
this:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/697648/how-to-fix-installation-wine-on-ubunt…
I believe the installation instructions should be clear on this step, as wine
do depend on this setting, so it should be mentioned both on the gui and the
cli part.
Best wishes!

Summary: Wine does not install correctly on Mint 13 MATE
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux

Mint 13 ≃ Ubuntu 12.04 + Cinnamon + Mate 14.0
Tested on Mate.
The installation procedure described at http://www.winehq.org/download/ubuntu
does not work correctly because ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa produces a reference to a
distribution name "maya" (instead of "precise" for Ubuntu).
See http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30883#c6
There is no Wine menu.
I have hacked one by adding the contents of
/etc/xdg/menus/applications-merged/wine.menu
to
~/.config/menus/mate-applications.menu
