Hello,
I have an issue with wine when I use it on FL Studio (x64), I can't play any of
the wav files with the program. I tried many things in order to get it working
but I'm no wine expert.
Launching FL Studio in a terminal doesn't give me a lot more information, but
it seems like it is a system-wide issue since I tried to play a wav directly
with wine (and a windows soft called Gspot) and it doesn't work indeed I've got
a "unable to render the audio" issue.
Also if I try to open a media file (mp3 or wav, I did not test other formats)
with foobar2000 it doesn't work. Error "Unrecoverable playback error: Audio
data format not supported by this device (0x88780064)" while playing a wav
file.
Anyone has any clues on how to troubleshoot this issue? I file this as a bug
but maybe there is a codec issue or something.
Regards.

I would like to use a cards reader (twin30
http://medprice.fr/lecteur-carte-vitale-fixe/lecteur-sesam-vitale-twin30-us…)
on linux with a windows programm.
The cards reader is a native serial device but it solds with a USB-serial
converter.
For testing the cards reader, i use a little programme named cpgesw32.exe.
On windows, it works.
On linux, it works with the equivalent program for linux.
So my card reader works on linux.
Now i want testing my cards reader with cpgesw32.exe on linux with wine.
The cards reader freeze after several seconds.
So i look the source code of wine.
The freeze of the device happens with the command
KERNEL32.WriteFile(0000004c,0033f2a4,00000009,0033f13c,00000000).
To continue, i used an usb sniffer. Before the freeze, the cpgesw32's program
call several command :
KERNEL32.GetCommState(0000004c,003552c0)
KERNEL32.SetCommState(0000004c,003552c0)
KERNEL32.GetCommTimeouts(0000004c,0033f8f8)
and others.
When KERNEL32.GetCommState(0000004c,003552c0) is called, the wine programm
launch :
- get_baud_rate
- get_line_control
- get_hand_flow
- get_special_chars
With the sniffer, i noticed that only the first command (get_baud_rate)
transmit a packet on the usb. After that, nothing on the usb port before the
WriteFile.
I noticed that if i open a connexion with my serial-usb device, only one
command works. If i want a second command, i need to close the conexion and
reopen it.
I suppose this is the object of the "server_get_unix_fd" function for wine.
So,
- is everyserial device works like that (one command by connexion) or is it
only my device ?
- is someone can help me on the "server_get_unix_fd" function ?
Thank you and sorry for my english (french speaker).

In-game graphics settings window
Falcon 4 BMS runs with a very low framerate(5-7 FPS as reported by the in-game
FPS indicator) in Wine 1.3.32. However, in Wine 1.2.3, the game runs at 20-23
FPS.
The scene used for the tests was the same(default "Korea" theater, game was
started using "instant action" > "commit" button). Attached is a screenshot of
the settings window, the settings used were exactly the same for both Wine
versions.
I would just use 1.2.3 for the time being if it wasn't for a annoying bug,
where switching to another window while the game is being played(Alt+Tab)
causes the gameplay window to turn black(on menu windows, this doesn't happen).
This does not happen on 1.3.32.

The Console log after a crash during the black screen after the opening video.
Fallout 3 Game of the Year Edition will crash in semi-random places when
starting a New game. Some of these places include the black screen right after
the opening video, after inputting the player's name, after customizing the
character, During the Birthday scene when you are shooting the radroach with
your BB Gun, etc. It seams to be a script executing error as the game is
usually supposed to be doing something (ie. controlling the radroach so it
doesn't attack the player, moving an NPC somewhere, setting game values(player
name, how the player looks) when it stops. The Game has two different crashes
for these events, but only one shows at anytime. The first one is obvious and
the rarest a Message box pops up saying the Program encountered an error an
needs to close. A stacktrace is able to be retrieved in this case. The second
one is a freeze, ie the game is no longer controllable by the user, and the
render has stopped. Music and sound effects (such as talking) still work until
the program is killed, but the player cannot make any sound effects such as
walking or shooting a gun. The game's menus are also disabled.
I've followed the hq's guides on getting the program to run, with the small
exception of manually installing the Games for Windows Live client and .Net
Framework. As the game's installer hangs when the installer for those
components have crashed, and thus must be killed to allow the installer to
continue.
It must be noted that a save game made after Vault 101 will work normally. It's
unknown if it's the result of the save being from another computer with the
game running normally or just after Vault 101 because i can't get the game past
Vault 101 when starting a new game.

It no longer seems to be possible to draw green annotations in Chessbase 11. To
do this hold down alt and click (and move the mouse for an arrow). Alt + shift
and alt + ctrl (red and yellow) appear to work still. This could be an effect
of the window manager (KDE) as alt and mouse moves the window and that appears
to be happening, but surely the Windows behaviour should be the default if
actioned on a windows application?
This used to be possible.

We are trying to use IE8 in Wine for accessing an Intranet application that is
also based on ActiveX components. I was positively surprised to see that
everything works smoothly, except for this crash that seems to happen
consistently.
Obviously I have no way to make this application available for testing, as I am
only a user and I've got no control over the deployment.
The crash occurs when I load a specific type of page in the app, with forms
that display file attachments and normally would let me upload attachments -
not with normal HTML forms but through the ActiveX controls, AFAICT. This stuff
works normally under Windows.

Terminal output Wine 1.9.15-272-g0b49495
While testing the latest git version of Wine with this game, I noticed that
there is the following terminal output when starting the game:
err:module:import_dll Library libcef.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\GOG
Games\\Into the
Stars\\Nebraska\\CefRuntime\\Binaries\\Win64\\CefFramework.dll") not found
Some basic googling shows that this might be a .DLL related to Chrome but I am
not 100% sure.
If this bug is invalid, please let me know. Terminal output attached

On wine/radeonsi, payday 2 has broken lighting, and objects have no shadows.
This doesn't make the game unplayable. It's just objects have no shadows.
Gallium Nine has light working.
While trying to fix a bug with Gallium Nine textures of some parts of the road,
I tested different configuration of input channels / default values for empty
channels for the textures used by the game.
In particular for depth stencil formats, like D3DFMT_D24S8 used by the game, we
have the depth on r, the stencil on g, and b=0 a=1
I don't remember what different combinations I tried for this format, but
basically when different from that, I got broken lights exactly like wine.
Which makes me think wine probably doesn't handle this format correctly.
If you want to reproduce we have a server with the trace (too big to put here -
taken with apitrace), come on our channel (#d3d9) to ask for access.

Hello,
some old games do not have a resolution bigger than 640x480.
For example:
Shivers
The longest journey
Motoracer
..
and the modern displays does not have a 4:3 ratio, so it is not possible to put
this games in fullscreen or the games will be stretch. Some modern screens do
not even support this resolution.
Do you plan to add a scaling feature to wine?

After installing Wine, Notepad became the default handler for .txt files.
Double-clicking on a .txt file from Nautilus or Unity Dash launches Notepad,
which is definitely not what I want. Notepad is one of the worst editors out
there, and I had Kate and Geany installed.
In Ubuntu, Default Applications doesn't show an entry for Text files, so it's
not easy to undo this change.

1. Install Adobe Flash Player 20 NPAPI

2. Attempt to load the control panel applet via "wine control" or directly
with:
wine rundll32 shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL

3. Result: Exits silently. No Wine messages.
There is a "Settings Manager" (…/drive_c/windows/system32/FlashPlayerApp.exe)
that works normally. I don't know how its feature set compares to the applet.

While playing "Desperados: Dead or Alive" all input will lag for a few seconds
after loading a saved game or resuming the game from the pause menu. It looks
like all input is cached during that time and then executed all at once.
The issue can be reproduced with the demo, obtainable from the Internet Archive

1. Install the demo in a clean prefix;
2. (Optional) Copy the attached savegame folder to "Desperados Demo/Game/Data";
3. Start the demo;
4. Load the savegame from 2. or start a new game;
5. Press "Esc" and click "Continue";
6. Moving the mouse or pressing a keyboard shortcut will have no effect for a
few seconds.
I've tested this issue on Arch Linux with wine stable 1.7.53 and with the
current git head, wine-1.7.53-183-g12111d8.

Screenshot showing performance between old and newer Wine versions.
Wine 2.0 (with Staging patches) was the last version to run this game at a good
performance, From 2.1 up to 3.0rc5 it results in a major framerate loss in
every aspect of the game. The staging versions (up to 2.21) perform the same as
"non staging" Wine.
While no other of my tested games were affected, it looks as if something in
CSMT was changed and affected this particular title. I've tested this across
multiple system configurations and the results are always the same.
Considering how much this game struggles to maintain a playable framerate, a
loss of 15-25 frames (depending on the situation) is a bit excessive.
Screenshot attached, showing the frames difference in an instanced area of game
where the performance can easily be used as a "benchmark".

Screenshot of Winecfg on Windows
I'm able to run Winecfg on real Windows and I discovered that there is a
graphic glitch in the about dialog.
See attached screenshot for details.
I was able to fix this problem in about.c, by adding DI_MASK flag in the call
of DrawIconEx(), which it is also the correct thing to do in this case.
But strangely, this graphic bug does not happen when winecfg runs in WINE
(that's why probably nobody noticed the absence of the DI_MASK flag).
I would suggest to check and compare a bit the behaviour between Windows and
WINE against the functions DrawIconEx() and LoadImageW() since it seems to me
that there is a difference from the correct result.
NOTE: When it runs on the real Windows, because the presence of a SysLink
inside the resource dialog, Winecfg requires to be linked with commctrl v6, so
it needs a manifest file, as explained here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb773175%28v=vs.85%…
Another thing, but less important, is that the resource compiler refused the
icon of the application, saying the icon is made with the old DIB format and,
for this reason, it has been discarded; that's why my screenshot shows the app
without the icon in the upper left corner. But hopefully, this can be solved
easily if someone wants.

AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: dank(a)kegel.com
The installer for the app I'm looking at now
checks for the visual c++ 2008 runtime, and runs
D:\\Redistributable\\vcredist_x86_en.exe if it wasn't found.
Now, one of these days, Wine's builtin msvcr / msvcp is going to suffice
for this and most other apps, at which point Wine might want to set
the registry to indicate that vcrun2008 is already installed.
This might be in the distant future, depending on how many apps need
the other things that come with the runtime package, like mfc and a full
msvcp, that wine does not yet provide. So this bug will likely remain
open for a long time (if it's not closed for being too far ahead of its time).
For the record, this seems to be how the app is checking whether vcrun2008
is installed:

Johannes Kroll reported in wine-patches that the KORG Kontrol Editor software
hung after sending an ill-formed SysEx via winealsa's midiOutLongMsg.
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2013-January/121335.html
The MIDIHDR data is F0 ... F7 00 00 00 (125 bytes).
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-devel/2013-February/098852.html
He observed that no hang occurs when skipping the trailing 3 zero bytes. F7 is
the "End Of SysEx" (EOX) marker.
It is still unclear what happens. MIDI HW is expected to skip over bogus
bytes, thus the zero bytes should cause no harm. OTOH, ALSA might be getting
into trouble processing ill-formed messages, and we don't know if or how many
bytes ALSA actually sent out through the serial port.
In any case, midiOutLongMsg handling in Wine needs fixes.
- winealsa should extract the F0...F7 part and send that as a SysEx.
- More generally, midiOutLong is known to accept not only SysEx packets, but
also coalesced status messages. Some MIDI authors prefer to send e.g. chords
via one LongMsg rather than successive calls to midiOutShortMsg, arguing that
it's faster. Hence all Wine MIDI drivers need to decompose midiOutLongMsg into
packets consisting of status message, regular SysEx ... and possibly junk.
- All APIs (MS, ALSA, OSS, CA) acknowledge the existence of divided SysEx. As
a result, framing SysEx with F0 ... F7 is entirely under application control.
The current winealsa framing code is simply wrong.
- winecoreaudio always declared 3 bytes for short messages, even program
change.
I have written a sequence of patches to fix all of this. The only thing that
is unclear is how to encapsulate garbage data like the above 3 zero bytes or
real time messages with ALSA. What ALSA API function and what ALSA message
type to use? Heck, I'm not even sure winealsa.drv/midi.c:modData is ok to send
a 2-byte MTC quarter frame via snd_seq_ev_set_sysex instead of using a
primitive that sets the type SND_SEQ_EVENT_CLOCK/TICK.

Currently wine plays the introduction video but after that it hangs and only
resumes when a few keystrokes and/or mouse clicks are performed.
The problem seems related to quartz but since I'm not sure the component is not
set yet. The video playback ends but it looks like quartz does not recognize
that and keeps waiting for things to happen.
Last lines from the quartz log:

winepath-test.sh
WINEPATH seems to have some undocumented limits, which cause the in-windows
PATH to be corrupted.
One limit, around 969 characters, causes the PATH to drop the suffix that's
usually appended (C:\windows\system32;C:\windows;C:\windows\system32\wbem).
Another limit, around 1025 characters, causes the PATH to entirely ignore
what's in WINEPATH.
I'm not sure why these limits exist-- can't Windows support arbitrarily long
PATHs? (I've routinely seen huge PATHs on Win7/Win10.)
The attached winepath-test.sh makes a WINEPATH of various sizes and then echos
the size and the %PATH% in the cmd shell.
The output looks like:

I am not sure if wine supports _NET_WM_PING [0]. However, if it does, it should
be able to emulate _NET_WM_PING pong for some time if application running under
Wine is not responding.
Otherwise, most VM (mutter from GNOME Shell for example) gonna show up window
about not responding application (even if application is loading or just
finished loading) which could destabilize application itself (especially when
in full screen).
Could be seen in: Battlefield 2, World of Warcraft and probably plenty of other

run `winetricks vcrun6` (bug 27109). Install as normal, all defaults. Run the
game, and ignore the messed up launcher graphics (bug 30975). Click the bottom
right gray button to get in game. A splash screen will show, and shortly after,
crash.
With native quartz, it gets slightly further (potentially bug 16733, but it's
hard to tell). If you add in native devenum, then you can get to the point
where it wants to download a patch.
So, winegstreamer is lacking here. I'll attach its output.

These are needed to support Japanese applications.
On Windows there is MS Gothic which is duplicated as MS PGothic and MS UI
Gothic. The later have the Latin range proportional, the first one has the
Latin range fixed width but I suspect these are really the same font with
different spacing.
There is also MS Mincho (and MS PMincho with proportional Latin). This differs

Log file demonstrating no playback and no audio devices
Engine Prime is a music preparation application targeted at DJs who use Denon's
latest hardware. It can be downloaded at http://www.denondj.com/engineprime
Engine Prime 1.0.0 starts up successfully if d3dcompiler_46.dll and
d3dcompiler_47.dll are disabled. If a track is added to the collection, and
then played, there is no playback. No errors are recorded.
Steps to reproduce:
* Clean wine prefix.
* Install Engine Prime 1.0.0 (link above)
* Copy an MP3 file of your choice to somewhere under drive_c.
* Copy another MP3 file of your choice to somewhere else on your filesystem
accessible via a drive mapped in Wine, e.g. the Z: drive
* Start Engine Prime as follows:
env WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3dcompiler_46.dll=d;d3dcompiler_47.dll=d" wine
~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files\ \(x86\)/Engine\ Prime/EnginePrime.exe
* Navigate to the filesystem browser
* Choose an example track (at the time of writing, the file must be under C:
drive - see bug #43651)
* Right-click, choose Add To Collection
* Double-click the file to load it into the deck
* Allow track analysis to complete if it is still going
* Press play
Expected outcome: the track plays
Actual outcome: the application does not play the track, nor give any
indication that it is playing or trying to play the track
Additional observations:
* Navigate to the Preferences screen (the cog icon in the top right)
* Observe that the "Default Device" for audio output is selected, but no info
about bit depth or sample rate are shown.
* Testing sound through winecfg demonstrates that sound does work in other wine
applications
A terminal log capture is attached. The only line which suggests anything
suspicious is the following, which is printed 20 times in a row when the
application first starts up:

The problem sounds similar to bug #40833: audio works in the cutscenes, intro
videos, but not in the menus and in the main game.
The differences are:
- Mass Effect doesn't make use of Xaudio/Xaudio2 but Openal (the game comes
bundled with native openal32.dll and wrap_oal.dll)
- the proposed patch from bug #40833 doesn't fix the problem.
I reproduced the problem with ALSA and Pulseaudio as well.
Possible workarounds:
- force Wine to use the built-in openal32. Audio works with that (the game
recognizes the audio device as 'Generic Software').
- when using the native openal32, edit BIOEngine.ini and change the line in
section [ISACTAudio.ISACT.AudioDevice]
DeviceName = Generic Software
For some reason, the game always tries to use 'Hardware acceleration' for sound
when using native openal32.dll that comes with the game.
FWIW, audio used to work in the game before

openal32: Prefer native version.
Because openal contexts are global per-process, applications that use
openal will conflict with Wine DLLs that use openal like xaudio2_7 now
does. Windows does not ship an openal32, so all applications that use
openal will ship their own copy of it. According to Chris Robinson,
Windows native openal32 works fine in Wine, so we should just use that
to avoid the problem.

log output of wine game.exe
The game seems to try to start a video next, the screen fades to black and it
crashes with a page fault error.
I suspect that the issue is in quartz since a stub warning occurs just before
the game crashes.
The log file was created by launching the game loading a save file right before
the transition and clicking to advance to next screen.

I've been noticing this in many games although could never confirm where the
issue was coming from, many games would just crash after a period of time.
Recently been investigating this issue and it seems to affect a lot of titles.
The games in question would work perfectly until at some point they will just
crash with an error.
The worst ones so far are - Legend of Grimrock 2 and Race Driver: GRID
Meanwhile there are the ones which will work fine (sometimes even a couple of
hours), then crash when they reach 4GB Virtual Memory used, examples are:
Path of Exile
Dragon Age: Origins
NecroVisioN
It is worth noting that reducing the graphics details also reduces the amount
of virtual memory used and prolongs the crash.
I noticed another old bug report such as this:
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10778 maybe it's somewhat related.

Hi,
Bullet Storm Full Clip Edition works when you disable all the ingame videos
which will otherwise break the game. You need to add: -nostartupmovies
to the Steam startup option, then you will be able to get to the menu. To get
into the missions, you need to disable the videos alltogether:
bForceNoMovies=True
in StormPCCookedEngine.ini and StormEngine.ini. Those files are located in
"~/My Games/Bulletstorm Full Clip Edition/StormGame/Config"
Using the built-In dlls:
After you get to the menu you will notice that the overall sound is loud while
klicking things is to silent. In the missions the overall environemnt sound is
to loud while voice are barely noticable, also gun fire is barely noticable.
Changing the sound volumes in the options menu also does not work.
Using native xaudio dlls:
Sound is fine in the menu now, you can adjust the sound volume levels. Loading
a savegame sadly leads to a complete loss of sound, Starting a new mission will
have sound but without savegames that is useless.
If you need any special debugoutput, please ping me.
Many thanks !
Christian

Example fix + tests
Renaming a file in Wine to the same name but in different capitalization
doesn't work. For example, renaming "foobar" to "FooBar" doesn't work and is
basically a no-op. It works under Windows.
This is actually very annoying in practice when using file managers or file
browsers or anything else with Wine and trying to do that, so it's not just an
academic fix, but a practical one.
This should be special cased because now it finds that the target filename
already exists in the original case (which is good for other cases but not this
one) and thus uses that, effectively being a no-op.
Example patch + tests attached to fix this issue. It will probably need some
refinement, but it shouldn't break any current behavior except for fixing this
issue.

The "Loading" screen takes so long (in SW Battlefront II) that I can't connect
to network games because when it finally finishes loading the level, I get a
message that says "lost connection to host" (presumably because it timed out).
I haven't timed it, but it seems to be about 2 minutes, whereas running it on
windows takes roughly 5-10 seconds.
WINEDEBUG=+relay did show that PeekMessageA was being called about 2700 times a
second (probably not a big deal) but then GetForgroundWindows was being called
right after that (a wineserver call). I suspected that as a possible culprit,
but haven't dug in too deeply yet.
I'll do some profiling on this later and try to get some better info. Maybe I
can find a hack-around to positively isolate the cause.

Game recognizes joystick correctly, buttons work as expected, however game sees
analog stick as if it's stuck in some corner, making character run in circles.
Jiggling the joystick makes it slightly change direction, but game is still
unplayable this way. Joystick appears to be working correctly - it works fine
in Linux games, and joystick control panel also shows correct positions. I
tried two joysticks:
Logitech F710 (XInput mode)
Steam Controller (sc-controller x360 joystick emulation)
both yield same result.
dumbxinputemu makes game see two controllers, one real and one emulated by
dumbxinputemu, and seems this time around emulated one works normally, but the
real one keeps overriding it, so character just changes directions frequently
and in with drastic direction changes.
Also, Logitech F710 has DirectInput mode, which has working sticks, however it
has weird bindings and i am unable to rebind it in-game.

It always just starts up to a black screen. I have to kill the process to close
it. This did not happen prior to the most recent game update.
I also tried adding a launch argument to disable the intro video in case
playing it was the issue. It still did not work.

Bug ID: 45311
Summary: Skyrim Special Edition: ambient sounds do not
attenuate with distance
Product: Wine
Version: 3.9
Hardware: x86-64
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: xaudio2
Assignee: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
Reporter: forestcode(a)ixio.org
Distribution: ---
In Skyrim SE, ambient sounds are supposed to attenuate based on the camera's
distance from the source, so that distant sounds will be barely perceptible,
nearby sounds will be loud and clear, and moving closer or farther from the
source will gradually change the sound's volume accordingly.
When running on wine with builtin xaudio, distance attenuation does not work;
any time the camera enters a certain (fairly distant) radius from a sound
source, that sound will suddenly start playing at full volume, as if the source
was in the player's ear. This results in disturbing situations like startlingly
loud footsteps and voices produced by distant NPCs, or a sudden roar of water
rushing the moment the player crosses an invisible threshold in the vicinity of
a river.
When running with Microsoft's native 64-bit xaudio libs, distance attenuation
works properly.
Note: While winetricks xact is probably the easiest way to install the native
xaudio libs for testing purposes, recent versions of winetricks do not install
the 64-bit versions. (See wine bug 41618#c5.) Reverting this commit is
therefore necessary in order to get the libs needed for Skyrim SE's 64-bit
executable:
https://github.com/Winetricks/winetricks/commit/f2b3d268d941120d13b4c3c3960…
I have identified a few locations in the early part of game where this bug is
prominent:
1. A point on the road from Helgen to Riverwood where the rumbling of a nearby
river cuts in suddenly as the player approaches it.
2. A point on the same road, closer to the river, where the whooshing of
rushing water cuts in suddenly as the player approaches.
3. A point in Riverwood where the creaking of the wooden water wheel cuts in at
full volume as the player approaches.
When standing at any of these points, one can hear the ambient sounds cut in
and out either by walking closer/farther from the sound source, or by zooming
out to third-person view and rotating the camera around the player, such that
the camera enters/exits the sound's radius.
I will attach screen shots showing these locations.

Pictures to explain better
Greetings
I have a very good experience with games in wine, but there is a bug with my
joystick, which disturbs some games.
I have a PS2 joystick style (DragonRise Inc. Generic USB Joystick) very popular
here in where I live, work and usually no problem with native linux games.
In wine, almost everything works normally, it recognizes, and works in all
games. But there is a problem with the axes of the analog.
In Games, I set up the axes of analog, such as "Pro Evolution Soccer 5"
everything is right.
But some games you can not configure the axes - Example "GTA San Andreas."
The problem is with the analog number 2 in the GTA is the camera, only works up
and down, left and right does not work, the function of the left and right
analog camera is in paragraph 1, which is normal, but beyond move to "CJ" also
moves the camera to the left and right.
"San Andreas" is just one example, this same problem hap wine in all games that
use analog 2.
To explain the problem better, I am attaching a zip file with two photos
The first is a photo of the joystick, and a second drawing I made to explain
the problem better.

It would be very useful to run some tests on real hardware.
* This is the case for all the 3D graphics tests. For these we would even want
to run them on both AMD and NVidia graphics cards(*). Currently they are
essentially ignored by WineTestBot because the virtual graphic cards don't
provide meaningful 3D support.
* It could somewhat be useful for sound tests too, mostly to avoid timing
issues, but also to ensure the results we get are not tainted by bugs in the
emulated sound card. Also emulated sound cards typically don't support MIDI
emulation.
The problem is that it's very important to limit the test duration and to
restore the test environment to a clean state after each test, no matter what
happens, for two reasons:
* Because it's not uncommon for tests to have side effects and for them to
leave the test environment in an unusable state. Granted it happens much more
often with older Windows releases as they are more prone to crashes. However
graphics drivers also tend to be buggy and we would not want the tests to be
tainted by a previous run (though a reboot should take care of most issues).
* But also the Wine TestBot runs anything that gets posted by anonymous users
on wine-patches. That's ok as long as such code is properly confined and not
allowed to run for too long. That supposes thoroughly cleaning up the
environment after a test has run, including anything that could happen at boot
time.
Virtual machines provide a simple solution to both of these issues which is why
the TestBot relies on them heavily.
With QEmu it's possible to let the guest OS access some peripherals directly
via the 'passthrough' mode. This is normally done for network cards. If it
worked for graphics cards that would be a great solution but it's not clear
that it's feasible.
Another option would be to play tricks with Grub scripts: have it boot from a
clean Linux partition (or from the network?), restore the Windows partition
from a clean disk image, reboot into that partition, and back on the clean
partition with the next reboot. That still leaves the issue of forcing a reboot
in case of a freeze or malware taking control of Windows (use a remote
controlled power switch like in data centers?).
(*) We currently have two such machines ready for this:

Some 32-bit games like Dragon Age: Origins start without sound in recent Wine
versions (see for example bug 43685), due to running out of 2 GB memory
limitations. One workaround is to use a patcher on the binary to enable large
address aware bit.
Such as: https://github.com/randomstuff/pe-set-laa
This is cumbersome however.
Please enable some explicit workaround (like some Wine environment variable for
example), to avoid using patching on the binaries.

Summary: ntQueryDirectoryFileEx needed
Product: Wine
Version: 4.2
Hardware: x86-64
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: ntdll
Assignee: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
Reporter: springrat(a)protonmail.com
Distribution: ---
Mod Organizer 2 fails to load the userspace virtual file system (USVFS) .dll
due to a lack of the function, "ntQueryDirectoryFileEx" in ntdll.dll. As a
result, the program itself cannot be used for its intended purposes of
organizing and loading mods directly, and some critical features such as using
tools within the virtual environment break.
