Summary: Broken native support for comctl32.dll.
Product: Wine
Version: 2.14
Hardware: x86
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: comctl32
Assignee: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
Reporter: s3141p(a)gmail.com
Distribution: ---
# Summary
Broken native support for comctl32.dll.
This results in a number of popular Windows applications partially, or sometime
totally, not working anymore, such as IrfanView, Faststone Image Viewer, and
XPDF-Xchange viewer.
I confirmed that both wine 2.10 2.13, and 2.14 exhibit the same problem. I
hypothesize that this issue was introduced in wine 2.8 following the changes
for fake dll generation that were announced in
https://www.wine-staging.com/news/2017-05-16-release-2.8.html.
# Reproducing this issue
1. Install 32-bit wine 2.14.
2. Install 32-bit IrfanView 4.44 - latest version as of this writing.
3. Install `winetricks comctl32` - Microsoft COM control DLL 5.8 for Windows
XP, year 2001.
Note: #2 and #3 have worked together for me for all wine versions up to 2.6 (I
skipped 2.8-9, and 2.11-12).
4. Run IrfanView, select menu entry File > Open; IrfanView crashes. Terminal
output shows this message:
```
err:wineboot:ProcessRunKeys Error running cmd
L"C:\\windows\\system32\\winemenubuilder.exe -a -r" (2)
err:module:DelayLoadFailureHook failed to delay load
comctl32.dll.HIMAGELIST_QueryInterface
wine: Call from 0x7b4367c6 to unimplemented function
comctl32.dll.HIMAGELIST_QueryInterface, aborting
wine: Unimplemented function comctl32.dll.HIMAGELIST_QueryInterface called at
fixme:service:QueryServiceConfig2W Level 6 not implemented
fixme:service:QueryServiceConfig2W Level 6 not implemented
fixme:ntdll:EtwEventUnregister (deadbeef) stub.
```
Of course, the Microsoft Windows XP comctl32.dll doesn't implement
HIMAGELIST_QueryInterface, which, according to
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb761510(v=vs.85).…
requires at least Windows Vista. The corresponding wine API is documented in
https://source.winehq.org/WineAPI/HIMAGELIST_QueryInterface.html.
Other examples of Windows applications that fail with the same message include:
* PDF-Xchange Viewer version 2.5 - it doesn't start at all.
* FastStone Image Viewer 6.2 - it hangs with an hourglass mouse pointer.
The obvious work-around is not to load the native comctl32.dll and rely
entirely on the built-in dll. While this works, as it has always worked in the
past, the native implementation lacks enough functionality that at least
IrfanView and Faststone image capture do not work well. That is why several
forum threads recommend using Microsoft's comctr32.dll for such applications.
For IrfanView, the impairment is mainly cosmetic, so it can be tolerated.
Faststone Image Capture, however, can't display thumbnails past the first
screenful (about 20-30 pictures) if the native comctl32 DLL isn't loaded.
# Conclusion
IrfanView and other important Windows applications fail to work partially or
entirely when the native comctl32.dll is loaded. Before version wine 2.10
(possibly 2.8) they all worked without a glitch. The native comctl32.dll is
still needed for full application compatibility because the built-in
replacement DLL lacks some functionality (tested with wine 2.14).

Under Wine Staging 2.21, SlingPlayer 2.0 crashes in a way that it does not
under vanilla Wine 3.0-rc2.
I tried patching latest git with the dxva2 patches, as that seems to be the
last thing mentioned in the log before the crash but when I did that it doesn't
seem to be used:
0009:trace:loaddll:load_builtin_dll Loaded L"C:\\windows\\system32\\dxva2.dll"
at 0x7c020000: builtin
0009:trace:loaddll:free_modref Unloaded module
L"C:\\windows\\system32\\dxva2.dll" : builtin
I guess something needs setting in the registry or the likes.
To get this far, the following overrides are needed:
WINEARCH=win32 - Bug 35268 / Bug 35276
quartz - Bug 18556
wmp9 - Bug 28669
mf - Bug 44201
The application crashes on load so you do not need a Slingbox to test.

Hello,
I have noticed a problem with toolbars in Metatrader 4. When I change toolbars
with separators between icons from horizontal to vertical position, toolbars
aren't displayed properly - heights of toolbars are too small and separators
don't extend the entire width of the toolbar.
When I remove separators from each toolbar everything works fine.

I'm using Metatrader 4 with Wine 1.6.2 on Xubuntu 14.04 LTS (32-bit).

"mql4buy://1870.PZ%20Goldfinch%20Scalper%20EA/free".
On Windows, this starts an instance of Metatrader terminal.exe with the
remainder of the URL passed as a parameter e.g.
terminal.exe "//1870.PZ Goldfinch Scalper EA/free"
This either starts Metatrader, or if it is already running, installs the EA and
exits.
The first part of the bug is that mql4buy URLs are not handled correctly by
Wine Explorer i.e. they are not passed to terminal.exe as they are on a real
Windows installation. The second issue is that even if the URL is fed to
terminal.exe manually, it does nothing. The EA is not installed.
The same problem exists using MT5, 64 bit.
I am using Kubuntu 14.04 and MT4 is installed in its own WINEPREFIX, 32bit
arch.

When the window managed by Wine (not by X window manager) is moving with the
mouse and the mouse pointer goes to another screen (for example, at the right
side), the window starts to move down the screen and then dissapears.
It seems it's related to the MotionNotify event handler in
dlls/winex11.drv/mouse.c.
Xlib programming manual describes XMotionEvent as follows:
The same_screen member is set to indicate whether the event window is on the
same screen as the root window and can be either True or False . If True , the
event and root windows are on the same screen. If False , the event and root
windows are not on the same screen.
…
If the event window is on the same screen as the root window, the x and y
members are set to the coordinates relative to the event window's origin.
Otherwise, these members are set to zero.
But the MotionNotify event doesn't check the same_screen member and passes null
coordinates to the update_mouse_state function and it causes wrong window
positioning.

However, the application reappears before truly "hiding" into the systray and
has to be "closed" (to systray) a second time. I am assuming the two are
related rather than separate bugs, but it is a pretty big assumption.
“winetricks dotnet45” needed to get this far (Bug 37883).

Second run has a different log. Both attached (again, assuming to be the same

Minimized (110 lines) testcase; includes source and 32bit binary
Steps to reproduce:
1. Open the attached testcase, or anything else with a toolbar (I did nothing
weird with the testcase).
2. Click and hold the mouse on any non-disabled toolbar button
3. Move the mouse to any other toolbar button, disabled or not; release the
mouse
Expected result: The button is not activated, since the mouse was depressed
while hovering over another button. This is also the result on Windows 7 64bit.
Actual result: The button is activated. This can even be done if the button is
disabled, which can give all kinds of strange results in apps that assume
disabled buttons are not triggerable.
To guarantee there is no weird config nearby, I have tested it with a live CD
in a virtual machine. Linux Mint 15 MATE, 64bit; wine1.6-0ubuntu1. I'd use 1.7
if it was in the PPA, but I don't think I have enough RAM to compile Wine on
that VM.

application. This is same with at least intel and radeon cards and different

Installed Office 2010 (English/Arabic version) successfully. Then run
MS Word with no problem except. It doesn't type Arabic in the right manner.
Arabic is not connected, typed from left to right and some times it places the
last letter of a word in between and connects the letter with broken connection
or skipped ones. Also words order is left to right.
I attached one pic showing:
MS Word (wrong Arabic representation) and bellow it
LibreOffice (correct Arabic representation)

Gaiden have a huge sound delay of nearly a second when using either the alsa

dsound and directmusic are installed as components in order to ensure that
every single sound from the game actually plays.
The bug does not appear to affect an rpgmaker game called Space Funeral,
however the above titles have it very noticeably.

I should be able to switch to another desktop and get a debug trace when the

I'm using 375.26 of NVidia's drivers. While I started having WINE issues

This issue happens on certain maps in Halo Online depending on what your
current Z position is. Not all maps suffer from it, only certain ones do. If
you're above the Z position that it begins happening at, everything below
renders normally, but once you go below it, a portion of the frame becomes
black. It seems to be in a pattern. Not all objects are blacked out, either. So
there must be some sort of "priority".

Behavior of SHFileOperation differs from windows.
Here is some trivial code that copies a directory:
const wchar_t *const sourceDir = L"C:\\TestDir\0\0";
const wchar_t *const destDir = L"C:\\TestDir2\0\0";
SHFILEOPSTRUCTW do_copy = { 0 };
do_copy.wFunc = FO_COPY;
do_copy.fFlags = FOF_NOCONFIRMMKDIR | FOF_NOCONFIRMATION | FOF_NO_UI;
do_copy.pFrom = sourceDir;
do_copy.pTo = destDir;
SHFileOperationW(&do_copy);
If you add trailing backslash to destDir:
const wchar_t *const destDir = L"C:\\TestDir2\\\0\0";
On Windows result would be the same. However, on WINE+linux result would be
different:
no backslashes:
$ls TestDir
file.txt Subdir1 Subdir2
$ls TestDir2
file.txt Subdir1 Subdir2
with trailing backslash:
$ls TestDir
file.txt Subdir1 Subdir2
$ls TestDir2
TestDir
This causes issues with programs that rely on Windows behavior.

over the entry "Check for Steam Client Updates..." and then stopping the mouse
results that the mouse cursor is showing the I symbol (the cursor symbol that
for example also appears if moving the mouse cursor over a text area). Moving
the mouse shows the normal mouse cursor again but stopping the mouse on the
entry again shows the I symbol again. A workaround seems to be to close the

In some programs, attempting to open certain dialogs causes the program to
freeze without responding. This behavior can be observed in the most recent
version of 0CC-Famitracker, found here: http://hertzdevil.info/programs/
Attempting to open the configuration dialog (marked by a hammer in the top bar)
will cause the program to hang. The program will also hang when attempting to
modify any new instrument.
Is there some bug with Wine dispatching Windows dialogs? This program is
developed in Visual Studio 2015.

This screenshot depicts the button which will cause the hang. The program will
continue to produce sound and the oscilloscope will continue to move as well,
but the rest of the program will freeze.

0CC-FamiTracker 0.3.14.5 (http://hertzdevil.info/programs/0CCft_v0314r5.7z )
and my j0CC fork
(https://github.com/jimbo1qaz/j0CC-FamiTracker/releases/download/j0.6.0a/j0C…
) crash after saving.
Confirmed on multiple machines including Ubuntu with 3.14 and 3.15, and a
Debian x64 VM with a .wine created under Debian version, and upgraded to 3.0.2.
Instructions:
- Open 0CC (and optionally open an existing file.
- Press Space (to enable editing) and mash the keyboard a bit to enter notes.
- Press Ctrl+S and specify a filename.
- Mash a few keys and press Ctrl+S a few times.
At this point 0CC will usually crash with an assertion error in CString, often
with a backtrace consisting of a single entry of 0x0. One time I got a
backtrace pointing to MFC UI code.
------------
I think this is a memory corruption issue arising from calling
`AfxFormatString1(text, IDS_FILE_SAVED, text);` with the same input and output
=
https://github.com/HertzDevil/0CC-FamiTracker/blob/v0.3.14.5/Source/FamiTra…
But it doesn't crash on Windows. Is that a program bug or Wine bug?
- I think MFC is statically linked.
I thought it was a regression from some unknown earlier revision, but I
installed a Debian Stretch 64 VM, `apt-get install wine wine32`
(https://packages.debian.org/stretch/wine = 1.8.7-2), and `wine
0CC-FamiTracker.exe` experiences the same issue. Maybe the crash doesn't
manifest on Wine 32? IDK.
-----------
The code in question has been removed from 0CC, and I will be including a
workaround (don't call AfxFormatString1(out=in)) into j0CC soon.

This seems similar to bug 21665, but is not the same bug (as it has been fixed
long ago)
When using "open from" to load a file in Heavy Metal, the program will page
fault as soon as the "open" button is pressed. Similarily, it will page fault
when using "save to" most of the time. That makes it impossible to use these
functions.
It doesn't appear to be a regression (I have witnessed this on all versions
from 1.3.7 to 1.7.9).
Using native comctl32.dll solves the crashing. The native DLL used in my
testing has the MD5 2f0680d0ac7b37cd5f3b118024ad0f0d.

how it looks in wine
In a modal window, buttons at the bottom can't be pressed with mouse
(presumably due to tabbed control are reaching too far down). But if focused
with tab, pressing with enter or space works fine.
This is a recurrence of https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8522. I'm not
sure if it's ever been fixed.

While experimenting with a CodeSonar plugin we develop, we noticed a
potential bug in file "wine/dlls/comctl32/comboex.c" line 1033 function
COMBOEX_Create
SetWindowSubclass(infoPtr->hwndEdit, COMBOEX_EditWndProc, EDIT_SUBCLASSID,
(DWORD_PTR)hwnd);
infoPtr->font = (HFONT)SendMessageW(infoPtr->hwndCombo /*HERE*/, WM_GETFONT, 0,
0);
Shouldn't you access infoPtr->hwndEdit (instead of infoPtr->hwndCombo) at the
mentioned position in the second line?
Thanks,

version as well).

To see the bug, open regedit drag the bar that separates registry tree from
values so that it partly covers registry branches names. If you use native
comctl32.dll or in windows you'll see tooltips over these partly covered items,
displaying full item name. Wine won't show anything.
This is true with listview also.
In some applications that have big listview tables with long values this bug
becomes pretty annoying (when you constantly have to change comlumn widths etc
in order to see complete values).
Maybe this bug was reported earlier, but I have not found it.

Bug #: 30486
Summary: Tanner L-Edit shows blank hotkey field
Product: Wine
Version: 1.4
Platform: x86
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: comctl32
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: dank(a)kegel.com
Classification: Unclassified
Tanner's L-Edit uses the msctls_hotkey32 control from comctl32
in its Setup / Application / Keyboard dialog, but under Wine,
the control is always blank. It should say 'None' (or the local equivalent)
initially. (The caret is positioned properly, though.)
'winetricks comctl32' works around the problem.
Wine's control works fine in a standalone demo.
The problem exists in many versions of the app, including the 7.12
Student Version downloadable from various sites as ledit.zip,
2972402 bytes, sha1sum f1a5825e63cee03f2cfb912cfa8d47c5a22aa684
That version requires 'winetricks mfc42' to start, and warns
about wanting 256 color mode. Using Xephyr to get 256 color mode
doesn't seem to help.
