Please check that you have this registry key:
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\DirectX]
"Version"="4.09.00.0903"
If that won't help, then run it with "WINEDEBUG=warn+file wine..." and check if
it tries to check for some files in system32 directory. If so, just "touch
file.dll".

Both the old and the new test case display the color
picker fine on WinME, but wine only works with the
new test case. So wine needs to be able to handle
a null lpCustColors field, at least from a vb app.
Hrm. I guess the thing to do is somehow spy on
what the native oleaut32 is doing when it gets
that null pointer...

I did a lot of things.
First I found out that my sound (in-kernel ALSA of kernel 2.6.13) was not
working with wine. So I tried different things like OSS, newest ALSA-package,
newer kernel etc.
My sound is still bad, but works (stuttering very bad) and HL2 starts now as
suspected.
So I guess this was just a sound issue. Maybe related to switching from gcc-3.3
to gcc-3.4 which caused a lot of problems on my system.
I don't know how I should mark this bug. Would "INVALID" be okay?

An old 2D strategy game, Warlords III: Darklords Rising, runs extremely slow and
with some graphical corruption. One of the issues is that shadows are solid blue.
This game should only require 75MHz and 16MB RAM, yet the above issues occur on
a Pentium 4 2.8GHz with 1GB RAM. It must be using a special function, as other
DirectDraw games with similar requirements, such as Heroes of Might and Magic I
& II, work fine.

What's still to be resolved is the bug on adding new elements, whatever you want

The best thing to do first is try with 0.9.4 and see if that makes any changes
and then update to the latest CVS. You can run wine from the compile tree
without installation. see http://winehq.org/site/cvs ,
http://wiki.winehq.org/FrontPage and http://winehq.org/site/developer-cheatsheet .
This sounds similar to one thing I have found to be a problem in 16 bit code. If
one program spawns a second and the first exits a dead lock occurs and then 60
seconds later the second program is killed by wine.

Created an attachment (id=1583)
--> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=1583&action=view)
"Working" fonts
By the way, I worked out exactly what garbling is happening - the font symbols
are being rendered backwards (flipped horizontally), and its using the index
one above the one it should (ie, "sqweek" shows up as "trxffl").
The fonts I've attached here are a temp fix. I used fontforge to manually flip
the characters and shift them one index. It messes up the text on the menus but
at least once you get in game the text is readable (it's not pretty, but it's
readable :) ).
I just grabbed the latest cvs code (20051227) and the problem is still present.
However, there is something else at work here - I have a saved wine source tree
which worked great for soldat back in my Debian system. But, that same tree
compiled now under SourceMage has this font issue. Probably some font config
issue is involved... unfortunately I've reinstalled over Debian so can't
investigate it.

Here's how to run the demo:
$ rm -rf ~/.wine
$ wine vbrun60.exe
$ unzip riched.zip
$ cd "RTB test"
$ cp ~/RICHTX32.OCX .
$ regsvr32 RICHTX32.OCX
$ wine RichEdTest.exe
It has a more detailed description of each of the four problems
in a window at the bottom.

Works fine for me here with wine-0.9.4,
but the original problem case,
http://www.jsware.net/jsware/packs/webed5.exe
still doesn't work; it fails with
err:module:import_dll Library MSVBVM60.DLL (which is needed by
L"C:\\windows\\w51sup.exe") not found
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for
L"C:\\windows\\w51sup.exe" failed, status c0000135
So perhaps there's a problem in webed5.exe's installer
that isn't present in the test case?
Joe, did you test your little demo installer on Linux with Wine?
If so, what version?

One more thing: I'm NOT using ANY window manager, just X. Thought this might be relevant.

Summary: deadlock in GlobalUnlock
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.2.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: critical
Priority: P2
Component: wine-kernel
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: arieldembling(a)gmail.com
Hello,
I'm running a program under Wine which opens a modal window, but under certain conditions it freezes after closing that window and returning focus to the previous one. The backtrace indicates this could be a Wine problem (I guess it's a deadlock or starvation of some kind, but my knowledge of Wine isn't deep enough to diagnose this). The fact that this program has been running fine for years under native Windows systems suggests Wine should be the cause too.
The program I'm running is prowin32.exe, which is the Progress client environment, running a Progress application called MFG/pro made by a company called QAD (see www.qad.com). You won't be able to find a demo of this program on the internet, but I'm willing to do any tests that you need.
This MFG/pro application consists of lots of files (modules) which are executed by Progress' prowin32.exe and which call each other as the need arises. At the moment that the problem appears, prowin32.exe has just finished executing one of those modules, and is returning the control to the caller module. Also, it is destroying one window (which was modal, and used for data input) and SHOULD give focus back to another existing window, but this does not happen. Instead, it just hangs there.
This problem is somewhat hard to reproduce, because the test case is not that common. There could be some dependency on the amount of data that's entered on the modal window (or maybe on the data itself), but maybe it's something else. Once a test case is found, it's reproducible almost every time. I say "almost" because at least with an older version of Wine the problem disappeared if the wine-preloader process was being strace'd (I thought it was some race condition), but that doesn't seem to happen anymore with version 0.9.2. So now we do have a 100% reproducible bug (the race condition might still be present, but if so the now it's easily won).
I tested this with several Wine & Linux versions, and it's present in all of them. The latest Wine version I've tested is 0.9.2 (I used the CentOS binaries provided at winehq.com), running under Linux 2.6.14.4, but was present back in Wine 20040813 and with Linux 2.6.3. I didn't test Wine 0.9.3 because the pre-compiled binaries for CentOS still don't exist, but I've seen the changelog and couldn't find anything that seemed to be related to this bug.
This is the backtrace before triggering the problem (with the modal window open and a message box waiting for input):

This bug is critical for me, since the program is useless if it cannot be trusted to save the information that was input through the window that fails to be destroyed
I'm not sure if this bug should be marked for Component wine-kernel, but that's my best guess.
I sorely need your help. Any thoughts/questions/tests/solutions are welcome.
Thanks!!

The problem reported has to do with a bug in our msvcrt missing support for I64,
and that does have its own bug 2075. If 2075 gets fixed, then this is fixed. I
have gotten a patch merged in for it finally, so please test.
If wine is supposed to load dlls provided by the program overriding the built-in
ones, this is another bug. Either way, simcity should work fine now here.

In fact the fix is completely wrong :-)
I need to test how windows searches menus by ID. Simple tests seem to show it
does actually return submenus if searched for by id, but it returns menuitems
in preference. I need to write a testcase to see the exact search algorithum
so we can mimic it.

shouldnt, and holding the bug open because I cant send patch until this is done

This is similar ro bug 4004, and in fact is resolved by the same patch
(currently the cvs worthy version of the patch is under discussion in wine-

Hi, Dan i didn't configure anything. i have some more old versions laying around
here: in wine-20050211 i get the same error you are describing; in wine-20041019
it starts up fine. So i'd say test november and december 2004 snapshots.

Sorry I didn't take the time it really takes to do a serious bug report...
the thing is as follows: If you copy/paste text directly from other windows
application (such as the key generator I used) the installer is immediately
killed, but if you paste this text into a file and then copy the text in the
file to the clipboard and paste it to the installer it works fine.
I considered it to be a blocker for this app since it is really hard to make it
work from a real windows installation so the installer is very important and it
didn't work, thought it was really serious, now I see it is not, should have
moved it to normal

(you either use all native or all builtin ole (ole32,oleaut32,rpcrt4).
Also is there a reason that you using native shlwapi?
Also please try this with latest wine-0.9.4 (but see Bug 4128 for some addional

just check to what, your wine drives are mapped to.

Summary: Regression: Wine Spins When Starting InstallShield
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-ole
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: selover(a)speakeasy.net
Prior to 0.9.4 it was possible to start the installation of the Garmin Trip and
Waypoint Manager. Wine now spins before the installation starts.
I have isolated the cause of the problem. It is due to the change in
dlls/ole32/storage32.c file, specifically the SmallBlockChainStream_ReadAt()
function. The spin occurs in the first do/while loop in the function
SmallBlocksToBigBlocks().
SmallBlockChainStream_ReadAt() function previously checked if the bytes read
equal the requested bytes. The function was modified not to perform this check.
Without the check the do loop in SmallBlocksToBigBlocks() never exits.
I corrected the problem by adding:
if (size == 0)
rc = E_FAIL;
before the ending return in SmallBlockChainStream_ReadAt() function.

I haven't been playing the game in a while, but having tried to get back to it
in recent days, I have likewise encountered this bug again - although it
definitely had stopped appearing for me after the commit of the previously
posted patch. Weirdly, even reverting CVS to immediately after the commit which
fixed it before ('cvs update -dPA -D "2005-05-08 00:00 CDT"') still gives the
failure... I'd be more than willing to track down the exact commit which caused
the problem, if I could manage to get back to a version which didn't *have* the
problem. Even the version I originally reported as "working", last time around,
now fails for me.
I am at present still running XFree86 (4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1), but have upgraded
to X.org (6.8.2.dfsg.1-11) although I haven't restarted X yet. Any information I
can provide which would be helpful in tracking down this problem may be had upon
request - for that matter, any advice as to how best to track the problem down
myself would be welcome.
