I downloaded 245.zip from the link above, and installed it into a (mostly) fresh
.wine (I'd installed other stuff using MSI first, but no dcom95, native msi or
other dlls).

Run the installer using the latest WineHQ GIT tree

~/wine/wine setup.exe
installs and runs fine. I'm going to close this bug. Reopen it if you have
further trouble.

Seems related to this:
trace:menu:RemoveMenu (menu=0x1e8 pos=0000 flags=0400)
warn:menu:MENU_GetMenu invalid menu handle=0x8d0, ptr=0x7fdad420, magic=0
warn:menu:MENU_GetMenu invalid menu handle=0x914, ptr=0x7fdad464, magic=0
The above trace means that RemoveMenu is failing, which is why you're ending up
with many menu items.
Looks like it's crashing at dlls/user/menu.c # 2011 at the line, as submenu is
probably NULL due to the above bug, but it's not checked.
submenu = MENU_GetMenu( hsubmenu );

DAZ|Studio trace
Here's the trace Raphael requested, for DAZ|Studio this time. More recent
releases of DAZ|Studio continue to load after showing the error (but crash
later, due to an OpenGL regression, plus DAZ|Studio is affected by the
WM-rewrite OpenGL regression, anyway).
There are also some drawing errors in the splash-screen that might be related
(wrong colors on some widgets - blue instead of dark gray). Still, the problem
remains, if DAZ|Studio could fail due to an 'insufficient' color depth, I'm
almost certain other applications show this behaviour as well...

I raised this in #winehackers and Vitaliy Margolen said he believes the "ez-cdda sleep"/GetThreadContext bug is already solved. He also noted that 0xffffe410 is just a return address from a syscall, so it might not be relevant.
I'll do a trace with an unstripped binary and then update this bug report.

AFAIR nothing, I was back at the prompt. For quite some time now I couldn't
spend time on the topic of this bug and therefore didn't have the software
installed for testing ... with wine 0.9.4 even the installer doesn't work
anymore, so at least from now on I will treat this bug in my "personal
bugzilla" definitely as closed as it is here. :)
But despite of this really many thanks for your efforts and interest.

I keep telling you about the _window manager problem_.
Even if Wine does the right thing the Window manager will mess it up, so please
check your window manager's autoplace configuration, or try use a different
window manger (eg. twm). You can even try it in a Xnest session or Xvnc so you
don't have to change your configuration. Try it like this:
Xnest :1
DISPLAY=:1 xterm &
DISPLAY=:1 twm &
DISPLAY=:1 wine blah.exe
Or even without starting twm or an xterm:
Xnest :1
DISPLAY=:1 wine blah.exe
If that still puts your dialog in the wrong place, let me know.

WINEDEBUG=+winsock output
I known that unix has telnet and ssh client. SecureCRT integrate ssh1, ssh2,
telnet, rlogin and serial connection all in one. And each session runs "tabbed"
like firefox. Many users in the VanDyke's forum ask for a port for unix. And
personally I need this application before switch from Windows to Linux.
Attached there is the output of WINEDEBUG=+socket with native ws2* dlls.
I'm compiling the current CVS (downloaded now) so tomorrow I have the results.

Oops, right, I forgot I set WINEPREFIX in the startup scripts to system wide
locations ages ago to allow other users to use applications another user
installed even if they depend on stuff their installer wrote to the registry.
The feature request should be the opposite then - fall back to a global
registry and global dosdevices akin to the one I've set up w/ a global
WINEPREFIX while still allowing overrides to individual settings (e.g. global
registry in /etc/wine, global drive mappings in /etc/wine/dosdevices,
additional per-user mappings (e.g. to the home directory) in ~/.wine or the
likes.

I don't see a relation with the problem you mentioned with 16 bits, since I only have 1 process here. But take a look at the thread called "ez-cdda sleep" here:
http://www.winehq.com/hypermail/wine-devel/2004/10/0024.html
I think it's the same issue, and the same address (0xffffe410) is involved. In that thread Mike Hearn mentions that he implemented a solution, but the discussion seems to end there (see http://www.winehq.com/hypermail/wine-devel/2004/10/0372.html ).
I wonder if his patch ever made it to the main Wine tree...

I find one solution to the bad looking fonts is to specify a font path (now in
registry) containing the font it is looking for.
In HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Fonts
create a string called "Path" and set it to for example "/home/jesse/.fonts".
I haven't figured out why Battlefield 1942 won't load it's font right though.

Hm, really looks like the DS_CENTER routine in user/dialog.c @ line 537 is not
really doing something useful (or I misunderstood it :-) I think Wine should
at least TRY to center it. If some windows managing moves it, ok, but if not,
Wine is doing the right thing here. Do you think, adding DS_CENTER to the
MessageBox dialog would be the right thing, or would you have another idea?

The format is a text file containing something like:

Not too complicated. The extension is .url, and it is associated to

Looks like CLSID_InternetShortcut is totally unimplemented :/
The Windows 2000 registry shows that it's implemented shdocvw.dll.
It implement it would involve reverse engineering the format of the shortcuts,
then implementing the ole object based on dlls/shell32/shelllink.c

Unfortunately, Wine isn't so simple, for anybody :/
I'm not sure whether DS_CENTER works right in Wine (I suspect so), but in my
experience even if you get that right, half your users will still see the wrong
thing because of the window manager autoplace issue. At least it should work on
some window managers though...

:-)
Seeing that something seems to go wrong and knowing what to do are different
things... I spent some time trying to find a solution for this, but without
some deeper knowledge about the internal Wine structures it's not as easy as
it might look for a codeweavers developer... my first idea about setting a
WS_CENTER flag for the dialogs .rc file isn't really good, and trying to find
exactly why the MessageBox function goes into this and not into that branch is
even more complex if you come from Windows, where debuggers looks a bit
different to winedbg :-)
So I decided to report this issue at least... leave it unconfirmed or whatever
you like. When I find time, I can do a second try to find and probably fix it.
But maybe meanwhile someone walks over it and see something immediately...

ABBYY 7.0 won't start up.
bash-3.00$ wine FineReader.exe
Unknown COM Error. Error code: 0x80004005
Solved by:
mkdir ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/mike/Local\ Settings/Application\ Data
Still crashes, with what looks like ole/msvcrt exception problems.
However, the original (msi) problem should be solved, so I'll close this when
the patch is committed to WineHQ. Somebody can open a new bug for the new problems.

I am not sure of the severity of this bug (it's definitely blocking me from
running my program), how fixable it is, or really anything about it other than
that the IRC members told me that it was a bug with Wine and not my program or
computer. While attempting to run an .exe file, I got this error:
ari@Ari:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Gravity/RO$ wine qro.exe

The screen flashes, and a new prompt appears. I tried running 0.9.4 but I
didn't even get this far, I ran into a lot more errors.
I could not find this bug on the bug list, and no one on the IRC channel could
tell me its status. If someone could send me an email to update me at
aberkowi(a)student.umass.edu (not my login name) then that would be really
helpful. I'm willing to lend a hand to anyone else who wants to fix this.
Otherwise....good luck!

Unfortunately, I don't have an SMP machine to test on. The problem could be in
MSI as except for the records, the database, view, package and other handles are
not thread safe.
I guess you either have to install it on a uni-processor machine, have a go at
debugging it yourself, or send me an SMP machine in the mail ;)

Bernd,
Thanks for the feedback. I'm aware the radio buttons should grey out when
disabled, the richedit text selects itself for some reason and that MsiGetMode
is not implemented.
To get the right behaviour with the richedit control I tried using the
WM_MOUSEMOVE to trigger the DoAction event, but that meant that the mouse must
enter the richedit control itself (not just its scrollbar), then settled for
WM_VSCROLL, because it's closer to what I want, despite the selection problem.
Anyway, could you please open seperate bugs for each issue you find, and then
assign them to me, otherwise this bug will end up as a mixup of many different
issues, and I won't know when to close it.
thanks

VistaTask is an inexpensive scripting program
(with a free trial) which might be useful for
writing regression tests for windows applications.
It works under Wine better than any similar package
I've tested to date, but it failed to invoke the "Import From"
item in the File menu of an app I'm testing.
To repeat:
Install an app that has a two-word menu item in e.g. the File menu.
Run VistaTask, create a new script that starts
that app and invokes that menu item.
Run that script.
The app will run, and the File menu will come up,
but the two-word menu item won't activate.
The same script on a WinME system does properly
invoke the two-word menu item.

How would I go about getting wine to tell me what resolution it failed to change
to, in complement to the error message which is in parentheses in the title of
this bug? I am utterly unfamiliar with Wine debug practices, including even
basic invocation, but I suspect that there is a better way than editing the

No this is the dup of Bug 633. If you look at the comments for
StorageImpl_Commit you will see that it has nothing to do with your problem.
(dlls/ole32/storage23.c:1600)
Wine does not have "internal" clipboard and using X's clipboard instead. And
your problem is related to Wine's inability to copy anything but the raw plain
text into the X's clipboard.

This is likely due to your window manager. Wine sets the position hints, but
many windows managers decide that it's better for them to "autoplace" the
windows. Try looking through the configuration options for your Window manager
and see if you can turn off the autoplacing.
In sawfish, I don Configure->Placement, then set "Method of placing windows" and
"Method of placing dialog windows" both to "None".
I have argued unsuccessfully on wm-spec-list(a)gnome.org that there should be an
_NET_AUTOPLACE hint to allow the window manager to know that it really shouldn't
autoplace, but they said that this feature is present already, but most window
managers ignore it, so adding another hint will be of no use.
If your window manager provides no way to configure this, try a different window
manager.

Hi,
Windows will center ::MessageBox() dialogs on the desktop, when hwnd==DESKTOP,
which is not happening under Wine. They will open somewhere in the upper left
corner. This is also true when using a virtual desktop.
MessageBox(HWND_DESKTOP, text, "I should be centered",
MB_ICONINFORMATION | MB_OK);
Does anyone have an idea why?
Thanks and regards
Markus

Saulius, my english is no way better than Yours. So, let's not worry too much.
In communication, it's always just matter of time, when the one being stops
understanding the another being :o) It is completely normal, and if the WILL to
communicate persists and there is enough time, then everything still can be
considered as success. People are created as social, communicative beings by
their nature.
The important thing is, that we still communicate and thus we still can find a
solution. I'm going to try the overrides the way You suggested.
Pleasure to cooperate with You :o)

Thanks, Peto
| First, I don't clearly understand what You have written.
I admit my experience with english language isn't nice, but..
actually I just have asked wheather you can:
1, install DCOM95 (or DCOM98);
2, go one step forward from the second patch which brokes things and compile Wine;
3, run one command line (WINEDLLOVERRIDES='oleaut32=n' wine ...).
This command line does on-the-fly dll-override, and it isn't recorded anywhere
in the registry, so it seems to be usefull for debugging only. If you find this
override (oleaut32 [native only]) makes your app working, you can transfer it
into the registry (via winecfg).
Plus in that case we will know there is something wrong in Wine oleaut32.dll
code. That should be debugged later, using latest wine-cvs version.
| but there is a notion, that winecfg is just too new and it dosen't change
| things so far, only allows to view. I have tried to change some DLL overrides,
| and seemed that settings are remembered, however I'm not sure if they are
| actually working either.
Ok, this happens because of too old wine version. Just use overrides from the
command line for a testing time. When the cvs-version of Wine is compiled, you
can use winecfg to set overrides in a permanent way.
| I will do anything to help fix this bug, but for now things becomes unclear
| for me.
I am quite new at supporting bugfixing, so I am sorry about making the situation
go into this state. :-/
