Summary: Regression testing howto incomplete and unfriendly
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.2.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-documentation
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: tuharsky(a)misbb.sk
Hi,
I'm involved in resolving several bugs and since they almost all fall into
regression, I have been adviced to find out the patch that has broken things.
For doing that, I use howto at
http://www.winehq.org/site/docs/winedev-guide/x1344
The howto is of little help for me however. It seems too focused to some
concrete archive and situation from 2 years ago. Some things have changed since,
and the howto dosen't reflect the variability.
The howto should be more detailed and should explain each step, not just spit
out some command shell lines.
Please, improve the howto in these ways:
1, comment the sense of EACH COMMAND, so that user could change parameters, if
needed, to reflect actual situation
2, take care to ensure, that howto is useful even for users that never met CVS
before (like me)

Hallo,
I have chosen the full CVS download because on-line CVS takes too much effort to
enable and is dependent on too many things (firewall settings etc.) And I have
downloaded the full cvs archive yet so not very useful to get it all once over
again thru CVS.
I'm trying hard but the howto is unfriendly and unclear. I'm posting new issue,
'cause I have will to do the testing but the documentation dosen't help me much.

It will create a file called "FILE:" in the current directory.

Vitaliy Margolen, thanks for the quick response. Sorry for the cedega
reference. The problem is this:
Loading diablo is fine as usual
It goes through the little intro videos/logos.
It gets to the main menu type thing...where you choose if you want single
player or get on battle.net
Single player works, however.. If you click on 'Battle.net' to get on a realm,
it crashes.
So yeah, you can play single player but not multiplayer (battle.net). This
has something to do with the new 1.11b patch.
Hopefully this can be fixed.

"Unfortunately, Bug# 3270 still exists. I thought it was fixed in 0.9.1 but
after further testing I was able to still reproduce the bug with Xfce 4.2.2/KDE
3.4.2. Clicking on the main lobby taskbar icon after bringing up a regular table

taskbar icon will work correctly. "

This was a known problem for transgaming (cedega), yet they created a working
'hotfix' for it very fastly. Here's a thread to that:
http://transgaming.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4032
I would just use that...however,
My diablo II loader (I have to use this..broken CD ROM)... doesn't work with
their software right now. It won't load. It works with wine, though...yet
has the problem I portrayed above. Please implement this 'hotfix' like
cedega, so that we can play Diablo II LOD multiplayer using wine.
Thank you.

I will repeat Tony Lambregts: if you can take care and make somewhat long
testing process done, please test the regession and find an offending patch:
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3963#c3
This requires to "cvs checkout" Wine tree to disk and compile it by itself, but
that would help us. If you will make a regression test for bug #3963 too, it
will be very easy to know if this is the same issue. (i.e. caused by the same patch)

It seems that all GDI function have this form:
X11DRV_LockDIBSection/X11DRV_CoerceDIBSection -> X11DRV_DIB_Coerce
Modify DIB or X Server
X11DRV_UnlockDIBSection + sync between DIB and X Server
So, i think the best way to implement the change is to add 4 more implicit
paramenters to X11DRV_LockDIBSection, X11DRV_CoerceDIBSection,
X11DRV_DIB_Coerce, and have the GDI functions eventually pass the rectangle to
X11DRV_DIB_Coerce which will set them into the X_PHYSBITMAP structure.
Something like this:
static INT X11DRV_DIB_Coerce(X_PHYSBITMAP *physBitmap, INT req, BOOL lossy, INT
x=0, INT y=0, INT width=0, INT height=0);
or maybe
static INT X11DRV_DIB_Coerce(X_PHYSBITMAP *physBitmap, INT req, BOOL lossy,
XRectangle *mod_rect=NULL);
The second way would also require for the GDI functions to dinamically allocate
a XRectangle before passing it to X11DRV_LockDIBSection or
X11DRV_CoerceDIBSection so will require a bit more coding. Still not sure which
one is best ...
Anyway, enough talking .. i will try to do the change tonight if i won't be to
tired, and a patch will follow ...

Please, note that:
1, Until now, there isn't native odbc backend in wine, although requested more
than 3 years ago.
2, There is a way to enable it, using native ODBC dll's (from myODBC 2.5
installation), that even WORKED WELL until 200505 version of Wine (see 3966).
3, This is the only way to run free Oracle client with apps under wine, because
Oracle dosen't support ODBC driver for Linux.
4, Wine indeed IS about making native DLL's work too, especially if they aren't
implemented by wine. If it wasn't, hardly could any slightly more complex app
work. Nice example: it is even adviced to use common controls native DLLs
sometimes. And they are even implemented! So much more should Wine care about
handling those DLL's that aren't implemented either. Especially those that are
essential to run apps.
"Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API". Logically, if the
API is implemented correctly, the DLL's should work too, don't they?
5, Since yesterday, under my closer inspections, this bug seems to be not about
odbcad32.exe itself, but rather about the very ODBC libraries under wine.
Even if it was just about odbcad32.exe, what's wrong about it if it was
necessarry to run app under wine? The DB sources must be defined somehow, and
odbcad32.exe is good way to do it.
Eventually, it is stil all about compatibility with Window$...
If You be so kind and wish to help us with problem 3966 that puts our Linux
installations under danger, then odbcad32.exe is good way to test the native
ODBC libraries behaviour. If they worked well with odbcad32.exe, then they will
surely work with our very essential app.
If my expectations are right, than this issue could be marked as duplicate of
3966. What do You suggest?

Had to change assert.h and stdlib.h from "" to <> to make Dan's patch compile on
Mandriva 2006.0, but it does build against their 0.9.2 source RPM.
I too had to lie to the installer about having MSIE before it would run (thanks
for this, Dan!):
cat >> $HOME/.wine/system.reg <<"_EOF_"
[Software\\Microsoft\\Internet Explorer]
"Version"="6.0.2900.2180"
_EOF_
--- CAUTION: DIGRESSION ---
Dan, your initvbapp.sh seems to have a microbug: you fetch and unpack unshield,
then (re)assign $CABEXTRACT to it, then later use unshield instead of what I
think you wanted to do, which was use $UNSHIELD which in turn I think you wanted
to assign from `pwd`/src/unshield.
Also, Mandriva includes cabextract and unshield in their packaging system; you
can test for the existence of it there by checking the status of "urpmq
packagename", and install it (as root) with "urpmi packagename". It might be
generally handy to have a utility script available on every new system, one that
you pass a wanted package name to, which finds out where it is running (Debian,
SuSE, Mandriva, Slack, whatever) and installs the packages if they're available
through the package system or returns false if it can't. I dub it mayihave, so
you'd invoke "mayihave cabextract" and revert to download/unpack/configure/make
only if that fails.

Sorry, but Wine is not about making native dlls (or other parts of OS) work. So
in other words I don't see anything here that doesn't duplicate bug 986 (that
pretty much means Wine does not have anything implemented in this area).
dbcad32.exe is part of windows and not your application.

Any messages in the console? What do you mean "does not work"? Does it open the
window? Does it tries to save? Does it give you any errors? What should happen?
Also could you test this with latest wine version (0.9.2)?

This looks like a reasonable optimization to me. Enlarging the rectangle is a
cheap operation, so it shouldn't slow things down. I'd start by doing it only
in the BitBlt.
Note that *all* image modifying GDI operations need to either invalidate
LastModRect or update it (union with current operation's rect), there's no
middle ground. Since invalidation is a matter of setting one coordinate of the
rectangle to some magic value, it's cheap too.
Then DoUpdateDIBSection looks whether the rectangle is valid, and if so only
copies the indicated part of the DIB around. Otherwise it reverts to current
behaviour. After it finishes, the rectangle needs to be set to a zero-sized
rectangle.

There are two bricascad version:
1) Windows version
2) Linux version
I use the second.
Bricscad for Linux is not a native linux applications, it is required wine.
The Linux version, is a windows version with some modifications from
software house for running under Linux (with wine).
for install i proceded:
1) I downloaded .tgz file,
2) Uncompress it
3) Copy folder "bricacad" in /opt
4) $/opt/bricscad/./icad (to run)
Thank you very much for your support

I came to the conclusion that the slowness in "Heroes IV" it has to do with
sync'ing lage bitmaps between application DIBs and X Server(see the above log).
This happens when a GDI call tries to get a DIB from 'DIB_Status_AppMod' stat
into 'DIB_Status_GdiMod' stat. Eventually X11DRV_DIB_DoUpdateDIBSection() will
be called, which will try to sync the entire bitmap, even though maybe only a
small part of the bitmap has been modified by the program:
static void X11DRV_DIB_DoUpdateDIBSection(X_PHYSBITMAP *physBitmap, BOOL toDIB)
{
BITMAP bitmap;
GetObjectW( physBitmap->hbitmap, sizeof(bitmap), &bitmap );
X11DRV_DIB_DoCopyDIBSection(physBitmap, toDIB,
physBitmap->colorMap, physBitmap->nColorMap,
physBitmap->pixmap, 0, 0, 0, 0,
bitmap.bmWidth, bitmap.bmHeight);
}
I think this can be improved in the following way:
1. Add a new member to X_PHYSBITMAP structure (RECT LastModRect) which will
memorise the acctual rectangle that needs to be sync'ed by
X11DRV_DIB_DoCopyDIBSection() function.
2. Modify all or a number or GDI function to set physBitmap->LastModRect
accordingly, before calling X11DRV_DIB_Coerce(physBitmap, DIB_Status_GdiMod,
FALSE).
3. Modify X11DRV_DIB_DoUpdateDIBSection() to take in consideration LastModRect
and if its valid, try sync only that part of the bitmap and afterwords
invalidate LastModRect. If LastModRect doesn't contain valid values,
X11DRV_DIB_DoUpdateDIBSection() will try to sync the entire bitmap as it did
untill now, this way, if a GDI function doesn't set LastModRect accordingly,
everything will still work.
If anybody else has any other ideea how to improve performance, please share
it :)

If it really crashes because of incorrect handling of Window$ native ODBC
drivers, then this issue is tightly connected to 3966.
It's interesting, that it stops working on exactly the same version of Wine
(200506) as ISS app with ODBC backend..
Please check, if Your version works under 200504 release.

Well, new information.
It is probably matter of native Window4 ODBC under Wine.
I have tested several releases of Wine and it looks like this"
200504 -works well
200505 -application starts, but has michmatch in Data source. It's clear that
some data has leaked where they shouldn't, because data sources are displayed as
some pseudo-random strings
since 200506 -application crashes exactly as in 0.9.2
So this is regression -ISS with ODBC worked well under 200504 and dosen't work
under 200505 and newer.

I am finding that the menus and toolbars in MS Office applications become
inactive after the app has been running for a short while (minutes). I cannot
see any obvious thing that triggers this.
When this happens, the menus and toolbars seem to have gone into the "customize"
mode. When I select a menu, a small box appears, which can be dragged to remove
the item from the menu bar (or toolbar). However, the customize dialogue is not
displayed.
The only action seems to be to close the application and start it again.

I can say, that with wine 200504 it worked well. There is one circumstance
however -under 200504 we have working ODBC.
I run it under 0.9.2 with not working ODBC.
So I can't say if it don't crash because of not working ODBC.
However, program should state some "No ODBC available" instead, not segafult IMO.
