AFAIR, this effect is called a "race conditions" or "racing". When application shows message box about a refresh rate error, you could launch winedbg, select a process (info proc), attach to it (attach 0xB , for example) and to get backtraces of all its threads (bt all). That may bring more information to you. But if your app hangs and debugger isn't able to attach to it (this is the case for me) then the only way to find a cause of this is to get two different logs, '+all' versus '+relay,+all' and to try diffing them (diff -u), I think. It lets you design a "front panels" for prototype appliances etc out of aluminium or plastic, the company will then CNC mill holes, engraved text etcetera on the design and deliver it to your door. Anyway, I have been using it under WINE (and the company, www.schaeffer-ag.de) and it works nicely (apart from the bug below) - the manufacturer website even mentions they dont have a native Linux version but the windows binary "works with Wine". Yay. It has a small glitch on the toolbar though under Wine: it is impossible to switch away from the "drawing tools" button group to the selection tool. With wine they show up when the program is first started, that is the drawing tools and other windows, but as soon as any drawing occurs or the window is updated, they disapear. It's actually possible to drag around the main window quickly, and then see the hidden tool bars behind it, trying to catch up with the main window. Promotion is a 2d drawing program meant for doing animated 8-bit art pixel-by- pixel. Gimp doesn't work well for this. I've been updating from cvs regularly and this issue has been stable last month or so. In cvs version 13-08-2004 the game comes up fine (although there's an annoying window on top but that's another problem) If you have time enuogh you might try a regression test. After that the program comes up (complaining first about it can't access a database) but that's another bug. Don't know if there are any other bugs using it but it defenitely doesn't crash at startup. The thing is that recently i've done an apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade on my debian SID machine and i've noticed that the game sometimes hangs while playing, this blocks ctrl + alt + backspace and completely hangs the system, leaving me no other option then to reboot. This bug is repeatable altough there isn't any specific thing (from what i can tell) that activates it. Just randomly, sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes after an hour it'll completely hang forcing me to reboot my system. I'd like to see this fixed as possible, i'm willing to help, if not possible due to lack of manpower or anything i'll just keep at it (saving like a freak) and keep updating hoping some new version will fix it. First I got some errors about setting sound to "emulation". After I did that I get the splash screen and a weird error dialog (attached). When I click OK the screen goes dark (exe trying to change reso, probably) and after a while I get a second error dialog (also attached) and then it exits. I get the following output, though the part after the line containing "closing while ll-driver open" is not printed every time. So Wine appears to be doing a bad choice of picking the font to use, and USPSBar.ttf is one font that tickles that. But moving that one file away doesn't rescue CW. Moving all of them does. Ocrf.ttf, if left in, will mistakenly be used, but that's at least somewhat legible. Nelspec.ttf, if left in, will mistakenly be used, and that's illegible. And so on. Not sure which of the fonts is picked if they're all there, but whatever, the font matching algorithm is clearly knackered. Or maybe it's ok, but the fact that Wine does't come with the same set of fonts as Windows causes havoc.
