------- Additional Comments From willie(a)froq.net 2005-01-10 17:47 -------
I really have to agree with Phil Stopford. This bug is at least a major one,
if not a blocker, I would even say it's not very wise to release Wine 0.9
without a fix for this issue. It affects many apps, special ones as well as
common stuff - many of which worked to a certain degree in the past:
- Newtek Lightwave
- Luxology Modo
- DAZ|Studio
- Eyeon Digital Fusion
- Autodesk Autocad
- Autodesk 3D Studio
- Curious Labs Poser
And pretty much every single app with embedded 3D viewports (which basically
means pretty much every CAD, compositing and 3D app, as well as most level
editors for games, and several OpenGL accellerated drawing/ imaging apps).
I think this is even more important if you consider that there are no Linux
equivalents for most of the affected apps (contrary to many apps the Wine
project seems to focus on: Office, Photoshop, mostly generic stuff), or they
require to much training to simply switch to a different application with
native Linux support.

Summary: Kid Pix Deluxe 3 installer text clipped

Status: NEW

Run winecfg and tell it to act like win98
(or you won't be able to start the installer).
Run the installer under a fresh copy of Wine.
Note that any installer screen that asks you
to enter data renders poorly, with lots of clipped
and/or missing text. That's the bug; it's bad enough
that it interferes a bit with even the determined user.

Probably a problem with your freetype package. As i've seen noone else reporting
this error , i guess it's a problem on your computer and not a bug in wine. If
you still encounter this problem with the latest wine version, you can reopen

ASIO is a driver interface for pro-audio apps developed by Steinberg. It's
somewhat similar to our beloved Jack sound server, but not as advanced.
Anyway, I added the URL to the Steinberg ASIO SDK (for drivers and client

Try to run the installer under a fresh copy of Wine.
It will refuse to run, saying

An easy workaround is to run winecfg and tell it to
act like win98, but we should not require that workaround.

Uwe,
I'm happy, the issue message authors count is now more rather one :-)
Thank you!
OK, about reproduction. At first, I don't mean any wine penalty in comaprison
with win32 OS. I have single-booot PC (it is almost daily synced Gentoo ~x86).
Wine's versions are all I can compare. The issue doesn't depend on the target
app version.
1. Responsivity.
Open any schematics file with '.tran' analysis taking, say, > 30 CPU sec. Start
simulation and try, for example, to add a voltage probe, resize the schematics
window or resize a plot window. All UI operations lag in their response with
~0.3-1.0 sec delay (nevertheless, it seems like all UI events queued and are not
lost). With "good" 2004101 version all mentioned operations are fulfiled
immediately, without any noticable delay, like all "normal" X app.
I'm not C/C++ developer (java is in use). From this my point of view, it may be
something like simple threads priorities typo.
2. Windowing glitches part. It's more-more annoing :-(
Just open any window (a schematics for example), de-maximize it (if it was
maximized), drag bootom right corner of this (MDI child) window to the bottom
right corner of the parent (main the app) window. After releasing mouse button
you will see both horisontal and vertical scrollbars have appeared, resized
window is partly under these scrollbars now.
This is the problem.
Moreover, mouse cursor is boundered as it would be _without_ these scrollbars. I
have found the way to hide the scrollbars: just close all child windows :-)
A common work with the target app includes using of a hierarchy of schematics,
plot/FFT windows and so on. In one word, it is rather intensive work with
multiple child windows. Try to work with some serious schematics with such UI
glitches - you will forget about the schematics shortly, struggling with child
windows.
Again, probably some little _boundary_ error takes place in a calculating of
windows hierarchy metrics.
I have tried to explain my problems as well as my ugly English permits me.
I'm ready to try patches.
With hope,
Andrew

yes, this is the case. if you are not root, it creates them like this.
In this case I suggest not using wineinstall, but just plain configure,
make, make install and wineprefixcreate.
I would really like to close this, since the number of users that will use
wineinstall like this is very limited.

After starting Steam Wine asks first if I wine should download the mozilla
active X control. If I choose no, Steam continues starting and connecting,
after 5-15 seconds the system becomes unusable, with the amount of free memory
dramatically decreasing before the crash. If I click yes, nothing is
downloaded and wine acts as if I clicked no. This happens for all versions
since 20050830 including CVS. With older versions Steam just refused to start.

Duplicate of bug 3241
AFAIK Frank Richter is still working on the patch that fixes this error to get
it committed into cvs.For now you can run the installer with native comctl32.
There's another bug in the installer which reports an access violation. Maybe
you could file it as a seperate bug. It's probably a bug in riched20. This is
how you can install xforce as a workaround for now:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="comctl32,riched20=n" wine xforce-setup.exe
