The same for version 20050930.
The irony here is: the wine works well with payware client applications. And as
for freeware one (I mean LTspice) - the bug is live during almost a year :-)
The sadness here is: regression of app's behaviour takes place.
What can I do to rise wine developers' interest to eliminate the regression?

The user can always choose to run more than one different wine version, albeit
with a little difficulty in setup, but the Wine project will not support old
versions. Even though we're coming close to a stable release, .9, Wine is
still alpha right now. That means there are going to be lots of bugs. We
planned the WM rewrite knowing that lots of apps would stop working as a
consequence; that's just the result of an evolving code base such as Wine.
Promoting users to use older versions of wine until specific apps start
working again is not a good solution. New features wouldn't be tested, and
regressions wouldn't be caught. The term "the last-known-good version of
Wine" is relative to each user's experience. My last-known-good version of
Wine is today's CVS. Most distribution packagers aren't going to provide old
versions of Wine, and if you happened to have a bug with an old version, the
developers wouldn't be able to help you out (the bug was probably fixed
already). Bottom line is that we don't encourage the use of old Wine
versions, but do highly encourage testing the newest releses.

HAL.DLL & NTOSKRNL.EXE are the two major pieces of the windows NT+ kernel. Even
if you stub HAL.DLL (it's easy all it probably imports are a SpinLock functions)
there are still no way this can work on Wine. Because it's missing completely
kernel level environment.
You best bet is to use no-cd patches for your application.

------- Additional Comments From phil(a)ldex.terica.net 2005-30-09 21:50 -------
The problem is that :
a) The previous version worked for this app and potentially many others before
the change. The current version doesn't and there is no workaround/fix except
downgrading Wine. That kind of breakage would put off a good number of people
from using wine for any kind of development purpose. It would have been better
to retain the choice until bugs in the new code were hammered out (such as this
one). If I were a commercial vendor looking at something like Winelib for
porting an application, I suspect I would be less than encouraged by this
all-or-nothing approach to evolving the system. I don't dispute that many other
apps have seen their behaviour improve with the change - I'm simply suggesting
that having two systems side-by-side would be a better option at the moment.
Once this and other issues have been resolved in the new code, the old code
could be removed.
b) The old working version of Wine is not packaged for current distributions.
The user is left with a choice of attempting to install a package for an older
distribution (potentially also conflicting with any newer version of wine that
they care to install) or with compiling from source. That's not particularly
friendly and those users coming from Windows who are determined enough to go
this far will be few and far between (noting that Windows folks are not
generally disposed to filing bug reports following years of being ignored by
many vendors).
If there is no technical way of having both systems implemented in Wine (with
the old system being chosen by a command line switch or environment variable),
then what about having the last-known-good version of Wine available for current
distributions (and being able to be side-installed with the current version of
Wine)?

When attempting to save a game in Fallout 2 Wine usually dies. It may also die
with a similar error message (see below) during other actions, like loading.
If it doesn't die at the first savegame, it can take several more before it goes
down. Sound pops aggressively before death but sound pops anyway during all
loading/waiting screens.
I tried to search the web and bug database but didn't found much. I guess this
might be related to the differences between linux and fbsd mallocs.
This is what it spits out:

Just to chime back that even with the previous WM code, everything was not
perfect and you needed some serious hacks to get some applications working (case
in point was the NWN toolset).
Moreover, even with the previous WM code I was thinking about going the PBuffer
way as it was the only way to really map to what Windows does (like being able
to change the OpenGL visual 'on the fly').
Finally if the PBuffer implementation is good enough, there should not be that
much of a speed difference between 'normal' windowed OpenGL operations and
'PBuffer' windowed operation (did not do any benchmarks yet though :) ).

Summary: Picasa gets very slow and choppy when resizing
thumbnails
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: PC
URL: http://dl.google.com/picasa/picasa2-current.exe
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: winehq(a)silicore.com
CC: dank(a)kegel.com
Found with Picasa build 27.54
NOTE: make sure to have at least 200 pictures in Picasa.
Steps to reproduce
1) Launch Picasa
2) Click and drag on the bottom right scrubber located next to the export
button. This bar resizes the thumbnails in Library view
Result: As you click and drag the slider, the scubber does not smoothly move.
It jumps to the next position after a few seconds. You will also notice that
after you resize the thumbnails, scrolling through the thumbnails is extremely
choppy. Picasa is busy creating higher quality thumbnails which I believe is
causing the slowness in scrolling.

Component: wine-msi
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: agilmore(a)wirelessbeehive.com
RiverWare is a riverbasin modeling package. It runs fine with wine, but since it
does not install with wine, the install has to be run elsewhere.
The URL above is to a downloadable and installable package, although it will not
run without a license. This is the parent page:
http://cadswes.colorado.edu/riverware/viewer/Download/
Run with 20050930 drop, brand new .wine directory. Also msi and *msiexec set to
builtin, which did not change results.
When the downloaded executable is run, the InstallShield wizard begins, and
eventually fails in "Preparing to Install..." with the following text in an
"Unhandled Exception" message box:
Error Number: 0x80040706
Description: Object reference not set
Setup will now terminate.
After OK is clicked, a second box appears:
Error Number: 0x80040707
Description: DLL function call crashed:

Setup will now terminate.

GraphPap, which produces graph paper of various types fails to run properly. A
free demo can be downloaded from: http://pharm.kuleuven.be/pharbio/gpaper.htm
I'm running Fedora core 3 on an IBM Thinkpad T30. I compiled WINE 20050930 from
sources using the 'tools/wineinstall' method.
wine --version
Wine 20050930
The program starts up, but comes up with "Access violation at address 0046F351
in module 'GraphPap.exe'. Reead of address at 000000A0" in a windows box.
This may be related to trying to draw the graph paper (that box is blank).
Note: An older version of this program fails to install. I can submit that as
a seperate bug report for those working on the installer. The problem seems to
be associated with an "illegal directory name".

If you mean regsvr32.exe - I'm not sure but I think it just tries to overwrite
it. And if it does that, wine can't start it anymore. There are could be some
othere problems that I don't remember what they are. It could be something to do
with RunOnceEx registry entries.

Umm. I do not know.
Better do a full backlup copy of the .wine directory in this case.

I did test Wine 20050930 this morning without running wineprefixcreate and it
still crashed.
If I run wineprefixcreate will I be able to go back to a previous version of
Wine? Because if it does not work, I do not want to have to reinstall my working
system

This line:
err:ole:marshal_object couldn't get IPSFactory buffer for interface
{00000131-0000-0000-c000-000000000046}
is an indicator that you need to run "wineprefixcreate" to update
your registry settings.
Please do so, and report back.

dd if=logfile.txt of=partlog.txt bs=1000000 skip=1100
creates a file called partlog.txt of about 55MByte
Compress with:
bzip2 partlog.txt
(should be 2-3 MByte or so)
attach the resulting partlog.txt.bz2

Hi Oliver,
Thank you for looking into this. Is it an easy effort to fix the bug? If it
would be helpfull, can you tell me with which debug options to launch the games
so that I can submit a more detailed bug report?
Regards,

Does anyone have any idea what does it do with regedit that makes it fail with
the builtin? Some command-line switch? It would be nice to get rid of one of
the dependencies...

Works for me too. Using the latest wine-config-sidenet. However the fonts are
very small. Fixed itself though when I accedentaly ran that winecfg or
whatever old script in /sourcedir/tools.

Hi Joe,
I certainly don't want to alienate people who go to
the trouble of working with us to help track down Wine bugs.
I should have mentioned that the Fedora people might well
be very happy to receive your report; it's not often one
runs across a repeatable way to crash a Linux system
(well, maybe it's not *that* uncommon on a FC system
with a testing kernel, but still).
Which documentation was I not paying attention to? I'm
more than willing to RTFM!
Thanks,
Dan

Hi Klaus,
thanks for the report!
It looks like there's no function names in that stack dump.
I'll contact you offline and see if I can help you
get a more symbolic stack dump.

------- Additional Comments From phil(a)ldex.terica.net 2005-29-09 21:24 -------
Ouch. That's really unfortunate (to put it kindly). I *really* wish that the new
window management system had been implemented alongside the older system,
possibly with a command line switch or environment variable to set the mode to
be used. At least that way those with apps affected by this change wouldn't now
be completely blocked from using newer wine releases.
This genuinely sucks and the wiki 'solutions' don't seem particularly ideal. Is
there no hope of getting the old WM code put back in for legacy support until
the new WM code is working for these affected apps? This impacts CXO/Codeweavers
as well, making everything after their 3.0.1 release unusable for apps affected
by this issue. That's a lot of breakage to be shipping in Wine 1.0 and
commercial products based on Wine (which pay some of the developers to work on
Wine, let's not forget).
If nothing can be done with the current code (or by simply having two wine
versions - one with the new window manager code and the other with the old
implementation), could packagers be encouraged to provide working legacy
packages based on the last-known-good January source (e.g. wine-legacy) for
current distributions? That would allow for easy side-installation of the new
Wine and the old Wine without too much hassle for end-users.
