"FiringSquad: What advantages does a driver-level copy protection utility
offer over other methods of copy protection?
Abbie Sommer: The drivers are what prevents the use of kernel debugger
utilities such as SoftICE, Cool Debugger, Soft Snoop etc. Also the drivers
prevent emulators from spoofing a drive, and thwart burning tools such as
Alcohol 120%. StarForce implementation requires no physical modification of
the disc, or the equipment that molds the discs, so this method is a clear
advantage to publishers because it gives them the flexibility to use just
about any plant they wish. This is a limitation of some of our competitors'
products, which require not only special hardware, but also expensive software
add-ons for test and diagnostic equipment."
http://www.firingsquad.com/features/starforce_interview/page2.asp
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3260
------- Additional Comments From ivanleo(a)gmail.com 2005-27-08 16:35 -------
Chances are the driver is for debugger checks, I find in unlikely the windows
ide driver gets unloaded, in any case the correct way to do this is implement
all the interfaces starforce needs to work, and not replacing it, we can't do
that for each and every copy protection scheme in the world, but implementing
the interfaces it needs is a more realistic target.
Ivan.

Summary: Get Starforce copy protection working perfectly.
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: Other
URL: http://www.star-force.com/
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: oliver_stieber(a)yahoo.co.uk
Starforce is becoming the dominant form of copy protection being used for new
games (and game demos!) but at the moment it doesn't work.
Startforce uses a dll called protect.dll the dll loads and performs some copy
protection tests it then installs a driver that takes over IDE CDRom support
on Windows.
Their are currently only two ways to defeat the copy protection on windows, 1:
modify the executable so that it no longer requires copy protection.
2: disable all cdrom drives and use a mini-iso-image for the game.
It should be possible to implement some of the features in protect.dll in Wine
without breaking the DMCA (e.g. replacing the driver)

It would be nice to see something like this

The problem still occurs in todays CVS - specifically running eg. notepad and

configured with (KDE option) of 'Focus strictly under mouse'. All other focus

Actually part of this bug is also probably dup of 758, whereby if the window

resolves that as well

Clicking on the menu brings down the normal drop down menus, and mouse moves

I posted this bug to the wine-devel list but got no response, so i'll repost
here what i've found thus far (note :to install the program you need now native
comctl32 due to a regression):
I dug a little deeper into this:I had a knoppix live cd lying around
and there bug is not present. A program like Neatimage
(www.neatimage.com) startsup just fine there. I also
did some tracing to see where the difference is. I'm
quite noobish in this so correct me plz if i'm wrong:

Looks to me as if an exception is thrown, now the
program itself tries to handle the exception, and the
program exits with a window abnormal termination.
My question really is why the exception is handled in
two different ways, what could be the cause of this?
If this helps: one guy on the buglist got this error
after upgrading from Fedora Core 1 with vanilla kernel
2.6.10 (which worked
fine) to Fedora Core 3 with kernel 2.6.10-1.766_FC3

Thanks for this comment, but as far as I understand this patch is younger than
my wine version.
I'll build the CVS tree and tell you more about this.

if so, the patch that caused the regression is already pinpointed by me, which

In versions of wine older than CVS 8-23-05, there is a heap corruption bug in
wininet. Heap corruption is particularly bad because it causes the app to crash
at random points in the code (it seems to occurr when allocated memory is
freed). It should work if you update to CVS.

No one has commented on this since 2003, and ati drivers have moved on a lot
since then. Additionally lots of work has gone into the gl and d3d interfaces
(which drive gl) and no one has commented on this for as long as I can
remember. I also ran ATI demos at wineconf with no problems of both opengl and
d3d games so I strongly suspect this is resolved in more recent drivers.
Because of all this, I'm resolving this as abandonded and it can be reopened
if the problem persists and can be actively persued

Not that this shouldn't be fixed, but under Unix one can simply use
RDesktop (http://www.rdesktop.org/), maybe with
GRDesktop (http://www.nongnu.org/grdesktop/; GNOME frontend)
to connect to a Win2003 terminal server - even sound, local printer and local
directory access work.

WOOHOO! This fixes "half" the problem with Bug3148.
Once I applied the patch, I no longer had the problem
with the effect of the mouse button being continously
pressed once I clicked on something.
However, one problem still remains. If I select 3
items (shift + click from start item to finish item),
and I click with the left-mouse, my selection is lost
as now only 1 item is selected (the one I clicked on).
However, if I right-click, my selection isn't lost.
It seems what *should* happen is the following:
1. you make your selection in a listview (2+ items) by
using the shiftkey + left-mouse button
2. let go of shiftkey and items are still selected
3. click on one of the highlighted items
4. selection remains intact
5. drag-drop as you wish
However, things seem to go amiss at step 3. I can
somewhat retain the selection if I keep the shift-key
pressed throughout the process -- which is not the
norm as I should let go at step 2..
So, can someone listen (pay attention) to Vitaly and
apply the patch so at least this bug can get half-way
fixed???
Thanks!
Hiji

I think we need to create multiple metabugs for different copy protection
programs. They are way too differnt to track as a whole "Copy Protection

This regression also seems to affect the Neverwinter Nights Aurora Toolset
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?versionId=3186 . There are some screenshots
there that show what the problem is. I've also tested it with Wine from 20050131
10:34:00 CST and it appears the same as in 20050111. I'll test it in 10:35:00
CST if asked.
Please not that the Toolset does not work properly in the Jan Wines, but it is
certainly better than later releases.

Half life 2 works nicely now, except for rather trippy graphics. But that doesnt
concern me. Mouse input in half life 2 seems to be broken ingame, on the menus
it is fine. Game only seems to get input once every second or so. Running
fullscreen, allowing app to grab cursor, changing windows version do nothing to
help it.

20050524 - works
20050725 - brakes
between these two versions, quite a lot happend. Can you try to find out when
exactly it brakes? I mean: Test first 20050628 and then you need to compile Wine
from CVS for the days inbetween, to find out on which day which patch causes the
regression. This makes fixing much easier and tenfolds the change that some
spends some time fixing it.

Summary: Regression in database program that used to work with
20050524
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: wine-x11driver
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: simon(a)arara.de
A (quite old) database program (cobra adress plus 8) that's unfortunately still
used in this office used to work with 20050524, when i try to open a datafile in
20050725 though i get these errors:
err:x11drv:X11DRV_CreateWindow invalid window height -25
err:x11drv:X11DRV_CreateWindow invalid window width -6
err:x11drv:X11DRV_CreateWindow invalid window height -25
err:x11drv:X11DRV_CreateWindow invalid window width -6
It successfully opens the file but doesn't display the content of the file.
This is probably rather a bug in the program than a bug in wine but it would be
nice if it'd work again anyway, vmware just eats too much performance.

Summary: Space Empires IV minimize and alt-tab make game
unplayable
Product: Wine
Version: 20050725
Platform: PC
URL: http://www.malfador.com
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: minor
Priority: P2
Component: wine-gui
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: ekolis(a)cinci.rr.com
If I am playing Space Empires IV in Wine using Managed window mode, and I click
the game's minimize button or use Alt-Tab to leave the game temporarily, when I
restore the game the window does not come up full-size and it cannot be resized,
making the game unplayable. (Of course, this can be worked around by not *using*
the minimize and alt-tab, or using Windowed window mode, but it's still an
annoyance if I forget.)
