Bug #: 32142
Summary: Ability to run Nuance Dragon Naturally Speaking 11.5
broke with wine 1.5.13
Product: Wine
Version: 1.5.13
Platform: x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: hsivonen(a)hsivonen.fi
Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 42413
--> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=42413
Wine 1.5.16 output when launching Dragon (until ctrl-C after 10 minutes or so
of CPU at 600%)
Steps to reproduce:
1) Install 32-bit Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11.5 onto Wine on 32-bit Ubuntu
11.10.
2) Move the WINEPREFIX directory to 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04.
3) Install wine1.5 1.5.12-ubuntu0 from the
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine/+archive/ppa PPA (on Ubuntu 12.04).
4) Launch Dragon with WINEARCH=win32.
5) Use it.
6) Update wine1.5 to 1.5.13-ubuntu0 from the PPA.
7) Launch Dragon with WINEARCH=win32.
8) Downgrade to wine1.5 1.5.12-ubuntu0.
9) Launch Dragon with WINEARCH=win32.
10) Update wine1.5 to 1.5.16-ubuntu0 from the PPA.
11) Launch Dragon with WINEARCH=win32.
12) Downgrade to wine1.5 1.5.12-ubuntu0.
13) Launch Dragon with WINEARCH=win32.
Actual results:
Dragon works on wine1.5 1.5.12-ubuntu0. On wine1.5 1.5.12-ubuntu0 Dragon fails.
It starts running and terminates during launch. On wine1.5 1.5.16-ubuntu0,
Dragon shows its taskbar icon with the tooltip "initializing…" and goes to a
seemingly infinite loop on six of the eight CPU hardware threads. Launching
Dragon again on wine1.5 1.5.16-ubuntu0 and then right clicking the taskbar icon
caused Dragon to crash with glibc complaining about a double free. Downgrading
to wine1.5 1.5.12-ubuntu0 makes Dragon work again.
Expected results:
Expected Dragon to continue to work on versions of Wine newer than wine1.5
1.5.12-ubuntu0.
Additional info:
The weird steps 1 and 2 were there, because the Dragon installation wouldn’t
succeed on Ubuntu 12.04 initially due to
https://www.codeweavers.com/support/wiki/linux/faq/ubuntu1204 . Also, I
couldn’t figure out how to satisfy the .Net dependencies in the case of 64-bit
Dragon.
In case filing bugs seen with distro binaries are frowned upon, I already filed
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wine/+bug/1075475 and was told by the
maintainer to refile here.

I ran the debugger in POL and this is what comes out in the log file
After installing My Invoices and Estimates Deluxe 10, using Play on Linux and
Wine 1.7.30. I pointed the link to Meid.exe and it loads up to the account
selection page but won't do anything else. I need this program for Estimating.
I have an extencive database in the Windows Vista drive that is no longer
bootable and would like to be able to continue using this program under Ubuntu
14.04.
I am quite new to this OS. So a lot of the acronyms people use are foreign to
me. But I have some programming background and can useually work through things
with guidance.
Any help would be appritiated.

I thought it was a regression, since it doesn't occur in my 1.4.1 build, but
when bisecting it, I ended up with a d3d10 commit, and reverting it doesn't
help. Trying it a second time gave strange results, so it may be a race
condition or some other weirdness. One of the installer screens asks to install
'Tuneup Utilities'. This screen, however, is often garbled. I'll attach a
screenshot.

Screenshot of 'interrupted' panel.
This is a new, downloadable application, for which I don't believe an AppDB
page exists. (I'd like to create an AppDB page for it and be its
maintainer--once I get a result that would be useful.)
The installer downloads about 140MB of application payload (can be reduced to
about half that in an early dialog) and then proceeds to attempt installation.
After the payload has downloaded, the installer goes through a bunch of
'wizard' panels. Finally, the installer says it was interrupted. The observed
symptoms are essentially the same between WINE 1.3.24 and 1.3.25.
I plan to attach a screenshot of the panel that says the installation was
interrupted, a plain log file, and a log file with a 'msi' debug trace. I
tried tracing relay, seh, tid, and msi, but that trace file was over 700MB
while downloading was in its early stages.

I have Xubuntu 15.10, up to date.
I am able to open TrackMania United Forever 2.11.25 (full version through
steam, the one with all 7 environments).
Interface is fine, sound is fine, can enter a race, can go online, can use the
track editor. However as soon as I press any key (e.g. to try to race) the
application exits. I have an *cough*unofficial*cough* older version 2.0.8 of
the same software that runs fine and lets me race however of course this
"other" version does not go online or let me connect to my online profile.
I am running Wine 1.6.2 installed in the meta-package in the Ubuntu Software
Center.
Sorry I'm unsure what other info I can provide but happy to follow any
instructions necessary to add more logs, upgrade to a newer WINE or whatever.
Thanks in advance for any response!

This bug may be related to Bug #36692, but this one does not involve any calls
to WaitForSingleObject( ), so I am reporting it as a new bug.
A Windows 32-bit bench test, built with VC++ 2010 in Windows 7, designed to
measure the machine cycles of a wide range of low-level CPU and system
operations, reliably demonstrates that the sequence { SetEvent(h);
ResetEvent(h); } costs a minimum of about 36000 machine cycles, when run on
Wine 1.7.50 over 64-bit Linux Mint 17.2. This is an isolated single-threaded
test, without other threads involved and no contention or waiting for the event
object. It operates on a previously created Windows Event object, from an
earlier h = CreateEvent(0,1,0,0) call. The CPUs running this test include both
i7 930 and i7 980. All systems are running normally and without any observed
problems. All the other bench tests show Wine behavior to be similar and on
par with normal Windows 7 results.
The bench test operates by calling the above sequence in multiple passes of
thousands of repetitions per pass, and selects the minimum time for its
reported result. On Wine, the result for a single repetition is about 36000
machine cycles, but the exact same 32-bit binary run on 64-bit Windows 7 shows
about 1350 machine cycles for the same test. This result is highly
reproducible with very little variance in both 32-bit and 64-bit builds.
I control 100% of the C++ code running this test (one .EXE and one .DLL), but
the above result should be easy to reproduce solely from the details I have
provided here. I can provide the binary upon request. If this bug is related
to Bug #36692, the absence of any WaitForSingleObject( ) calls should make this
Bug easier to independently test and demonstrate than the #36692 prescription.
This bug fulfills the definition of a "major bug", because it most likely
adversely affects response latency in a large majority of asynchronous
event-driven processes developed for Windows (e.g. like frame-rates), and there
are no practical alternatives for avoiding this problem.

This problem still exists in Wine 1.7.42.
In Wine 1.7.33 and earlier, sound worked correctly.

Install mono210 with winetricks. Installs fine. Optionally workaround bug 27170
by making a small exe that returns a single word for the hostname (otherwise,
when registering the device, the name will be blank and you can fill it in
manually). Make a new account/sign in with existing, then click submit. The
program will hang:

fixme:advapi:SetNamedSecurityInfoW L"C:\\Prey\\config" 1 4 (nil) (nil) 0x161268
(nil)
it's doing something dotnety, here, because if I don't have mono installed,
that's when I get prompted for it. As a second guess, I installed dotnet20
instead, which works, so looks like a mono bug.
Be careful, once three activations are made on an account, it will refuse to
add more. It seems under mono the devices are added but the local device never
receives confirmation back, unless the number of devices is hit, in which case
you get an error. Logging in with a webbrowser and removing the devices lets
you test more.
So, to summarize:
With dotnet, installing and running prey works. I can add new devices, and
receive confirmation of success or failure.
With mono210 (2.10.2) / wine-1.3.20: installing and running prey works. I can
add new devices, and only receive confirmation of failure, not success.

But followed hlsl fragment can be translated correctly:

The point is the diffrence between names: c783 c0. If hlsl fragment define
variables names like c783 c771 c831 etc, then tanslate must be wrong.
I think 'def c783' is just a variables name, Right? If so it should be
translate to 'const vec4 ps_lc783 = vec4...' although i don't know what's that
really means.

--- Comment #132 from swswine(a)gmail.com ---
(In reply to Jason Mills from comment #130, Luke Horwell from comment #131)
I do not see my patch as the fix, even as a workaround fix actually. It just
effectively makes possible to see in the log what features are missing. To fix
the problem, the features must be implemented (ProcessVertices in shader mode
at the first place, maybe something else). Once again, what's happening:
1. In the original wine state (even after workarounding crash on start), no
shaders for the object can be used because none of shaders pass validation. In
this state, the game fallbacks to the default "error" shader which draws red
models. My patch fixes this. After that the things may really get worse in
terms of gameplay (e. g. models not rendering at all), because the use of real
shaders trigger some features unsupported in wine. But the log now should be
full of indication what goes wrong and it is relatively easy to see which
features are missing).
2. In my version of Sims2 limiting shader version to 2 made things better and
models began to render OK. It does not mean it will help on any Sims2
installation and any hardware. Sims2 has the shaders code in the objects
definition in the game's resources, so games of different versions or just
using different mods may behave differently. Some of those resources also have
different shaders version for different capabilities (e. g, some may support
vs_3_0 and vs_2_0, and some just vs_3_0). Besides, the game has a complicated
features setup based on graphic card and it's capabilities detection (this can
be altered manually in game's text files).
So I think the feasible way to go is to fix ProcessVertices first (it seems
that even when I limit vertex shader version to 2.0 and get models rendered OK
initially it is still used within the game effects for which I also have
glitches). After that (along with some fix or workaround for max shader
constants and for shader validator interface which are currently in my patch)
the game will either work or can be further troubleshooted for remaining
missing features in wine.

I was playing around with this patch yesterday on my system, and observed the
following with the base game (wine-1.8-rc2):
- A strange "rendering" pattern across the screen, depending on the angle of
the camera. Can't really describe it.
- If the camera is 'static', the rendering appears "frozen" (this occurred
even without this patch)
- Sims and animated objects are not visible, instead of flashing red.
After installing EP6 (updates base game to 2007), it got worst:
- The application silently crashes or sometimes displays "The application has
crashed and will now terminate" when trying to load a household, or the
tutorial household. On the upside, the objects can be seen textured
(previously, they were all white).
Results may vary depending on graphics card / drivers - Mine's a GTX 960 with
the latest NVIDIA driver from the Ubuntu repos. By the way, thanks swswine for
the discovery! I'd be happy to test this game further.

So, the workaround you attached; Does it basically fix the red flashing Sims,
and the fact they won't animate? If so, I could quickly try it out and make a
video "showcasing" this workaround in action. And you mentioned other issues
pop up when you interact with a house. What issues? Are they visual? or, do
they make the game crash?

64bit build log
As i recently switch to Debian Jessie AMD64 i noticed now, that 64bit build
produces extra warning compared to 32bit-only build:
* warning: cast to pointer from integer of different size
* warning: unused variable ‘xasm’
* warning: unused variable ‘xasm’
Is this a real bug or something wrong in my setup? (My carefulness comes from
fact, that i don't want to work on bugzilla with wrongly builded wine and
produce a noise.)
I separeted another three logs, if this is a real bug i could then fill bugs
for the following:
* setupapi
* winedbg
* winmm

Right now, the current implementation of GVFS mounts samba folders in paths
like:
/run/user/<UID>/smb-share:server=hostname,share=sharename/
Some Windows apps don't work fine with those characters in the path.
For example, if I want to install something I have in that share and I run the
`setup.exe` file from `wine explorer`, it works; but if I run it from `wine
uninstaller`, it fails saying that characters "/:<>|" are forbidden in paths.
Also, if I installed MS Excel and try to open a .xslx file from a samba share
in Nautilus (right button > open with > MS Excel), it fails saying that it
cannot find the file.
This makes the UX very uncomfortable, because the user needs to copy the file
to a local drive, edit it, and then copy it back to the network share.
Independently if Bug 34748 gets fixed or not, IMHO wine itself should do
something with Linux paths containing those characters, the same way it does
when transforming "/" to "\" or when dealing with uppercase/lowercase files.

Firefox does not show words correctly
Hi there,
We can not write any Arabic or Persian characters in Wine programs.
I have installed Firefox Windows in Wine, then see that I can not write any
word in arabic or persian language.
Firefox in Wine do not display Arabic or Persian words correctly. The alphabets
are seperate while they should be together.
- I have tested it on Opera Windows in wine and the same problem occurs.
- I have tested it on Opera Linux and Firefox Linux and everything was good.
- I have installed the necessary fonts into /~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts/
folder.
- I have installed the necessary fonts in KDE desktop.
I think there is a problem that Wine can not view UTF-8 Languages such as
Persian, Arabic.
Best Regards

Log (+ntoskrnl)
Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas 1.5 cannot start in Wine64 (WoW64 mode) in Linux
Mint 17.1.
Wine stops logging with error "wine client error:37: partial write 57344".
I already debugged this issue.
MTA: SA is multiplayer mod for GTA: San Andreas.
MTA contains kernel mode driver named FairplayKD.sys. MTA installs it at
startup and then sends IOCTL to it from modded gta_sa.exe process. When driver
tries to process IOCTL it fails and sets ipr->IoStatus.Status to
STATUS_NOT_IMPLEMENTED. But when Wine interprets IRP structure in ntoskrnl it
reads the status as number of bytes (which is normally passed in
IoStatus.Information field). Then Wine tries to transfer 0xC0000002
(STATUS_NOT_IMPLEMENTED) bytes to gta_sa.exe process (process which sent
IOCTL). This obliviously fails and causes "wine client error:37".
Problem is caused by invalid definition of IRP structure in wdk.h header. Its
improperly marked as packed. It does nothing in 32-bit because structure
doesn't need any padding in such architecture. In 64-bit it causes displacement
of Status field by 4 bytes.
I already created patch for this issue and going to send it. Patched Wine
1.7.53 allows me to start MTA and play normally. Newer Wine has regression in
DirectX which makes MTA unplayable.

How to reproduce:
1. Launch "wineconsole cmd"
2. Try entering "PATH=%PATH%", but make a mistake writing %PATU% instead.
3. Now try to delete two chars
4. As many people might be doing, I hold <shift> all this time because %PATH%
is wholly entered with <shift>. Now I still hold it, and try pressing BS. So,
result is entering ^H instead, which you try to delete and enter another one :)
5. Now notice that shift is being held, release it and delete all that junk
using single BS key 3 times.
6. Compare behavior with windows cmd — Shift+BS is treated similarly to BS
there, as it is in bash and sh.

terminal output
Avseq is an indie puzzle game using the Unity game engine. The reported problem
is fully reproducible on my system, but it happens only under certain
circumstances.
It is probably not a Nvidia bug because the crash occurs with the open source
Nouveau driver as well. It happens in Wine's full screen and virtual desktop
mode as well.
The game starts fine to the main menu and a new game can be started. A crash
occurs however, when I click on the <How to Play> menu option. Here an
animation should be played, showing how the game works, but the game freezes
instead. A bit later the game shows an error message and saves a crash.dmp file
(no Wine crash dialog or backtrace is shown).
The crash occurs only when
- the game is started in full screen mode
- the selected screen resolution matches the desktop resolution (that's
1440x900 in my case)
- high or highest detail levels are selected
Disabling multisampling in Wine registry works around the crash.

wined3d: Enable multisampling by default.
Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. create a new wineprefix and install the game
2. launch the game with Avseq.exe. In the launcher:
- make sure windowed option is unchecked
- select the same screen resolution as your desktop
- choose either Beautiful or Fantastic detail level and start the game
3. when the menu appears click on <How to Play>...the game crashes
Let me know if you need other logs or tests in case you can't reproduce the
problem.

Installation of Half-Life Opposing Force fails when trying to act on file
"ereg.dll". Because the installation does not finish, the game is unplayable.
The file "ereg.dll" does copy to disk though, so the installation can be
completed by manually changing the file permissions on "ereg.dll" to read/write
instead of read-only, then running the installation again.

Git bisect log
When starting the game, the screen is black, only the cursor is visible. Moving
the cursor to the lower left corner (to the now invisible exit button) and
left-clicking exits the game, so it appears that buttons work. (Sometimes the
demo version froze on bad wine versions.) Sound works.
Wine version 1.4.1 works fine. Using git bisect between wine-1.4.1 and
wine-1.7.22 indicates commit 4c4552c (4c4552c5a1910a9d5adf8eccff0ac62d89ffe376)
as first bad commit. Bug not solved in the most recent commit cf50d5f
(cf50d5f70054c9759f4da89343c0ced62e76643f). Last good commit is b8569d2
(b8569d2f3006bbb14b973eca15a608f9575a0ebd).
Compilation was done with
# ./configure && make && make install
Using CC="gcc -m32" (as suggested by http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting)
does not change the result. (I ran make distclean before changing to m32.)
I deleted the .wine directory for each version tested. I also ran winecfg
before installing the game, but didn't change any settings.
I ran the game from the command line, from the directory it was installed in.
Not changing to that directory prevented the game from starting (with error
message).
A demo version produced the same results (on last good commit, first bad commit
and most recent commit).

When in-game anti-aliasing is enabled, the game starts and loads to the main

I can't test it with the binary driver, it seems the X Server shipped with

Can be reproduced with the non-Steam demo (make sure corefonts is installed

Wine 1.7.33 / BOINC 7 console output
There are a number of ways to start BOINC on a system:
1. At system startup (daemon/service).
2. On its own (in a console).
3. By launching boincmgr.exe (BOINC Manager).
As of BOINC 6.x, option 3 can take around 60 seconds to "start".
In reality the BOINC client (boinc.exe) starts immediately, just as quickly as
any other way, but boincmgr.exe struggles repeatedly to connect.
However:
A. If BOINC is already running, boincmgr.exe connects instantly.
B. If a second boincmgr.exe is launched immediately after the first (giving the
few seconds for boinc.exe to start) it can connect immediately.
C. boincmgr.exe can connect to any other client without any issue.
So it's *just* when boincmgr.exe first launches boinc.exe that seems to confuse
things.

In between 1.7.13 and wine-1.7.13-27-ge610713 i noticed performace drop in

In overall score it makes -14%, but as the CPU tests and MTexels/s &

Since 1.7.13 there were not too much 3d changes, but anyway i bisected to:

Summary: some drawing operations in Mixcraft 6 are very slow
with client-side graphics enabled
Product: Wine
Version: 1.7.11
Hardware: x86
URL: http://acoustica.com/mixcraft/download.htm
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: winex11.drv
Assignee: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
Reporter: s_chriscollins(a)hotmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
Regression SHA1: 33ac850c80634c891b0c157bbffa612f70954a40
According to my git bisect, this bug appeared after the following commit:
--------
winex11: Use window surfaces for rendering top-level windows.
It can be disabled by setting "ClientSideGraphics"="n".
commit: 33ac850c80634c891b0c157bbffa612f70954a40
--------
After the above commit, the following operations in Mixcraft 6 are very
slow/laggy:
1) Scrolling vertically in the track view when there are lots of tracks present
2) Scrolling horizontally in piano roll view.
3) Resizing the workspace between the top and bottom view.
4) Adjusting the knobs and sliders of certain FX plugins.
Steps to Reproduce:
1) Download and setup the Mixcraft trial
(http://acoustica.com/mixcraft/download.htm).
2) If you are opening Mixcraft for the first time, it will auto-load and play a
demo project. After this happens, click the "Open Project" icon (looks like a
folder), and open "Callisteia.mx6". If it isn't showing in the file picker by
default, you can find it in: "C:\Program Files\Acoustica Mixcraft 6\Example
Projects". Go to step 4.
3) If you are opening Mixcraft after having already opened it before, it will
start instead with a "New Project" dialog. Simply click the "Browse..." button
here to find and open the file mentioned in step 2.
4) With "Callisteia.mx6" now opened, use the scrollbar to the right to scroll
up and down through all the tracks in the project.
5) Double-click on the instrument clip for track #8 (Sweet Flute). This will
bring up the clip in notation view at the bottom half of the screen. Near the
bottom-left, change Editor Type from "Notation" to "Piano Roll". Use the
scrollbar to scroll right and left in the piano roll view.
6) Position your cursor just below the playback controls near the middle of the
screen; it should turn into a resize handle. Hold down the mouse button and
move the mouse up and down to resize the split between the top and bottom
screen areas.
Result: The tests done in steps 4-6 are responsive and reasonably smooth in
Wine versions prior to the aforementioned commit. In versions after the commit,
these tests give very choppy and laggy results.
I had mentioned that some FX plugins were also choppy/laggy, but this only
affects some of the plugins that are bundled with Mixcraft Pro Studio 6, which
is not available as a free trial download. Just in case anybody wants to know,
the plugins are: FAT+, Ferox Tape Emulator, all "Mid-Side" plugins, TB Gate,
and TimeMachine. If you want to test a free plugin that exhibits the slowness,
and you know how to bring up a VST's GUI within Mixcraft, you can download
L3V3LL3R: http://www.platinumears.com/l3v3ll3r.html. Be sure to copy the .dll
file to "C:\Program Files\VST".

In Wine, if you move a MDI child window outside the borders of the main window,
you'll get scrollbars. This does not happen in Windows. This causes problems
with some applications which creates MDI child windows that occupies the entire
main window area. In this case, scroll windows appears, which obscures parts of
the MDI child. Tested with Wine as of 2007-08-23, using

It's possible, but has its own set of issues. E.g. what do you do if the game
calls ProcessVertices two times with two different shaders (shader constants)
and the same output buffer, and then draws the entire buffer with one draw
call? What happens if one of the input buffers goes away or is modified between
ProcessVertices and DrawPrimitive? The shader state, and in particular vertex
shader constants and potential vertex textures, is pretty huge. Managing this
gets complex fast...
It's probably easier to hook into
https://www.opengl.org/wiki/Transform_Feedback instead.

At the first place ProcessVertecies does not understand VertexDeclaration
output buffer specification, while sims2 wants to use them and output buffer
has zero FVF code.
I know it may sound very weird, but can't shader support in ProcessVertices be
done in a shorter way by just using application shader function in fixed
function GLSL pipeline in a way similar to how the normal application shaders
(without ProcessVertices) are used? The user shader and input buffer references
to the input buffer could be attached to the output buffer. Then VP shader code
can be used as a function when output buffer is used. Such output buffer would
be a sort of vertex shader closure :)) The Lock on such output buffer won't
work, but Sims2 does not lock these buffers (as I can see from my logs), and
overall it would be strange for the application to process vertices in its code
after requesting shader processing (if mainly for debugging purposes maybe).

Absolutely. It discards all the real shaders without that. The program is
statically linked with a very old d3dx9, maybe newer versions are OK with Null
valudator even if validation is requested. This one returns the error from
d3dx9 shader linking function in this case (E_FAIL 0x80000405)

Google suggests that yes (at least windows 7, not sure about later). There are
some tricks with game configuration files discussed in the forums though. But
it is lkely mainly due to gorgeous configuration files which list all the
graphic cards they know and has plenty specific feature configuration flags.

I noticed d3dx9 trying to create a shader validator interface, but so far it
has always been happy with the NULL return and just skipped validation. Are you
sure it really needs this?

Horray. A game that actually needs ProcessVertices with shader support. This
will be pretty nasty to implement. Our ProcessVertices so far only supports
very basic fixed function operations - just transformation, no lighting
support. For shader support we'll need to be able to interpret the shader on
the CPU, or maybe we can work with one of those OpenGL feedback extensions.
The other stuff is probably RHW vertices + Shader Model 3 shaders. This should
be fixable with the fixed function vertex pipeline GLSL shader. I wonder though
if this stuff works on any modern Windows driver though. We removed the tests
that test the related functionality because we were getting broken behavior on
newer drivers. (There are plenty of differences between those old tests and
Sims 2 though. One being explicit SWVP, the other is that ProcessVertices + RHW
draw is most likely different from just an RHW draw)

Created attachment 52904
--> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=52904
Partial workaround to fix game start, models display and get a sensible trace
I eventually tried to run Sims2 and make it work under Wine. It seems to be an
interesting case of using various d3d9 features which are not implemented in
Wine yet. Shader constants limit is just the first but not the least reason. I
hope it is interesting to share what I found as actually previous discussion
does not reveal what is actually wrong with Sims2 under wine.
While I not yet succeded in making Sims2 fully work I found the major reason
why rendering did not work without any indication what's wrong or not supported
in the trace (after the trick similar to that from Comment #118). I am
attaching the patch which partially fixes rendering for me but more important
reveals actually unsupported features which the game is using. This patch by no
means can be thought as a fix proposal for anything, but lets Sims2 run and
draw models, and makes it usable for further testing and fixing.
As noted in Comment #118 here, the crash on startup can be worked around by
increasing the number of supported shader constants. The patch increases that
constant at the first place and also increases number of constants in wined3d.
Actually this workaround helps to run some other games involving 3d characters,
but not this time. After applying just this the game starts but model is
rendered in T pose and totally red (I am mainly running TS2BodyShop.exe to view
how the model renders). At the same time wine trace does not show up any
relevant problems.
The reason is that Sims2 is using some shader compilaton function from d3dx
library (which has fancy static linkage in sims2 exe files, so no way to use
builtin d3dx.dll). That function requests undocumentated interface from d3d9
through Direct3DShaderValidatorCreate9, and fails if it is not available.
Unlike some redundant constants initialization at startup, this problem does
not show up as crash or something, the game just continues running and falls
back to some most basic shaders which draw red models in T pose, without any
visible errors. My patch adds a very dumb & dirty implementation of the
undocumented validator interface which returns OK for all the requests and does
the trick, the game starts to use real shaders.
After that, if shader model 3.0 is available, the model stops rendering at all
and the trace is full of indications of unsupported features. Not fully
supported ProcessVertices implementation goes first, then a few other things
like tangent, binormal and vertex blend indices vertex attributes, and some
more. These probably should be sorted out one by one.
The last thing that the patch does is hardcoding maximum shaders version to 2
(caps->VertexShaderVersion and caps->PixelShaderVersion in wined3d/directx.c).
After that the model shows OK in model builder (with normal pose and texture).
I also started the main game in tutorial mode (I do not know how to play it),
and the model also showing OK in the beginning, but other glitches show up
quickly when doing some actions in the house (the glitches are now accompanied
by the informative trace output). So probably it is easier to fix the problems
showing up in shader 2.0 model first as it likely has less missing features. It
actually should be possible to limit shader model version within game
configuration files (the google is full of discussions on how people fixing
Sims2 on Windows through these).

Hello,
I am using Wine 1.2 with Ubuntu Maverick 2.6.32-26-generic and MS Office 2007.
When in Word, I try to open a file located on a samba share, so I click the
"Network Places" icon in Word's "Open" dialog. But then, Word freezes. I can't
open a file located on a samba share, and I have to kill Word's process.
Charles.

Screenshot showing the recent documents shortcut sub-icon on Windows
The 'My Recent Documents' section of Office's File -> Open dialog does not show
the recent documents if the filter is not set to '*.*'.
To reproduce this bug:
* Start Word 2003 or 2010.
* Open a document.
* Close Word.
* Start Word again.
* Got to File -> Open -> My Recent Documents.
* BUG: The previously opened document is nowhere to be found.
* Change the 'Files of type' field from the default '*.doc...' to '*.*'
* Now the previous document is visible.
* BUG: Hovering over the document shows a filename that ends in '.LNK' whereas
on Windows it ends in '.doc'...
The fact that the full path shown for the recent files ends in '.LNK' probably
explains why they are not shown when the filter is '*.doc'. Note also that in
Wine the files don't have the shortcut sub-icon so somehow Word does now know
they are shortcuts.

terminal output
The game comes bundled with it's own native msvcp71,msvcr71 libraries, the
crash occurs only when msvcr71=built-in.
The game crashes when I try to load a saved game.
Steps to reproduce the problem with the demo version:
1. install the demo, you can skip the registration steps at the end of
installation.
2. start the demo with ../bin/H5_Game.exe. Intro videos can be skipped by
pressing <Esc>.
3. in the main menu select Single Player > Campaign and start a new game.
Starting a new game shouldn't be a problem with built-in msvcr71.
4. once in the game press <Esc>, choose Save Game and perform a manual save.
5. try to load the previously saved game...a crash occurs here.

Orcs Must Die! 2 will sometimes (probably about 50% of the time) crash when the
last wave of enemies is completed instead of displaying the level completion
screen. Since each level can take 20 minutes or more to complete this is rather
frustrating.
There is no output to the console (without debug options) when the crash
occurs. There is no illegal operation notice, the game just disappears.
This has also been reported in the comments on the game's AppDB entry, back in
August 2012. I played often in October 2012 without encountering the issue,
however.

Tested using 3DMark03_v360_1901.exe
You must set msvcp70 to "native" in winecfg before attempting to start
3DMark03.exe.
./3DMark03.exe -nosysteminfo
doesn't help either.
It's a regression, however I cannot say or identify when it happened.

I’m trying to execute sijpv12.exe (a fiscal program from Argentina), and, when
I try to exit it, the wine crash.
I did try with wine 1.4.1, 1.7.x, and the problem is not repaired.
I did see the problem is here:
static LRESULT call_window_proc( HWND hwnd, UINT msg, WPARAM wp, LPARAM lp,
LRESULT *result, void *arg )
{
WNDPROC proc = arg;
USER_CheckNotLock();
hwnd = WIN_GetFullHandle( hwnd );
if (TRACE_ON(relay))
DPRINTF( "%04x:Call window proc %p (hwnd=%p,msg=%s,wp=%08lx,lp=%08lx)\n",
GetCurrentThreadId(), proc, hwnd, SPY_GetMsgName(msg, hwnd), wp, lp );
FIXME("%04x:Call window proc %p (hwnd=%p,msg=%s,wp=%08lx,lp=%08lx)\n",
GetCurrentThreadId(), proc, hwnd, SPY_GetMsgName(msg, hwnd), wp, lp );
*result = WINPROC_wrapper( proc, hwnd, msg, wp, lp ); <<<<<- The problem is
here
if (TRACE_ON(relay))
DPRINTF( "%04x:Ret window proc %p (hwnd=%p,msg=%s,wp=%08lx,lp=%08lx)
retval=%08lx\n",
GetCurrentThreadId(), proc, hwnd, SPY_GetMsgName(msg, hwnd), wp, lp, *result );
return *result;
}
I did "repair" (using wine1.5), adding this to except.c:
430a431,433
> case EXCEPTION_READ_FAULT:
> TerminateProcess( GetCurrentProcess(), 1 );
> break;
This works for me, because I can complete the exit, but, is not appropiate.
To reproduce the problem:
Download siap application from:
http://www.afip.gob.ar/aplicativos/siap/archivos/siap.zip
Install It (It is a vb5 application, only next, next with default options).
Download sicoss application from:
http://www.afip.gob.ar/Aplicativos/seguridadSocial/archivos/SICOSS_39_R1-Ma…
Install It (like siap)
Start the application siap.
Add information required for business.
Select business, and click on sicoss (right, upper icon).
Add minimal information required.
Try to exit. Your program hung.
I'll send more information later, including screen shots, but this the problem.
TIA

Executable for reading from Excel file
There is a VB6 application that opens an Excel file and reads some items from
it.
(It does work in Windows.)
When opening with wine, strangely enough, visible is the second instance
....(2) of the window, and it fails to read the number of entries from the
sheet.
Instructions:
Start it
Datei->Klausurdaten laden
This should result in a display of
"5 Kandidaten 1 nicht erschienen 4 Blätter"
I spare things to happen later, as long as this does not work.
I attach the very basic sample spreadsheet for this first step, and I'll try to
attach the executable - both as test case.

https://github.com/mono/maccore/blob/master/src/AudioToolbox/AudioQueue.cs
AudioStreamer.m:
http://code.metager.de/source/xref/ubuntu/one/ios-music/utilities/AudioStre…
Upon encountering that error, the latter app simply repeats the last known
position (like our winealsa/oss drivers do).
The Wine bug is possibly in mmdevdrv.c:get_current_aqbuffer_position. It
always struck me that there's some "return 0" not preceded by
"if(mode==BUFPOS_ABSOLUTE) /* add This->written_frames */"
As a consequence, GetPosition returns 0, which possibly breaks winmm, DSound
and anyone else using that API.
I have a patch series that revisits that function...
The render tests show that audible audio resumes normal operations past that
half second, so aborting the CA queue or returning an error to the application
(e.g. AUDCLNT_E_DEVICE_INVALIDATED) is to be avoided IMHO. (Of course, adding
support of DEVICE_INVALIDATED to Wine's winmm and DSound is another task).

This appears to be affecting Ultima IX as well (AppDB page for the gog.com
edition has been linked to this bug). Same quartz error concerning MPEG-1
system streams. Movies play without sound and completely black though they can
be skipped by hitting escape.
In Ultima IX's case, the u9.exe binary is linked against DXMedia to play the
video which is a re-named .AVI file containing MPEG-1 video.
I have not tested the native quartz.dll workaround yet.

I have linked to the Beta, but I believe you may need a FilePlanet subscription
to download. If so I can provide any traces or anything...
The game gets as far as the server list, and can see all the servers and all
the information about them, however never actually connects. All other
networking functionality such as the built in chat works, except for connecting
to servers.
When you click connect, the terminal outputs this (every time):
fixme:winsock:_remap_optname Unknown optname 22, can't remap!
fixme:winsock:WS_setsockopt Unknown IPPROTO_IP optname 0x00000016
I'll attach the full +winsock output too, but it's very big which is why I
pasted the seperately.

Summary: Broken FILE_EXECUTE mapping

Status: NEW

Assignee: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org

Some Windows applications (Office 2010 for instance) save the files with owner
and world ACLs that grant FILE_READ_DATA, FILE_WRITE_DATA and FILE_EXECUTE
permissions. FILE_EXECUTE causes the Unix execute permissions to be set on the
file. Already this is wrong: these are documents, not Unix binaries or scripts.
But it also causes trouble to uses in that this causes some Unix file managers
to try to execute the file when the user double-clicks on it, instead of
looking for an application that can open it. Thus the user gets a confusing
'cannot execute' error and must go through the 'Open with' contextual menu to
actually be able to edit their documents.
The thing is that, as far as I can tell, this FILE_EXECUTE to +x permission
mapping is bogus. From the MSDN:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb432380%28v=vs.85%29.aspx
FILE_EXECUTE
Data can be read into memory from the file using system paging I/O.
This flag is irrelevant for device and intermediate drivers.
So if the MSDN is right FILE_EXECUTE has nothing with making it possible to
execute the file and thus the maping makes no sense.
This issue happens in server/file.c in file_access_to_mode() and sd_to_mode().

sd_to_mode:525 world Mask=1200a9 new_mode= 775
There's a concern that some applications might set the flag and check it later.
There is no known case though. The closest is that Office 2010 does read the
ACL of the files it opens and then writes it to the file it saves but it
obviously has no trouble with files that are not marked +x.
Still, because of this concern this may be a good candidate for Staging.

I have recently installed Fedora 19 x86_64 (fresh install, not an upgrade),
replacing Fedora 17 x86_64. The kernel is 3.9.9.
I am now attempting to install several Windows applications (all 32-bit) that
had been successful installed and executed on Fedora 17. I installed Wine and
the first of the Windows applications, which installed and executes
successfully. Installing a dependency for the second application produced the
following messages:-

The Jet40Sp3_comp.exe is the exact same .exe that had been installed and
executed on Fedora 17.
The install failed with Wine 1.5.27 and fails with Wine 1.6-0.rc2. Are there
any other diagnostics I can provide?

While "Heroes of Might & Magic V" works well, the extension "Hammers of Fate"
patchlevel 2.1 (aka. 2.01) crashes upon 3D initialisation (after displaying one
still image).
I'm using an "early 2009" NVidia 9400GM Mac mini with OSX 10.5.8. and XQuartz
2.6.1.
The crash occurs with both XQuartz 2.6.1 as well as XQuartz 2.5.(1?), with
Wine-1.3.21 with the one post 1.3.21 swapchain patch (I had hoped that it would
make a difference) and with Wine-1.1.24.
UseGLSL makes no difference, nor does ORM=fbo or backbuffer.
I've not tried out the original HoF version 2.0 without patch.
One other weird note: The app provides msvcp71.dll and msvcr71.dll in the
Heroes...\bina1\ directory. They get loadded by default. If I override them
with the builtins, after the crash, Wine won't end (Wine's desktop window
remains open) and displays:

15 minutes later, it still hangs and I invoke killall -INT wineserver.

https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=52041 the app installer still
crashes, the last line from the log is:
0009:fixme:urlmon:SecManagerImpl_GetZoneMappings Default action is not
implemented
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x433660
(thread 0009), starting debugger...
It could suggest that the application does not like the stub return from
GetZoneMappings.

DM Genie is a computer program for players and game masters running the Third

playing game. DM Genie can also be customized to any game system that is based
on 20-sided dice. DM Genie takes care of the math and rules so you can focus on
the game! Using DM Genie, you can create adventures, manage your characters and
monsters, and keep track of anything that happens to them. Try it free today!
If you're not a DM, you will love Player Genie, a lighter version of DM Genie
designed for players of 3rd edition RPGs. The PC Leveling Wizard will guide you
in creating your character. During the game, use it to keep track of your
inventory, add feats or spells and get their description at the click of a
mouse. If one of your ability score changes, all your characteristics are
recalculated instantly - skill bonuses, attack bonuses, armor class.
DM Genie will change the way you run your games - for the better! Faster,
easier, and just plain more fun! But DM Genie is NOT a role playing game by
itself - to enjoy it fully, you will still need your Player's Handbook, DMG and

Lord of the Rings Online crashes at several points, this is a random example
Dear developers,
I play Lord of the Rings Online maybe for a year on my notebook (Lenovo IdeaPad
Flex 10, x86-64, Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela).
Reporting for Wine 1.6.2 as this is the official release for my distro but also
experienced very similar crashes still with Wine-Staging 1.7.51.
The crashes occur in the launcher _before_ the login screen. The game client
runs just without problems AFAIK (except of performance) but the original
launcher I think is more complex. I've read that people don't need PyLotRO any
more but I'm forced to use it.
Maybe in ca. 1/6 of the launcher runs it completes to the launch of the game.
In ca. 5/6 of the cases there is a crash or freeze. The points where the
crashes occur are various. Just attaching here the output of the first crash I
just caught.
I have a theory that the launcher detects the previous crash somehow and by the
next launch it gets a bit further and by the next one yet further until it
recovers completely - but this could be my speculation only.
I can make a collection of the various crash kinds if you want but I don't know
if I should file separate bugs. Let's start with this one.

Log file with WINEDEBUG=+all
I've tried on several occasions to run Golang compiled programs. I've tried
cross-compiled programs and programs compiled directly under Windows. The
results are the same. Things that involve "asynchronous" interaction
frequently hang.
Here is a dirt simple example:
package main
import (
"log"
"net/http"
)
func main() {
log.Printf("Hello");
resp, err := http.Get("http://www.google.com/")
if err!=nil {
log.Printf("Error: %v", err)
} else {
log.Printf("Response: %v", resp)
}
log.Printf("Done");
}
I'm attaching a log for this program with WINEDEBUG set to +all (since I have
no idea how to filter it down). Since the output was enormous, I truncated it
to the last 1000 lines. If you need more, let me know.
Any suggestions on how to workaround this or help to debug it? I don't know
much about WINE, but I'll gladly help since this issue has really been a thorn
in my side.
If you want to build the executables under Linux, I posted a short guide to
making this work at:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/golang-nuts/tiller/golang-nuts/A…
I set the following environment variables before compiling:
export GOOS=windows;
export GOARCH=386;
export CGO_ENABLED=1;
export CXX=i686-w64-mingw32-g++;
export CC=i686-w64-mingw32-gcc
I hope I covered everything.
Thanks.

In Wine 1.7.38 (32-bit prefix), Lemmings for Windows crashes after drawing the
"you rescued all the lemmings" screen or after the user selects Exit from the
menu.
(Lemmings for Windows is a Win32s-based Windows 3.1 port of Lemmings and Oh No!
More Lemmings)
I didn't have time to teach myself how to bisect down to the specific commit
causing the problem (tutorial URLs welcome), but quick tests using the various
Wine builds available via PlayOnLinux indicate that it's a regression that
appeared somewhere between Wine 1.3.37 and 1.4.0.
NOTE: I only use POL as a convenient multi-WINEPREFIX launcher. It's a fresh,
plain-vanilla Wine prefix and the copy of Wine 1.7.38 comes from the Ubuntu
PPA.
Also, notes to anyone else who has the game and wants to do some testing:
1. The buttons on the lemming job-selection toolbar at the bottom of the game
window only started responding to mouse clicks somewhere between Wine 1.7.15
and 1.7.16. Use the numeric row of the keyboard (1 through +) to select
on-screen buttons in older versions of Wine.
2. The animated credits footer in the title screen and the in-game fast-forward
functionality run normally in 1.3.24 but are already at least twice as fast as
intended 1.3.37, so their "speed-limiter is a no-op" misbehaviour on 1.7.38 is
unrelated.

This appears to be related to the above.
++++
DVDFab Platinum 4.1.2.0 and 5.0.2.0 do not read the registration codes from the
WINE registry after successful entry. This may have something to do with the
developers switching to VS2008 for the recent versions of the program.
The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/DVDFab entry containing the registration key
tallies with the one I tested on my Windows machine, so storing the key does
not seem to be the issue.

Finereader 9 Terminal Error Messages
Hi, I already posted a bug about FineReader, but I made a misstake, so here is
the right Bug:
When installing Finereader 9 the Installation Wizards stops suddenly shortly
before the ending when the message is something like:
Installing Services
The Error Log in the Terminal is below in the attachment.
I have already tried to fix the problem by reinstalling wine, but the problem
exists furthermore.

As the title says, scrolling the map area with keyboard arrow keys is slow,
jerky, laggy. Alternatively, scrolling with a mouse works as expected.
Scrolling with both keys and mouse works fine in the Red Alert 2 expansion
pack, Yuri's Revenge, though.

There seems to be a regression. 1.7.54 allowed S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat
to run with sound (albeit somewhat scratchy for me).
In 1.7.55 sound no longer works, at least in the intro videos and the main menu
(which is as far as I tested).
Tested using a brand new 32-bit prefix on a Debian Jessie 64-bit host. The Test
Sound button in winecfg works fine.
If I run the game in Window mode and have pavucontrol running at the same time,
I see the xrEngine.exe audio stream appear (as well as one already opened
called Steam.exe), but no sound is produced from either of those.
Even while the game is running, I can re-open winecfg in the same prefix and
hit Test Sound and that continues to work.
Let me know what kind of WINEDEBUG trace you require, if any. The standard
console output doesn't appear to be useful. I'm expecting this is related to
the switch to PulseAudio, but I'm happy to regression test if that would help.

Attempting to launch the video game Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed results
in a black screen/window. The game is unable to load its assets as these are
located on several encrypted .M00 and .toc CD images, as well as one .M01 CD

Hello,
I use the Fiio e10 external USB dac as a "sound card".
My PulseAudio-enabled Archlinux box works mostly very well with it. I did the
following to get it working:
1. Set up correct sampling frequency (96000) in the PulseAudio setup. However,
some programs (especially games) were still making trouble.
2. Set up correct sampling frequency for OpenAL in /etc/alsoft.conf. This has
solved all problems I had - except Wine, unfortunatelly.
3. Sound in Wine doesn't work very well. It is hard to describe, but it is
really messed up. Games don't work and the sound test in winecfg doesn't work
either.
I am searching for a way of how to try and fix at least the sampling rate (I
ASSUME that it might be the root cause), but neither winecfg nor regedit allow
to specify it.
I keep getting this error:
ALSA lib pcm.c:7843:(snd_pcm_recover) underrun occurred
Do you have any idea of what to do?
If I use the built-in sound card, sound works well, but that's not the solution
I like.

When launching Age of Empires II - The Conquerors using Wine versions later
than 1.7.13, the initial 800x600 launch screen is black. Selections can still
be made by blinding clicking.
I am using Wine on an up-to-date Arch Linux system, kernel version
3.16.1-1-ARCH. I was able to exactly replicate this behavior in Virtualbox
using an up-to-date Arch Linux install and a new, empty wine prefix. Launching
Age of Empires (non-Conquerors expansion) also launches with a black screen.
Downgrading from Wine version 1.7.25 to version 1.7.13 or earlier solves the
issue. The game launches and runs flawlessly under version 1.7.13.

I am running a Windows console application under Wine which has no visible
output except a few lines to console. The machine is a server and has no GUI
started.
However when running the application like this:
WINEDEBUG=-all wine Myapp.exe
I still get the message "Application tried to create a window, but no driver
could be loaded. Make sure that your X server is running and that $DISPLAY is
set correctly." in the console although all debug output should be suppressed
by the WINEDEBUG variable.
The application runs just fine, btw, but I am using wine in a bash script and
this message is annoying. I can see no way to suppress it except for starting a
fake X11 display or using something like Xvgm, which I'd rather not do because
of unnecessary overhead for a simple line of text.

On stereo speakers and with a sound card supporting more than 2 channels, sound
sources in Deus Ex: Human Revolution are only heard in one speaker and fade out
when in the center. Git bisect gives:
commit a3f33daa6ab7156b26ad1378d49e8af6666b062d
Author: Mark Harmstone <hellas(a)burntcomma.com>
Date: Wed Dec 31 21:34:47 2014 +0000
winealsa: Support up to 6 channels.
Since I set all audio outputs in winecfg to stereo, this suggests that Deus Ex:
HR does not respect this setting.
Deus Ex: HR uses an FMOD backend. I tried to reproduce the problem with other
games using FMOD; I managed to launch Bioshock 2, which seemed to have the same
issue (sound effects playing in only one speaker each) before crashing.
I'm using:

ALSA-1.0.28

The issue arises while building wow64. At the very end of the build procedure,
just after building xcopy, the procedure tries to add some links and command
"rm -f server && ln -s ../wine/server server" fails lamenting that the "server"
directory exists and it is not empty.
The build directory contains two sub-directories named "fonts" and "server"
both containing a single Makefile. Both directories where not created while
building previous Wine versions and are the source of the issue.
To build wow64 i run:
configure
make depend
make
make install
in that order. Both directories are created when running the "make depend"
command. I temporarily solved the problem adding to the build script some lines
of code that remove the directories, but the makefiles probably are in need of
a check: they should not create the fonts and server directories in the first
place.
Thanks
Simone

To reproduce, try the following in Windows (tested on XP) and in "wine
cmd"/"windconsole cmd" (tested on wine-1.7.16-133-gd8ca8c2):
Windows XP:
C:\> del asdf
Couldn't find C:\asdf
C:\> echo %ERRORLEVEL%
0
Wine:
C:\>del asdf
asdf: File Not Found
C:\>echo %ERRORLEVEL%
1
This is a potential incompatibility with applications which expect del to
return 0 in this case.

I can install this software (with a minor error that the update service can't
be installed, but this would be OK)
When I try to start the program the startup sound and the GUI appear, but the
GUI does not respond and crashes after about 2 minutes, because KDE detects
that it is inresponsive. It also gives an error pop-up on a critical error and
that the GUI needs to close due to this error.
The log shows error messgaes regarding to msvcp120.dll._Cnd_init given in the
attachment.
