As the cursor moves over a square, the station's name is displayed in a popup placed near the square. Under wine, the popup is drawn in the appropriate place but no text is displayed in the popup. This problem is consistently present and repeatable on demand. This problem was first observed under Wine 0.9.55 and is unchanged under 0.9.56. When I try to launch ArcMap, however, a splash screen come up, but while the splash screen is up an error occurs "The program ArcMap.exe has encountered a serious problem..." With some help on IRC, I ran the program under winedbg, where I got the error "err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {00000100-0000-0010-8000-00aa006d2ea4} could be created for context 0x1". It was suggested I try installing mdac28 and jet40 via winetricks, which I did, but continued to get errors. See http://paste.lisp.org/display/88498 where the first paste is the original error, the second is after I tried "winetricks mdac28 jet40", and the third is after (again as suggested on IRC) trying to install dcom98 via winetricks. I have since removed the overrides for dcom98, as they did not appear to be helpful. In order to debug this software, you can get a 60 day trial at http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcview/eval/evaluate.html as long as you're willing to give them a whole lot of identifying information. Let me know if I can provide any more information to help debug this issue. I'm now trying to run games I got working on my other laptop with a nvidia GPU The games work fine up untill it actually needs to use 3d. Responsive and colourful, as it it works perfectly. Then when going to 3d the frame rate is very low, its unresponsive and all the gfx appear to be very very bright and washed out. The sound also works fine, always, no artifacts, pauses or stuttering. It is possible to load a saved scene after you went once through the (long) "start new game" introduction sequence. The application's log file (Ogre.log) mentions that some object could not be found as the cause of the exception Function: SceneManager::getLight Description: Cannot find Light with name youthclub_youthclub_1. An issue possibly related might be that after playing for some time (or whatever the bug trigger is), one may enter a scene where the main character is not rendered, as if its graphics were missing. The log is then similar. The game is not playable anymore from that point on, one must return to the main menu. Even a save/load cycle does not restore the character once it disappeared. Be sure to install the "XP 1.0.1" patch as well as the main program (as I mention in the test results), otherwise the application hangs during startup. Also be sure to select the OpenGL renderer as I explain in AppDB. This affects wine-0.9.61..wine-1.1.11 (wine-1.1.14 suffers from a regression, that's a distinct issue). Using Ubuntu Hardy and the XOrg Intel video driver. But it seems like there is either something wrong with wine or Civ2 code, since it takes now very long, when you see your own cities on screen. From the timing, it might be related to the amount of moves the computer players do. My thought is that the game thinks you can see all units and does the moves slowly as it is done for visible units. But you dont see most enemy units, so this is a bug, which creates a big slowdown. Often it helps as a workaround, when you center the screen on some other part of the screen, the roundturn is much faster, until the current screen moves to your cities because of a seen movement. In this case, it becomes slow again. Since i have WinXP in a VM, i can test the game there too and there it works as expected: Fast roundturns, independent of screen content. While using the SCTS program (downloadable from [1]) I have the following problem: When I minimize the window and then display it again, the position of some GUI elements has changed. This can be seen in the attached screenshots, it is reproducable every time. Under native Windows XP, the minimizing works. I just noticed that the window layout will also break when I switch from one KDE virtual desktop to another. Another issue that may or may not be related to this is that under Wine, I can resize the program window to any size I want. But under Windows XP, the SCTS program enforces a certain minimum size for its window. System: - 64 bit openSuse 11.1, window managers tested were KDE 3.5 and TWM. I am using WoW version 3.3.5 and my computer is running Ubuntu 11.04 64bit, thus PulseAudio as sound server. Steps to reproduce: 1. Switch to an unused tty console. 2. Run the following command: xinit -- :1 & ck-launch-session & (Which will create a new X Server and add sound to it) In my case, the new X Server is allocated at the tty8. 3. Start WoW. If the application starts without sound, it might work to change the Game Sound Output options around. 4. Switch back to your previous tty, e.g. tty7 5. Switch to the tty with WoW, e.g. tty8 You will notice sound has gone away. Expected results: Sound should be still playing, like if the switches were never performed. The only entry in Skype's Audio settings are "default" but nothing comes out or goes in. I should mention that during the program launch, it experiences one crash (crash report box) and one access violation (small access violation box). I'll try and find/create bugs for those cases as well. Apart from Skype not detecting any sound resources (and trying to display the default start screen in Firefox) it works more or less flawless, I'd say 90%, and if we can get this bug fixed, then it would be really damn close to 100% functionality. Yes, I know that there is a Linux client, but this is nothing short of a shame when it comes to features. Well, there are a LOT of messages that pops up in console when this application is launched, I'll give you a way to reproduce this bug instead of attaching a lot of useless logs. Of course if you need anything from me with regards to zero in on this bug I'm more than happy to accommodate. 1. Download from skype.com the windows client. 2. Start the installer, and when it is done with the downloading it freezes/halts. 3. Kill it/Exit it. 4. Find Skype.msi in .wine/drive_c/users/Public/Application\ Data/Skype/\{D6F879CC-59D6-4D4B-AE9B-D761E48D25ED\}/ and run it with "msiexec /i Skype.msi" 5. The colors ingame are messed up after opening the save or load game dialog boxes. The graphics almost look like a photo negative. I've attached an example screenshot to this bug report. In the console the game spams this after this has been triggered: fixme:d3d_surface:d3dfmt_p8_init_palette No palette set. This effect persists until the game is exited and reloaded, however calling up any other menu or dialog in game works perfectly fine and does not cause this bug. It is a regression, but due to another regression with this game, (which I have not yet filed because I'm still running it's regression test and which affects this bug) I have not yet performed a regression test for this bug. Among the files extracted are bmp files which are used in the installer wizard itself, including the very first page of the wizard. Under Wine, most of the bitmap files get extracted in corrupted form which results in none of the bitmaps showing up on the first page of the wizard and some not showing up on other pages of the wizard. Spiceworks uses an NSIS installer, the contents of which can be extracted using 7zip. I have compared the files extracted by Wine with those actually in the installer and they are of different size and binary content which clearly indicates corruption of data by Wine. I've tried taking the literal dlls from my own windows 7 install, i've also tried following everything else that others have said to do but it just refuses to run. I am currently using the trial download that they offer you on their home page. It's refusing to run and just shows a ie window and it says "server not found" then when i close that window dreamweaver just dies. Gimp gets the current localisation information from registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\International\Locale I then tried to run a modified appinstall script gimp.ahk which determines current locale language with Autohotkey's internal %A_Language% variable. Under Windows XP German this modified script detects language correctly and runs it errorfree. Running the script in "German Standard" locale (0407) Wine installation on Ubuntu 8.04 doesn't work. Except for the gl_info->limits.blends hack I only have pretty generic style complaints (e.g. an unnecessary newline before get_projection_matrix(), an opening brace on the same line as the 'if', statements on the same line as the braceless 'if'). About the blend matrices count, the proper fix is probably to add a field to d3d_info and populate it from the vertex caps in wined3d_adapter_init_gl_caps() (and also update glsl_vertex_pipe_vp_get_caps() to advertise 4 blend matrices). You'll then need to replace a few uses of gl_info->limits.blends in wined3d with the d3d_info value. At a quick look only wined3d_cs_exec_set_transform() and prune_invalid_states() need that treatment. I guess a test would be nice to have too. After you clean the patch up just send it to wine-patches. The game used to run on high details on my ATI Radeon 3400 card, now they barely work on low. The real problem is the graphics drawing engine - some parts are not even drawn at all (ex armor of the TAU commander) Also these objects tend to crash the game instantly. Even the low detail graphics keep this problem even in the game menu. Fonts also have bacame unreadable. I tried to use console to get informations on what may be wrong, but there are only standard fixme lines dropping like mad. Kinda agree kinda don't. Yes less applications but there is a limit. One ping service per application is the valid limit but then it comes when will you stop the ping service. Remember Linux, Freebsd and Solaris have per application security. I can talk way better about Linux. So a global service for running ping shared between all wine applications is directly breaking the Posix world security models. Same with the set capability on the loader to fix things. Both are using a sledge hammer for what should be carefully done. Wine project for a very long time has taken the point of view that posix security models can be disregarded. Lets say I wish to individually cgroup wrap a Wine applications into individually name-spaces at the moment. Anything done by shared services for applications become problematic. Binding to ports, pinging, sending network traffic these are all per applications things and need to operate per application .exe so items like Linux Security Modules(LSM:think Selinux, apparmor) and cgroups can in fact work. There are other issues like Linux binfmt-misc not being supported properly. If binfmt-misc worked properly the "setcap cap_net_raw+epi" could have been put in the .exe file instead of the loader so be per application. This would mean that using environmental vars to set wine settings would have to mirrored in xattrs or a file pointed to by a xattr containing instructions for the loader to follow. binfmt is where the Linux kernel picks up file set capabilities. You will not find no caps set on any native Linux loader. getcap /lib/ld-linux.so.2 and on on will all return no cap set. So the fact that getcap on /usr/bin/wine-preloader on Linux at times returns capabilities set is in fact a bug coming from poor integration. In fact there are important reasons why capabilities should not be set on loaders. A loader does not contain a predefined task. So granting capabilities to a loader is granting those capabilities to every application run by that loader so breaking the per application security model into bits. I was the one who pointed out that setcap privilage could be used instead of just running as root. But truly its only minorally better than running the applications as root. There are ways using CAP_NET_RAW to perform a privilege escape by messing with traffic. CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE also in some cases allows privilege escapes by for example overriding local ldap server with your own yes the cannot bind to under 1024 on Linux is a security restriction to protect core services from random applications replacing them. Almost Linux every capability provides a means to take control the system if it configured in attackable ways. So using setcap is truly a mother of a hack with very bad security ramifications. So neither of the Caps users of wine are having to set are harmless. Its more luck than good management that systems are not being hacked because of wine. Poor integration with the host OS is a fairly major wine problem. Lot of windows does X so should wine without proper consideration that there might be 2 or 3 ways to achieve X and the other ways may fit the host OS security model way better. Basically from my point calling a privileged executable/service to perform a ping from a Windows application running in wine should not be a fall back position it should be the default. This is what Linux and other posix applications do when they want ping data. Behaving like a native application demands it. Not breaking native OS security demands it. If wine is taking a path that is completely different to how a host native applications are expected todo it then its a hack and need to be serous-ally considered if this is anywhere near correct because the security risk are no joke. Inspired by Brunos idea I've added a similar proof-of-concept patch to Wine Staging, which addresses exactly these problems: https://github.com/wine-compholio/wine-staging/blob/master/patches/iphlpapi… Using exec in Wine in general is not necessarily bad, but it would of course be better to have only one "ping service" running instead of one application for each request. Setting "sudo setcap cap_net_raw+epi /usr/bin/wine-preloader" from a security point of view is extremely horrible. 1) not every application requires these privileges. 2) How much code really need to be running with these privilages As what is said under windows you don't need privilege todo these operation. Ping due to having privilege flag does not mean wine needs it on the loader. Question should wine have a /usr/bin/wine-icmp that is coded to perform all the icmp functionality of Windows. --The privilege issue is certainly outside of Wine but I think it's better to leave this open. Otherwise equivalent bugs will be opened over and over again.-- Yes privilege issue is kinda outside wine. But wine has to operate correctly in these privileged environments. Sometimes this means breaking parts off into independent applications to perform higher privilege tasks. If something should be broken off that is a wine question. Can wine icmp.dll function if all the functionality of the icmp.dll was implemented as a native independent executable that icmp.dll call by exec or equal. If so this is most likely what should happen as then "setcap cap_net_raw+epi" would only have to be granted on that limited code area. Harder issue is the fact you cannot sudo setcap cap_net_raw+epi some.exe file and have that executable only with the lifted privilege. Binding ports under 1024 being restricted exists for reason. Again this is another item that could be done by an indpendant application to the loader. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authbind is example of this. Binding ports under 1024 it would be great there was a file /etc/wine/ports listing what ports wine applications could in fact bind on. Like you don't want dhcp/dns ports taken over by a wine application because you were just restarting a server. Yes these independent applications could check if the executable the loader is using has the right applied cap values before processing the request as well as having special configuration files. The font can be downloaded for free at: http://hwm3.gyao.ne.jp/shiroi-niwatori/nkf11_magicum_texturae.zip Windows standard CJK fonts NSimSun, PMingLiu, MS UI Gothic, Tahoma are also required to completely reproduce the attached screenshots. 2. Compile attached tunihan.c using MinGW on Windows with command line: gcc -otunihan.exe tunihan.c -lgdi32 3. Run the generated tunihan.exe under Windows, with global non-Unicode program locale set to English (US). Attached screenshot "enUS-windows.png" should be reproduced. 4. Copy/link all Windows fonts into Wine. 5. Run the generated tunihan.exe under Wine using command line: LANG=en_US.utf8 wine tunihan.exe Attacehed screenshot "enUS-linux.png" should be reproduced. Test environment: Windows: A Chinese Edition of Windows 7 with global non-Unicode program locale set to English (US). Wine: Wine 1.5.4 on Arch Linux 3.3.5, with all windows fonts symlinked into "C:\windows\Fonts" in Wine. Notes: A. The attached font, "nkf11_magicum_texturae.ttf", is an incomplete fictional glyph set for ASCII characters. It is chosen as a test font because it is missing glyphs for a number of ASCII symbols (e.g. '[', ']'), is clearly distinguishable from any potential substitution font, and is clearly not a Windows standard font. B. This behavior can't be reproduced using AppLocale. The Windows machine must have its global non-Unicode program locale set to English (US). C. tunihan.c writes 7 lines of texts to a Window: Line 1: A line of ASCII/CJK characters in a Simplified Chinese font Line 2: A line of ASCII/CJK characters in a Traditional Chinese font Line 3: A line of ASCII/CJK characters in a Japanese font Line 4: A line of ASCII/CJK characters in the test font Line 5: A line of ASCII characters in the test font, using TextOutW Line 6: A line of ASCII characters in the test font, using TextOutA Line 7: A line of ASCII/CJK characters in Tahoma In line 4, Windows is providing font substitution for the test font through a Japanese substitution font (deduced from unified Han character shape), thus displaying all ASCII/CJK characters correctly, despite that there isn't such a rule defined in the registry. Wine failed to do the same. On the other hand, Windows doesn't provide the same font substitution if a completely-ASCII string is TextOut-ed. The CJK characters are chosen to include both unified Han characters with a different shape in each font and non-unified characters for each individual font. Implications: 1. This bug may be related to a few weird CJK script rendering problems. 2. This bug may be related to a few western font rendering problems when CJK fonts are installed. 3. I'm not sure if the issue is even CJK related. Here's how I came to this: there are lots of programs that don't start in wine unless you do special tricks, such as copying dlls to folder where the .exe resides or to system32, or something else. If you search the bugzilla for import_dll, you'll find a lot of bugs having this kind of errors: err:module:import_dll Library something.dll not found Mostly, questions arise as if software has installed correctly or something else. But, I've made a test, installing it in windows, and launching directly, that is without specifying "start in" parameter (as it would with .lnk files). And in windows it works perfectly. So, I've exported the registry from XP box and compared it to identical installation in wine. The only mentions of dlls in question are in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDlls Google says, that this registry node is supposed only to track if installed libraries are used by any installed application or not. But it seems, that in windows, ntdll looks up into this registry part in order to try to find where the libraries in question are located. I start a race and the game runs fine but after i get my rewards the game will freeze. I still hear sound but the game is unresponsive. My hardware is very old, a core 2 duo and a geforce 8400GS, but the issue is related to software, as others are reporting it regardless of hardware. Infinite loading screen- a situation in which the game "loads" for a very long time (over 10 minutes) or an infinite time (over 20 minutes observed), without showing signs of crashing or otherwise bad behavior. Upon trying to quit this infinite loading screen (by using ctrl + alt + backspace) my finger missed and I ended up pressing F12! Lo and behold the screen went to console (or whatever that limbo zone might be called), and the game started running in the background! I immediately started switching alt + Fn 'till I found alt + F7 and the game was working! Now every time I play the game I press ctrl + alt + F1 whenever it starts loading. The game now loads within 20 seconds (!!!), a huge difference. There's obviously some sort of bug here, and I wonder why switching to console releases the loading screen. Could be solvable, and it could be an issue that affects other areas of the game as well, so it might be worth figuring out. As in there is a noticeable stop and then continues. This is heavily evident in Starcraft and World of Warcraft. I think this is a bug with the DirectX component as when using the OpenGL renderer for warcraft (ie, effectively bypassing DirectX emulation) there is no stutter. The same amount of disk activity occurs though, which suggests that something in the DirectX emulation is blocking the thread. If this could be fixed then it will probably improve the performance of many games.
