Yay, another dupe of the "Blobby Volley" bug #4432. Reverting its fix
(27d2b9b81490ca41c23ac3ad1fe057a8d8f44aea) makes the old problem appear again.
So, fixed upstream since 1.3.9.

patch: Let the player thread call waveOutReset itself.
Nobody had noticed this is behaviour introduced with 0.9.39
by commit f44bc89bc41b2b8d75eeb4fc02f5aa587d84c13c
Having the player call waveOutReset instead introduces a maximum delay of 0.333
ms before making room for the next sound. I tested the patch with Chip's
Challenge and it sounds ok.
I hope it fixes bug #18511 too -- if yes, it's a duplicate.
Conceptually, I'm not fully satisfied with reverting the patch because I think
that an app can expect waveOutReset to either return INVALHANDLE when the
handle is closed, or return NOERROR. It should not crash because winmm is amid
closing. I.e. I'm not convinced the original patch is guilty of assuming
thread-safety in winmm.
waveOutReset and waveOutGetPosition are 2 functions likely to be called from
another thread.

The point is your USB G930 headset is wireless
PA server often rewind the audio stream by snd_pcm_rewind() when another
application start playing audio but some of the audio signal has already sent
to your headset
dsound mainly rely on the sound card driver can provide accurate position in
GetCurrentPostion() to mix the audio streams (e.g. "open door" and "gun fire"
sound effect in game ) and write the mixed audio to the sound card
Can you detect any delay when you speak to the mic and hear back your voice in
the headphone ?

My sound card was the on-board Intel HDA for my motherboard, Asus M4A78 Plus.
Since my audio jack headset (Sennheiser PC150) that used the Intel HDA broke (I
broke it on accident :P), I disabled that sound card in the BIOS and I am using
my new USB Logitech G930 headset with Pulseaudio.
Pulseaudio and wine are configured to use 48000 sample rate, but I also tried
using the regular 44100 rate before with the same results. I've tried pretty
much every combination imaginable of vanilla-alsa/3rd-party-pulseaudio drivers
in wine and with-or-without pulseaudio itself installed, with identical
results.
I don't know what the default device was for the Intel HDA or know how to find
out even if my headset was still working, but I would guess it was plughw
because I had to use that for TeamSpeak3 to function before.
.. The rest of your post I can't make sense of past winealsa.drv, and I'm
assuming you're not speaking to me. If that is incorrect, let me know.

A closer look at the line numbers in the backtrace shows that it's not the call
to waveOutReset after PlaySound_WaitDone in proc_PlaySound that is causing the
crash, rather than the other call following SetEvent(psStopEvent).
SetEvent(psStopEvent);
waveOutReset(PlaySoundList->hWave);
The explanation is a race condition. The player (P) reacts upon psStopEvent
and calls waveOutClose, while the app (A) calls waveOutReset.
ALSA's omr->ring_buffer_size can only be 0 after the ALSA ring buffer gets
deallocated, that is when the handle is closed.
Obviously A:waveOutReset is invoked early enough that the hWave handle is not
rejected as already closed. The app's thread is then pre-empted,
P:waveOutClose gets in between and when the app's thread resumes execution of
waveOutReset, it operates on a stale handle and state.
As a work-around, you may comment out the above waveOutReset. The drawback is
that a playing sound can keep playing for upto 0.667s before making room for
the next sound.
Now I'd really like to know whether it's winmm's job to prevent concurrent
execution of waveOut* and waveOutClose() -- or any other 2 winmm functions for
that matter -- or whether the apps must avoid such race conditions.

While libudev has only recently been marked API stable,
already many distros have been moving away from hal,
which has been put in maintenance mode by its upstream.
As hald is (most probably) not running on such distros,
mountmgr.sys won't work there.
Looking at what's been recently done
in xorg-server git master, it does look very complicated.
Of course, libudev is not cross-platform, but (according
to the upstream) hal barely was.

what is the default device ( hw , plughw or dsnoop ) and your sound card
different sound cards support different capture rate/ playback rate
how the voice audio is transfer through the network (resampled to lower rate
and mono or S16 to U8 to minimize network traffic ) this affect the latency and
the quality
if your usb mic only support 16000Hz, and playback to your teammate's sound
card which use 44100Hz
look at winealsa.drv/dscapture.c
start capturing only need snd_pcm_start()
why does it need play_looping and CommitAll() ?
Try run those compilance test
WINETEST_INTERACTIVE=1 dsound_test caputre
WINETEST_INTERACTIVE=1 dsound_test duplex

I have what I'm quite sure is the same problem with a usb headset (logitech
g930). Using either alsa or the 3rd party wine-pulse driver patch (of course I
also tested with vanilla wine + alsa and without pulse even installed), there
are still problems, so I don't believe this to be solely an alsa issue. Sound
from the mic cuts in and out and sounds awful. As others report, it sounds just
fine in steam along with native linux apps, but in tf2 it's messed up.
Additionally, as others said, the output works fine -- it's just the input, no
matter how wine is configured or patched that I've tried.
On the same machine without pulseaudio using wine's alsa driver but on a
non-usb headset, it worked okay for me a while ago. Unfortunately I broke that
headset, so I can't test if it's still the case. I do not believe this to be a
regression either way.

the patch for 1.3.13 works for wine 1.3.16, too, but there's a weird bug with
some objects (e.g. a snake being divided into many even parts).
Could someone please revise it?

It's unreproducible. This is my first bugzilla entry. Hope i'm doing well :)

The critical section machinery (EnterCriticalSection, LeaveCriticalSection,

cycles polling LockCount instead of using system lock like pthread_mutex_lock
do (please look at http://www.jbox.dk/sanos/source/lib/pthread/mutex.c.html ) .
Suggested solution: throw out custom realization and use pthread_mutex_t,
pthread_mutex_lock, pthread_mutex_unlock and pthread_mutex_lock instead.

Still not checked, but from what I see in changelogs, latest changes completely
screw up the DIB engine mechanics.... so I guess it'll need a big refactoring.
OR, hopefully, latest changes are done to make possible the introduction of
correct DIB handling in wine ?

My experiments stalled when I realized that some parts of wine used critical
sections without even bother calling RtlInitializeCriticalSection first. That's
an abomination and a great example of spaghetti code.

OK not sure it will solve lag of turning character. It only solves software
mouse lag. You don't have to use the env WINE_Cursor with the patch I posted.
I was talking in future, but not sure I have time to incorporate all that
involved to allow you to select custom cursors.
You will see 2 cursors in games that use software cursors, you might not see
any cursor in games that have built in HW cursor.

Um actually been thinking of it, might do a PPA. 1 with wine_pulse one
without.
Also gonna add Wine_Cursor environment, so you can choose the cursor you want.
IE: in gnome
env WINE_CURSOR=Circle wine somecommand.exe
This way you can make a cursor that matches your game, i'll prolly do a
custom1-4, so you could have 4 custom cursors, if you put a env Wine_Cursor it
would default to the way it is now, and if you do nothing it reverts to the way
wine has it.

While using Circuitmaker 2000 pro - when I duplicate a part in a schematic
editor near the bottom edge of the window this cloned part tries to "pan" down
the working area in an uncotrollable way.
The only thing to do is to stop the software and start again so one can loose
an unsaved part of the job.
So I must remember now not to clone schematic parts near the bottom edge of the
Circuitmaker's schematic editor.

commit c82cb23bc2d6afea639e1013643df5e42bc33844
Author: Alexandre Julliard <julliard(a)winehq.org>
Date: Tue Mar 8 19:37:08 2011 +0100
gdi32: Add initial support for a null graphics driver.
The patch cannot be reverted cleanly on the current git but
git checkout c82cb23bc2d6afea639e1013643df5e42bc33844 >>the game crashes
git reset --hard HEAD^ >>no crash, it's starting normally
This bug also affects Sanitarium (an adventure game, developed by ASC Games):
the game crashes while loading Chapter 2. That particular chapter in the game
was always a bit problematic in Wine (although there was no crash): the game
produced the following messages constantly in the console while loading Chapter
2:
err:d3d_surface:IWineD3DBaseSurfaceImpl_CreateDIBSection CreateDIBSection
failed!
err:gdi:alloc_gdi_handle out of GDI object handles, expect a crash
Planescape: Torment also always produced the same messages for me while
running.
Unfortunately, I can't find a demo for PS:Torment, and the demo of Sanitarium
doesn't contain the problematic chapter.
Setting DirectDrawRenderer to opengl (in the registry) "workarounds" the crash
but there are graphical glitches in both games with ddr=opengl.

Running the "Configure Wine" utility brought up an error message window
"winemenubuilder.exe has encountered an error...".
This happened after a clean install of Wine-1.3.10 in ubuntu 10.04 from the
ppa.
No windows applications were installed - I just went to
Applications>Wine>Configure Wine to see what the defaults were and the Error
window popped up. After a while the configuration window appeared and seems to
be ok. I closed the config and error windows and tried it again. No error
message this time, the config window came up ok.
This looks like a first run issue. Perhaps the config window code expects at
least one windows app to have been installed?
This gives a bad impression of wine to a new user.

in dlls/wininet/http.c, lines 3583 and 3593 have a variable named "sun".
Compilation of this file fails with "error: syntax error before numeric
constant". This is because "sun" is redefined to "1" by GCC when compiling,
because it is GCC running on Solaris (and thus "sun" as in "Sun").
Redefining the variable as "Sun" is sufficient to compile the object. To be
more careful, though, I would recommend simply spelling out all the day names.

Reporting against 1.3.15, but IIRC, it's one, maybe two versions older
- I do recall things working correctly not that long ago however.
Basically, after window is minimized, it gets on the list of minimized windows,
but if I Alt-Tab to it, it doesn't get restored, just removed from the list and
becomes unaccessible AFAICT.
My window manager is openbox, in winecfg both "Allow window manager..." options
are checked. If "Allow manager to manage" is unchecked, the window can be
restored through the icon on the desktop.
Interesting note: if both are checked, winecfg can be minimized and restored,
but not 'wine regedit'.

With wine-1.1.38-219-g438ad93, after installing vcrun2005 and corefonts with
winetricks to allow the installer to run, launching the Garmin Training Center
application yields a map that is rendered totally black. Native gdiplus
somewhat alleviates the situation, although the continents still appears to be
black.

Summary: spurious interaction between audio units or wave
devices
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.32
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: winmm&mci
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: hoehle(a)users.sourceforge.net
Somehow, trying and accessing a wave device sometimes manages to stop another
playing sample. Yet the second call is normally returned with
265=MCIERR_DEVICE_OPEN (mapped from 4=MMSYSERR_ALLOCATED).
To reproduce, you need audible sound.
Using my interactive MCI shell from bug #20232 comment #10, try the following
1. open long-playing-sample.wav alias a
2. open sample.wav alias b
3. play a from 0
4. play b from 0 wait
Repeat 4) playing b until a is interrupted (=you hear no more sound). If a ends
normally repeat from step 3. Within less than 30 trials, a's sound will be
interrupted on my single core Linux box, wither either ALSA or OSS, with or
without PulseAudio in Ubuntu Intrepid.
When this happens, try
5. status a mode => "playing"
6. stop a => hangs
7. ^C
It seems more likely to happen after a has finished playing once. Or whatever
Voodoo is needed.

Summary: MSI SQL string comparison operators incorrect...
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.21
Platform: PC
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: msi
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: toonces282002(a)yahoo.com
In MSI, one can run SQL commands like this:
"SELECT
`Dialog`,`Attributes`,`Control_First`,`Control_Default`,`Control_Cancel` FROM
`Dialog` WHERE `Dialog`< 'bar' OR `Dialog` > 'foo'"
Note however that the two conditions that we have placed on the name of the
dialog are technically incorrect. According to Microsoft:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa372021(VS.85).aspx
"For string values, only the = or <> operations are possible. Object value
comparisons are limited to IS NULL and IS NOT NULL."
Accordingly, Microsoft treats the above expression as 'false', whereas msi on
ReactOS is actually using a strcmp to try and evaluate whether a string is
greater or less than another:
*val = ( cond->u.expr.op == OP_EQ && ( sr == 0 ) ) ||
( cond->u.expr.op == OP_NE && ( sr != 0 ) ) ||
( cond->u.expr.op == OP_LT && ( sr < 0 ) ) ||
( cond->u.expr.op == OP_GT && ( sr > 0 ) );
My guess is that this conditional in where.c needs to be adjusted to match the
behavior on Windows.
Doing testing on ReactOS..

When Salammbo is run after being installed and patched it crashes immediatly
after the loading menu appears and does a little animation.
A message box about "encountered a problem..." appears and then you have to
wait quite a lot to make it spit a stacktrace.
The only thing it outputs on being installed is this:
"fixme:storage:create_storagefile Storage share mode not implemented."
The installation process asks for the version of the OS it is installed on, but
that makes no difference on the bug (installing the patch or not also appears
to make no difference. Warning: i haven't tested all combinations, just XP +
patch and windows 2000, 95 without patch).
When run, it has the problem reported on the first line. Here is a stacktrace
(it took quite a long time to get)

When I move the mouse the mouse pointer moves, but in a totally different

I think this because somehow the mouse movements are stacked:
By slowly moving the mouse I managed to get it in the middle of the screen.
Then I move the mouse pointer a bit to the right, then up and then left. First
the mouse pointer moves somewhere else, but after some time(when I continue
moving the mouse left), the cursor moves right, up and then left.
I'm using a simple USB-mouse. I don't think this is because of my hardware
because everybody has this problem with this game.

--- Comment #41 from Jörg Höhle <hoehle(a)users.sourceforge.net> 2011-03-18 12:13:31 CDT ---
I repeated the GetCurrentThreadId() callback test from comment #37 as testbot
jobs 9892 and 9891.
There's an incredibly simple explanation of the behaviour observed since w2k
that does not require QueueUserAPC() or other delayed procedure calls (DP): let
the application thread execute the player!
Obviously then, callbacks invoked synchronously will be executed in the app's
thread, which is the test result for systems since w2k.
Execution in the app's thread is not unknown to Wine, e.g. MCI_PLAY does that
with the MCI_WAIT flag in mciwave and mciseq.
>From a system reliability perspective, hijacking the app's thread is a sensible
move on the side of MS, as by killing the one thread (or process) you remove
everything it does, hence the rest of the system can continue to work
unaffected.
>From a compatibility POV, this is a bad move.
If since w2k calls like midiStreamRestart() and midiStreamOut() are not
asynchronous messages to a concurrently running player and instead drive the
player loop on the calling thread (= the application one's), then I can imagine
a whole class of programs that worked on w9x but hang on newer systems -- e.g.
Heroes, says comment #18.
Not all programs would hang though, those designed around message dispatching
delivered to the app's message queue have a good chance of working with
recursive invocations of Wait/Peek/DispatchMessageA() by a winmm player
executing in the application's thread.
As far as Wine is concerned, I'd favour the w9x behaviour: have the multimedia
players sit in their own thread, even though a proper design causes me
headaches with concurrency and locking issues.
Under this perspective, it looks like an error when player loops that execute
synchronously in the app's thread (like all MCI players, e.g. MCIAVI) never
drain and DispatchMessageA() the app's message queue -- the app may dead-lock
when expected callbacks are not invoked. Is this perhaps an explanation to the
bugs listed in bug #21060, comment #2?

This is the output of elementclient.exe from the time its started to the time
it crashes
Perfectworld has just updated their game called Perfectworld with an expansion
called Genesis (not as silly as it sounds - they have other games).
I've been playing the game without problems for the last couple of years.
However, after this most recent update I am experiencing a great many problems.
The short of it is that after I login and try to enter the game, the game
crashes. The output is included in the attachement.
I hope that we can work together to fix the issues that are making trouble,
because after 2 really fun years with the game, it would be a real shame to
have to stop playing it.
*****************************************
OBSERVATIONS WHILE TRYING TO RUN THE GAME
*****************************************
The game client is called elementclient.exe and symptoms when running under kde
4.6 and gnome are quite different. I've tested this with and without
compositing.
I'm using Fedora 14 with wine 1.3.14
The visible symptoms are as follows.
**** LOADING SCREEN *************
WITH KDE:
---------
The loading screen comes up and as the progress bar progresses the screen
flickers after some delay the login sequence begin
WITH GNOME:
-----------
The loading screen comes up and things seems to progress smoothly and with no
delay the login sequence begins
******** LOGIN ********
The login sequence begins with an animated sequence which can be escaped out of
to login.
WITH KDE
--------
The animation starts fine but then before getting to the login screen the
program will freeze for a bit. Sometimes the login screen appears. Sometimes it
does not
WITH GNOME
----------
The animation starts and continues smoothly until the login sequence begins
****** CHARACTER SELECTION ******
WITH KDE
--------
After quite a long delay the character selection screen comes up, usually the
background is completely black. Sometimes the graphics comes up. Sometimes the
screen completely freezes. Sometimes the elements that allow me to select
characters and enter the game appears. If successful, then the Entering the
Game sequence begins.
WITH GNOME
----------
The character selection screen comes up smoohly and I am able to select which
character I would like to enter the game with. I am then able to start the
Entering the Game sequence.
*********** Entering the Game ***********
WITH KDE
--------
Again.... Sometimes I get the Entering the Game Screen. Sometimes the game
freezes at this point. If the client sucessfully begins to enter the game, then
the screen with progress bar flickers. and then the game crashes.
WITH GNOME
----------
The client goes to the Entering the Game Screen. The screen's animation seems
to work smoothly and then, probably, as the client transits into the game, the
client crashes.

So could you please tell me, what is the latest patch for wine1.3.15, and where
i can get it. Or another, if you just upgraded, maybe you have a deb with patch
in it, and can upload it somewhere?

You have to patch each Wine that you use. I just upgraded from 1.3.1 to
1.3.15, you don't have to upgrade each wine release, especially if the wine you
have is working great for what you use it for.
The problem is a software mouse. In windows it's probably a HW mouse cause of
DirectX, (or the software mouse behaves better because of directX, i'm not
really sure). The reason I know it's a software mouse, is cause if you compile
my patch into wine you generally see 2 mouse pointers. Your themed pointer and
the games pointer that lags behind the themed pointer.
Basically the patch gives you a Faux HW mouse. What I can do is add code that
looks for different mouse pointers, and for each game you could put a cursor
you like just rename it to what I say, and it would use that mouse pointer,
instead of the default Left Pointer.
But again you don't have to update wine if everything is working.

Also, someone added a ton more code to my patch. Like choosing a diff cursor
to use in wine then just the left pointer one. Hiding the mouse with mouse
clicks, I guess in Diablo 2, Diablo trys to hide the HW cursor so someone added
that it doesn't.
I don't mind testing my patch with each major release (1.2,.3,.4, etc). I have
tested with 1.3 and does work. But I won't be including all the other stuff.
Just basic things. If you do need something cause the game hides the HW cursor
I can look into it.

It's not really a patch to make wine better per say. The reason all your mouse
pointers are laggy is a software mouse pointer. This happened in WoW (world of
warcraft, which inspired the patch). Since WoW now has a Hardware OpenGL
cursor, I haven't tested this patch in awhile.
What my patch does is basically use the HW mouse and the theme you have choosen
cursor. If it's truly a software pointer you might see 2. The HW theme
pointer that is smooth, and a laggy mouse pointer from the game that follows
the HW cursor. If someone uses a software cursor, it doesn't hide it (not sure
I could code that anyways). In wow you could write a MPQ file to hide the
software cursor.
I always felt that wine should make use of the Theme'd cursor pointer. It
seems to want to use the white cursor from windows.
And really if you've seen my patch it's like 2 lines. In stead of
create_cursor call it does a: XCreateFontCursor. That's basically it.
It worked in 1.2. Since wow uses HW opengl now I haven't tested on 1.3. I
would be willing to test it for people if it's still being used for other
games.

Since 1.2.1 I cannot get WINE working. Sooner or later it crashes with
rundll32.exe error message in pop-up window and shell32.dll, user32.dll and
so-on-DLLs unimplemented methods error in console.
As there are many errors I first post console output for winecfg - see
attachement. This log was got with empty WINE config, following actions:
1. run winecfg;
2. get window with rundll32.exe error (shell32.dll unimplemented method error
in log);
3. get "Wine configuration" window;
4. switch to "Libraries" tab;
5. try switch to "Graphics" tab an get crash.
Sequence are completely reproducable on the same start conditions.
WINE was compiled from source.
If necessary I can add log for IE6 setup, for example - with it's user32.dll
unimplemented method error.
Best regards,
Cyril Sluchanko

Is it possible with xinput2 to configure the mouse for exclusive capture *when*
the application has keyboard focus? Or is this going to require delicate
negotiation with the window manager as well? (Am painfully ignorant in this
area.)
I think it will be better to implement exclusive mouse event capture rather
than trying (and probably failing) to continually warp the mouse into the
application window. It would be nice (would presumably require Xserver
support) if the mouse stayed inside the window as well, but with exclusive
capture of mouse events that would be just a "nice to have", not necessary.
Can someone who understands the underlying API and interactions say what's
current possible here? The current patch seems *nearly* there!

This is also the case when you are using two monitors with Nvidia's TwinView
mode turned on. This gives you a desktop resolution of (in my case) 3200x1080.
With a fullscreen game on one monitor running at 1920x1080, the mouse will
stray into my other desktop screen and clicks will change focus onto other
items running on that desktop.
The solution in this case is to only run on a single monitor for now, but I
agree, if a fullscreen app has focus, the mouse should not be able to leave
that window.

will not be able to turn all 360 but only a small amount. You would have to
turn the other way to "reset" the amount of degrees you can turn. This
following have been tested from 1.3.9 up to 1.3.15:

This works fine on my Fedora 14 machine, and I've run it on two other machines
with Ubuntu with no problem, but have two other people that tried the same
thing, and seem to be getting nothing passed to the script. The log file should
have a [ followed by the ], but somehow they just get the [ and a truncated
version of the path with no filename at all.
Not in the same part of world, so I don't have access to the machines that
don't work.
Any process to help isolate what might be causing this?

The current 1.3.15 version msi support does not remove the uninstall registry
entry when a program is unistalled. This was fixed recently but is now broken
again. When a progam is installed with a Microsoft .msi, an entry is placed
in:
hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\uninstall
If this entry is not removed, the program cannot be installed again. This
requires a user to manually remove the registry entry.

running wine-1.3.15 on ubuntu maverick (uname 2.6.35-24-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP

without the videos (had to rename the video folder so the game doesn't show
error dialogs for each).
but in bloodrayne 2, I have no videos (again), and no textures.
e.g. first level: black window, a few red curtains/whatever, and a few white
stars or flames (i think flames from these candles) on the floor. can't see
Rayne, can't see enemies, but blade effects and blood. and as said, everything
that's not a particle effect or animated cloth is just black. fonts also don't
show up, but the menu borders show.
oh and stdout repeats following message about every second:

I'm not sure I can describe this correctly.
I've got a few registry keys that contain Japanese signs (in values).
Regedit can't export those keys correctly, when I run
in my own locale (pl_PL.UTF-8). They also fail to be displayed then.
(The key names are ASCII, the values are not).
But when I run as LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8, something strange happens,
while regkey can be exported (as CP932, which sucks a bit, IMHO),
it can't be viewed. The treeview of the key shows a plus beside it,
but the key values are not shown and clicking that plus doesn't expand
the subkey (in my standard locale, at least subkey got expanded).
(I'll just ignore for now the fact, that in my locale, if keyname
is Japanese, it's shown as question signs.)

I've no good idea how to solve this problem. The mouse goes wandering all over
the screen, and it's very easy to end up giving the focus away.
The problem only arises, I guess, when the application thinks it's full screen
but is being run in a virtual desktop. Is there some way for the application
to gain exclusive capture of mouse events so that mouse clicks don't get sent
to other applications? Of course, this would mean that it's *impossible* to
click away from the application, you'd have to use a desktop manager key
binding (eg Alt-Tab).

Is it possible for this patch to be modified so that the mouse is warped back
into the application window, at least when the application thinks it's running
full screen?
If you run a program with this patch which relies on the current behaviour in a
virtual desktop which doesn't cover the entire Linux desktop then while the
cursor is outside the application window mouse key presses are being sent to
outside windows or the desktop. This can end up triggering all sorts of
accidents if you're not paying attention!

Hello folks.
Lets transfer talks on the hacky patch to the AppDB. This is bugreport and
only technical details _related to the bug directly_ are interesting here.
So please stop talking about workarounds.
There are only 20 usefull comments (at most) in this report. Please keep the
noise lower :)
Thank you :)
Now the tech-details.
Vincent Povirk and Jesse Allen have investigated on the bug. Jesse has made a
standalone and interactive test-case:
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4009#c27
It would be nice to transform it into autonomous WRT block. Though I am not
sure about the way to read and interpret the resulting image (to make
difference between bug and normal case).

Summary: GetClipboardFormatName() / RegisterWindowsMessage():
thoroughly incompatible implementation
Product: Wine
Version: 1.3.14
Platform: x86
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: user32
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: andi(a)rhlx01.fht-esslingen.de
GetClipboardFormatName() / RegisterWindowsMessage() and related APIs are said
to map to identical functions (RVAs) in Windows.
In Wine, we have individual USER drivers (winex11.drv etc),
and they do their _own_ (even non-ATOM) clipboard format handling.
And RegisterWindowsMessage() uses GlobalAddAtom() which is said to be WRONG,
too.
"Registered Window Message String",
http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/30695961/registered-window-messa…
clarifies it: both APIs are _identical_, and they make use of
_another_ _internal_ ATOM table. I.e., there's the application-global
(NULL HINSTANCE?) atom table, application-local (per-HINSTANCE?),
and this _system-internal_ table _common_ to both clipboard/messages.
Conclusion: incompatibilities abound (and that in a situation where Google
"RegisterWindowMessage GetClipboardFormatName" shows 1850 results, IOW a very
widely known undocumented Windows behaviour).
If correcting the implementation is deemed less urgent, then perhaps it's
useful to add a corresponding comment at a prominent place, hinting at these
implementation specifics (should probably reference this bug#).
HTH,
Andreas

This is still an issue with Diablo 1 and wine 1.3.15
Using the Worms World Party fix for wine 1.2 (2.90 KB, patch) and the wine
source od 1.2.2 does fix it but you have to change the stuff manualy cause
because of version mismatch patch does not work.
The patch does not work on recent wine source (1.3.15)

Hi all :-)
About Chen Minqiang comments :
1) the DIB engine won't be accepted, in particular if embedded in winex11.drv.
This has already been discussed thousands of times.
2) Embedding it in winex11.drv would mean to rebase it on EVERY wine change;
summed with point 1 would mean an huge work for the maintainer, and I don't
have time anymore for it.
3) About the bugs : last time I tested it, winedib.drv passed MORE tests than
original winex11 alone.
That said, the code is fully and extensively commented (even too much, on some
people's opinion...), so if you want to fix some bugs, you're wellcome.
As I said some time ago, I don't have much time anymore to fix them and, as it
would be never included in official wine, it's almost an useless task.
4) winedib code is NOT based on old source code; it's a "bridge" between gdi
and winex11 and, besides some very late changes, is up to date with wine
codebase; by design it will be so for long time, besides the need to rebase
configure.ac file from time to time.
That said, if somebody wants to take the task of rewriting it from scratch he's
*very* wellcome :-)
Ciao
Max

Hi Chen,
Not criticisms, just questions to be sure we don't miss the target :
- what about the MacOS X guys who do not have X11 installed ?
- what performances will it provide under Wayland (nearly compatible X11
replacement in future distros)
By the way, I am using neither of those yet.

City of Heroes no longer responds to mouse wheel input.
Steps to reproduce:
1) Log in to CoH.
2) Scroll the mousewheel up and down.
Expected result:
Camera zooms in and out.
Actual result:
Nothing happens.
This isn't restricted to camera zoom, it's just the easiest way to test it.
Other uses of the mousewheel (eg. scrolling through lists) are also broken.
This is a regression from WINE 1.3.14.

Hi, Max
I have an idea, we can write the dib operations in to the "winex11.drv" module
instead of writing a new "winedib.drv" module.
and we can set a switch that the winex11.drv module choose to use the default
operations or the dib operations. I think this should be accepted by the wine
repos.

i run many games on wine, such as:
Counter-Strike 1.6(on Steam)
Age of Empires III
Soldat
Commandos3
War3(Warcraft III, Frozen Throne)
DeusEx(DeusEx: Goty)
after a great tests with Max's DIB Engine patch, I find several bugs:
--The fonts in game display really bad on many games
--The mouse disappear in some case(when i select a settler and point the mouse
to other objects like tree, TC, animal) on running AOE3 game
--The output on terminal shows this many times:
err:dibdrv:_BITMAPLIST_Terminate Unfreed DIB found, handle is 0x3a4
err:dibdrv:_BITMAPLIST_Terminate Unfreed DIB found, handle is 0x378
I think somebody should rewrite the dib engine, i mean a totally rewrite,
because the dib engine code is base on the old wine source, but the current
wine source is really up to date with many bugs fixed
as i can see, the games above run well on the original wine without DIB Engine
except for slowness in some case.
anyway, the DIB Engine really increase the the performance on some games. thx
Max.

Since most people looking at this particular bug are likely interested in
actually playing King's Quest VI:
KQ6 is perfectly playable in ScummVM, which is multiplatform.

Summary: install fails - msi_cabextract FDICopy fails

Version: 1.1.10

ReportedBy: john.solomon(a)indysoft.com
First, forgive me, I am a noooooob in every sense of the word.I have not used
any linux or distro before. I have just started using Ubuntu 8.04 in an
experiment to run two apps. that I use often. One is an Firebird db for asset
management (work) and the other is a Cad/Cam program (play). It took a while
but I got the Firebird to run in wine (1.1.10). I am having issues with the cad
program called eCabinets. The mfg for the program does not support their
software outside of windows 2000 or XP. The install is interupted before it
finishes (when copying files). It sounds like the issue reported for
Office2003, Quickbook, COD and a few others. your case ids 15887, 15642 and
11719
err:msi:msi_cabextract FDICopy failed
err:msi:ACTION_InstallFiles Failed to extract cabinet: L"Data1.cab"
err:msi:ITERATE_Actions Execution halted, action L"InstallFinalize" returned
1627
err:msi:ITERATE_Actions Execution halted, action L"ExecuteAction" returned 1627
the full log is attached
The program uses DAO, jet40 for its access databases. I used wine-doors to get
DAO, Jet and a few others that sound like they might be needed like windows
common controls, XP library, runtime libs
I have done so much trying to get this solve short of rollbacks and unistalls,
I am doing circles
If there is anything else I can tell you, please let me know. But please dumb
down your questions for noooobs and dont be suprised if I ask stupid questions.
btw... Ubunto and wine..... rocks..... can you say bye bye Bill Gates?

wine wine64-preloader winecfg winedbg winefile winemine
wine64 wineboot wineconsole winedump winemaker winepath
"wine" is a virtual link to wine64 that I had to create manually.
I'm running Fedora Core 14 on an AMD 64 single core.
uname -a:
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Dec 23 16:04:50
UTC 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Description of what I did:
===========================================================================
I grabbed wine 1.3.14-2.fc14.x86_64 from the yum repositories last night & this
morning (5AM downtime stopped me mid-download on one).
I grabbed the following RPM's via yum:
nss-mdns-0.10-8.fc12.x86_64
wine-cms-1.3.14-2.fc14.x86_64
wine-common-1.3.14-2.fc14.noarch.rpm
wine-core-1.3.14-2.fc14.x86_64
wine-twain-1.3.14-2.fc14.x86_64
After yum installed these, I tried to run wine. Wine wasn't found, so I
created the link "wine" pointing to wine64.
Now I tried running winecfg from an xterm. The error message I got back was:
"wine: could not exec wineserver". Evidently, the file is missing from the
x86_64 rpms. Please include it.
There were no other messages output from the terminal.

Paul:
There is a mail list for Fedora 13. Please use it or the Wine Users Mailing
list to ask for assistance installing/removing/purging Wine. This does not
appear to have anything to do with the current bug report.
Also, PLEASE DO NOT RUN WINE AS ROOT. Wine will NOT install Gecko as root,
either.
Thank you.

Missing wineboot is a bad sign.
Most likely your Wine installation is missing important packages, make
sure you have installed all main Wine package dependencies.

Summary: WSAStartup() is not required to do networking
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.49.
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P1
Component: winsock
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: mark(a)ookoo.org
On Windows (tested at least on Xp, and this is also according to MSDN doc),
when calling any network function, you absolutely have to call WSAStartup()
before.
If you didn't call WSAStartup(), any ws2_32 function will fail, with error
WSANOTINITIALISED (10093).
I'm writing cross-compilable programs on linux that should also run on Win32,
and I do all my tests on wine.
It took me a while to find out why people trying to use this program on real
windows boxes had troubles accessing network.
The expected behaviour for Winsock2 functions is to fail, unless WSAStartup()
was called. For each time you call WSAStartup(), you have to call WSACleanup()
once.

The current download link is a 404. I think the version 1.6 is no longer
available. The current version is 2.4.8.0.
That version crashes in gecko/mshtml code as of current Git. It seems to work
and render correctly if I install ie6.
I've gone back as far as Wine 1.1.11, and that behavior is the same. So I think
this is a new bug in the new version of the program. As such, I will file a new
bug for that.
If Google Translate isn't fooling me, the current download page says the
program is free to redistribute, so if someone still has the old version (and
the old version was licensed in the same way), perhaps you could upload that
version so we don't lose this bug?

AFAIK one of the current patches should have failed. At least the patch that
addes a directive to configure.ac for adding the winedib.drv directory to the
list of directories inside which to create a Makefile did for me.
See if dlls/winedib.drv contains a Makefile. If not then add
WINE_CONFIG_DLL(winedib.drv)
around line 2812 in configure.ac and rerun autoconf and make.

I tried the same thing. I'm running ubuntu 10.10 64bit. i compiled my patched
wine 1.3.7 in a 32bit ubuntu vmware box and then copied it to host. It runs
fine and the DIB engine seems to be working. I tried running regedit or winecfg
with WINEDIB=ON and i get typical "err:dibdrv:" errors which i presume means
that the DIB engine is working. Fl studio 9 demo works just fine with
WINEDIB=ON but i see no changes in performance, the gui still slows to a crawl
if i open the piano roll.
Strangely, i don't get any DIB related errors while running FL studio.
