There are programs that need the MFC.dll series and copying from windows
installation won't work even if they are the same.
If we work better with notepad.exe and regedit.exe implemented, shy wouldn't we
implement also some other libraries? If wine had strictly APIs will be
unusable. How many programs and libraries to implement as open source? Well,
from my point of view in depends on how much progress in the development are we
achieving.
I think religious or ethical issues like not developing libraries for a
program that read the bible or another that generates keys or another that
decompiles software, is a seatback in wine development. If not developing them,
I think it should obbey to other reasons.
I have an example 19KB program written in Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 and needs
the following libraries (see attachment for details).

Warcraft world editor having a new bug recently in wine version 1.1.32 The bug
was here in older version but, now, the bug is bigger. The mouse is not fix to
image now by up and right, before, the image was only not fixed in by the up. I
analyse this and I see it is the eight of image was not adjustable. when you
maximise window, all 2/3 of image is not line up with screen. When I
unmaximize, the window can be adjustable, and I can stretch it at the
resolution of world editor, but, the window is small and you don't see
correctly. I think if the resolution of world editor is adjustable, the bug
will be fixed

StarCraft II ran smoothly in wine. A couple of days ago, two parameters
changed:
- I updated OpenSuse from 11.2 to 11.3.
- StarCraft II Patch 17 came out.
Now SC2 is very unstable. The following happens when I launch StarCraft II
Beta:
1) About 70% of the time, SC2 would crash immediately and not draw its window.
2) About 15% of the time, SC2 would crash after a couple of seconds in main
menu.
3) About 10% of the time, SC2 would crash after matchmaking (search for
player... players found.. crash (before countdown starts)
4) About 5% of the time, SC2 would run smoothly, but about 10 minutes into the
game all graphics will be corrupted (the game itself continues to run and still
responds to user input). Every single object is split along the diagonal: the
bottom right half is black while the top left half is normal. This is true for
every unit, every icon, and worst of all for the whole screen.
Attached a log-file for case 3). Please tell me if you need more log-files.
Wine Version 1.2 + patch as described in the SC2 Howto:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=19376.
StarCraft II Patch 17
OpenSuse 11.3, error occurs on gnome and kde alike.

Summary: Silent Hill 2: messing up with pixels

ReportedBy: t0p0linik(a)yahoo.it
I attached the video clip showing ingame behaviour. The game is unplayable. I
simply started a new game just to show you the issue.
First of all, look at the fading effects: graphics gets wrong when starting
fading.
Let's start, skip the intro (it's bink video, this works ok) and look what
happens into the room: some walls move, some others don't, James leaves a
"shadow" made of pixels behind himself, this is disgusting.
Then, after finishing the intro ("Mary... could you really be in this town?") I
try to get out from that room: this isn't easy at all! At last, I get out
(again, the fading is corrupted).
Now, the worst: outside, soon the fog covers everything so what you can see is
just...fog! And the statements don't disappear, they just appear one above
another, while the fog makes the older ones fade.
Please, help!
Is this a wine issue? or is it a video driver issue?
Note that this doesn't happen when I run "native" games (such as
neverball/neverputt).

I still experience lags with in-game mouse pointer and really slow movements
especially in combat in stable 1.2. Probably that's because I have much weaker
hardware than you (notebook with 1-core AMD Turion 2.0 GHz + VIA Chrome9 video
card). But it's still tens times faster than a hardware needed to run Fallout
1/2 flawlessly on Windows.

Tested and confirmed working with Xorg 1.8.1.902 and latest wine git, using
Mass Effect 2 as the test case. I was actually just looking into this with the
intent to fix it. Guess you beat me to it :P Nice work in any case.
My only gripe with the patch is the profusion of magic numbers. I would
suggest using #define's to make the code more readable and more robust, but it
looks like that is not common practice in the wine code base. One other
thought is that it might be a good idea to translate the rest of the dinput API
implimentation to XInput2. It seems like there is already a pretty
straightforward 1:1 correspondence between a lot of the dinput functions and
XInput2 functions.
Just my 2 cents. Thanks for the patch, and keep up the good work. Now off to
play some ME2

This does appear to be fixed but for a different reason. Wine no longer appears
to create the situation where a device symlink (d::) is present but a drive
symlink (d:) is not. Winecfg will still choose d: for the new drive if d:: is
present and d: is not, but that situation will not occur naturally.

And even better, to not confuse read&write of a file, use
patch -p1 -i foo.patch

Maybe I made something wrong I patch the wine 1.2 final source as:
patch -p1 > madscientist-X11DRV_LeaveNotify.patch
It made 4-5 lines, so it was patched...
I tested in Thief-Deadly Shadows and America's Army 3, both has the same mouse
could not escape from the window so you could not turn around, this patch DID
NOT WORK.
Everybody can test it at least America's Army is totally free!

To make reproducing of the bug faster I changed the default map and placed
trees on second screen.
Without it you need a few minutes to reproduce the bug.
1. Unzip the attachment and replace file drive_c/Program Files/Dink
Smallwood/dink/Map.dat
2. Run dink.exe and press start
3. Wait a few second while Dink is taking with his mother
4. Get outside
Now you will see two trees (only right parts of them). They should have green
background, but it is black. Furthermore, Dink can get behind this black
background.

I get similar behaviours than you with wine 1.2. I think that the focus of this
bug should be changed; it is possible to start the game if you mess up with the
.ini configuration file. But it is not possible to start the game with
"vanilla" settings.

Well, I bought a copy of First Decade in hopes of network playing against my
brother, who owns his own copy.
So I install WINE for Ubuntu, and then the game itself. The installation went
off without a hitch.
Various bugs about the games:
C&C1:Menu boxes appear, then text appears and boxes flicker. Every time a menu
opens, and every time something is changed. Randomly locks up, unusable. Also,
cursor flickers
Red Alert: Same as above.
Tiberian Sun: Cannot run, as it says "A Debugger has been detected"/"Unload the
debugger and try again."
Renegade: No known problems

I like to automate wine in various places, however the new crash dialog is
making this difficult as I have to make a script to manually set the registry
key for disabling it whenever something might crash but the script can
continue.
This is especially awkward for scripts that work with an existing Wine
installation, as then I have to worry about preserving the registry key or
resetting it afterwards.
Thank you!

I was thinking about this bug and came up with two solutions.
One, we could utilize a modified version of libmesa to handle creating vertex
shaders.
Second, probably better is the following psuedocode to multiplex the hardware
capability to produce vertex shaders:
If vertex shaders necessary are under number of supported do not multiplex, and
use full hardware.
Else multiplexing is neccessary routine as follows:
Load all shaders into virtual driver.
Whenever shaders change do as follows or are given modifications do the
following loop.
|----------|
Load supported number of vertex shaders from buffer into video memory.
Do any hardware based modifications necessary while loaded in video driver
Copy image of loaded vertex shaders into pixel-based shaders.
Unload and save vertex shaders into storage.
Keep the pixel-based shaders in video driver buffer for use instead of vertex
shaders.
repeat loop until all modifications are processed.
|----------|
The quality of the produced images should be based on the stored OpenGL
settings. If such a routine is not stored, it should use texture settings used
for other pixel shaders on the program.
When rendering of those vertex shaders is called for, simply translate the
calls to use the pixel shader renderings of the vertex shaders.
This is probably the fastest, and most efficient method I can think of, as it
doesn't have to reload the vertex shaders unless they are changed.
If someone has the skill to translate this pseudo-code onto an actual
programming language for a patch, it would be appreciated.

Has anyone run a trace on what sections of the Win32 subsystem it's trying to
scan for emulation?
Several things can be checked for emulation.
What I've noticed in logs is attempts to directly access the drive through I/O.
This would be my number one suspect without even seeing that. It's only a
logical course of action to directly access the drive in manners that would be
near impossible to emulate to check if it's real.
Pass through access to the drive is possible in VirtualBox, which can directly
pass I/O to a drive. It's virtual drive fails virtual drive tests, and it's
physical pass-through passes them. It's a perfect example of how it should be
done.
Since Wine doesn't even do any real emulation, this should be even easier on
it. If we can get someone with knowledge in that field to write a patch to do
so, it would be nice.
I don't know about other systems, but Linux systems grant direct I/O to the
CD/DVD drive systems using the group system. The "wine" group should be
configured to have access to these groups, if it doesn't already. It then
needs the proper routines to forward those I/O requests when sent to the
various Wine drivers that handle them in Win32.

two database repaint error
Hi All,
With Lotus Approach, when you have two databases open inside (one) Approach
(not reproducible with only one) and you focus another running Linux program
(like Firefox) on top of Approach, then you pull Approach back into focus (the
foreground), the database page does not repaint. If you mouse click where the
fields are suppose to be, you will get that field back.
Workaround: grab the lower right corner and re-size the windows as small as you
can get it, then re-size it back.
What a pain in the neck!
Many thanks,

The hack to make Army men work
This is a simple hack which will return the default system palette when calling
GetSystemPaletteEntries. It should have been done better (modifying the DC
function), but for now, this will probably suffice.

I have modified GetSystemPaletteEntries to return the standard 20 color Windows
palette entries every time. The results I have seen are astonishing. The
problem was that GetSystemPaletteEntries was returning the all (0,0,0) palette
entries and Army Men was passing those palette entries to DirectDraw
CreatePalette. The hack by Pavel Prochazka worked because the palette entries
were passed by reference, hence the function CreatePalette modified something
outside. If you try to copy the palette entries inside DirectDraw
CreatePalette, and modify the copy, you will see a black screen again.

The default layout can be specified in resources in various way, and it's in
general inherited by child windows.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/goglobal/bb688119.aspx is a good overview
(though of course we'll need test cases to confirm this).

I can agree on the MENU's. I did see some strange things with respect to
DIALOG's though.
We need tests on Windows of course (with a lot of variables) to see when
Windows 'decides' to go RTL and if this also is inherited by DIALOG's or child
windows (and their MENU's). It's a good thing Ge installed an Arabic testbot ;)

True, you don't want to change the menu styles. Basically the whole coordinate
system needs to be reversed for a window with an RTL layout, even bitmaps get
flipped around.

I might be wrong cause I don't know i18n stuff so well, but it seems to me that
adjusting resources is a wrong way cause an RTL look should be derived from
locale somehow, maybe including default RTL style for windows etc. Anyway items
should be properly arranged too - leftmost in LTR will be rightmost in RTL
which isn't a case with this patch I guess. This flag is about to place item in
a opposite side of a normal item start position, like some apps do for Help
item, right?

Right justify the menu
The attached patch shows that it's possible to rightjustify the menu's. The
menu items however should also be placed right to left (which Wine doesn't do
yet). The patch can't go in as such as I needed to change the MENU to MENUEX.
Going to the EX-versions should probably be done for all resources but is
definitely post 1.2.

I'm running Mac OS X and thanks to the wonderful work of doh123 (Wineskin
developer) Mac OS X users can now easily patch wine source using Terminal...I'm
trying to use the Xi2 patch but I am unsure as to why I cannot successfully
complete the build. What is the optimal wine source for the Xi2 patch? It shows
as unspecified at the top of the page...It just hasn't worked for me (although
I have patched source for, and played the STALKER series without any issues
using the "dlls/dinput/mouse.c patch). I've also broken down the patch and
created separate patches for every diff that is included in the new Xi2
patch...creating 10 different patches...all except 2 of the diffs give me a
successful message except the "dlls/winex11.drv/winex11.drv.spec" and the
"dlls/winex11.drv/x11drv_main.c" diffs which gives me an error message of a
malformed line. Can anyone offer me insight on this or perhaps tell me what
source this patch was written for?

Summary: do not scan all font metrics on application startup
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: x86

Severity: normal

Component: gdi32
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: jstpierre(a)mecheye.net
With a good set of fonts, about 800-1200 families, wine is not very good at
starting up fast, and it doesn't even respond to signals. The only way I've
found to kill it is with a wineserver -k.
I was told that wine currently scans font metrics on each application startup.
I feel that this could be improved, either by scanning the information needed
from the font file lazily or once, on wineserver start.
Approximate time, it takes around 3-4 minutes for a cold start of winecfg
before effects are visible.

and the loading screen is proper, but then the display is incomplete, both in
the menu and in the game: only part of the interface is displayed well, no
background and images in menu, no objects in game. It is absolutely unplayable.
I'm using Debian unstable on i386, with a Mobility Radeon X300 and the Free

backbuffer/fbo didn't help).
As can be seen in the log, the problem seems related to:
fixme:d3d:state_wrap (WINED3DRS_WRAP0) Texture wrapping not yet supported
which is supposed to have been fixed in #8176 (but opening a new report as
requested).

Streets of Moscow (a car racing game) doesn't accept any keyboard or mouse
input after starting, thus it's unplayable. The issue exists both in fullscreen
and virtual desktop mode.
So far I've tried the following but none of them worked:
- setting the win version to W2k
- the XI2_input patch from bug #6971 (my X.Org version is 1.8.2)
- the patch from bug #8854
- the rawinput3 patch from bug #10318 > the game crashed on startup in
RegisterRawInputDevices()
- installing native dinput/dinput8.dlls
Unfortunately, no demo is available.

Since the last two, maybe three RCs, NewsLeecher uses a lot of CPU when it
starts and sits idle. No matter what you do, it keeps using one core
completely. This wasn't the case with rc1 and rc2 for sure (and before).
Sending NL to tray reduces CPU to a better level, but still above normal.
Average use on my 2.8 GHz AMD dual core:
Tray: ~20%
Normal: ~40%-80%, changing every second or so (up/down)
Due to this 'abuse', the GUI updates are very slowly, repaints are clearly
visible and scrolling is very slow because of that.

Yes, you are completely right. I had abandoned this for a while, promising to
return to it later. I remember using hw breakpoints to see if anything gets
copied to the surface memory, and indeed, zeros were copied all the time so I
dismissed it as no copying. This might prove the fact that all rendering is
done through GetDC and ReleaseDC which in fact call Lock and Unlock and do the
translation themselves, hence, we get 24-bit RGB (0,0,0) = 0. Maybe this
palette gets input as a result of another function call and game logic. I was
planning to make a proxy ddraw.dll on windows and trace the calls to ddraw to
get more insight. Can you please provide me with that article?
It's possible to obtain the correct default palette from windows and use it in
wine. One more thing that might prove this is an odd result while playing Air
Tactics on Windows XP. Sometimes, the screen turns into a color noise (probably
as a result of a palette change). If we can fix this on Wine, we might provide
a ddraw.dll that will make the game (and similar games to it) runnable once
more on Windows.

The "bug" is mouse won't move at the same speed when you have selected one
overlord, and only one overlord.
When you have anything else selected, game will have a "normal" speed.
Steps to reproduce :
1/ update your registries as described :
* Use the key "DirectDrawRenderer" and add that to your registry
* with the value "opengl"; you may also need to add the key
* "RenderTargetLockMode" with the value "readtex".
2/ Launch single game "play custom" and choose zerg for you.
3/ select overlord
4/ move mouse
If you do "F10" to make menu appear, the mouse will still be slow !
Workaround : remove "Direct3D" from registry (Local user\Software\Wine)

Armymen menu - with faked palette
I had created a simple faked palette just in CreatePalette, so I recieved some
usable pictures. I had stepped through army men initialization process and i
had discovered that this program gives a pretty odd palette to CreatePalette
call - 256-times R:0 G:0 B:0. Maybe Armymen relies on a default palette, maybe
not. Once more interesting article i found is that army men does all the
rendering through GetDC and ReleaseDC, so the palette is not probably needed.
Then the problem is in X11DRV_DIB_MapColor, because the search for acceptable
color fails and the function returns zero index - allways black color. This is
probably more general problem with translating colors between palette and DC.

When i start Max Payne my Laptop (Thinkpad T400) will overheat after a few
minutes of play. I think it is a bug in the directx 3d function. It simply
computes and calculates too much for my GPU (Radeon HD 3400)
I used minimum detail.
Why do i consider this as a bug:
- Max Payne is very old and should run without causing overheating because of
computing in cpu/gpu
- Ravenshield who is the same gamesetting runs fine.
- Modern games like Borderlands who need more GPU features/time run fine
without overheating.
As i dont know how to fix this issue i need help tracking it down to the code
lines who are causing it.
What is the next step ?

I am not a Linux expert. I developped Software with Delphi 5 under Linux:
www.KLSoft.de --> Download
Here are some problems with all wine versions under Linux (Ubuntu / Suse):
1. Fonts:
"Times New Roman" is missing or too large (Scrollbars in exercise Windows)
"Symbol" Font is missing
2. Richtext
Richtext isn't shown properly (run one of my demos, use the Linux konsole, so
that getdir finds the path to the rtf-Documents):
Symbol characters are missing, in some cases scrolling a page or clicking on
the text changes the textlayout (chaotic letterorder), clicking on a picture or
formular crashes the emulator
(I use a richview component in Delphi 5 to show the richtext file)
3. richedit
In a richedit Component in Delphi 5 the property wordwrap= false isn't
supported, seltext/selattributes (in order to uses two fonts (Times New Roman
/Symbol) don't behave like under Windows:
"Sqrt"2 :Ö2 ("Sqrt" Ö in Symbol characterset)
4. Windows
The property "showmodal" which shows a Window in front of the screen and the
user must close the window before he can switch to another one doesn't work:
The Window is shown in front (Exercise window (Übung 1)) but can be clicked in
the back by clicking on another Window (on the background) then it is very
difficult to close a hidden window.

Also - missing winemp3.acm category for the bug, so assigning to msacm32.
*/
Up to wine 1.1.28 the game works normally, however, testing the newer two
versions (1.1.29 and 1.1.30) produces the following:
1. Incredible game slowdown (like a slideshow). The game slows down to the
point that it takes several attempts to register a key press.
2. Loss of background music (though ambient sounds come through) using ALSA
output (same as the issue noted on the post below)
Using OSS output I get no sound, but the game is at normal speed. Using OSS and
launching the game with "padsp wine" results in ambient sounds returning, but
the slowdown is back. No setting I've tried so far has resulted in restoring
the background music.
Under wine 1.1.28 sound works (ALSA) and the game runs at full speed.
Workaround:
Take winemp3.acm.so from /usr/lib/wine on a 1.1.28 install, and put it in
/usr/lib/wine on a 1.1.29 install.

This problem seams pressent in the 1.1.2* versions of Wine
1.1.18 is not a problem. Latest tested 1.1.27 where the crashes still remains.
In 1.1.18 and earlyer, pets wont move, doors dont show as open when you open
them. This for the first few minutes everytime I start the game.
In 1.1.18 and earlyer this just corrects itself afer a few minutes and after
that works fine for that session.
But in the later versions of wine when it used to correct itself the game
insted crashes with a errormessage from Wine saying it might be a bug in wine.
I hope this will give some hint to where the problem can be.

Hello,
--- quote ---
What's the simplest way to create a test case for this behaviour? Creating a
not
visible overlapped, and then a visible popup windows work same way under Wine
as they do under Windows (i.e. GetFocus() and GetActiveWindow() return same
active and focus windows). Are there any SetWindowPos, SetParent, ShowWindow
that required to replicate the bug?
--- quote ---
Well, it's a deviation of the tabstop+focus
assignment issue explained in bug 19052
(http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19052#c8)
GetNextDlgTabItem() is still most likely the cause.
More (undocumented?) corner cases need to be handled.
The window hierarchy for the case here (using "PhotoStitch 3.1"):
---
(1) top level (main app window)
Title=PhotoStitch
Parent=Topmost
Style=0x4CF0000
(WS_OVERLAPPED|WS_MINIMIZEBOX|WS_MAXIMIZEBOX|WS_CLIPSIBLINGS|WS_SYSMENU|WS_THICKFRAME|WS_CAPTION)
ExtStyle=0x300 (WS_EX_WINDOWEDGE|WS_EX_CLIENTEDGE)
Class=Afx:400000:b:2020c:6:30238
(2) dialog control bar
Parent=(1)
Style=0x40000040 (DS_SETFONT|WS_CHILD)
Class=#32770
(3) OLE drop target window?
Parent=(2)
Style=0x50000000 (WS_CHILD|WS_VISIBLE)
Class=Afx:400000:b
(4) dialog control bar
Parent=(2)
Style=0x40000040 (DS_SETFONT|WS_CHILD)
Class=#32770
---
Both dialog control bars (2) and (4) are constructed using
CreateDialogIndirectParamA(), WM_INITDIALOG is sent twice (nested creation).
After creation of child dialog control bar the active window/input focus is
still NULL.
Because dialog control bar (4) contains no child control at this point, no
tabstop search is performed hence the approach from bug 19052 won't work here
(use first child if no suitable control with tabstop property is found).
I returned the dialog control HWND from DIALOG_GetNextTabItem() to have at
least a control to set focus on.
It helped "PhotoStitch 3.1" from comment #1 and "WYSIWYG Web Builder 5" from
comment #18 to successfully start.
I could not find a download for bug 18880 ("unable to run program GAUSS", dupe)
to test with.
Bug 13542 "Army Builder 3.1" is still a not fixed by both, needs further
investigation.

Summary: TF2 throws pixel shader 1.1 error when started with

If I start TF2 with the option -dxlevel 9, the splash screen renders, and then
the game closes and an error message that says something like "Your graphics
hardware must support pixel shader 1.1 to play this game!" occurs.
It works completely fine with -dxlevel 81.
I've had this error for years, but I've been hearing more and more people talk
about playing with dxlevel 9 recently, claiming it runs great or even better
than dxlevel 81.
I have tried a new prefix, a new Steam directory, running inside and outside my
32-bit chroot, and none of these things have changed anything.
I am running ArchLinux with kernel 2.6.34, nvidia 256.35, GeForce GTX 285, but
as I said, I've had this trouble for years, even when using different nvidia
cards (previously had a 7900GTO). Through all the WINE updates, everything,
this has stayed constant. I'm currently running a version from git compiled
yesterday.
I'll attach a couple of snippets from a Steam run for your examination. Thanks
for looking, and thanks to everyone in IRC who helped, especially kevlarman.

Summary: Mouse pointer position problem with full-screen game
Product: Wine

OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED

ReportedBy: markk(a)clara.co.uk
This bug applies to PacQuest 3D, which is downloadable from
http://www.flyordie.com/games/download/pacquest.html
The game uses full-screen mode, 800x600 resolution by default. Mouse pointer
movement is limited based on where the pointer was on the X desktop when the
program was run.
To demonstrate, download and install the game. Position the mouse pointer near
the bottom right of the X desktop (i.e. move your terminal window there) then
run the game. The game's mouse pointer is at the centre of the screen, but if
you move the mouse right and down, the pointer does not move much. That would
correspond to the X desktop pointer reaching the edge of the screen. Move the
mouse left and up until the pointer is at the top left of the screen, and
continue moving the mouse left and up. After doing that you can move the
pointer all over the screen.

hack for battle.net menus
The attached patch is a hack that fixes the problem (at least for me).
As stated in comment #129 the controls in battle.net menus are painted directly
to the screen by locking the primary ddraw surface. In wine's implementation
the primary surface ends up hidden under battle.net windows (see comment #111).
This hack blits from the primary surface to the foreground window every time
the primary surface gets updated. This is obviously very slow but does the
trick.
Please note that this is not a fix, it's only an ugly workaround made
specifically for this wonderful game. I've tested the patch on wine 1.0.1
(debian testing) and wine 1.2rc6, is there anyone willing to test it further?

Spectrum Lab (free download from

app displayes the "The program SpecLab.exe encountered a serious error and
needs to close..." window.
This issue is present in all versions of spectrum lab i've tried (this time

is 2.6.33.2 (used many different kernels), the system is Debian lenny x86_64.
Now i have wine 1.1.42 installed, but the bug was present in other 1.1.x
versions tried (x=40-42, and a few versions around 20-30), and in the
distribution package 1.0.1
I think that the problem is with running wine on x86_64 linux, i have another
laptop with slackware 11.0 and wine 1.0.1 and this problem is not present. When
reproducing the problem please set the windows version in winecfg to "windows

so: "break __do_global_dtors" cannot find the symbol.
I tried to debug winedbg/dbghelp.dll a bit to find the problem and found some
hints (i am not sure if all of it is correct):
1) Module_get_container() does not return the correct module. It returns
"/lib/libc" as the container for "test.exe". This does not seem right.
If i hack myself around this i get to:
2) It would seem that winedbg/debughlp.dll only loads "export" symbols? As the
EXE has no exports then no symbols are found.... is this right? What about all
of the other symbols?
Furthermore, if i force the debugger to break at the correct place, the
debugger seems to show the wrong disassembly. Not sure if that is the same bug
or a different one.

avoids silly error messages
In dlls/wined3d/directx.c there is a function called
IWineD3DImpl_IsPixelFormatCompatibleWithRenderFmt which tries to compute if a
certain WINED3DFORMAT is compatible with a certain WineD3D_PixelFormat.
The function has separate paths for WGL_TYPE_RGBA_ARB (integer) and
WGL_TYPE_RGBA_FLOAT_ARB (float) WineD3D_PixelFormats. The float path explicitly
tests several WINED3DFORMATs, which seems OK. The integer part, however, tries
getColorBits() on the WINED3DFORMAT and prints an error if it doesn't get a
"correct" answer.
However, getColorBits() always throws an error for float formats, thus when
comparing an integer WineD3D_PixelFormat with a float WINED3DFORMAT the
function always outputs two errors instead of just saying "no".
The attached patch checks if the format is one where getColorBits works and
avoids spewing the error messages is that case. This duplicates the check in
getColorBits, so it's a bit of a hack, but a correct fix would need adding a
few more functions, so someone more experienced should do it. The patch is
against 1.1.8.
Fallout3 in particular is plagued by this problem: at every start-up wine spews
out errors for half a minute.

going to a dialog, any checkbox is drawn as a button. This is not a critical
bug because the buttons still act like checkboxs and are functional, but it
would be nice to have this fixed. See screenshot of what I mean.
Also, you will notice that the button text is pink. Don't know if that's
related or belongs in another bug tracker.

Summary: Notation Composer: crashes when opening menus
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.58.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown

Backtrace
I am trying to run the demo version of Notation Composer 2.3.3 (a midi notation
program). It starts just fine, but crashes when I start opening menus like
File, Help, and so on. If I use the menus sparingly, I am able to open a midi
file and use some of the basic program functions, like playing the file or
editing the score (although my toolbar lacks icons and playback bogs the
program down... topics for separate bug reports, probably, but perhaps that
info will be useful here).
The demo can be downloaded here:
http://notation.com/download/NotationComposer233TrialSmallSetup.exe
Note that I had to use winetricks and download the vcrun6 package, since the
install program requires mfc42.dll. Without it, the trial period expires upon
the first run.
Here are some details about my setup:
Wine version: 0.9.58
Windows version: XP
Distro: Slackware(-current)
Kernel version: 2.6.24.3-smp
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
GCC version: 4.2.3
glibc version: 2.7
xorg-server version: 1.4.0.90
Video card, driver version: NVidia GeForce 8600GT, 169.12
Notable configure opts: --with-x, --enable-opengl
I ran the program with:
$ wine "C:\Program Files\Notation\Composer\Composer.exe" > backtrace.txt 2>&1
To recreate the problem: get mfc42.dll (with winetricks vcrun6; thx Dan),
install the program, and start opening menus. The faster they are opened, the
sooner the program crashes.
A debug log is available, if needed. The page fault occurs at about 1500 lines
from the bottom, so let me know how many lines you need.
Thanks!
