Nonetheless, the shortcut in Windows states:

Attached the .lnk although it's not a plain-text file.

Currently Wine lacks support for Animated cursors meaning that in games that
use them you either have no mouse at all or just the basic X mouse (which in
itself is a bug so eventually until this is fixed these games will lack a
cursor entirely).
Some examples of games are Battlefield 2, Act of War, Command & Conquer
Generals, etc. Ranked "Major" because it affects quite a few applications.

think the only thing that pshaders affect in Morrowind are the water plane).
Looks like some sort of z-buffer issue. Gonna attach screenshots.
Using TSE3: Morrowind version 1.2.0722.
The issues are no there if pshaders are switched off. Everything tested in
Seyda Neen so if you have to start a new game you don't have to travel far to
see this bug :)
Adding Stefan Dösinger since he is also CCed in this bug:

And #10120 also has to do with the water plane, so maybe both are somehow
connected...?!

W98SE executes both WAVE and MIDI callbacks from the same thread as seen from
WineTestBot job #938.
https://winetestbot.geldorp.nl/JobDetails.pl?Key=938&log_201=1#k201
So this thread is either an OS-wide callback dispatcher, or a per-app callback
dispatcher, but not the app's nor the main winmm thread if such exists (since
SuspendThread is said in comment #18 to not make it hang) -- or something else
entirely.

When playing Torchlight game through Wine, some of the particle effects (mostly
fire) appear too big. The problem had been observed for the first time in Wine
1.1.31, as reported here:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=18314&iTesting…
I can also confirm that the problem is absent in Wine 1.0.1. There are
excessive particle effects whatsoever. I think it is needed to make regression
tests - unfortunately, I'm not a very advanced Linux user - I barely could
install 2 wine versions simultaneously to test.
Don't know if it might be relevant, but:
1) The bug is present in both D3D and OpenGL modes
2) I asked about in Runic Games' (official developer) Forum:
http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=11258
And it might seem that one of the devs has some clues about what might have
gotten wrong.

I instrumented the MIDI tests in the git tree to use callbacks (it's trivial to
do, the code is already there, just trace(GetCurrentProcessId)) and went for a
surprise.
Both w2k and XP execute all callbacks on the caller's thread! There a single
exception: midiStreamOut's MOM_DONE is called in the context of some other
thread.
This is especially surprising for MOM_POSITIONCB as one would assume that this
one is invoked asynchronously to the main application which is busy doing
something else. The only mechanism that comes to mind that would allow this is
QueueUserAPC, i.e. the asynchronous procedure call mechanism. OTOH it means
that if the app never calls Wait(), the APC never executes.
W98SE on WineTestBot executes all callbacks from a thread unique across all
tests (i.e. it's not started anew with every midiOpen), different from the
caller's. Is this a system-wide MIDI player thread or one solely dedicated to
executing user callbacks?
OTOH Wine executes MOM_OPEN and MOM_CLOSE on the caller's thread like w2k and
XP, but MOM_DONE and MOM_POSITIONCB from the player thread.

NPC's head flickering
Most (if not all) textures flicker.
This only happens in outside areas.
It also looks like a Z-fighting issue.
It can be best seen on NPCs (cf attached screen shot taken from JMS who first
reported the bug here: http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=3383).
Then gersen and Christian Beckhaeuser confirmed the bug in this thread.
The bug seems to require a motion to be seen as the flickering is constant on
NPCs (and also on me when in 3rd person view), but requires me to move or turn
my character in order to see it on still elements like doors, windows, trees,
ground...
On big elements, it can be best seen on texture intersections.
Note that the closer I am from a considered element, the less I see this bug:
when close to a NPC, only its articulations flicker, but from a further
distance, the whole head (or even arms, legs, armor...) flickers.
If it can help: I also noticed this bug on Cedega versions from 6.1.1 to 7.1.1
(current). However the bug disappear with Cedega 6.1.0. And the game simply
doesn't run with versions below 6.1.0.
This bug is *really* bothering, and I'm very well motivated to do anything
which could help fixing it.
My configuration: Wine 1.1.18, Ubuntu Intrepid 64, Morrowind GOTY 1.6.1820
(French), laptop Sager NP2096 / GPU NVidia 9600M GT 512Mo, drivers

It's seams wine doesn't edit the application.menu file to ensure the menu item
created are displayed. If for some reason you delete the menu item from a tool
like alacarte, you're not able to see those item never again.
Step to reproduce :
1. Install an application which create a link in the application menu. e.g.:
DVDFab6
2. Ensure the link is properly created.
3. Uninstall DVDFab6
4. The menu item is not remove by the uninstall opperation, so use 'alacarte'
to remove the item.
5. Reinstall DVDFab6
6. Notice the menu item doesn't appear in the menu or in alacarte.
Workarround :
To make it appear again, wine need to remove the <delete/> tag in the
application.menu othersiwe it's doesn't appear.

I know this is not a forum, but I just have to say this...
Yes, the only proper way to fix this bug is using XInput2, no doubt. But the
patch creating a new option "force-box" for MouseWarpOverride IS A PROPER
SOLUTION also. Why? Because wine already has a MouseWarpOverride option that is
there to go around some problems and it also breaks other applications. This
patch only creates a solution for other apps (and breaks some other). So it
should be part of wine main tree.
This issue should remain open until proper XInput2 is in wine, but "force-box"
option should be added to main branch also.

You must run autoconf after applying the patches, before running ./configure.
I should probably have restated that... it's mentioned somewhere in the
comments above.

@Darryl Pogue:
I just tried your patch and it doesn't seem to work - I mean wine 1.1.39
compiles Ok, but then trying to use DIB results in:
winecfg
err:driver:Load_Dib_Driver Couldn't load DIB Engine
err:driver:Load_Dib_Driver Couldn't load DIB Engine
err:driver:Load_Dib_Driver Couldn't load DIB Engine
err:driver:Load_Dib_Driver Couldn't load DIB Engine
any ideas why?
I compiled it like this:
1.Downloaded and extracted vanilla wine-1.1.39 and zip file you attached.
2.Then I applied patches like this:
patch -p1 <dib-engine-hook-the-engine-bet.patch
patch -p1 <dib-engine-initial-pass-throug.patch
patch -p1 <dib-engine-fork-ddb-dib-behavi.patch
patch -p1 <dib-engine-implement-most-engi.patch
patch -p1 <dib-engine-implement-alphablen.patch
patch -p1 <dib-engine-add-clipping-on-xxx.patch
patch -p1 <dib-engine-implement-polygon.patch
patch -p1 <dib-engine-fixes-clipping-text.patch
patch -p1 <dib-engine-fixes-against-wine-.patch
patch -p1 <dib-engine-introduction-of-bit.patch
patch -p1 <dib-engine-fix-mapmodes-for-xx.patch
patch -p1 <dib-engine-fix-color-in-antial.patch

3.Then: ./configure && make depend && make

This shows the error in the terminal when I run winecfg.
I am unable to launch any applications or winecfg. If I run them from the
menus, they simply do not run, and if I run from the terminal, I get an error
(see attached terminal output).
This bug is supposed to have been fixed in wine 0.9.41, however it does not
appear to have been, as I am still getting the same error as mentioned in bugs
7959 and 8470. I have also applied the patch by Huw Davies mentioned in bug
7959, however whenever I patch the code, I get an error stating "All four hunks
failed, saving all rejects to file dlls/winex11.drv/xrender.c.rej".
I would welcome any assistance in this matter,

I tried replicating this bug but had no problems with crashes or anything.
Though I did keep getting prompted by a little box that said "Operating System
Error!" and had a bunch of hexadecimals afterwards and I simply just clicked
"Ok" and it went away.
Replicated under Ubuntu Karmic Wine 1.1.39
I attached a log of the previous session.

DirectX 9.0c games and hardware are not current? When these are actually about
the 90% of the market? Oh my God...
Maybe in two years when everybody has (or most likely not) an GTS2x0 class card
it would be no longer an issue, but aside of what a ranking of a heavily
focused gamer platform says I still find a lot of people having and using
geforce 7x00 class cards or even lower models like 6x00, 5x00... because these
still are superb cards for doing lot of things and still very valid for gaming.
So, even being clearly aware of wine limitations, and praising even more wine
vitues (that are hundreds more than flaws), I think that this type of bugs
should be keep open at least until DirectX 10 is mainstream.

On launching Star Trek Armada 2 from the desktop icon I can get it to load and
run quite smoothly (with loss of drawing of front menu). At some point after
(after loading savefile, a few seconds after, a few minute after, not
predictable) it would crash X.
But on loading it from command line, the program does not start at all (and
thus does not start X), and a bug box pops up and the backtrace attached is
dumped.
I'm surprised how far into Linux this has got - to crash X is odd.

This is the standard .icd file from AoE2 Conquerers. I'm not entirely sure what
it's used for other than in launching the voobly client. Hence, this bug makes
it impossible to play online in a lobby. Attached is log. The game plays fine
with the a nocd exe, but once again that means no lobby support. :/

Ok, it seems the KMS problem is actually related to this:
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21515
It can be fixed by following those steps and/or patching wine according to the
discussion in bug 21515, but the drivers and kernel kms isn't quite to the
point of being ready.
Though the error that I am currently running into at least has a kernel patch
already. Perhaps kernel 2.6.34 will fix morrowind on open drivers!

The program has a console scanner (wvs_console.exe) which when run without
arguments displays some help in the console, but in Wine the output is missing
newlines which makes it nearly impossible to overview and use. The output is
nicely set-up (newlined) on Windows.
Note: program does not run without native msxml3 possibly due to bug

msxml3.

I'm cross compiling some software on a Linux build environment for a Windows
host. As part of that process I'd like to be able to run the test suite via
Wine.
As part of the build process, I populate a DLL directory with symlinks to all
the various DLLs required by the compiled executables. I thought that adding
this to the PATH environmant variable would cause Wine to find the DLLs, but
this is does not appear to be the case.
Here's an example:
$ ls -l dlls
-rwxr-xr-x 1 sam sam 266749 2010-02-20 14:20 libgcc_s_sjlj-1.dll
$ PATH=$PATH:dlls wine a.exe
err:module:import_dll Library libgcc_s_sjlj-1.dll (which is needed by
L"Z:\\tmp\\a.exe") not found
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"Z:\\tmp\\a.exe"
failed, status c0000135
So I'd like to request that an environment variable be added that contains
additional directories that will be added to the DLL search path.
Coping the DLLs into the build tree to run the tests is inconvenient because
there are test executables all over the build tree, and hacking the various
build systems to perform the copying, then removing the DLLs again would be
quite tricky.

I just tried installing only Word from MS Office Pro 2003 in Wine 1.1.39 on
Linux and got the same result: My selection was ignored, and all the Office
applications were installed instead.
What's worse, the workaround of running the installer again didn't work for me.
When I ran setup.exe directly for a second time, once again de-selecting all
Office apps except Word, the installer deleted a bunch of files and then
restored them, with the result being the same as before, i.e. a full Office
installation. Launching the installer via "Uninstall Wine Software", "Modify"
or "Remove" resulted in an error message from the installer ("aborted before
completion" or something like this, no further details given) and Excel (but
none of the other unwanted Office apps) having disappeared from Wine/Programs.
Well, that's a first step.

What is not mentioned at the time of this writing, however, is that attempting
to launch JK as a full-screen app causes Ubuntu to completely reboot. This
strikes me as a pretty serious issue.

winetricks vcrun6 and msxml4 didn't help.
The darn thing is a huge self-extracting installshield wrapper
around an .msi installer, which makes it harder.
And you can't just install the unpacked .msi, as it checks with a
VerifyScriptingRuntime custom action (?) to make sure you're not trying to
do that.
For what it's worth, an unattended install can probably be done with something
like

This is stdout/stderr from a crash run.
This is a regression, but I don't see where to mark it as such.
With Wine 1.1.38, in PAF (Personal Ancestral File) 5, bringing up the help
viewer causes a crash with an unhandled page fault at address zero (appears to
be a nullpointer access). Wine 1.1.37 and earlier did not have this problem.
Application installation was done by following the HOWTO on the AppDB page for
PAF 5. I used PAF5AllLangs.exe. During installation, I checked the box to
install the International Unicode Font. I also checked the box to _not_ view
the 'Getting Started' document during installation. Installation finishes,
apparently successfully.
The application did fine through all my usual short-version checks with a new
Wine version. It was only when I clicked on the yellow question mark to bring
up the help viewer (which uses Wine Gecko) that there was a problem. The crash
appears to happen the same whether I do 'New' to create a new empty file or use
an existing file. I have tried two different existing files with no change to
crash behavior. I tried bring up the help viewer before vs. after doing some
other things in the application with no change to crash behavior.
I will try to attach stdout/stderr from a crash. I'd love to be able to do a
regression run, but I just cannot afford the time.

In HTML-Kit build 292, some of the icons in the upper toolbar are missing.
(only when they can't be used?) They may reappear if switching to a different

different from bug 21356 since native comctl32 helps that issue, but not this
one.
Terminal output is from opening the program and choosing "create a new file".
(It's the same as the terminal output as for the aforementioned bug.) If it's
of any use, I've also attached an image comparing how Wine and Windows XP

Graphic Glitch Crash Terminal Output
See the attached document for the terminal output. It does not complete the
debug trace, even after letting it sit for over an hour.
My distribution is Kubuntu 9.04.
System specs:
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
1gb RAM
nVidia 6200 w/256mb RAM
Registry has been edited to tell wine that I have 256mb ram on video card. EVE
is installed in a clean prefix and native DirectX 9 is installed.
I'm working on doing screen caps to attach. Problem is, it crashes before I
can do this.
Dialing back to 1.1.24 fixes the problem. I will attempt to do regression
testing when/if I have time.

A log of Wine's output after the crash occurs.
I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 and Wine 1.1.10.
I installed the game from the CD, updated to the latest version (1.09), and the
game launches just fine. When it gets into the main menu I notice that it's
running a lot slower than it should be. I can start a single player game and it
still runs slow, and then crashes. It doesn't matter what I do in the game,
after about a minute it crashes. I can leave it at the main menu, or start a
game, or a tutorial or whatever, it crashes. It crashes strait to the desktop
without returning to the normal resolution (I run at 1024x768).
After it crashes, Wine starts acting very funny. None of the Wine applications
running will show up in the system tray like they're supposed to (I run
uTorrent). When I maximize uTorrent it only draws at a 800x600 resolution (the
resolution EU2 was running at), anything outside of that is squiggles. The only
way I know to fix this is to log out of Ubuntu and log back in.

I've noticed during the dark brotherhood quests when using backbuffer for
OffScreenRenderingMode that the game may crash when certain things are done.
Entering certain doors will always cause a crash, jumping into the water during
certain points of certain quests will also cause a crash. It's seems that
numerous things trigger this crash, but they all produce an almost identical
back trace. If anyone has trouble reproducing this bug, then I'll post
additional info / my hardware.

Talking with AJ on IRC, this is a WONTFIX. The application will crash the same

environmental variable in the registry to a different/smaller/null value).

Knowing what to look for, I found a trace where
A) midiOutUnprepare + HeapFree() is called from within the MOM_DONE function
callback.
I have a patch in my queue that supports this kind of useage.
B) midiStreamClose is called from the MOM_DONE callback.
This causes Wine to hang because it calls midiStreamRestart; ResumeThread;
midiStreamStop and waits for the STOP message to be returned. Alas, it's
already operating on the player thread, so it's waiting for itself...
This one looks like it's only going to ever work with a separate thread.
MSDN says "... as doing so can cause a deadlock"
Indeed, yet apps do this (or did this at least in Win9X times).

Bioshock Debug Logs and glxinfo
Revisiting Bioshock I came across an odd behavior if you have to Ctrl-C or
'killall Bioshock.exe' to exit when and if it hangs on exiting to the desktop
and then trying to restart.
If I try to restart thereafter without changing anything I'll get this
output(GL_FRAMEBUFFER_UNSUPPORTED/GL_INVALID_FRAMEBUFFER_OPERATION) and a
frozen opening menu screen.
See attachment with debug logs and glxinfo.
If I change the ORM to 'backbuffer' everything loads and displays OK. If I
switch ORM back to 'fbo' I still get the error and frozen menu screen.
The only cure I've found for this is to delete the ~/.wine/update-timestamp and
reupdate by doing a simple 'winecfg' or 'regedit'. After that FBO detection is
OK and it loads and displays normally again.

Currently, the WINE implementation of ddraw seems to use the same functions for
front/back buffer handling, function that seem to be based in the ddraw7
interface and prohibits explicit front and back buffers. This breaks a fair
amount of older games which rely on earlier ddraw interfaces.

--- Comment #34 from Jörg Höhle <hoehle(a)users.sourceforge.net> 2010-02-15 11:44:39 ---
Hi,
it would be useful if the many folks interested in this issue could investigate
a little more and figure out the nature of the thread that calls the
CALLBACK_FUNCTION.
A) is one thread created per call to DriverMessage? (ouch, what Damjan's patch
does)
B) is there a unique "WINMM callback thread" that receives one notification per
CALLBACK_FUNCTION event and invokes the function? (i.e. redirecting
DriverCallback FUNCTION to the message queue of one THREAD which then
sequentially calls the functions).
C) is one such thread created per xyzOpen with CALLBACK_FUNCTION?
D) the callback in invoked on the callers thread (some sort of
ExecuteInContext), because winmm processing occurs in another thread already?
E) is that serviced by some other entity altogether?
Then I believe there's a good change to get a patch accepted in Wine.
My observation is that winmm/midi* functions are affected as well as wave*.
MSDN says about MIDI in+out:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd798478%28VS.85%29.aspx
"Applications should not call any multimedia functions from inside the
callback function, as doing so can cause a deadlock..."
People warn against calling winmm functions in various forum posts I googled
up, indeed reporting (sometimes random) hangs on native.
"... Other system functions can safely be called from the callback."
This is different from what Damjan says in comment #18.
I've seen logs of apps calling midiStreamOut from within the MOM_DONE callback
(without hanging). This is clearly not allowed, but apps do so, so Wine must
support it.
There's a particularly interesting note about MEVT_F_CALLBACK:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd743561%28VS.85%29.aspx
"Any events after the MEVT_F_CALLBACK event in the buffer will be scheduled and
sent on time regardless of how much time is spent in the callback function."
This suggests that indeed there's a decoupled entity that invokes the callback
functions and does not disturb the time-critical playing of MIDI notes. Wine
currently would freeze MIDI output while busy in the callback.
Perhaps this decoupling only applies to MEVT_F_CALLBACK and not to other
messages like MOM|WOM_OPEN|DONE, but perhaps the mechanism applies to all of
winmm?
Regards,
Jörg Höhle

This is a fully reproducible crash, I think it's different from bug 9787 as the
patches there were only needed to be able to host a game on BNet (I did not
patch War3 with those but using older versions of Wine like 0.9.59 I was able
to play on BNet without problems).
The bug happens when you login to Battle.Net. The login seems to proceed OK but
when the bronze doors open there is a systematic crash:
FATAL ERROR!
ACCES_VIOLATION
The memory could not be 'written'.
It tries to access memory at 0x00000078.
I reproduced this using 1.1.27, 1.1.28, 1.1,31, 1.1.32. Gentoo Linux, kernel
2.6.30.9, nvidia-drivers-185.18.36 on x86.
Until this bug is fixed, I can unfortunately no longer play War3 under Wine :(

(lack of explicit access and creation of front and back buffers in WINE for

--- Comment #61 from Ben Klein <shacklein(a)gmail.com> 2010-02-14 17:01:24 ---
(In reply to comment #50)
> Minor - For minor loss of functionality, or other problem where an *easy
> workaround is present* (virtual desktop).
> Trivial - For a UI glitch that doesn't affect running of a program
> Does "blanking the screen" affect running the actual program? - No.
I'd like to put in my vote for returning this bug to "Major". Reasons:
1) Affected applications (which is quite a few apps for widely different
purposes) may still run, but lose substantial functionality. What good is a
video player that doesn't show videos? If this is the same bug that affects
Diablo, it makes it impossible to create a new character without memorising the
menu structure on a non-Wine solution. (Loading an existing save game is
easier.) Does that count as "an easy workaround"? I say no, because it depends
on something completely external to Wine, or a hacked version of Wine that is
known to break in other circumstances.
2) Virtual Desktop is not a workaround. From what I gather, what *is* a
workaround is getting the application to run in windowed mode, in which case
the blitting mode has to be switch by the app so that it only locks to the
window, and doesn't try to lock the whole screen. I probably don't understand
the problem correctly, but "Virtual Desktop" and "run the app in windowed mode"
are very different things, and games that exhibit this bug do not tend to have
windowed mode.
3) The only proper solutions to the bug are nearly impossible.
I wouldn't mind seeing Stefan's GL ddraw solution become an opt-in registry
option for upstream Wine.

Texture wrapping is still not yet supported (wine 1.1.38)
It affects games like Thief: Deadly shadows and Deus Ex 2: invisible war.
For Deus Ex 2 I can say that textures are present, but game runs VERY slow
(making game nearly unplayable. It can be played on modern PC's with strong
processor and "no output" option - but it is still slow).

ReportedBy: fernandocarvalho1987(a)hotmail.com
I have tested wine-1.1.38 with Oblivion on Gentoo and I found that the sound
effects are no more being played.
It seems that it was a regression on wine, since this problem didn't appeared
on the earlier releases.
Even in wine-1.1.37 the game was nearly perfection with feel major bugs.
I don't think that this is a problem with my Gentoo installing, because I was
playing Oblivion without this bug since the last installation and I haven't
made any changes on the system, only updating wine.

"Sorry, this application cannot run under a Virtual Machine".
Maybe the error is caused by:
fixme:reg:GetNativeSystemInfo (0x404b61ee) using GetSystemInfo()
I think XTrap recognised the return of GetSystemInfo() as a Virtual Machine
reply. I already compares the output of Windows GetSystemInfo() and Wines
GetSystemInfo(), there was no difference between them.

This happends when you try to update resources in Dll linked with relocs by MS
LINK.exe because after .rsrc there will be .reloc section.
That works fine on WinXP and later, but fails on wine.

Create 'foo.bat' containing
echo This batch file lives in %~dp0
When you run it, it should output the absolute
drive and directory of the directory containing
the batch file. This seems to work ok in casual
use... but if you put the batch file into, say,
C:\foobar\foo.bat
and do
$ wine cmd
c:> PATH %PATH%;c:\foobar
c:> foo
you will see the name of the current directory, not the expected c:\foobar.
This breaks lots of batch files, including
http://src.chromium.org/svn/trunk/tools/depot_tools/gclient.bat
which normally are run via PATH by developers who work from the
commandline.

I created a wiki page.
Please test the patches here and include it with a description into the wiki.
I made a sample and it should be clear how it should be done
If another patch from here works with a special game or so please upload the
patch again at the wiki and link it to the upload and create a new table with
the patch link and so on.
If this is done the admins can delete some of the hacks here so it gets more
clear and at the end only one attachment is in here. That for the FIX

This bug affects Lost Planet too. At least the demo. In windowed mode or
virtual desktop, the mouse escapes the window, in fullscreen mode the mouse
works only in menus and not in game (after a while you can't turn around). When
using MouseWarpOverride=force, the mouse is stuck at the center of the screen
in menus (you have to use the keyboard), but it works correctly in game.

Sorry for yet another mail...But I have to draw a line here. Stop it!
Bugzilla is not a forum. It's not here for discussing the relevance of hacks,
other discussions and especially NOT for HELP questions! This page is for
_fixing_ bug 6971, and only that.
And Wine is not a democracy. If Vitaliy doesn't want hacks in here, there
better won't be any. While I agree that hacks are needed until Xinput 2 is
available, it still doesn't justify spamming this bug with useless chatter
For all I care, make a Wiki page for your hacks and maybe link it here.
The next time someone asks how to compile Wine or why his hack won't work with
game xy, I'll go crazy.

He said that it covers three Unreal Engine generations, and that's basically
what's being affected by this bug. Of course, if it doesn't work in windowed

If you believe that it's better to post all of the patches/hacks in a Wiki,
