This sounds like the best solution to me as well. The only problem with it is that it is unlikely one would want wine to monitor every single directory that any program accesses. Windows programs are notorious for opening many files in many directories. Perhaps the cache could be designed as a needs-based cache. The cache could keep a list of each directory accessed, the last time it was accessed, and a count for how many times the directory has been accessed in the last 2-3 seconds. Once the count rises above a threshold for a directory, caching of the directory would begin. Once a directory hasn't been accessed for a period of time, it could be removed from monitoring and caching. This would provide for smart memory management and significant performance increases as well. More comments are needed on this so a request can be submitted for the best way to do this. Wine's got a good history of rejecting patches and I'm not going to be very excited about starting work only to have to redo everything once I finish. We also need a test program to demo this. Note, that the error seems to have changed over time. Originally starting with a OleRevokeClientDoc (1) problem, then moving onto a OleRevokeServerDoc (3) and now onto a OleRevokeServerDoc (2). Unless I'm mistaken, these are status codes (1 = OLE_WAIT_FOR_RELEASE, 2 = OLE_BUSY, 3 = OLE_ERROR_PROTECT_ONLY). I could be wrong, but this does seem to fit the results. The traces over time also become slightly more descriptive, which seems to show Wine handling the app (OLE) better. According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/83454 OleRevokeServerDoc should be issuing a OLE_CLOSED notification to the client, but OLE_CLOSED doesn't seem to be defined. I've tried adding a simple definition in the hope the app would handle it, but it didn't help (the link does mention that it might not). If I set to OnPerfomance I have a way better performance - though it still isn't as good as in Windows though. I am using a nVidia 9600 GT Green Edition with the 190.25 driver. I've created this bugreport to share the workaround. The workaround is based on the work of SKLP(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1051483), I just enhanced it a bit and posted it here as I don't think developing it in a distribution-specific forum is a good idea. This workaround implements a "fake" hardware cursor. You still can't tick the "Hardware Cursor" option in the WoW settings, but thats not necessary. What it does is to ignore if the game instructs to hide your normal cursor. In addition it hides your normal cursor if you press the left or right mouse button. You can also replace your normal cursor(e.g. to look like the WoW cursor). It ships a blank cursor for WoW, so the ingame cursor doesn't always lag behind your normale one. All together, it mostly feels like a real hardware cursor. There is only one exception: If your WoW cursor would change, e.g. if you're pointing on an attackable mob, the changed icon will be shown below your normal one. I think its possible to hide them, but I don't know which filename WoW expects(have to look around). I've attached the patch together with four files. The first, blank.blp, is a blank cursor for WoW. Copy it as "Point.blp" to WOWFOLDER/Interface/Cursor. This is allowed by Blizzard, its the official way of changing the ingame cursor icon. The second one, "normal", is an XCursor you can use. It looks exactly like the usual ingame cursor. The other two ones are the sources for "normal", you can regenerate it with "xcursorgen config > normal". I've taken the cursor from http://zanowin.deviantart.com/art/WoW-Cursors-28331812. Just set the environment variable "WOW_CURSOR" to the XCursor you want to use, for example export WOW_CURSOR="$HOME/.winewow/normal" If you don't set it, it will use your pre-set cursor. Maybe someone discovers a way of determining which cursor the game is displaying(for example, the sword if you're pointing on an attackable mob). I pulled myself away from the richedit controls for a bit to track this down. I found that the problem was with DencryptMessage being called with a data buffer that contains incomplete records. This will happen when a lot of data is received at a time. The schannel code in wine was handling this by letting the partial record be pulled by libgnutls, so no decrypted data will be returned for the partial record, but will be included in the data returned from the following call to DecryptMessage. This seems alright so far, but the amount of data that can be returned for a call to DecryptMessage is limited to the size of the buffer holding the encrypted data. Once the buffer was filled on a call to DecryptMessage, it would ignore the rest of the encrypted data without notifying the caller in any way. So the next DecryptMessage will try to read the next record header, but will read from the wrong place, causing errors that cause the disconnection. The patch I submitted deals with this by not letting the pull function give libgnutls a partial record for DecryptMessage, and then notifying the caller about the unprocessed data by changing an empty buffer to a buffer fo type SECBUFFER_EXTRA with a size field that gives the size of the unprocessed data. This is documented on MSDN at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa375412(VS.85).aspx Currently the test suites for schannel don't cover EncryptMessage or DecryptMessage. These tests should probably be implemented in order to make sure this is implemented properly, but my patch at least seems to make Google Talk happy. When playing Oblivion with music enabled, chances are you'll constantly be switching between the area's main theme and the battle theme, which currently in wine results in a brief slowdown (bug 14186 was filed regarding the slowdowns), during this transition quartz quite often crashes, when *sample == 0x00000000, is passed to IMediaSample_SetTime(). Direct copy/paste from Fabio Capela's mail providin more details: I use Wine mostly to play World of Warcraft and I've had a regression in World of Warcraft (when running fullscreen inside a virtual desktop and using the opengl renderer) with patches from the last two weeks: - Patch 12d1ff8ef6c34533a20008f4cfeb73ee4c601a5d (winex11: Add handling of take focus event on the desktop window.) makes the fullscreen WoW inside the virtual desktop window lose focus when the mouse cursor returns to the virtual desktop window; as a consequence, WoW will minimize inside the virtual desktop whenever the mouse cursor leaves and then returns to the virtual desktop window. For some reason this does not happen if I use the DirectX renderer, only with the OpenGL one. - When the previous patch is reversed, patch e3720c2810dda3895d6734c55117b0a355223b1a (winex11: Use the Globally Active focus model with take focus.) makes the virtual desktop window unable to receive keyboard focus unless it is the only open window, and even then it's decoration will behave as if it hadn't focus. Mouse works fine. This is happening with the current vanilla git; with both above patches reversed the problem disappear. The game refused to start with the message "Trying to load PE image for unsupported architecture (AMD-64)" and referring to OpenAL32.dll. The OpenAL32.dll and wrap_oal.dll DLLs in wine are different from the DLLs installed into Windows. When I replaced them with Windows ones Warzone runs OK. Warzone 2100 installer runs the OpanAL installer which installs the DLLs. Previously I installed Warzone into wine 1.1.10 or 1.1.13 (do not remember) and the game started OK. The help window uses Wine Gecko. This is a regression, as it worked better with several versions up and including 1.1.11 than it does more recently. With Wine version 1.1.11, the text would display. With Mandriva 2008.0, it displayed very well. The same Wine version with Mandriva 2009.0 displays strangely, but the text can be read if the user really wants to read it. I have not investigated the issue between the two Mandriva releases. Wine version 1.1.12 would not install without applying a patch to the Wine source, so results there are a bit muddy. With Wine version 1.1.13, the right-hand help window is always blank, even when there should be text displayed. Wine version 1.1.14 behaves identically to 1.1.13. I'll attach the stdout/stderr output from Wine in case that helps isolate the problem. This output happens whenever the user clicks on another chapter of text to view. David Lee Lambert has logged the blank help text window problem in his test results using Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 "Etch". I would be happy to provide debug channel output. If hwnd is created by current process, there is no problem. But in above code, Notepad is not the current process. After the installation it starts fine, the License-Dialog and Login-Screen appear correctly. After entering the login data, the client tries to communicate with the login server (authentication and fetching the server list). This doesn't work with Wine. I attach 2 wireshark protocols. The windows protocol shows data in the tcp packets from both sides after the SYN. The Linux/Wine protocol shows data only from the server, the client (running on Wine) doesn't send data, just an ACK packet. This leads me to the suspicion, that either the RPC library on Wine is not working as expected or there is some encryption, which is only done with empty stubs on Wine. I tried to substitute rpcrt4.dll and secur32.dll on wine, but it doesn't solve the problem. As the Windows rpcrt4.dll leads also to an error (something with service manager, but after maybe 30sec it continued), I removed it again from the list of native libs. Attaching d3d 8,9 tests and relevant excerpts from test output generated on native and Wine on my machine. On native, VS versions 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0 do not seem to make any difference for shaders tested. A little strange, maybe shader compiler upgrades version or something. But PS versions do matter on native. It appears that on native PS 1.4 doesn't support FP specials inside calculations - seems to be receiving clamped values and further working with them as regular numbers and doesn't output FP specials to floating point surface. I've put adding/substracting small constant (0.1, -0.1, 0.1, 0.1) into PS shaders for observing such things. And, in fact, everything in PS 1.4 appears to be clamped to 0..1. Whereas native PS 3.0 does seem to fully support FP specials and can output them to floating point surface. When PS 3.0 outputs NaN to regular RGB surfaces, it seems to be converted to 0 (black). BTW I could only get it to receive a NaN, cases where VS could be expected to generate +/- Inf somehow end up as NaN in PS anyway, I think maybe this is because vertex interpolation produces NaNs from several Inf input values. Could just as well be bugs in my code though :/. For the purposes of fixing Max Payne 2 lightening, the most interesting part is that, on native, "rcp of 0, mul by 0" (this is what goes wrong in MP2 essentially) in VS seems to pass to PS an actual zero, this is similar across all VS/PS setups including fixed function, d3d8 and 9, and looks clearly different from cases when NaN actually does seem to be passed to PS. Really does looks strange, but so far despite trying hard I can't identify any bugs in this part of tests. Is consistent with what happens in real Max Payne 2 game though. Combined with the fact that rcp 0 DOES produce FP special (Inf) accoring to my tests, this would mean somehow Inf mul 0 = 0 in VS on native. Not exactly what is supposed to happen but then this is Microsoft stuff, so who knows :/. In general, a lot of these results do not make sense as a whole and vs IEEE specs or MS/Nvidia docs available. That was a lot of shaders, and I'm not biggest shader guru, so part of issues could be due to my errors. It would be great to get more results especially on ATI (both on Wine and native), this could help make sense of some of these results and also identify suspect areas in tests. Also, probably I should mention I used D3DXAssembleShader and native d3d9x DLL for generating shader byte code, could also be introducing some distortions. It may perform some optimizations and modifications, but I did experiment with options to try and get closest thing it can produce. If anyone knows more sure ways to get exact byte code of shader assembly, feel free to suggest.
