Summary: Sibelius 4, line-breaks, text overlap
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.60
Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: werner.zangerle(a)gmx.at
No line breaks in Sibelius 4. Text on the score that should have line breaks
shows up all in the same line, making it impossible to read it. Time Signature
is also affected, when using a 4/4 signature only on "4" shows up, when using a
more complicated one, both numbers are printed on another.

Summary: Silent Hill 2: random slow down
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.59.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: minor
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: t0p0linik(a)yahoo.it
I'm running SH2 with this hardware: athlon 3000+, 512 MB of ram, matrox g550 on
xubuntu gutsy (7.10), wine is run in emulated desktop @1024x768.
When the game runs at normal speed it is enjoyable of course.
But half the time i play, it is very slow. I can't tell what component causes
this because no extra messages come from the command line (many fixme messages
but they are not related to the slow downs). What i know is that this happens
at random time and place (i mean, in the game) and i think this is not due to
scene complexity, it happens during the normal game (so with variable scene
complexity) but also:
- during the game start and load menus,
- when James doesn't move (it waits), with the light on or off,
- when i look at the inventory,
- when i look at the city map,
- during a cut scene (the game uses bink video).
Well, it can happen at any time!
Further, the same random is for slow downs disappearing! The same scenarios
cause the game to get faster at normal speed, when nothing changed.
I really don't know what to investigate.
Sometimes i can restore the normal speed moving a large window over the wine
desktop (so forcing wine to redraw the whole window) but, i said, sometimes;
this doesn't work anytime.

I tried to start a game called Final Liberation. However it failed to start and
got a dialog box with "EnumDisplayModes Failed" and ok button.
Got OpenSUSE 10.3. I can run with 'warn+all', but it creates 13meg file. So
decided to use less debug messages for smaller log file.

Intan-t is a instant messenger client.
It allows to connect to third-party IM networks (i.e. Yahoo!, AOL) and also
acts as a client for a private corporate IM network managed by it own server
software.
It's licence is propietary.
The installer works 100% ok. I have no issues to report on that.
However, whentrying to launch the program issuing
$ wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Instan-t/Instant.exe
...it won't ever draw a single window.
I'm attaching a bzip'ed wine.log as a result of having the WINEDEBUG variable
loaded with +relay,+seh flags as suggested by user «Thunderbird» @ the IRC

at least have stubs. The output from running it was:

I wonder if I still need the no-CD patch?
I updated the game and everything that I could do I did,

I don't get it how the trial version worked,

According to MSDN, CreateFile can be used to obtain a handle on a device on
which DeviceIoControl can be performed. Also, code in
kernel32/volume.c:GetVolumeInformationW seems to rely on this.
However, wine always fails with error code 2 (file not found). The following
test case illustrates this:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa363147(VS.85).aspx
I've tested their code both on native winxp and win98. It works fine on winxp
but fails on win98 (with error 2 too, like wine).

When the music in enabled and playing, there is a buzzing sound in the left
stereo channel (I'm using headphones, so I can very clearly tell it's only in
the left channel.) The buzzing is continuous, but the volume seems to vary
with the music: it seems that the buzzing suddenly gets louder after low notes.
(You might have to wait a few seconds before the buzzing becomes obvious on
the title screen.)
Note that the audio file itself is fine: it's a regular MP3, and it plays
without any buzzing in VLC. Also, there doesn't seem to be any buzzing with
the music disabled.
I'm using Wine 0.9.50 on Ubuntu 7.10.

The best way to enter text using DNS9 is with Dictation Box, a temporary window
that is called into being with the voice command "Show Dictation Box."
The box is supposed to close with the command Transfer, which is supposed to
copy the text into a buffer and paste it into the current application, wherever
the cursor was before DB was opened.
The Dictation Box opens correctly, and text enters correctly. But the Transfer
command does not place the text in any buffer at all -- the text just
disappears, and DB with it.
I have tried to paste into both DragonPad and Notepad. Neither works, although
both should.
I have run the program using a terminal. There is no output when the Transfer
command is made.
This is the terminal output when DB comes up.

In the Quake Wars demo when you scroll the mouse wheel, it is supposed to move
the voice shortcut selection up or down by one. In Wine it is scrolling twice
instead (so you can only select 1, 3, 5 etc.).
The normal terminmal output probably isn't useful for this as it doesn't
generate anything when scrolling. Is there anything I should attach? I have
set this to dinput as I know the game uses dinput, but this may be wrong.

Austin,
I tested this with wine 1.1.26 tonight and the bug still exists. Mouse-overs
worked initially, but then stopped working after switching to the lobby window
and back.
You can download the client software from here:

Is there some way we could change the title of this bug to something like:
"DirectPlay not implemented in Wine, and needs native Windows dlls to be
installed."
... otherwise, for example in the Total Annihilation page,
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=7306 , someone
just glancing at the page might assume that, as the bug says at the moment,
online play actually doesn't work, which is not exactly what the bug is saying,
and not really true, since there are workarounds available, by following the
instructions at http://wiki.winehq.org/DirectPlayGames .

I've attached 2 screenshots that show the problem on wine 1.1.26 under Ubuntu
9.04 (Jaunty). The PokerStars client is version 3.158 and the installer can be
downloaded here:
http://www.pokerstars.com/PokerStarsInstall.exe
Here's a recipe to reproduce the problem:
1. Download PokerStarsInstall.exe from above
2. Run the installer 'wine PokerStarsInstall.exe'
3. Click 'Next'
4. Agree to the license agreement and click 'Next'
5. Click 'Install' to do an express install
6. Click 'Finish'
7. If any 'News' windows pop-up, click the 'Close' button
8. Click the 'Play Money' tab
9. Scroll down the list until you find a table with more than 2 players and
double-click on it
10. Resize the window

It looks like there is a workaround for this bug.
If you want to configure the controls, start Soldat in a virtual desktop. Then
click on the key you want to configure. The mouse disappears. Move it up until
you reach the titlebar of the virtual desktop (the mouse will appear again) and
focus it by clicking on it. Then type the key/mousebutton you want to assign.

I've just merged the Google Chrome versions as there was entries for each minor
version with one test result in each.
Unfortunately, on doing so, comments and bug links were deleted and not moved.
Comments are no big loss, but having to search for the bugs and add them again
is a pain. No emails are sent to say what bugs were deleted.
Is this intentional, or has something gone wrong?

Summary: Very bad performance in Monolith games (NOLF, F.E.A.R.)
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.12
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: directx-d3d
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: zarquon(a)t-online.de
Many Monolith games show very bad performance (at least in some levels). The
most extreme one is naturally F.E.A.R. (although AFAIK I have everything set to
medium and optimized my WINE settings according to AppDB, e.g. hardware shaders
and offscreen rendering to FBO), but since I also encountered rather hefty
performance problems in the much older "No one lives forever" series I think
the bottleneck is probably code typically used in many Monolith games,
isolating which may be much simpler in older games like NOLF, as opposed to
pretty cutting edge stuff like F.E.A.R.
I have an x86_64 dual core Linux system with 4 GB of main memory and an Nvidia
GF7900GS with 512MB RAM, which can run even Prey under Wine like a charm. In
F.E.A.R. OTOH, frame rates dropped to something like 4 FPS on the most extreme
occasions, despite medium settings. When I monitored my graphics card's
temperatures during one session, it looked like it wasn't really doing much, so
the bottleneck has to be somewhere in the emulation layer.
Looks like you can download a demo version of NOLF here:
http://www.fileplanet.com/49582/40000/fileinfo/No-One-Lives-Forever-Demo
and NOLF2 would be here:

no real inpact on game.

I installed Wine and Irfanview 4.25 successfully. However, when I attempt to
launch Irfan I get an error message blaming Wine: "i_view32.exe has encountered
a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
This can be caused by a problem in the program or a deficiency in Wine..."
I have attached my installation log for Irfan if anyone cares to check it out.
I have no clue. Love Irfan and wish I could use it with Ubuntu 9.04

if they are added automatically, then they must be deleted automatically too.

Photoshop CS4 page faults on startup.
Native gdiplus stops this, but / has to be removed in winecfg because of the
"broken font" problem or native gdiplus will also cause a crash.

A number of workarounds are needed to get this far (see
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=14318) but
basically IE6 and native gdiplus are installed.
Photoshop CS4 page faults on load. Removing drive z: stops the page fault, but
for obvious reasons, it's not ideal.
However, a user can simply add a new drive for their home directory, shared
directory and whatever else, so this is kind of a workaround....

Just updated to git, tried installing Jumpstart 1st Grade classic.
Crashed as follows:
=>0 0x7eb29ace add_dos_device+0x1de(letter=-1,
udi="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_label_1stGrade________",
device="/dev/sr0", mount_point="/media/cdrom0", type=DEVICE_CDROM, guid=(nil))

2 0x7eb2afc8 hal_thread+0x1a8(arg=(nil)) [dlls/mountmgr.sys/hal.c:249] in
mountmgr.sys (0x0074ea88)
After rooting around a while, it seems this is a
use-after-free bug; when add_dos_device() calls
delete_dos_device(drive), it should also set volume to NULL,
since deleting that drive also frees the volume.

It only means an application doesn't allow that. Any listview with
LVS_EX_HEADERDRAGDROP style should allow column dragging. Try utorrent lists

--- Comment #13 from Igor Tarasov <tarasov.igor(a)gmail.com> 2009-08-01 18:08:22 ---
First up, I've made clean git clone, and wine version is not
wine-1.1.26-232-g39876f4, but wine-1.1.26-231-gfe9d360. Next, I get a huge lot
of various font-related errors when running any application (including
complains on missing freetype while freetype is there), and all russian
characters are being displayed as boxes in all applications. There is no such
error in wine-1.26 from repo. And I've builded wine somewhere in 1.24 version
on this same machine, and it was okay.
But anyway, I've patched the code, launched regedit, opened import dialog, and
was unable to drag columns. They just behave as they did. I've checked out some
other applications and they all do not work.
BTW, wget -qO- http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=22742 | patch -p1
produced the following:
patching file dlls/comctl32/listview.c
patching file dlls/comctl32/tests/listview.c

Hi All,
I find myself constantly going back to my XP Virtual Machine to use the file
manager's file properties context to get the "version" of files I have
downloaded.
Would you please consider adding this function into Wine File? It would sure
save me a lot of time.
Many thanks,

Wine's console output
On a working box with Windows XP which can run Transformers very happily, it
won't even start on WINE, saying there's no pixel shaders 1.1 support.
The game requires d3dx9_31.dll and xinput1_3 to be copied on the game's root
folder (or wine's c windows\system32) in order to keep running (else it says it
can't find those files).
After that's done, the following errors occur (shown in attachment).

When installing ConText v0.98.5 on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) everything
seems to be fine but a Program Error pop up window appears stating the
following:
"The program winemenubuider.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
The funny thing is ConText works fine otherwise with Wine? - Not sure why that
pop up occurs. Because it also occurs when running the application through wine
once installed. I simple close and go about my work and like I said ConText
seems to work just fine otherwise.

I thought this was the way Wine does it now :)
What about this: Wine gets (for case insensitivity) a solution like ciopfs: all
files are stored in lower case, and then Wine keeps a database file (sqlite or

whether they are hidden. Using SQLite, it wouldn't be too slow; Wine doesn't
need to read all files in the directory since the files are lowercase.
It only needs to search if the lowercase file does not exist, in which case it
does search and if it finds a file, it renames it to lowercase and adds it to
the database to speed up future searches; this is necessary to merge from older
Wine versions. This solution will only be noticeably slow when an application
continuously asks for a non-existent file; and it will be just as slow as the
old Wine solution. It will also be backwards compatible, only older versions of
Wine will not return the original filename but the lower case one (since they
search the whole directory anyway).
Any objections, except that SQLite support is needed?

That's only a real problem as far as that program only writes lowercased

It would just work like wine works now; readdir() I guess. :)

Ok. I agree the main flaw in the idea (the fact that from outside wine, the
case insensitivity isn't enforced) makes it a no-go. I could implement this
special hidden file support (or even generally, extra file flag support) in
Wine, but it may take a moment since I'm totally not accustomed to Wine's
source, I've never seen a bit of it.
If there's anything I should read about the plans related to this before I
start, please drop me some links and I'll get coding. (that's apart from the
normal stuff a beginning Wine developer should read, I can find those on my own
;) )

fly any time soon.

Changing description as suggested by AF to just the hidden file bug,
changing category to ntdll.

(that's apart from the
normal stuff a beginning Wine developer should read, I can find those on my own
;) )
--- Comment #24 from Dan Kegel <dank(a)kegel.com> 2009-07-30 13:40:43 ---
maybe one could use xattr to store a user.wine.hidden
attribute with the file... but Ubuntu doesn't ship with
/home mounted with user_xattr, so that's not likely to
fly any time soon.

Summary: Extremely slow character rendering in all apps over
freenx
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.12
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: kkant(a)xmission.com
Wine 1.1.12 on Fedora 10 x64 renders fonts/characters extremely slowly when
operating over a remote freenx session. This affects all apps, including
winecfg. Each character is rendered pixel by pixel in an agonizingly slow
manner; it makes me think that raw bitmaps are being sent over the freenx link,
rather than character data with a fontname. The symptoms appear anywhere text
is rendered in an app: menus, text fields, lists, etc etc etc. The bug can be
confirmed by running winecfg.
I experienced this bug with Wine 1.1.12, Freenx server 0.7.3 (the latest
version in the Fedora repository as of Jan 22 2009), and the NoMachine nx
client for windows v3.3.0-3 (downloadable from nomachine.com).
This is a new bug in 1.1.12 that did not exist in the previous Wine version I
was using (1.1.9). I reproduced this bug several times after removing my
~/.wine folder and reinstalling 1.1.12. I reconfirmed that the older version
1.1.9 does NOT have this bug by removing version 1.1.12, removing the ~/.wine
folder, and reinstalling version 1.1.9.

Game crashes when adding some objects, most notably terrain. Can reproduce
pretty regularly. Terrain additions seem to cause crashes when 1) There are
other recently added objects nearby, and 2) When more than 2 terrain squares
have been added before "committing" the changes with that menu selection.
Wine version is 1.00. Have tested on Ubuntu 8.04 with integrated graphics card
and PCLinuxOS 2007 with ATI card with the same results.

And for the blank menus problem, just running Wine as Windows 95 in winecfg fix
it. I've put a new entry in appdb that's being revised explaining these
workarounds for v2.51... I think they'll work for older versions of DVDlab...

Thanks to this bug, I always ran this app without the function of adding
chapters, until this bug prevented me from adding videos to my projects. After
many trial and errors, I finnaly found a workaround that even allows adding
chapters. Worked for me with DVDlab 2.51 (Wine 1.1.26 binaries from official
repository): go to "View" menu, click on "Reset Bars and Windows..." and
restart the program. Then, before the program starts it'll appear a popup alert
for 1-2 seconds and then the app will terminate. Just click OK button before
this window disappears and you'll have a fully functional DVDlab. Reopen the
program if you can't get the OK button. I hope this works for everybody.

Right now its a hassle to post and edit notes for applications that has a dozen
different versions. You need to copy/paste the note across different versions,
and if you need to edit one of them you'll need to update all manually.
It would be very handy if there was a checkbox area with the existing different
versions of the applications so the app maintainer could choose which versions
that the note would be shown in. This would also update the note when it need
to be edited and thus eliminating the need to edit the same note across several
versions.

Yes, EDIT_builtin_class. It creates a "subclass" and reserves extra window
memory for pointer storage. Most of the time it uses an index relative to the
original cbWndExtra value when calling Get/SetWindowLong, but one spot in the
window procedure is hardcoded. Definite brain damage.

I tracked down the cause of this bug, but I'm not sure what to do with the
information.
Short version: It assumes cbWndExtra for the system "Edit" window class is 6
(it is in XP), but Wine defines it as sizeof(EDITSTATE *). This leads to an
invalid pointer dereference.
It's obviously a bug in Civ2, but we can't really fix that. I can provide
(lots) more detail if necessary.

Console log from application
Running Wine 1.1.26 - when trying to save a file in MS Publisher 2003, a dialog
box appears saying:
"The disk is full trying to write C:\windows\temp\[name of temp file].tmp. Save
this file on a different disk and/or drive."
Around this time, the following errors are produced (full console log
attached):
fixme:storage:StgCreateDocfile Storage share mode not implemented.
fixme:storage:StgCreateDocfile Transacted mode not implemented.
fixme:storage:StorageImpl_CopyTo Exclude option not implemented
(the latter 6 or 7 times)
The app then produces the same error message, but this time referring to the
actual intended file save location instead of C:\windows\temp.
I'm happy to report back with any additional test data needed if someone can
let me know what I need to do?

Terminal output in D3D9 mode in wine-1.1.23
Demo_Shadows.exe crashes under the following conditions:
1. Run the program
2. Select Texture shadows

4. Select Material setup > Depth Shadowmap (PCF)
Selecting options in a different order does not cause the crash.
It happens in both D3D9 and OpenGL mode.

My distro is Ubuntu 9.04. If Wine is working Flash Player(9 or 10) in my Opera
Browser(9.64) doesn't work properly. When I'm trying to open a web site with
Flash elements the site slows down and whole Opera Browser freezes for 5-10
minutes or more and eventually the site loads well but without Flash sound. If
I close Wine(end wineserver process) all works perfectly.

UO often crashes when launched by Razor (a .NET application), it appears to be
due to some stack corruption as all stack traces originate at

some font installers as well.)

As said on Bug #15649 it were ASLR causing the crashes and later the bug-report
were closed. I wish to bring this up again because when i tried to deactiavte
ASLR but Razor still crashes just as many times as when ASLR were activated.
I think i do not need to publish any error reports or debug information since
we do have them avaible at http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15649

A special windows-only version of Synergy that allows keyboard
sharing/broadcasting to multiple computers over the network, is also affected
by this bug and its pretty much useless now.
I'd really like to see the existing code fixed and merged into the main
codebase.

I noticed something else ... while running with a lot of debug flags which made
sc slow:
After selecting battlenet and when the login screen appears, I see that the
background is properly drawn ... and then it fades out! (and not in)
I guess the last 'black' color is transparent and therefore all the rest of the
battle.net GUI is broken.
--- Comment #106 from nick ves <vespenegeyser(a)hotmail.com> 2009-06-18 14:02:55 ---
5 years after it was first opened its still occurring? score one for starcraft
:D still resisting the devs haha
its still occuriing in 1.1.23
--- Comment #107 from dzs6w3(a)gmail.com 2009-06-24 00:51:12 ---
Items not being cleared, the black color instead of surfaces reminds me of a
problem with flipping buffers and clearing the screen.
Perhaps Starcraft does its drawing of the battle.net menus in an unexpected way
that prevents it from working correctly with wine's implementation of direct
draw.
With the newest development (see previous post), I am curious to see what
happens if wine is changed so that the the back buffer and front buffer are
swapped. Perhaps we will get the background image (without text) of the
battle.net menu.
I do not know much about this stuff, so I am currently unable to do this
myself. Moreover, I do not know if it is even feasible.
Also, I think the battle.net menus work properly in Starcraft ran through
cedega. Maybe we can see a diff of wine's implementation of direct draw with
that of cedega. This is what I'm going to be doing since my ignorance will not
affect looking at differences in code as much as trying to find the problem by
just looking at wine's code.
--- Comment #108 from dzs6w3(a)gmail.com 2009-06-24 00:55:46 ---
Well, there goes comparing cedega to wine. The direct draw code is not
released with the cvs version of cedega.
--- Comment #109 from Lauri Niskanen <ape(a)ape3000.com> 2009-06-25 13:38:36 ---
Shouldn't the importance be trivial or minor instead of normal? It doesn't look
so nice, but it doesn't affect the game functionality at all. And it's only
active on the menus, not on the game itself.
--- Comment #110 from Freddie Tilley <freddie.tilley(a)gmail.com> 2009-06-27 06:04:49 ---
>From what I have gathered from other bugs related to this is the following:

All the battle.net text child windows only draw the text and no graphics.
Apparently on a transparent background.

--- Comment #111 from Freddie Tilley <freddie.tilley(a)gmail.com> 2009-06-27 06:08:47 ---
>From what I have gathered from other bugs related to this is the following:

Apparently on a transparent background.
[desktop window]

+-->[battle.net window]

So all the graphics are being draw, but because the battle.net window
is drawn on top with a transparent background the graphics window does
not show.
The battle.net hack floating around, that does draw the graphics, does not
draw the text dialog windows.
Does this have to do with the fact that X11 does not support alpha blending,
and that what is now drawn as black is supposed to be transparent?

partial redrawing
I have noticed that even though in most of Battle.nets menus we get the
overlapping text, there are areas that does not have that issue... even though
i am not a programmer I think that maybe there we can find a clue of what is
causing the problem...
As other said the backgrounds are being drawn below the screen and when i have
wine creating a virtual desktop if i move over another window on top of
starcraft the window stays drawn there.

I have managed to get battle net to work for starcraft. I did this by
installing window fonts on Linux. Battle net works now even though the
background is black and text can be a hard to read when the text over laps.
This is not a perfect fix but you can do battle net.
The link for installing the fonts is

same as #111
I installed the fonts in a different way though:
go to a windows machine and copy the folder c:/windows/fonts.
paste it in your linux folder and simply use the font installer that comes with
your distro.
for Slackware 12.2 -> go to Control Center > System Administration > Font
Installer... click in administrator mode and enter your root password.
