Summary: Control-C kills console programs under Wine
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: phhs80(a)gmail.com
I use a program, which runs on the console, to perform some calculations.
Sometimes, it is necessary to interrupt the calculations (the program requires
Control-C to do such an interruption) in order to change the value of some
program options, in the middle of the calculations. However, Control-C kills
the program. Can developers improve Wine in the direction of coping with this
problem?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

As far as I can see, '$shtdwn$.reg' is not prefixed with a dot or anything, so
that can't be the problem here... Right?

The problem is the installer expects the file to be hidden, in the Windows way,
e.g., not a '.', but given the hidden attribute, which Wine does not support.

You said:

I thought this was the way Wine does it now :)
What about this: Wine gets (for case insensitivity) a solution like ciopfs: all
files are stored in lower case, and then Wine keeps a database file (sqlite or
so?) containing the original filename and other non-ext properties, like
whether they are hidden. Using SQLite, it wouldn't be too slow; Wine doesn't
need to read all files in the directory since the files are lowercase.
It only needs to search if the lowercase file does not exist, in which case it
does search and if it finds a file, it renames it to lowercase and adds it to
the database to speed up future searches; this is necessary to merge from older
Wine versions. This solution will only be noticeably slow when an application
continuously asks for a non-existent file; and it will be just as slow as the
old Wine solution. It will also be backwards compatible, only older versions of
Wine will not return the original filename but the lower case one (since they
search the whole directory anyway).
Any objections, except that SQLite support is needed?

> Any objections, except that SQLite support is needed?
You forgetting that Wine doesn't have it's own FS. Nothing prevents a program
outside of Wine to copy a file into "C:".
Also what about the rest of the root file system (/)?
This can only be supported for files created from within Wine. The actual
attributes can be stored in the special hidden file in the same directory
(preferred) or the globally (not portable).

That's only a real problem as far as that program only writes lowercased
files... I think that's an acceptable thing, isn't it?
> Also what about the rest of the root file system (/)?
It would just work like wine works now; readdir() I guess. :)
> This can only be supported for files created from within Wine. The actual

Ok. I agree the main flaw in the idea (the fact that from outside wine, the
case insensitivity isn't enforced) makes it a no-go. I could implement this
special hidden file support (or even generally, extra file flag support) in
Wine, but it may take a moment since I'm totally not accustomed to Wine's
source, I've never seen a bit of it.
If there's anything I should read about the plans related to this before I
start, please drop me some links and I'll get coding. (that's apart from the
normal stuff a beginning Wine developer should read, I can find those on my own
;) )

It seems that Command and Conquer generals listens only on the loopback address
for network connections. As a result, network play is impossible. Strangely,
sometimes you can actually see other games on the network, but you cannot join
them. Even direct connections fail. When examining your own network settings,
it seems bound to a loopback address (see screenshot).

Summary: AppDB votes system is being cheated
Product: WineHQ Apps Database
Version: unspecified
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: appdb-unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org

Currently, there are 2 apps with obviously fake votes. These are
High Velocity Paintball
(http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=11442)
Silencer (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=9823)
HVP has 2 test reports by teh same guy and no comments, yet it's listed that
>100 have voted for this app. This smells awfully like someone is trying to
cheat to get his app supported.
Silencer also doesn't seem to be legit.
These apps currently reside on the frontpage of AppDB without any
justification. It would be interesting to find out who voted for these apps and
if they were added by a bot. For the future, I suggest a captcha for
registration on AppDB.

Summary: wine prefers loopback devices over regular files
Product: Wine
Version: CVS/GIT
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-kernel
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: rmh(a)aybabtu.com
Created an attachment (id=9920)
--> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=9920)
fix loopback handling
When using a loopback device as a wine drive, wine will prefer to use the
loopback device (e.g. /dev/loop0) for volume access rather than the regular
file it's based on (e.g. ~/foo.iso).
>From dlls/ntdll/directory.c:
else if (!stat( entry->mnt_fsname, &st ) && S_ISREG(st.st_mode))
{
/* if device is a regular file check for a loop mount */
if ((device = strstr( entry->mnt_opts, "loop=" )))
{
char *p = strchr( device + 5, ',' );
if (p) *p = 0;
return device + 5;
}
}
I'm not sure if this has any advantage, but it has a big inconvenient. It's
almost certain that /dev/loop0 is owned by root and not world-readable, and
it's also mostly certain that wine isn't being run as root. If the image is
user-owned, by using the loop device we lose the ability to read it.
This typicaly causes breakage that is difficult to figure out. For example,
see
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=727&iTestingId…
Note: I'm filing this separate from bug 10957 because it's an unrelated issue.
The patch I'm attaching here collides with the one I sent for bug 10957, but
takes both situations into account.

On WINE 1.0.1 Arcanum
(http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=3476) runs fine,
even on my hardware (laptop with Mobility Radeon 9700, open-source drivers).
However, with the introduction of the new versions (at the moment I can confirm
this happening with 1.1.9 and 1.1.12) Arcanum runs unplayably slow. I have
tried also to run it after installing the proprietary drivers for my graphics
card, but to no avail.
Since exactly the same thing happens with Sid Meier's Civilization III
(http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=7905), it's
somewhat a reason to believe it happens on many other DirectDraw 2D
applications/games.
Moreover, changing the default ddraw renderer to opengl instead of default in
regedit only makes things worse, regardless of the application.
However, when a 3D application, like World of Warcraft, is introduced, the
rendering is fine, with no noticeable slowdown (actually works a bit better
than in the stable version, at least for me).

The game starts and loads the first menu, player creation. After that it shows
a loading screen, which renders extremely slow, and finally crashes.
Just one more note: I didn't experience any problem with the d3dx9_36.dll (to
my knowledge) as referenced in the 13465 and 13406 bugs.

I tried the suggested methods to force Thief2 to run on a single processor, but
this merely produced the same crash again.

The graphic file selector dialog
In Greetings Card Factory, a typical operation is to add a graphic from a file.
The application has its own dialog box for this which previews a range of
graphics built into the installation. At the top it has a box to allow you to
specify other drives or folders. This pulldown list includes the 'drive_c' and
the Linux users' home folder - populating sensibly from .wine/dosdevices it
would seem.
However clicking on one of these to navigate the folder now brings up a dialog
box with the message 'Please insert disk' with buttons 'Retry' and 'Cancel'. Of
course there is no disk to insert (this is not a CD-Drive we are selecting),
and so neither of the two buttons do anything useful. Accordingly the user
cannot navigate either drive_c or their Linux home folder.
This use to work fine in the wine-0.9.x series. It is in the recent 1.0-rcX
releases that it has 'broke' - and thus seems a regression.
I'll add a couple of screenshots. Unfortunately there is no easy demo installer
for this app, but I'm happy to help debug.
I guess there is a certain module that it is likely to be?

When there is a continous source nearby and I look left or right from it, the
L/R channels are supposed to change volumes. However this doesn't work properly
in Wine.
The channels are of same volume when looking directly at the source. Then say I
look away left from the source and the sound volume decreases on the left
channel and reaches its minimum at around 35 degrees away from the source. This
it the same as in Windows.
However when looking further away towards 90 degrees, in Windows the volume in
the left channel increases back to a certain point and I think it gains some
sort of effect. But not in Wine, in Wine the left volume just stays at the
minimal level.
This happens with both ALSA and OSS. Default rate is 44100, default bits 16.
Audio chip is Intel HD audio.

The gunshot sounds and other weapon sounds (reloads, switching guns,

same for both left and right channels.
I mean the L and R volumes change as I look around - looking in a certain
direction both channels are the same, and the volume shifts as I look more left
or right.
However the footsteps sound right.
This happens with both ALSA and OSS. Default rate is 44100, default bits 16.
Audio chip is Intel HD audio.
I've attached a log with +dsound - I started the game, loaded a savegame, then
shot a few rounds in each direction, first towards the source, than left,
right, and away from. Then I minimized it and hit ctrl+c.

The current handling of the numeric keypad is strange in two aspects:
1) The Decimal / Comma / Del key (key 104) behaves very strange: It produces
*both* a Backspace and a comma character on my machine, when Shift is active.
2) In general, the interaction with Shift is odd. This is a quite complicated
area. Windows, QT, GTK all uses different models, but Wine does not follow
either of them. I'm suggesting that Wine should follow the QT model, which has
also been implemented in rdesktop. For details, see
http://www.cendio.com/~astrand/keyboards/numpad.txt. Patch will follow.

I don't think this is something we can't ever achieve in Wine. Yes, there's
some problems with exact padding values etc (e.g. Version 6 uses double padding
as I remember for item in report mode), but lot of case are fixable in reliable
way.
Francoit, if you still have some test cases which don't pass yet on Wine,
please reopen this, send me drafts of any kind if you're too busy for that.
I'll be glad to help here.
P.S. Anyway today listview performs better than 8 years ago in LVM_GETITEMRECT.

Patches create_tables to run when apidb does not exist
The create_table script has the following commands :
mysql -p -u root apidb < create_user.sql
cat create_apidb_base.sql appdb_tables.sql \
prefs_list.sql user_list.sql user_prefs.sql \

xorg log on failed start
Wine 1.1.25 added SM 2.0 support to the ARB shader path allowing Eve to start
on lower end, non-GLSL supporting hardware.
Application opens fine, log in screen works, as soon as character selection
screen appears i get a _very_ hard lock. (there may be related bugs to this
bit but the result is much different here).
Xorg CPU usage hits 100%, SSHing in from an other machine and killing /
restarting Xorg/GDM does not fix the issue, each time Xorg attempts to start
it pegs the CPU @ 100%, text only console modes are also unavailable, any sort
of video out is gone until issuing shutdown -r via ssh, some things "change" on
the screen but its garbled plaid-like patterns.
wine crashes when xorg cpu usage goes up, a +opengl,+d3d,+wgl log ends with:
intelWaitIrq: drm_i915_irq_wait: -16
(full log is 150MB will upload whatever parts of it are requested)
xorg log on failed X start attached.
specs:
eeePC 901
Intel GMA950
ubuntu 8.10
drivers/mesa/xserver from intrepid repos.
wine 1.1.25 used primarily, tested 1.1.26 also
for comparison i ran EVE on my desktop (Nvidia GTX260 card) with UseGLSL set to
disabled to force the ARB shader path, everything appeared to work fine.

In Thief 2 and in System Shock 2 the space bar is used for "mantling", or
climbing onto a barrier -- in both these games it's necessary to hold the space
bar down until the maneuver is complete.
Unfortunately under wine this does not appear to work. My best guess is that
the "holding" of the space bar is somehow being interrupted at the API level.

Well... It was a system freeze that only lasted seconds including crash of the

Yes, I fear you were right. The crash occured with the

You now have to jump through some hoops to get the exe. I eventually got hold
of it by visiting the site above and following the links to this location:
http://www.free-downloads.net/downloads/xplorer2/
Appears to be fixed now, at least for me - version 1.1.26. The program does not
crash when I start it, and appears usable. Can someone confirm and close?

fixme:d3d_caps:IWineD3DImpl_FillGLCaps Received unrecognized GL_VENDOR Tungsten
Graphics, Inc. Setting VENDOR_WINE.
You may want to use a driver that supports GL_EXT_framebuffer_object and
GL_EXT_framebuffer_blit. There are some D3D blits which are just slow in opengl
without those extensions and there is not much we can do about it.
Specifically, blitting with X and Y stretching to a texture that is bigger than
the framebuffer. (in case of ATI cards use the binary driver, not the open
source one)
These extensions are mostly a matter of implementing them in software.
Virtually any video card, even <= dx7 ones should be able to handle them.
Unfortunately fbo_blit is a fairly new extension, so cards which do not have an
actively maintained driver won't get it supported. In case of such old cards
I'm not really willing to invest much time into them either.

The integrated media player seems to have a problem (wine 1.1.25), it refused
to play any media file, being mp3 files or video files (tried several different
codecs) or even jpg images. A "media error: error 0x80004005" message appears
(error number is different according to media type)
In console appears:
err:quartz:GetClassMediaFile Media class not found

Installation now works perfectly in Wine 1.1.26. Running the game crashes with
a segfault. I'm going to attach a +relay log but I think the problem stems from
this part of it:
0009:Call KERNEL32.CreateFileA(0032fcac "C:\\Program
Files\\NFS/Global\\GlobalMemoryFile.bin",80000000,00000001,00000000,00000003,00000080,00000000)
ret=008df144
0009:Ret KERNEL32.CreateFileA() retval=ffffffff ret=008df144
There is no "Global" subdirectory (I installed to C:\Program Files\NFS)
although creating it manually doesn't help.

Created an attachment (id=22467)

trle +d3d crash log
Since some of latest wine versions TRLE does crash again (won't start up at all
if hardware acceleration [wine d3d] is used, just black screen and crash
error). Attached is the crash log. Without hardware acceleration it does start,
but still image is somehow overly zoomed.
Can somebody please add download link from comment #14?

Summary: some features for winepath to make it better work in
scripts
Product: Wine
Version: 1.0.1
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: programs
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: HoraK-FDF(a)gmx.de
Hi,
i'm currently working on a bash script that must handle DOS paths and so i
found some things that would make winepath better for scripts.
first thing:
If u have the DOS path C:\nop and convert it to unix style u get
/root/.wine/dosdevices/c:/nop but for some scripts you need the real mounted
path that would be in my case /mnt/C/nop. To get this done with bash i must cut
out the /root/.wine/dosdevices/c: make an REALPATH=$(df
/root/.wine/dosdevices/c: | cut -d ' ' -f 25) (REALPATH is than /mnt/C) and
combine it with the /nop that takes much time in bash if winepath can do this
by it self that would be a giant speed up, bound this to an option like -r
--realmountedpath or so would be great.
secound thing:
If a file lies on the dos dirve G:\file.nfo and the drive is assigned with
winecfg to ../dosdevices/k: winepath outputs ../dosdevices/g:/file.nfo witch
results to that the file cannot be found because its on
../dosdevices/k:/file.nfo. So you must have all drives exactly assigned like
the would appear on real DOS (G:\ = ../dosdevices/g:). This can be avoided with
checking the wine config, a option like -c --checkwinecfg would do it.
... greetings HoraK-FDF
