That bug is about alsa? Can't you try OSS for the purposes of testing this bug?
For all I know, it works in 1.1.8, character creation, biography editing and
the game in general. But this seems to only occur for some people in the first
place. So if anyone who seen this can retest and/or add any additional info,
please do so (important defails such as exact game version - any patches or
addons used, 32 or 64 bit system, type of install - full or compact, and
whether it reproduces with a new clean wine profile with all default
settings).

Even without that hook patch, the installer seems to be
happy with our gdiplus today. Sweet!
(BTW this time I just copied the disc contents as root,
then used chmod to make them readable by other users.
No need to create symbolic link farm.)

I'm not quite sure where this request should be filed, so here goes.
I've found that some newer displays (laptops specifically) are not able to
provide the older traditional resolutions (640x480 or 800x600).
For instance on my T61p, only the following resolutions are available:
$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 640 x 512, current 1920 x 1200, maximum 1920 x 1200
default connected 1920x1200+0+0 0mm x 0mm
1920x1200 50.0* 51.0 60.0 61.0
1680x1050 52.0
1600x1024 53.0
1400x1050 54.0
1280x1024 55.0
840x525 56.0
800x512 57.0
700x525 58.0
640x512 59.0
Some applications will not start unless they can change to their desired
resolution (BF1942's intros require 800x600). While it is possible to
configure wine to provide a windowed virtual desktop, this doesn't tend to work
very well with many games/applications that once started can actual run at one
of the higher native full screen resolutions.
What I'm thinking would be a good compromise would be to simply utilize the
first resolution that would wholly encompass the requested resolution and
center the output when the requested resolution doesn't exist. So, for example
with BF1942, it would get the 1280x1024 screen resolution and the 800x600 intro
movies would be centered.
Does this make sense?

Installer is broken in git. The 20 version won't install, saying you need to
get the 30 version. Installing it loops when trying to upgrade jet, since wine
version in XP. Setting it to 2k allows the update to attempt to install, but it
crashes.
Should file new bugs for that if anyone wants to pursue.

Created an attachment (id=17317)

Jesse Allen's starting DIB engine applied to current git
This *big* patch is for testing Jesse Allen's dib engine with some changes in
order to have it compiling in current git tree (date 2008/11/16).
It's just for testing purposes, as it misses *many* stuffs; I tested it on
AutoCad and, besides many display problems, it shows noticeable speed up on
drawings containing TT files.
A note : this DIB engine don't draws TTF so, using autocad, you'll notice 3
conditions :
1) Far zooms (much wider than text sizes; Autocad uses internal text
approximation, no speed difference.
2) Middle zooms (texts about 1/20 of screen size); autocad uses some internal
approximation, but making heavy use of dibs. Here the speed is some 50 or more
time faster than without dib engine
3) Near zooms : fonts disappears because missing font routines in this engine.
The speed is indeed good as point 2.
Icons on toolbars are not displayed because of missing stuffs in engine.
I have put the patch here to get some feedback and some advices on how to
proceed.
A side note : in the engine ALL winex11.drv corresponding functions are present
OR (most of them) stubbed, so you'll see a lot of fixmes (which can slow down
painting if displayed).
Ciao

It looks like the problem is losing focus as mentioned by Peter Fales. I can
set a breakpoint in NtCreateFile, NtReadFile, and everything is fine up to
there. Once I exit NtReadFile though, the TroopMaster loses focus and doesn't
respond to keystrokes or the mouse. The window does refresh, but that's about
it.
Another case where TM gets hung is if you try and look at the DotNet log
(File->TroopMaster DotNet...->View Log File) This is basically the same
situation where the program is downloading data from the server and loses focus
after it's done.
Still haven't figured out how to fix it though :-(

Started looking into this hanging problem again. I built wine-1.1-8 from source
and stepped through the debugger when TroopMaster froze. It's stuck in a loop
in calls to GetMessageW from GetMessageA. I put in a printf to print out the
message, and after I'm done downloading, I get several WM_PAINT messages, then
it goes into a loop with WM_TIMER messages.
Before the WM_PAINT, I get a message with value x036a. This is unknown in
winuser.h, so maybe wine isn't handling unknown messages properly. However, I
also see this message the second time I bring up TroopMaster and the data is
loaded locally.

Summary: VC6 debugging not working
Product: Wine
Version: 1.0.1
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: kresander(a)yahoo.com
I have used Wine to compile and run fairly large programs (each more than 75
source files and 2GB, 5GB of source code). Background is available in my post
at Wine User's forum under title Cannot install Visual C++ version 6.0 (VC6).
My last reply in the thread is this:
+++ begin +++
So far, I have tried four projects from Windows to Linux/Wine. All compiled
using VC6 on Wine and ran ok the first time. The two largest contained 78 and
105 cpp files with approximate source file sizes 2GB and 5GB.
Features used:
GUI: most standard and extended controls via dialog calls/macros
and CreateWindow, various window positioning/resizing functions,
messageboxes
GDI: most except paths
CHARS: most functions defined by <tchar.h>
FILES: fopen, fread, fwrite, ftell, fseek, fclose, _findfirst,
_findnext, _mkdir, remove, _tunlink
MEMORY new, delete and most memory and <string.h> functions.
Did not use MFC or ATL frameworks, just plain, Windows API functions
and as few of these as I could manage.
Did not use Windows file and directory functions.
Did not use c++ exception handling
Did not use Windows memory allocation function or older mallocs.
BUT
could not get the debugging to work.
1. on entry to the Windows main program:
int PASCAL WinMain( ...)
{
WNDCLASS wc;
MSG msg;
int a = 1; // for testing debug
int b = a + 1 ; // testing debug
hmodule = fhInstance ; <<< put breakpoint here
Values of variables a and b were reported as unknown expressions.
2. a little bit further into WinMain at call to CreateWindow for
main window:
hwndmain = CreateWindow( "GenericAppClass", ....
The program entered CreateWindow, but never returned.
Does debugging work, or have I entered unchartered waters?
+++ end +++
I don't write bigger and more resource-demanding programs than those mentioned
above. The VC6 compiled these with ease, ran without a single glitch and the
IDE behaved as I was used to see it. With debugging working there is no reason
for me to be on Windows any more. Have wanted to leave for years.
VC6 is an excellent product (too good to be Microsoft) and it now seems it can
offer cross-development on Linux. Really worth pursuing in my view.
You can reach me at kresander(a)yahoo.com.
Best regards
Ken Resander

If the user who you run wine as has a limit on the amount of virtual memory
they can use (set directly through ulimit -v or through as - address space
limit in limits.conf) wine will not work. The error message is:
wine: failed to initialize: /usr/lib/wine/ntdll.dll.so: failed to map segment
from shared object: Cannot allocate memory
Removing the limit on virtual memory works around this issue.

Command and Conquer 3 seems to use animated cursors, and these have never
worked. However, older versions of wine displayed a cursor (basically the
standard black on white pointer, but rotated about 45 degrees
counterclockwise), as of Wine 0.9.57, Wine does not display a cursor at all.
This turned C&C 3 from very playable into completely unplayable, despite being
nearly flawless otherwise (bug 8122 being a minor exception).

Mass Effect repeatedly crashes for me after menu. (fbo set)
Since there was a bunch of fixme's regarding d3d_shader in the wine log, I
thought to see if there was something odd visible with WINEDEBUG=+d3d_shader
on.
Wine couldn't even start graphical mode with the flag set on, it crashed
instantly. This probably shouldn't happen, it seems to me impossible to debug a
problem if behaviour changes when debug flags change program behaviour. The
latter thing is repeatable too.

There is a small bug in winecfg application. If user unchecks the "Allow window
manager to decorate windows" and "Allow the window manager to control windows"
wine draws window borders. It's ok, but unfortunately winecfg appears as
unfocused (even though I am clicking on the window and doing stuff) - the title
bar is a grey to light grey gradient instead of blue. Clicking on the desktop
and clicking again on winecfg window brings the focus to winecfg. If user will
start winecfg and won't click on anything else than winecfg's window, it won't
take focus at all.
It happens only with winecfg (all applications I am using are working fine), so
I think it is related only to winecfg. Cheers

I am assigning myself to this bug because I have started implementing
windowless richedit controls according to my proposed steps I already
mentioned.
I have an initial implementation of ITextHost, and now I need to replace
references to editor->hWnd with calls to ITextHost_Tx*. I replaced a couple
GetDC calls and made sure it compiled and run without problems, so the calling
calling convention wrappers seem to be working. It won't be until I can
completely get rid of the ME_TextEditor.hWnd variable that I will be able to
move on to implementing ITextServices.
In the mean time, if someone wants to help me, adding TextServices tests would
be very helpful.

It wasn't easy, as you mentioned, but I got an the initial tests in for
windowless richedit controls, so all the thicall stuff has been handled for the
tests. Now all you need to do is use the traditional c macros for calling the
c++ methods.
Thanks for all the work you and Maarten Lankhorst did in starting the tests,
and Alexandre Julliard also helped in letting me know what still needed to be
done, and he even cleaned up my final patches on commit.
Now I can start working on the defining an ITextHost for the richedit control,
which will require macros these thiscall methods from the richedit code. This
time wine/port.h can be used since it won't be in the tests.

to install them. I foolishly clicked yes, ultimately I now have sound in Guild
Wars but I no longer have sound in Team Fortress 2.
I've just gone through all the Audio configurations, just Alsa, just OSS, all
of them ticked, none of them ticked, Device Emulation, no Device Emulation,
nada, not a thing.
I also tried padsp, still no sound in Team Fortress 2.
Please ask for specific outputs as I'm lost with where to start.
Thanks

I tried again in Ibex + Wine 1.1.8, and I managed to install the game with a
few errors at the end regarding registration. Now I get the same error message
than the original first post in this bug report when I try to load the game.
There is also a 1.1 patch available, I get this error:

How did you guys manage to make this work? I have set Win95 as Windows version,

I was going through bugs untouched in 6 months. There was download keyword, or
url, so I pinged it like the others. I've added them now, I may take a look if
I get time, otherwise, it's there for others to do so.
This is why it helps to put ALL the details of a bug in the original report.

I observed this same exact issue under Wine 0.9.59 from the Ubuntu Hardy Heron
repository when it was released... then it was fixed in Wine 0.9.60. Now the
issue is back in Wine 1.0 RC1.
Everything works fine in Microsoft Word 2000, until I minimize the window and
then restore it. Thereafter, the menus ("File", "Edit", "View", etc.) do not
appear when I click on them. There is no visual response either when mousing
over the menus. Also, right-clicking in the workspace no longer pops up a
context menu.
This faulty behavior persists until I close Word and then re-open it, at which
point everything is fine again until I do a minimize/restore.
Please don't let this regression into Wine 1.0, please.
Thanks,
Ben

Previous to Wine 0.9.5x (sorry I can't be more specific) Pro/E 2001
Student/Personal Edition was running rather well and was usable for many things
without crashing. I recently upgraded to Wine 0.9.57 and it stopped working
altogether. That is, it would display the splash screen, remove the splash
screen and then nothing would happen. There were no warnings, errors, etc. -
not even any stub/fixme messages.
Yesterday I updated Wine to 0.9.61 hoping that would fix the problem, but
unfortunately it didn't. I also tried a fresh Wine directory with a fresh
install of Pro/E (with modified batch files so that it'll run under Wine), but
still no luck.
So far as installing goes, it will only install if the Windows version is set
to win95 or win98. Anything greater than that and the installer will complain
that it can't get write access to the Program Files directory.
So far as running goes, it has run the same no matter what the Windows version
was set to.
When it did run, right before starting, wine would spit out four lines of some
stub function that was getting called.
If you need a copy of my modified startup batch file or a copy the install disk
for testing purposes, let me know.

I'm having similar memory issues. Resident memory of the process climbs
steadily throughout use... additionally, there seems to be an issue with memory
allocation. The virtual image is shown in top as just under 4 gigs (3755m) on a
system with only 2 gigs RAM and a 4 gig swap! This is definitely not right. I
am using wine 1.1.5 in Intrepid Ibex on an amd64.

I've followed the "How to" (found here:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=14322&iTesting…)
related to the game applying these two patches to wine version 1.1.8
http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=15638http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=17130
The game installs fine.
The launcher works fine.
The problem is when the game itself attempts to start, nothing appears on the
"screen" (in windowed mode) and it will simply hang there until I interrupt it.
I'm running ubuntu gnome, AMD Sempron CPU with an nVidia GeForce 5200 FX
Graphics card. If you need anything else just ask, I'm pretty eager to resolve
this and start playing F3 finally.

Summary: No report presented

Version: 1.1.8

AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org

I've been running the conformance tests on my Linux desktop pretty frequently
for quite some time. I hope it will help the developers in any way.
For long everything was fine. I ran the tests and submitted them, and soon the
results appeared nicely among other test results in
http://test.winehq.org/data/. But then, a month ago or so I noticed my report
didn't appear in the table anymore, although I ran the tests and submitted them
several times. Well, at first I thought, that maybe you've cut down multiple
reports by the same Wine version and reporter, because I was running the tests
with the development version and not the git. The new Wine version came, and
yes, my report was found again. I thought it was just because of "cutting the
crap" and I felt it's quite ok.
But now, with Wine 1.1.8 I've got no report whatsoever! I've run the tests
three times quite normally, without any crashes (one timeout, though), and
submitted the results as always. But no report has appeared in the tables at
all...
I know nothing has changed in this end, except the Wine version. Has there been
some cut on reports presented or is this really a bug?

Suggestion:
Make menu detection manual.
If ScrollLock is on use one behavior (that works in menu)
else use another behavior (that works in game)
Or vice versa.
I don't think that ScrollLock is widely (if at all) used in games, so toggling
it shouldn't break anything.

If you only care about playing X-Wing: Alliance, you may find this helpful. I
managed to overcome the problem by installing wine 1.1.8 (which is affected by
the bug) and replacing /usr/lib/wine/dinput.dll.so with the one from 0.9.15,
which is not affected. Other versions may work too.

This has been happening for a while now, I'm just now reporting it. When I'm
playing WoW, and I have a scene where the skyline isn't obfuscated, WoW locks
up, and CPU usage spikes. Looking at the ground fixes the problem. This
happens a lot in coastal areas.

Ok tested KDE and Gnome and both have the same behavior. This is independent of
the Desktop manager used.

Summary: PulseAudio Support
Product: Wine

Wine should probably incorporate support for the PulseAudio sound server,
especially for compatibility with Ubuntu, and/or other distributions where
PulseAudio is the default. At present, the only way to route wine sound through
PulseAudio is to set wine to OSS mode and run through a wrapper.
