Summary: wineprefixcreate does not work for relocated

Patch for wineprefixcreate to allow nonstandard PREFIX installations
I am installing wine in a nonstandard directory (i.e. PREFIX). Wine is
designed to support this, with helpful environment variables like WINEDLLPATH.
wineprefixcreate is also designed to support this, internally using $datadir,
$dlldir, and $bindir to remove any hard path dependencies. However, there is a
bug. In 0.9.59, wineprefixcreate will not find the fonts directory, and
therefore will die with an error before actually creating .wine/.
Patch attached.

Hey!
As of version 0.9.60 (and any higher version, including 1.0rc1), the Office
2007 components can be installed using the appropriate guides but cannot be
run. For example, Word crashes and pops up a window asking if the user wants to
debug. If you restart the software, it asks whether the user wants to enter
safe mode. Safe mode does not work either.
Version 0.9.59 of wine can install and run the software just fine (provided you
follow the installation guides and current limitations shown on the AppDB still
stand).
Regression testing shows that the following commit is the culprit:

Missing DLLs, first startup
I was able to install the named game ("Activision Value" needs to be added to
AppDB!) from retailer CD but it is refusing to run. What I have done so far:
- Launched the game, but it complains about missing DLLs (see "Missing DLLs,
first startup" log for details)
- Added d3dx9_32.dll, d3dx9_36.dll msvcp80.dll and msvcr80.dll from
dll-files.com to the SoF:PB root directory because of it is complaining about
missing such files and the built-in d3dx9 file is lacking about a function
- Launched the game again (see "Launch problem, second startup" for details).
If you need a relay I can create it for you. :)

Summary: wineprefixcreate overrides custom entries in

ReportedBy: aelschuring(a)hotmail.com
I have been playing with specifying custom paths for user shell folders, in
order to be able to use the same wineprefix for multiple users (r/o C: drive,
r/w D:). But it seems that every time I run wineprefixcreate, it overrides some
of the paths specified in
[Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\Shell Folders].
I'll shorten this up for brevity:
arno@master:~$ wine --version
wine-0.9.59
arno@master:~$ rm -fr .wine
arno@master:~$ wineprefixcreate
Could not load Mozilla. HTML rendering will be disabled.
/home/arno/.wine updated successfully.

"Desktop"="C:\\windows\\profiles\\test\\Desktop"
"Favorites"="C:\\windows\\profiles\\test\\Favorites"
"History"="C:\\windows\\profiles\\arno\\Local Settings\\History"
Also, the overrides that are displayed here do not come from userdef.reg
(tested by modifying userdef.reg), they appear to be coming directly from
[Software\\Microsoft\\Windows
NT\\CurrentVersion\\ProfileList]\\"ProfilesDirectory"
I'm not sure what the intended behaviour of wineprefixcreate should be (I think
it should not modify existent keys, only add missing ones), but at least the
inconsistent behaviour is a bug.

Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2

ReportedBy: rob(a)ladle.net

When running Chess Tactics for Beginners, from Convekta software (
http://www.chessok.com/ ), it installs fine, but then won't run.
I run
wine ./wine/drive_c/Program Files/Chess Tactics for Beginners/tactics.EXE
and get the splash screen and the initial application window. When I click on
the splash screen, I get three popups. The first one is titled "Error", with
the text "Runtime error 501 (249)", the second one is titled "tactics", with
the text "Cannot change Visible in OnShow or OnHide." The third one is titled
"Error", with the text "Runtime error 501 (249)". After I click OK on the
third one, the application window goes away. There were no messages on my
console, either.
If I run
wine ./tactics.EXE
the same things happen.
I note that this same text shows up in bug 6352 which is about CT-Art 3.0, also
from the same company. However, there's a report that this was fixed. I
installed wine tonight from the repository, and also re-installed "CTfB", to
try to duplicate the fix in 6352. No such luck.
Thanks,
Rob

Hi,
I am running Ubuntu 7.10 AMD 64, with Wine 0.9.58 (0.9.48 had this problem as
well).
My motherboard is a asus p5w Deluxe which uses the ALSA driver for sound.
Basically the bug is there is no sound working at all.
I ran winecfg from the terminal and change the audio settings but nothing
worked and nothing was logged to the console.
What would be my next step to get some meaningful logs to you...
PS: dmesg doesn't bring up anything...
Thanks and Regards

Summary: automatic wine environment snapshot (time machine)
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.4
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P3
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: bluedzins(a)wp.pl
It would be useful if wine could make automatically snapshot of its entire
environment -- changes in registry, new programs installed. User would
configure how much snapshots he/she would like to have.
After (example) bad install of some bad program I could revert to the situation
before installation -- I could choose reverting wine registry files, deleting
programs files. This would work even if program would not allow for full
deinstallation.
Another example of usage would be running wine with not current registry set,
but selected -- with two options:
a) as temporary set -- all changes are gone as soon as wine quits, so after
full run there are no changes of any kind in wine
b) as current set -- so the previous set is promoted and the changes are saved
to the new-current snapshot

Slowly improving. Particle effects now stay visible, gradually fading while I
zoom in, until a ship fills half the width of the screen or so. 1.1.4+ git.
It's usable for spotting ships now. Eyecandy of burning ships ... not so much.

Summary: provide support for raw text editing of registry files
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.4
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P3
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: bluedzins(a)wp.pl
Well, wine lives in linux environment so it is quite natural if registry files
(wine files) would be editable in unix manner -- grep, diff, patch, sed, etc.
Unix advantage (one of many) was and is batch text processing. Adding in the
middle special GUI tool just for editing stops any automatic processing.
Besides either you underpower your own program (regedit) comparing to existing
unix tools or reinvent wheel again.
So, if registry files have to be written in utf8, non-utf, raw unicode, well,
in short it does not matter really -- the wish is, please establish any
encoding necessary for raw text editing, so common-sense operations like
(example) removing entire lines till empty line would be guaranteed to work.

Output on running wine notepad, then using File->Open, navigating to directory
When using the Windows native comctl32.dll, using the open file dialog box to
navigate to a directory which contains a file with a "strange" name (Chinese
characters) causes the program to crash.
Here is a hex dump (output of "ls" in the directory) of the specific file name
that caused the crash (the final 0x0a is not part of the file name):
00000000 57 57 20 43 35 31 30 20 2d 20 e8 be a6 e8 b1 8e |WW C510 - ......|
00000010 e6 ba 90 e5 ae 92 2e 6c 6e 6b 0a |.......lnk.|
0000001b
To reproduce this behaviour:
- Create a file with the above name.
- Use winetricks to install native comctl32.dll
- Use winecfg to override the built-in comctl32.dll if necessary
- wine notepad.exe
- Choose Open from the File menu and navigate to the directory where the file
is.
Attached is the console output resulting from doing that on my system. The
first line of the output, before an unhandled page fault message, is:

Hmm, maybe the bug I'm fixing in Defcon isn't the one that was originally
reported, that might have been fixed at some point, oh well. Defcon crashes in
ws2_32 when attempting to load a new game. I've submitted a patch to
wine-patches.

With wine 1.1.4 tested on ubuntu 8.04:
The background color is shown but the brush/pen is ignored. For Windows
developers wanting a better compatibility under Linux I suggest this workaround
in the WM_CTLCOLOREDIT message:
COLORREF m_BackgroundColor;
HBRUSH m_BackgroundBrush;
with MFC:
case CTLCOLOR_LISTBOX:
pDC->SetBkMode(TRANSPARENT);
pDC->SetBkColor(m_BackgroundColor);
HBRUSH hbr = m_BackgroundBrush;
return hbr;
Windows API:
case CTLCOLOR_LISTBOX:
::SetBkMode(hDC, TRANSPARENT);
::SetBkColor(hDC, m_BackgroundColor);
return m_BackgroundBrush;
Windows will correctly use only the m_BackgroundBrush because due to the
TRANSPARENT settings the m_BackgroundColor is ignored.
Linux Wine will ignore the Brush and use m_BackgroundColor. Of course
m_BackgroundColor should be similar to the more complex m_BackgroundBrush.
just my 2 cents
Andrea

Aha, this is interesting:
If I start wine as "wine D:\Setup.exe", it works, but if I just type "wine
Setup.exe" in the right directory, it doesn't work.
The app seems to rely on GetCommandLine() returning a full path.

The crash happens with ORM=fbo only. This is regression that was caused by one
of the patches moving ActivateContext around.

Well, Rob, I am not so sure -- with Wine 1.1.4 the installer crashes with very
similar 6 call points (only 3rd one isn't decoded properly or so):

Hello,
no need to confirm/test this bug over and over again for each wine release.
As long as there is no patch sent to wine-patches nothing will change.
In previous comments I already gave detailed analysis and provided a
proof-of-concept patch which works.
So again I outline the required steps for *any* takers to write a proper patch
which might please AJ.
Just give it a try, it's not that hard... this bug exists for such long time
and the solution is here ;-)
Take ntdll LdrAccessResource() as example how an asm wrapper is used.
The asm wrapper for kernel32 ExitProcess() needs to resemble in following
manner:
--- snip ---
55 pushl %ebp
8B EC movl %esp,%ebp
6A <imm8> pushl <imm8>
68 <imm32> pushl <imm32>
pushl 8(%ebp)
call <real_wine_exitprocess_fn_impl>
leave
ret $4
--- snip ---
For the API entry point opcodes which need to be exactly matched I gave the
byte values on left side (Shrinker looks for signatures).
Hints:
"movl %esp,%ebp":
You need to force the assembler to emit the opcode bytes given on left side
directly (by using ".byte 0x8b, 0xec" instead of writing "movl %esp,%ebp").
This is because there exist two encoding forms and gas will most likely emit
the wrong one 0x89,0xe5 but Shrinker looks for 0x8b,0xec.
"pushl <imm8>" and "pushl <imm32>":
Make sure gas really emits the 8 bit (0x6A + 1 byte operand) and 32 bit (0x68 +
4 byte operand) immediate pushl forms (by using ".byte ..." as above to be
really sure the opcodes emitted or by choosing proper constants).
Choose your own constants, they serve no particular purpose in Wine.
Shrinker 3.x will later overwrite the "pushl <imm32>" instruction with a long
jump to it's own code.
Regards

people, it's a regression.

Trying to do the same in wine 1.0 no longer works. I get an error window

The console output has one line that I don't understand, but possibly could
have something to do with this:

Just for the record, I'm still seeing this with wine-1.0-1.fc8 supplied with
Fedora 8. I've been living with the "download the data then kill the program"
hack, but I keep hoping for a better fix. :-)

I just installed TM2008 with DotNet using wine-1.0 on ubuntu-8.04. I get the
same issue with TM freezing after downloading the database. I haven't noticed
any problems with corrupting the database yet, but I haven't done anything with
it yet either. The database corruption bug has me a little worried.
What can I do to help in debugging this? I can install TM in VirtualBox, or on
a separate XP partition, but I want to be able to do away with the need for
that XP license. (I have XP SP2, but I like linux.) I'm not sure how much time
or expertise I can bring, but I'm willing to try and help where I can.

Summary: Unreal II XMP: program launches with errors
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.3
Platform: PC-x86-64
URL: http://www.xmpcommunity.com/download.html
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: pastas4(a)gmail.com
When trying to launch Unreal II XMP, the screen starts acting oddly. Not even
sure how to describe it, and no way to take screenshots... But the screen like
gets divided to a lot of small squares (around 10x10px big) which all show
other parts of the window. Everything gets blacks instead of the squares near
the mouse, and the black squares appear as the mouse hovers on them. If I try
to move the mouse directly up, it seems it moves diagonally in the screen. Each
square shows some parts of the desktop, and in the wrong position (the close
button, that should be in the top right, is then in the lower right position),
and some squares are duplicates of the same parts (like I can see half of the
close button in one, another half - in another, and the full button in the
third!). Minimising Wine window doesn't change anything, and the only way to
get back to the normal window is to either press Alt+F4 or manually navigate
the mouse on the close button. It's not even near any playability. I have a
widescreen, ARI Radeon card with fglrx drivers, Wine Config is in the default
options but with Vertex Shader Support set to None, and Pixel Shader disabled.
I'll post Wine output later as I'm now in safe mode...

This is an amateur astronomy planetarium program that uses the QuickTime
libraries to render the night sky.
I am aware that QuickTime has issues about painting the screen black. The
solution to the QuickTime problem is quite well known: Set the Video rendering
to Safe Mode (GDI only).
The above hack solves the problem of QuickTime painting the screen black, but
does not solve the problem of Starry Night painting the screen black.

Lunar Magic, the Super Mario World ROM editor is mostly unusable in it's
current state in Wine. The Level and Overworld views don't show up. You can
see a small space in the top left corner about 3-4 pixels tall that looks like
part of some mangled scroll bars. Mousing over it turns the cursor in to a
resize icon but you cannot resize it.

This bug has been plaguing me for years. At first, it was said to be due to
the buffer underrun error in dsound, but now that the buffer underrun problem
is fixed, I still get the same result.
There is no error message, only warning:

fully supported
and some messages about possible buffer underrun?
trace:dsound:DSOUND_PerformMix Buffer starting or buffer underrun
Solfege is one of the musical "piano" game series, the other includes Angelic
Concert, Symphonic Rain, etc... Because of this problem, the music will not
play, which defeat main game play.
There are no trial version available, is there anyway I can help to fix this
bug?
Please find attached for the full error log.

BabasChess is a FICS (Free Internet Chess Server) interface.
Since upgrading wine from 0.9.57 to 0.9.58 now all the icons or graphics in
buttons don't show. I am still able to click on them and use the program, since
I know the position of the buttons i use the most. Icons that represent status
or other information don't show.
Not all graphics worked on 0.9.57 (ex: smilies which cause crashes, but turning
them off prevented crashes). I would at least appreciate fixing the graphics
problem that occurred from 0.9.57 to 0.9.58 .
I have since reverted back to wine 0.9.57

In regedit, go to HKCU\Software\Wine\Fonts\External Fonts
press F3 and search for tahoma - you may notice the wrong font getting
highlighted as the search result.
In the listview, the registry entries are ordered by the "Name" column in the
following way: A-Za-z. I have about 200 fonts and Tahoma is in the 125th
position.
The code to do the search is in match_item() in
wine/programs/regedit/treeview.c. Adding a debug trace shows it's enumerating
the fonts by the way they are ordered in the registry. As such, match_item
returns 160 and the wrong item gets highlighted.

In this game, the minimap used to work ok. Since three or four wine versions,
the area that should be lit stays gray; the lit portion is offset to the right.
For example, if my troop are in the left corner of the minimap, the lit area is
in the center; if my troops are in the center, the lit area is on the right. If
they are in the center, nothing is lit.
The offset is only horizontal, the vertical position of the lit area is
correct.
On the attached PNG, the bug is clearly shown: allied troops in the left area
should be surrounded by the lit area that is in the center.

Summary: Serious Sam TSE 1.07 - network connection fails

Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-net
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: liquid.acid(a)gmx.net
Hi there,
I recently installed Serious Sam: The Second Encounter for some intense LAN
gaming experience with my friends. There were two linux boxes and 4 windows
boxes, me hosting the server.
The problem was that nobody could connect to the server. Connection attempts
always resulted in the error message "CRC error in DIFF" (explanation here:
http://forums.seriouszone.com/showthread.php?t=8556). This affected both the
windows boxes AND the other linux box.
If a windows box was hosting the server the other windows boxes could connect,
but the linux boxes couldn't (I have to look up the error message there).
The problem isn't related to the safedisc copy protection removal I had to do
to make the game run under wine. We double checked this by applying the removal
patch on the windows server and also on the clients (while the server was
uncracked), no difference at all.
This was all with SS TSE patched to the most recent offical version 1.07.
Now we somehow managed to evade the problem by updating to the public beta
patch 1.50 which let everyone connect to the linux server, again independent
from crack status of the clients. But we soon realized why the 1.50 patch was
marked beta. Network trouble en masse, resulting in highly instable connection,
spontaneous client drops and the server misbehaving (moving around the players
without the client pushing any buttons).
This problem exists both when running the server through wine or natively on a
windows box. Frankly, when running the 1.50 server on a linux box we
experienced fewer problems when running natively (speaks in favor of the linux
network capabilities *g*).
Now I'm asking how to analyze the problem. I don't get any network related
output on the console while wine is running, only a few things about D3D and
stuff, but nothing on network.
Going to attach some in-game logs when I have access to the server box again.
Thanks,
liquid

I tried it, it works in WWIIOnline. Unless it breaks something, I would
consider it a good temporary fix. I suppose the problem might be with games,

The bug works differently for different apps. For example in Raven Shield the
mouse is confined in a small box inside the wine window and will jump off the
wine screen too early and the menus are not usable because you can't click
anything there. The pointer works fine in-game though.
The warping workaround thats committed is not keeping the mouse pointer at the
center in Raven Shield menu, it works with this patch and is not confined in a
box. However in-game it's of course kept at the center but it has it's flaws
too. I can move my mouse fast enough that wine can't get the movement event and
it jumps off the window but it's a minor problem, probably with your patch it
would jump off the screen with lower speed if the cursor is too fast and skips
the few pixels on the sides where it would be warped back.
Your improvement is probably working for some apps but it would need to be a
new value for the registry key so the old "force" would work for example Raven
Shield.
Vitaliy any comments on this?

Hi Vitaliy.
Ah yes - I hadn't thought about edge scrollers.
However, to address your other two points,
1. I haven't noticed any 'sticking' sensation in the games I've tested this
patch with.
2. Never lost the pointer.
Finally, edge scrollers are no good under the current system as it is, if they
have the mouse stuck to center or confined to the window. However, this will
make it somewhat playable if they have keyboard controls to move / pan the
screen as opposed to mouse only control.
It's not a perfect solution (never did I claim this), but I think it's improves
this bug in that it makes apps suffering from it somewhat more playable, and
will not (AFAIK) affect apps not suffering from this bug.

See my previous replies. You can't do that without using DXGrab.
If you wait for mouse to be withing 2px of the border before you warp:
1. You will loose part of the long pointer motion (say 100px while pointer is
10px away from the border). This will be felt like "sticking" mouse in action
games.
2. In 99% cases you will loose the pointer itself (it will go off the Wine's
window). This means number of bad things. The biggest one - Wine won't be
receiving any pointer movement events at all. And nothing will be warping that
pointer.
3. You still not solving the problem with "edge-scrolling" used in some games
to scroll screen when you move mouse "past the edge".

Rasto, Reyn, and others
Can you test the <a href='http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=15638'>patch
I posted in #160?</a> I would like to know if it works in the other games
mentioned (Mount & Blade, RO etc.). It definitely works in WWIIOnline for me.
It minorly changes the mouse warp code so that when warping, instead of warping
whenever the mouse moves slightly off center, it warps when the mouse hits the
edge of the wine screen.
The end result is no more 'stuck-mouse' problem; you have free range of motion
within the wine screen. However, the mouse will still warp if you hit the
absolute edge of the screen.
Is there a good reason why the mouse should be not be allowed to go off center
when warping rather than being allowed to the edge of the screen? I can't see
where it would make a different in first-person views, since the mouse cursor
is hidden. Are there situations that I may not be taking into account?

My donation surely would not be enough to have you code for wine, though.
Rather, it is a way of saying thanks and as a symbolic gesture to show my
support. I donate small amounts regularly to different FOSS projects and
developers.

This is the output from the terminal window
I'm running Ubuntu Hardy Heron and have been updating Wine regularly. The
Rosetta Stone version is 2.1.5.3A. Alas, I still cannot run Rosetta Stone and
was hoping that if I contributed my error messages as well it would provide a
more knowledgeable person with the information they needed to solve the
problem. Attached is the terminal window output after running "wine
autorun.exe" off of the installation CD. Until I figure out how to put two
attachments on a single comment, I will post another comment with the log file
mentioned in the terminal output.
Many thanks,
- Jon
