Summary: AvP1 Demo (Alien): vertical line and flicker artifacts

screenshot from the intro sequence, notice the vertical lines
Hi there,
I've set the component to d3d because that's most likely the thing where the
problem originates problem. I'm not completly sure about it, so if someone can
identify a different component then please switch it.
The problems are visual errors in the old DirectX game AvP1 (the alien demo).
Both vertical lines of different color appear and flickering artifacts. See the
screenshots for a better explanation.
The problem does not only appear with AvP1 but also with the System Shock 2
demo, but there we have some more problems.
The demo is free to download from FilePlanet (you just need a (free) account).
I didn't try finding other mirrors.
I also want to point out that the number of lines on the screen seems to be
related to the overall brightness of the screen content. During the startup
sequence of the AvP1 demo a movie is played, producing a sort of lightning
effect which illuminates the screen and therefore increases brightness a lot.
During this lightning the number of lines explodes.
I'm still trying to capture this, but I'm having a hard time finding the right
moment to take a screenshot.
Tests were done on a i915 with:
mesa-7.0.3
xf86-video-intel-2.3.0

Yes (with 1.0). I should clarify, however, that segfault only happens when you
click on the "Install" label, not inmediately when running Autoplay.exe. My
initial report wasn't clear about this.

This is a pixel shader problem. If you disable the shaders used for skins in

If a programs writes a text to the console when running in a terminal (without
wineconsole), the windows program is expected to output text encoded in the OEM
codepage. The terminal emulator used usually does not expect to get Codepage
437 or Codepage 850, so there should be a conversion layer.
I know that this problem is difficult and maybe unsolvable, as for ouput to
pipes or files you never ever know what the reader of the file/pipe is going to
expect.

Myob plus 11. When installed on F8 several months ago, was working fine. Now
it prints blank pages for invoices and receipts, other Myob features seem to
print. May have something to do with not being able to select print to plain
paper. Application won't allow other than pre-printed forms to be selected
(also new problem).
Tabs don't get selected either unless followed by the space key.
Using F8 with frequent updates, I'm not sure which broke what. F8 or wine
updates, since issue seems to affect several distro's my money would be on a
Wine update.

Actually, disregard what I just posted. I reverted to older nvidia drivers,
version 169.07, and the minimap now works correctly. Most irritating, as I had
to upgrade the drivers in the first place to fix another problem. I don't have
any idea what part of the new drivers broke the minimap, but it evidently did.

That's because of more of similar problems (just found that too when trying to
fix lack of cubemap support checks) :/. CubeMapTest in dsurface.c is another
culprit and also needs to be commented out atm.

Summary: Shiny's Sacrifice (Demo): Too much swap / ulimit problem
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.58.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: loader
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: liquid.acid(a)gmx.net
Hi there,
I wanted to make some D3D/DDraw tests with the demo version of Shiny's
Sacrifice on a system where I don't have root access.
The problem is that the system has 512MB physical memory installed and 8GB of
swap configured. This is too much for Sacrifice and seems to trigger an (32bit
?) integer overflow.
The error message from Sacrifice is:
"Insufficient pagefile space. Please ensure that virtual memory is enabled and
that you have more than 128MB of disk space free on your pagefile drive before
running Sacrifice."
I did a search on Google for that problem and it also appears on Windows if the
system has a large amount of memory (or swap) installed, that triggers the
overflow.
So I was going to use ulimit -v to restrict memory usage by wine, but that does
not seem to work:
user@yui09:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Shiny/Sacrifice Demo$ wine
"Sacrifice.exe"
preloader: Warning: failed to reserve range 00000000-60000000
wine: failed to initialize: /homes/user/local//lib/wine/ntdll.dll.so: failed to
map segment from shared object: Cannot allocate memory
I have tried values for ulimit -v of 64MB, 128MB, 256MB and up to 2GB. Always
the same problem with the preloader and the failed initialization.
Wine doesn't seem to respect the limits set by ulimit. I would really like to
make some tests on this system. Maybe someone can take a look at this ulimit
problem?
Greetings from Germany,
Tobias Jakobi

I asked him a while ago about it, and it seems to me he isn't sure what the
problem is. Since the bug is old, he might have forgotten some details though.

The description of Jakobi's problem sounds very much like the trouble I've been
having for well over a year now.
(My interest extends just to running the dedicated server on the linux box, not
clients, which is why I didn't test any linux clients).

BTW.... try to do it on a CLEAN wine prefix, some native dlls brings problems.
I do use 2005 on a ~/.wine-acad prefix, with just the needed stuffs.

The mem hack patch doesn't fix it I'm afraid..
Have you talked to Thunderbird (Roderick) about this?
I had quite a long discussion with him about it when I first filed this bug: he
seemed to understand the problem pretty well.

Unfortunately AutoCAD 2006 Retail Polish still fails on the .net 1.1 SP1
installation, even with dotnet20 installed. Installing dotnet20 or/and dotnet11
via winetricks does not make the installer happy. I've reported a separate bug,
specifically about .net 1.1 SP1 here #13995 .

Hi Austin,
see this bug:
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10229
Both are somehow connected. Means the connecting problem also appears when not
hosting a dedicated server. Also it's dependent on "intercommunication" between
windows and wine. For example when hosting a non-dedicated server in wine,
another SS client running on wine (and on a remote system) can join the game.
A windows client is unable to do so.
So this is not fixed...
Greets,
Tobias

I was able to install and run Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego usine Wine
1.0
I copied the contents of the cd-rom into a directory, created a virtual drive,
and ran the installer off the drive
The installation went OK
The game started OK, but there was no cursor. This was remedied when I hit the
ALT key. The cursor appeared along with a little icon in the top left corner.
The game now runs perfectly.

glDrawPixels is a very basic and simple call. If it crashes X there may be
little we can do. Although, near this call in wined3d there are comments that
mention a problem somewhat similar to yours (crash and locked X server). They
say this could happen if there is a dib section in certain state associated
with the surface. I don't think this happens in Thief though, it doesn't seem
to do GetDC on surfaces in the menu. Anyways, the hack I'm going to attach
passes memory allocated on the spot to glDrawPixels, so as to ensure everything
is fine with the memory area. If it doesn't help then this probably means
something is wrong with glDrawPixels. Additionally, you could look for some
pure opengl (non-Wine) samples or demos that use glDrawPixels, to test them so
as to see if maybe glDrawPixels doesn't work at all on this machine. From a
quick googling: http://www.sgi.com/products/software/opengl/examples/samples/
seems to have some and there must more around.
Unfortunate that your make test didn't get to the tests I'm interested in (in
dlls/ddraw/tests/visual.c, p8_primary_test). Looks like it's my fault, I didn't
check for cubemap support cap in the test I wrote. I'll fix that. Meanwhile,
maybe you can get past the failure by commenting out DeviceLoadTest() call in
dlls/ddraw/tests/d3d.c?

Game installs fine but when you run it, the copy protection dialogue only
allows you to enter 4 characters per box when it should be 5.
What is meant to happen, as I tested in native Windows XP, is when you type the
fifth character the cursor jumps over to the next box.

Can you check if commenting out some gl calls in
flush_to_framebuffer_drawpixels in dlls/wined3d/surface.c makes any difference
for the crash? In particular, two gldrawPixels calls near surface.c:1224 (it
may cause missing graphics but that doesn't matter).

someone should change the priority of the bug to "Major"
many people could migrate to linux if the would have a fully working winamp

Summary: Warcraft III crashes after memory leak grows too large
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.54.
Platform: PC

Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: ean5533(a)rit.edu
Running Warcraft III for an extended period of time eventually causes the game
to crash. There appears to be a memory leak; periodic examination with "top"
during a run showed the process growing in size over time: virtual 2.6G ->
3.6G, resident 188M - 1.2G.
This happens playing Single Player, LAN, or Battle.net. It happens with both
the newest version of Wine (0.9.54) as well as older versions (0.9.45, maybe
more). Two systems experiencing this error were both AMD64 X2 processors, 2GB
mem, running Ubuntu 7.10 32 bit. One had integrated graphics, the other had an
nVidia 7600GT.
The last few lines of terminal output after a crash:

This is the remnant of bugs previously fixed.
The first problem is that main window stay-on-top function works improperly -
window does not always stay on top. Enabling stay-on-top just makes the window
to appear in front of all windows when restored but it still can be hidden
behind other windows.
The second problem is with smile select form. It appears under message window
instead of above it less frequently than before bug 3997 was closed as fixed,
but still does it.

Hi,
Valgrind gives numerous errors about the 4.0 version reading below the stack.
Is it possible for you to build the 4.0 qpi.exe with debug information and
without optimisation and attach the exe file here?
4.5 works, but still gives similar errors. It looks like the program is buggy,
but happens to work under windows due to the stack layout (i.e. maybe the stack
is zeroed on windows).

Summary: PuTTY: Unable to access right-click context menu
(dogfood)
Product: Wine
Version: 1.0-rc4
Platform: Other
URL: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: trivial
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: audiocheese(a)gmail.com
When running PuTTY in Windows, you can access a context menu that provides
useful features such as the ability to restart or make changes to the current
session.
This menu is either accessed by right-clicking the taskbar entry for PuTTY OR
by right-clicking the window title of the current session.
I believe this bug is present in all versions of PuTTY and can be recreated in
version 0.60.
I have experienced this behavior on Xubuntu 8.04 i386 and Ubuntu 8.04 x86_64
(regardless of the window-manager used).

I'm getting this same graphic error running under wine but not the cedega
wrapped "native" client (That has different graphic and audio issues which
makes wine preferable to me).
In Game:
> If I use F11 or right click and select "Show in map browser" a system to initially open the map browser and I see the random textures. Before loading the random textures it begins to fade in the proper image for the Universe section of the map in before loading a random textures.
> I then press F11 to close the map browser and right-click on random system in a different region than was originally opened and select "Show in map browser" but the map browser does not open (may be a feature of the application idk).
>I then use F11 to open the map browser and the proper image for the region I clicked is drawn as is the proper image for the Constellation.
> Leaving the Map browser open, I then choose a different constellation in the same region and it's graphic is corrupt. I then go back to the uncorrupted region and it loads properly. Any Region, Constellation or System that loads properly once continues to load properly for that session.
So... I do not believe it is a driver issue. It is capable of drawing the
proper texture but it is not able to draw them consistently. Additionally I am
able to still interface with the random/corrupt textures. All textures are
caching properly too (corrupt or not).
Hardware dual nVidia 9600GT SLi enabled
Wine Versions attempted:
1.0_rc4
1.0_rc5
Drivers Tested
171.06.01
173.08
173.14.05
Hope this Helps

Adds ITextServices tests
This patch tests all the features which this application needs for minimal
functionality.
It was submitted to the patches archive:
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2008-June/055755.html
The trickiest function to figure out is the TxGetNaturalSize one. That is
where most of the work for this will be. Not that it is hard to measure the
size of a text string, but the units it uses and how the mapping mode affects
it seem to be critical.

Most Wanted still crashes with varying error messages (mostly invalid float
operation in 32-bit code) and there are fixmes about light in the log.
I couldn't get a +d3d log, because the console gets spammed so hard, that it
slows down the game to something like 0.5 fps...
I simply lost my patience.

Patrick, please post in Bugzilla instead of replying to wine-bugs. Email read:
"Not as big a problem as before now Wine (1.0rc4) will only open the
window of Goldwave.exe in Xinerama screen 0, and if I drag the window
over to screen 1 (right-hand side monitor), then close and re-open the
program, Wine still opens in screen 0 only.
The child window opens, but it's hidden under the main window. In MS
Windows (WIn 98, 2000, and XP) the child window always remained on
top. Not a big issue, really, since I can find the child window by
hiding it and re-showing it (a menu option in this program).
I'm satisfied with the improvements in Wine 1.0rc{2,3,4}, and I also
know that letting my window manager (KDE) manage Wine-opened programs
has been in Wine for several releases now. This bug can safely be
closed.
Thank you for your assistance,
P.Read"

Angus, please post in Bugzilla instead of replying to wine-bugs. Email read:
"You can clearly see in AVIFILE_AddRecord():
1453 if (This->idxRecords == NULL || This->cbIdxRecords == 0) {
1454 This->cbIdxRecords += 1024 * sizeof(AVIINDEXENTRY);
1455 This->idxRecords = HeapAlloc(GetProcessHeap(), HEAP_ZERO_MEMORY,
This->cbIdxRecords);
1456 if (This->idxRecords == NULL)
1457 return AVIERR_MEMORY;
1458 }
1459
1460 assert(This->nIdxRecords < This->cbIdxRecords/sizeof(AVIINDEXENTRY));
This->cbIdxRecords == 0 the first time through and the array gets allocated to
1024*sizeof(AVIINDEXENTRY). Then the assert on line 1460 makes sure we never
go over it. The fix is a simple twist to the logic to realloc instead of
asserting when nIdxRecords gets too big.
Unless this function changes, there's no point pinging the bug to see if its
changed :P"

Yes with 1.0-rc5. I did get farther by following instructions I found here:
http://www.mektek.net/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t74287.html
In particular the command line:
wine MW4.exe -noautoconfig -window /gosnoblade /gosusehw /gosnodialogs
/gosnovideo
The initial crash is avoided this way but there are several other crash issues
in the menus and during play.

Yes, but it has changed a little bit: autoconfig still doesn't work (using
blade.dll), but the game starts without the "/gosnoblade" switch now.
But it still only starts with switches "/gosnovideo /gosusehw", which
effectivly means no videos. Also high detail shadows result in crash during
gameplay.

It's not as severe a problem now: instead of rendering the game unplayable,
minimize simply does nothing, and alt-tab works (sort of) - it doesn't seem
possible to get back to the desktop, only to other applications, while SE4 is
running, as SE4 is always in the background even when I alt-tab out of it.
This is with SE5 1.95 on Xubuntu 8.04.

Last I looked the ping command didn't provide all of the information needed
to implement IcmpSendEcho(), but it's still usefull as a fallback I guess.
It may be worth spending effort to handle privilege issues like this
(binding ports below 1024 and the page zero problem come to mind as well)
with fine-grained permissions, as provided by selinux for example.

Summary: Regression? - Sibelius does not start up anymore
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.46.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: blocker
Priority: P2
Component: test
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: the_gamester28(a)msn.com
Cannot run Sibelius, fails to load. Can however, now run the installer
(couldn't do so before, so had to run from a Windows installation, which worked
perfectly because I don't think Sibelius needs many dlls, but now nothing
starts up at all)

Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: olamedia(a)gmail.com
This is a really very old bug.
In Half-Life(1)/mods, then you settting video mode to using of directx,
resolution is changing, but only for "virtual desktop", and real resolution is
setting to about 640x480. No scrolling is available. Doesn't matter which
resolution is choosed in game.
So this bug restricts to use only gl mode in this games.

Summary: Work folder on ShellExecute and CreateProcess
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.33.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: trivial
Priority: P2
Component: wine-shell32
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: vexorian(a)gmail.com
I used to make some windows app , I tried to make them work correctly on WINE,
noticed gltiches and things that made me unable to use them.
They rely heavily on executing other programs, that's where the problem comes
from, I as a winapi developer made some mistakes that didn't stop the apps from
working correctly in winapi but affected them on WINE.
Specifically the work folder (current directory/directory) arguments in both
ShellExecute and CreateProcess :
- WINE and winapi support ".\\" correctly.
- WINE however does not support "." while winapi does.
- Apparentally WINAPI accepts NULL and assumes it means ".\\" but WINE does
not.
After fixing the code in my apps to use ".\\" there they began to work
correctly, I figured this bug may affect some other applications so I am
reporting it.

Yes, it is. Read comment #2 carefully. I just tested it with rc5 and the bug is
