Summary: Wine 1.0 RC3 freezes Fedora 9 system
Product: Wine
Version: 1.0-rc3
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: mail2hr(a)online.de
This is what i did to install Wine 1.0 RC3:
tar xjf wine-1.0-rc3.tar.bz2
./configure --prefix=/opt/wine-1.0-rc3
make depend && make
# The following four steps are necessary because of this bug:
cd dlls/user32/tests
gcc -c -I. -I. -I../../../include -I../../../include -D_REENTRANT -fPIC -Wall
-pipe -fno-strict-aliasing -Wdeclaration-after-statement -Wwrite-strings
-Wtype-limits -Wpointer-arith -g -o menu.o menu.c
cd ../../..
make depend && make
su
make install
Now if I use this newly compiled Wine my system freezes randomly. Sometimes I
can use wine for 5 minutes or so, but then the system freezes and only a
hardware reset helps.
Using Fedora 8 I have always compiled wine this way and there were no problems
at all. I can not tell whether this is a Fedora 9 or a Wine 1.0 RC3 bug.

joaopa, my fix was rejected in http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11584#c51
I also think this patch is only a temporary solution for those who want to play
the games, but it does not fix the root cause of this problem (one frame is
still rendered wrong).
Proper fix should be included to wine.

new test
This is fixed now, jkupd101.exe runs fine from nautilus thanks to Vincent
Povirk's recent patch to start.exe and I think there was also a patch that
launches a wineconsole if the program being started isn't a GUI app so that
helps with seeing the output of the test program.
That test program wasn't very clear, so I've attached an updated one, but also
noticed that there is a slight issue with Vincent's fix unrelated to this bug
report, so I've opened a new bug for that: bug 13617

Ok you're right, I wasn't downloading anything.
But when I've loaded 6 files with total download speed of 87kb/s (AFAIK I need
to seed to have better speed), CPU usage went up to ~17%-30% right now. It
seems it depends on the download speed, because when it was at 25kb/s, CPU
usage was ~11%-20%.

Very puzzling. I upgraded my computer and installed gentoo 64 bit. The graphics
card is an nvidia. Wine version is 1.0rc2.
The mouse problem is still there, but for me, on this new computer, it's
noticeably less of a problem. the cursor is still slow, but not as slow.
Could this have something to do with misreported/buggy screen resolution info?

The mistake I made is that the bug only rears its very ugly head when you load
Emule and it has to be something like >5 files then the CPU load goes up
exponentially I was reading over 90% on 9 files.
No files downloading no CPU hit.

I'm having the same problem but with a different game. Tabula Rasa also loses
all sound when it loses focus (at least alt-tab) with no other way to get it
back than to restart the game. I have not yet checked if there is a similar
setting for background sound, I will do that as soon as I get a chance and post
if it has a workaround.

Still a problem in WINE 0.9.61. It's not even worth trying to run in in Win98
mode because it both looks distorted, AND it is much slower (almost unusable
for me). I've noticed a similar problem to this in Trillian. Any avatar you try
to use that isn't their default ones will not display for you, but others can
see it.
I wish I could narrow it down, but several of the issues are tied in with
network problems (such as the RAS support issue) and it's all rather confusing
really.

I can report that this bug occurs far more often since RC3.
When I used to try to fire up TF2 with earlier versions of wine, it used to be
started quite often. Now it is almost impossible.

The attached patch implements TransmitFile and TransmitPackets, and fixes the
images in DokuWiki on a Stick for me. If the OP is around, could you test this
patch against your sample program?
Note: I ran the later version of DocuWiki from
http://www.splitbrain.org/blog/2008-05/16-dokuwiki_on_a_stick_2008-05-05 and
didn't run it as root. There is an intermittent bug where the page appears to
not load its stylesheet, but that occurs regardless of this patch, so it
appears unrelated.

Wine output since run untill the error.
Hello everyone! I want to thank you for the great work on Wine first!
Now on the bug:
As of present Warcraft III TFT v1.21b crashes with Fatal Error when I switch
desktops in GNOME sometimes. I usually run it in a separate desktop and instead
of tabbing I use desk switching.
Reproduce like this - run the game in a random desktop, then press Ctrl+Alt and
start pumping left/right or other arrows needed to switch to another desktop
and back to the Warcraft one fast. Eventually it crashes the same way - usually
in a few seconds of fast switching.
Machine 1:
Ubuntu 7.10, 2.6.22-14-generic, AMD X2 5600+, NVIDIA 7600GT, 100% tested and
stable hardware.
Machine 2:
Ubuntu 8.04beta 2.6.24-14-generic, T7100, NVIDIA 8400M GS, tested and stable as
well.
Testing:
Changed NVIDIA drivers to older, newer, diff versions - no effect.
Tried it on both machines - so 2 kernels, 2 cards - no effect.
Started switching Wine versions - problem appears to begin since 0.9.57 through
58 and 59.
No problems prior 57.
Wine output in attachment.

Because then we can put every single bug on the milestone list, after all every
single bug is worth looking at, and we'd all love to fix every single bug for
the next release.
If the milestone list is going to be of any use it should only contain bugs
that have been looked into and have been determined to warrant special effort
to get them into that release, above and beyond the normal level of attention
that any bug already gets.

After the last patch for transparent background of systray icons, the systray
icon for eMule Plus (any version) shows only like a transparent square box.
Before the patch it was a coffe square box on the systray.
In Windows the systray is show as a Mule head with transparent background.
Original eMule (from emule-project) is ok with its systray icon.
Maybe it's the resolution of the icon been used fby eMule Plus or something?.
Right-clicking the square box does bring the correct Menu, so I can say it's
working ok, just the image on the icon is what is missing.
Thank you.

The launcher of Lucasart's Jedi Academy freezes as soon as a button is clicked.
The button doesn't matter: install and exit are equally affected.
When the application is frozen, it is completely unresponsive, doesn't repaint,
and takes 0% CPU. It is killable with the command "killall JediAcademy.exe".
Once the application is killed, the wine processes exit gracefully after a few
seconds.
This bugs happens also with the launcher of Jedi Outcast (which seems to be
roughly the same application). It may affect other launchers of Lucasart games
(not tested).
This bug happens every time.

The Arindal MMORPG-Client (http://www.arindal.com/) works just fine in 0.9.50
when disabling OpenGL in the client, no problems at all.
In 0.9.51, the player, inventory and text-windows disappear and can't be
switched back to appear... This was fixed in 0.9.52 it seems.
But still, there's still a problem displaying the Text-Windows, which should be
left of the game-screen (summary) and in a seperate window (complete text log).
The windows appear correctly, but the text fields seem to be missing.
Latest version i tested this was 0.9.57, where the bug still appears.
If it helps, the client seems to be using wxWidgets and I only tested it on
Ubuntu 7.10.
Attached the log trying to run it in 0.9.57.

If I run Bitvise Tunnelier (Tunnelier.exe, installer can be downloaded from
www.bitvise.com/download-area) in Wine 0.9.53 I get the following problem when
I try to login (establish a TCP/IP connection):
fixme:winsock:convert_af_w2u unhandled Windows address family -1
fixme:winsock:WSASocketW Unsupported socket family -1!
---
This is how Tunnelier calls WSASocketW():
WSASocketW(FROM_PROTOCOL_INFO, FROM_PROTOCOL_INFO, FROM_PROTOCOL_INFO,
&m_protocolInfo, 0, WSA_FLAG_OVERLAPPED);
and FROM_PROTOCOL_INFO has the value of -1.
If you check WSASocket() in MSDN -
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms742212(VS.85).aspx - the 3rd
paragraph of Remarks says the following:
If the lpProtocolInfo is not NULL, the socket will be bound to the provider
associated with the indicated WSAPROTOCOL_INFO structure. In this instance, the
application can supply the manifest constant FROM_PROTOCOL_INFO as the value
for any of af, type, or protocol parameters. This indicates that the
corresponding values from the indicated WSAPROTOCOL_INFO structure
(iAddressFamily, iSocketType, iProtocol) are to be assumed. In any case, the
values specified for af, type, and protocol are passed unmodified to the
transport-service provider.
So, in dlls/ws2_32/socket.c WSASocketW() something like the code following
needs to be added (taking into account that the trasport-service provider
requirements doesn't affect Wine):
if (lpProtocolInfo)
{
if (af == FROM_PROTOCOL_INFO)
af = lpProtocolInfo->iAddressFamily;
if (type == FROM_PROTOCOL_INFO)
type = lpProtocolInfo->iSocketType;
if (protocol == FROM_PROTOCOL_INFO)
protocol = lpProtocolInfo->iProtocol;
}
So you see, it's a show stopper with a very simple solution.
Keep up the good work!
Andrej Andolsek

Yeah there are number of problems with force-feedback. Unfortunately they won't
be fixed for wine-1.0. There are number of things that have to be changed and
those changes are too dangerous while in code freeze.

i dont know to much but i do know gameguard "injects" itself into the windows
kernel drivers and dlls. i can generate a list of every dll (including the
kernel) if anyone wants it. However firstly u cant just compy and past a
maplestory or other game instillation. remove that idea no it doesnt work.
Gameguard installs drivers to a windows instillation without user consent or
knowledge. tht driver needs to be installed in registry and in win32 so the
installer is mandatory. Cedega has a fix to install large EXE's (like
maplestory)so using that to install maple removes that problem but it the
cedega directory need to be imported to wines config file.
low latency kernel support is needed as well, if low end kernel support is not
present gameguard has nothing to inject into.
if anyone wants that list of DLL's and drivers message me

Updating: still present in 1.0-RC3.
I think it's a severe usability problem for users that can't figure out the
workaround, they could think that the entire thing is broken just for a textbox
out of focus :(

To clarify, again:
Automatic resizing of tables was never an issue with the PokerStars client. The
problem has always been when trying to resize a table MANUALLY.
Currently the only way to get tables to resize MANUALLY is to uncheck 'Allow
the window manager to control the windows' in the Graphics tab of winecfg. This
is not an option most users will be willing to do IMO as they will have to
sacrifice desktop integration.
The workaround described in the previous comment is irrelevant, please ignore.

I was setting it so that it's on the list of things to look at. If it gets
deferred to 1.4.0, so be it, but why not have it on the milestone list?

Bug: The make process halts when compiling menu.c, stating that the end of file

other testing of rc3 on my system. All configure and build steps were performed

i'm not sure if the following helps; if not, please ignore (or delete) it.
if gameguard is invoked by the game 9dragons on windows xp, my outpost firewall
provides some details as to which component wants to invoke which other
component. so here we go:
application: services.exe
driver name: usprserv
---
application: gamemon.des
driver name: dump_wmimmc
---
application: gamemon.des
driver name: csrr.exe
---
application: services.exe

hope it helps narrowing down the possible culprit(s).

The error on opening User Preferences also occurs with Notes 8.
Using native oleacc/oleaccrc fixes it, I also need native msvcrt, though.
Otherwise I get the error "err:module:attach_process_dlls "OLEACC.dll" failed
to initialize, aborting".
When replicating, I don't suffer from crashes.

Summary: previously gold application broken (dogfood)
Product: Wine
Version: 1.0-rc2
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: panton41(a)gmail.com

Debug trace
A previously gold application (GURPS Character Assistant 4.0.356) has broken on
1.0-rc2. The program relies heavily on native versions of riched20.dll and
oleaut32.dll, but fails regardless. Otherwise I'm not sure of the problem.
This version of 1.0-rc2 was compiled with the "3dMarks" patch so I could avoid
rebooting to play games on a dual-boot system.

The bug still exists with 1.0-rc2, and has deteorated.
With the previous versions it was mostly portions of the skin in character
window, guild window etc, which were fixed after closing window and reopening.
With 1.0-rec2 it permanently affects name in character window, guild window,
and the text on chats and shops.

Alexandre just committed a patch that removes the warning
fixme:win:BeginPaint window 0x10020 belongs to other thread
so perhaps it's worth retesting.
Also, you can use linux capabilities to allow your app to
ping without being root; see
http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#head-96bebfa287b4288974de0df23351f278b0d41014
We don't have an example there yet, but it shouldn't be too hard to try.
Finally, running any app as root using sudo will
contaminate your ~/.wine directory with files
owned by root, so you might need to delete
your ~/.wine directory or do "sudo chown -R $USER ~/.wine"
to run apps as yourself again.
