Summary: Serial communication not working since wine-0.9.33
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.42.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: blocker
Priority: P1
Component: wine-binary

Logfiles of woring and not workin wine versions
Senn on application Windows Packet Programm the serial communication is not
working correctly since winw version 0.9.33 anymore. It worked perfect with
version 0.9.32 and before. Actually I am running version 0.9.42.
I attached two logs, one with a working version (0.9.32) and one with my latest
version 0.9.42.
You can see, that there is a problem here: io_control 0x7c
IOCTL_SERIAL_GET_TIMEOUTS. At this point the application hangs and you have to
kill it.

Aurel

This looks a lot like Bug 8754. I cant say for sure, since I dont have MotoGP
3, but it seems pretty obvious to me.
Can someone who has this game check that please?
It should still be an issue in current wine (1.0 rc1+).

On the Codeweavers site (or blog) they say they're gonna implement a DIB engine
after they got Office 07 working. Maybe they can give you background
information to get familiar with this... As I see it, it's still gonna take a
while until they seriously start working on it though.

In defense of the devs (and as a software developer myself), it is probably
worth noting that figuring out /how/ to solve a problem like this is usually
many times more difficult than actually programming the solution. If they are
going to tell someone how to fix the problem, they might as well do it
themselves.
Then again, three years is a long time.
Then again again it seems to be a pretty isolated problem that affects very few
applications. Effort was probably more due elsewhere.

In the meantime, you could help by writing conformance tests

Considering there are others who are eager to help correct this issue, it would

Can we get a group of coders together and get this going? I need to get

Well, it seems virtual desktop mode doesn't work well too. Game starts ok and
is playable. If I switch to some other window that overlaps with
Torments'window inside virtual desktop, and then switch to wine's virtual
desktop window again, the overlap area is filled with garbage and game stops
responding to mouse and keyboard presses, although music still plays.
Dragging any window over Torment's window produces just the same result.

In my case, wine 1.0-rc1 runs Torment a bit worse than 0.9.59. It worked fine
in windowed mode with 0.9.59, but with 1.0-rc1 I can hear sounds (main menu
music, button clicks), but the game window doesn't redraw itself and contains
garbage (bits of desktop wallpaper or traces of other windows if I drag them
over Torment's window). The game still hangs up in fullscreen mode. The game
window is redrawn properly if I enable virtual desktop.
My distro is Debian testing/AMD64.

Probably they're running it in the window mode, not in fullscreen,
someone claimed that to be working.
Otherwise it would indeed be interesting.
I'm wondering though if this regression is planned to be fixed for 1.0, or if
it's gonna take another 2 years to do that. ;)

--- Comment #12 from Austin Lund <austin.lund(a)gmail.com> 2008-05-18 02:04:18 ---
I changed the SendMessage implementation to:
HRESULT WINAPI fnTextSrv_TxSendMessage(ITextServices *iface,
UINT msg,
WPARAM wparam,
LPARAM lparam,
LRESULT* plresult)
{
ICOM_THIS_MULTI(ITextServicesImpl, lpVtbl, iface);
switch(msg) {
default:
FIXME("%p: (%s) STUB\n", This, get_msg_name(msg));
return E_NOTIMPL;
}
}
This way I can see what are the common messages that it sends.
Typical output looks like:
fixme:richedit:fnTextSrv_TxSendMessage 0x1c570f8: (EM_SETCHARFORMAT) STUB
fixme:richedit:fnTextSrv_TxSetText 0x1c570f8: partial stub (L"")
fixme:richedit:fnTextSrv_TxSendMessage 0x1c570f8: (EM_SETPARAFORMAT) STUB
fixme:richedit:fnTextSrv_TxSetText 0x1c570f8: partial stub (L"Sign in")
fixme:richedit:fnTextSrv_TxGetNaturalSize 0x1c570f8: STUB
fixme:richedit:fnTextSrv_TxSendMessage 0x1c570f8: (EM_SETCHARFORMAT) STUB
fixme:richedit:fnTextSrv_TxSetText 0x1c570f8: partial stub (L"")
fixme:richedit:fnTextSrv_TxSendMessage 0x1c570f8: (EM_SETPARAFORMAT) STUB
fixme:richedit:fnTextSrv_TxSetText 0x1c570f8: partial stub (L"Sign in")
fixme:richedit:fnTextSrv_TxGetNaturalSize 0x1c570f8: STUB
fixme:richedit:fnTextSrv_TxSendMessage 0x1c570f8: (EM_SETCHARFORMAT) STUB
fixme:richedit:fnTextSrv_TxSetText 0x1c570f8: partial stub (L"")
fixme:richedit:fnTextSrv_TxSendMessage 0x1c570f8: (EM_SETPARAFORMAT) STUB
fixme:richedit:fnTextSrv_TxSetText 0x1c570f8: partial stub (L"Offline")
fixme:richedit:fnTextSrv_TxGetNaturalSize 0x1c570f8: STUB
fixme:richedit:fnTextSrv_TxSendMessage 0x1c570f8: (EM_SETCHARFORMAT) STUB
So it seems the set CHAR and PARA format are the high priorities. But that's
probably good as these just pass the format structures on to the associated
ITextHost implementation that the application implements as far as I can tell.

Hello again,
I've compiled the rc1 from source and successfully installed it (Kubuntu Gutsy
- up to date) the usb serial adapter now works, very well too for a first test.
I have a symlink from ~/.wine/dosdevices/com1 > /dev/ttyUSB0
And that's it - it works! Many thanks to everyone who worked on this, I had a
horrible feeling that the next show I was going to put on would be sullied by
WinXP.
Thanks again,
Ed

However, uTorrent/Windows goes into edit on the name so you can rename it. As

hi Dan!
I've tested your suggested workaround, it works for FlashFXP 3.0.2 (build 1044)
and FlashFXP 3.2 (build 1080).
I've also tried FlashFXP 3.4.0 (build 1145) and the latest version, FlashFXP
3.6.0 (build 1240). In this two versions FlashFXP does not hang up any more,
after getting the Directory List, but it doesn't show the content - only the
"Folder Up" Icon is visible.
I've attached the messages wine dumps in the console - perhaps this helps.
My wine-version is wine-0.9.25 (wine-utils are installed also - both are the
original debian etch packages with Dan's "winetricks cc580" (winetricks is
dated with 20080512)
thanks!

I noticed only now that for this bug:
Severity: minor
It is not true!
It should be normal because playing online becomes almost impossible with this
bug. And most people today play this game ONLY online, because it was more than
enough time (10 years) already to complete single player missions.
And third thing that severity changed slightly for few times in older wine
versions. So maybe on report date it was not so bad like now (look
screenshots).
So please change severity into normal.

I'd say this is now an ex-bug.

Hi All,
Sorry to add to the list of woes! I am trying to set up BSS Audio's Soundweb
designer on a new laptop (acer 5720z) without inbuilt serial port. On my old
laptop (thinkpad 570e) the program runs fine under wine 0.9.25 on Debian Etch
(current and up to date) using the inbuilt serial port with no more
configuration needed than selecting com1 in the soundweb ui. Wine was installed
in this case using apt-get.
On the new laptop - running Kubuntu 7.10 (also up to date and otherwise working
perfectly) and Wine 0.9.46 the program launches as normal - and unless i
symlink /dev/ttyUSB0 > dosdevices/com1 the program quits upon trying to connect
to serial.
When i have the symlink in place and have verified the following:
usb 1-1: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0,
the program will search for devices but return no results. I should probably
mention that the software has a serial connection to one of a network of
devices and usually finds all the devices.
Before finding this bug - I tried compiling the 0.9.25 version on the new
machine with the same results as I get with version 0.9.46
Attached is the result of WINEDEBUG='+comm' wine "C:\Program Files\BSS
Audio\Soundweb\SoundWeb.exe"
It would appear that Bug 7526 is also appearing in the output to my
terminal.(In reply to comment #3)

I'm not able to compile you test application..problem is in fourth argument
which should be (void**). After this modification:
- dib = CreateDIBSection(NULL, &bmi, 0, (void *)buf, NULL, 0);
+ dib = CreateDIBSection(NULL, &bmi, 0, (void **)&buf, NULL, 0);
it works for me on wine-1.0-rc1-g2470b0b (and on winxp of course too)
Did I miss something?
Please check it again with current git.

thought I'd post an update on my battle.net experiences with wine.
0.9.33 - battle.net works:
no background images displayed
text is rendered for buttons and chat text, can choose and join games,
playing works well. very stable.
0.9.46 - battle.net unusable
background images drawn
text is NOT rendered, cannot see chat text or button text, impossible to join
games.
Basically, 0.9.33 works quite well if you are willing to rejoin battle.net once
the screen gets too cluttered with old text

Hack to warp mouse in Gothic 3 with resolution 1024x768
This is just a wee bit modified patch of Denis Misiurca. It makes Gothic 3
fully playable ( I mean mouse problem ) in resolution 1024x768. For different
resolution it must be modified ( If I will have time I will make it)
On AppDB (Gothic 3) I gave simple solution how to apply this without compiling

As Lei said, we probably need a conformance test before we can apply this,
and it needs to be refreshed and sent to wine-patches.

Louis, this hint helped me run the game.
So the game itself comes with SDL.dll which I replaced with the one downloaded
from SDL site. I donwloaded windows binary and replaced it with the one that
came with the game and it worked.
There is now a new issue which makes game to big if you set it up to play in
full screen mode. In windowed mode it worked fine. Also sound plays.
Will add info to the appdb for the game.

--- Comment #12 from Roman Nykyforchyn <loofsoft(a)gmail.com> 2008-05-16 08:37:04 ---
Hi, I found the cause of this issue.
The problem is in wined3d library, in some case we get stack overflow by
calling ActivateContext (context.c) function recursively.
I've fixed this and the changes are:
1) in read_from_framebuffer_texture function (surface.c):
+ if(!device->isInDraw)
ActivateContext(device, (IWineD3DSurface *) This, CTXUSAGE_BLIT);
2) in FindContext function (context.c):
if (wined3d_settings.offscreen_rendering_mode != ORM_FBO) {
/* Make sure we have a OpenGL texture name so the PreLoad() used to read
the buffer
* back when we are done won't mark us dirty.
*/
+ BOOL oldInDraw = This->isInDraw;
+ This->isInDraw = TRUE;
IWineD3DSurface_PreLoad(target);
+ This->isInDraw = oldInDraw;
}
Now I do not have any crashes with Oblivion, exterior scenes work fine with
pbuffer and backbuffer rendering. But I noticed, that sometimes one of the
frames in rendered upside down. This happens only on exterior scenes and on the
same places that were crashing without my fix.
Can somebody take care of this and fix pbuffer and backbuffer till 1.0 release?
This may be good improvement, as pbuffer and backbuffer rendering provides 1.5
times better performance in some games.

Relevant patches already committed by 1.0-rc1, so marking as fixed. Actually
running a program (testing teapot.bb) fails with "Entity does not exist", but
this seems a separate bug, not related to richedit.

When started in a 16bpp X screen, after the music ends the logo is displayed
correctly. Then the "??? Unknown Exception" reported by others appears.
I've also tried wine-0.9.16 in Ubuntu Hardy. It shows a black 16x16 rectangle
in the upper left desktop window, but also errors out later on.

Doesn't sound like a wine bug. The fact is that linux usually uses 24bpp, which
is not a standard depth in windows. I think this should be closed.

Hi all.
Is it really necessary reopening this bug?
I'm using a pl2303 driver (provided with kernel 2.6.21-5) to communicate with
my mobile phone using the Windows software "LG Contents Bank" via Wine.
It's working correctly. I'm able to send and receive data using the software.
To make it works, I've linked com1 to /dev/ttyUSB0 in dosdevices dir. I also
had to edit and recompile my pl2303 driver, because my cable's VENDOR_ID and
PRODUCT_ID didn't match with those registered in the driver module.
I'm using this way since 0.9.49 and it's still working with 1.0rc1

I've reproduced this problem with the latest Wine from Git, and I found that
replacing SDL.dll with the latest version from

This may be the result of a bug in SDL that has been fixed, or it may be
coincidental.
So this might be a dupe (or not).....

At least we find out, that the Sacrifice bug is separate, isn't it?
Hence I'm going to open a own bug for Sacrifice.
( with (export) LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 its the same effect, hence its
rendering dependent for this game...)

Yes, many if not all problems reported here have different origins. You can't
expect a pure gdi app that uses 8bpp DIBs and BitBlt to have a lot in common
with a d3d7 game - Sacrifice, neither can you expect the latter to have much in
common with a modern directx9 game that probably uses shaders (which Company of
Heroes afaik is).
It may be the summary that sounds too general that invites people to dump all
transparency issues to here.
About vesa and nvidia, I have no idea yet. I haven't looked into transparency
problem in Sacrifice, but I did notice that it's not cursor only. Inside the
game there were some units which looked like some of their textures are
supposed to have transparent areas but instead look black. But most likely the
difference in Sacrifice comes from different opengl features exposed by
drivers. This triggers different paths in wined3d and they may have bugs in
them that are otherwise hidden. In particular, presense of
GL_EXT_paletted_texture influences things a lot.
I personally would recommend creating individual bugs for programs like
Sacrifice, because indeed they can't possibly have anything to do with issues
affecting igowin. Those I understand relatively well, but to fully fix igowin
we need either DIB engine or at least a portion of it (8bpp BitBlt) because the
current method through X server is just poorly suitable for it, for all I know.

No, it does need the first page.

I've added this symptom to the workaround page.
I think, though I haven't checked, that a slightly less insecure
workaround is possible; DOS doesn't really need the very lowest
page, so we ought to be able to do
$ sudo sysctl -w vm.mmap_min_addr=4096
and have this still work...

I'm unsure, because I just tested this with the vesa driver. In this game the
bug is still present with the vesa driver, in contrast to my tests with
Sacrifice posted above...

The bug discussed here has (IMHO) little to do with display of cursors or other
graphical glitches in games. It is strictly a GDI issue. If the glitch is fixed
by switching to vesa (which effectively forces software OpenGL rendering), then
it is not caused by this bug. This bug (on igowin) persists even on vesa.

Test on my system:
Changed my xorg.conf so that I used the vesa driver:
No transparency bug present.
Still present with nvidia-drivers-96.43.05
My system:
Set-Up:
Software:
Gentoo, Kernel 2.6.24-gentoo-r8

git yesterday
Hardware:

Whats the difference between vesa and nvidia-drivers? (I know, many things, but
if we ask the question belonging to this bug?)

Looks like there are two problems here:
1. It looks for a registry-key
HKLM//Syetem/Services/Spooler/DependOnService
In windows this is set to "RPCSS" whatever that may be. Maybe wine should
create this key by default, i wouldn;t know. After creating it the installer
gets further
2. Then it pops up a messagebox it can't find wineps.drv
>From the log:
Call KERNEL32.FindFirstFileA(00a550f8
"C:\\windows\\system32\\spool\\drivers\\w32x86\\3\\wineps.drv",00a56e58)
ret=1000
7dbf
0019:Ret KERNEL32.FindFirstFileA() retval=ffffffff ret=10007dbf
After manually creating a fake-dll in that directory it finishes up to the end.
It then tries to start the app, end fails saying some files are corrupted; my
guess would be that's some copyprotection, not sure though. Maybe Detlef could
have a look and make patches, to let at least the installer finish?

This problem also happens when trying to install SpellForce: The order of Dawn.
The installer works to the point where it would start copying files and simply
returns a messagebox with the text: "Incompatible system configuration" and
exits.
I later found some text explaining that it detected a CD error which made it
fail the authenticity check. It works on windows though.
The log mentiones the same ioctl 2d1400 error.
Please let me know if I can need to run additional debuglogs etc.
Thanks,
Frans

Summary: graphical bug with Fluxbox and Buzz Modular Sequencer
Product: Wine
Version: 1.0-rc1
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: minor
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: gimmeapill(a)gmail.com
A graphic glitch was introduced in 0.9.59 and is still present in 1.0.rc1.
It is rather hard to describe accurately: happens only with the application
"jeskola buzz" and with the Fluxbox window manager (installer attached - web
site here: http://www.buzzmachines.com/) .
When the application is launched, every right click moves slightly the window
(approx 5 pixels). This bug didn't happen with 0.9.58, and as far as I can
tell, it affects only fluxbox (under Gnome, everything is fine).
A workaround is to uncheck "allow the window manager to decorate the windows"
in wine config.

It appears to be fixed in 1.0-rc1 with DirectDrawRenderer=gdi! Although
slightly affected by bug #12194. Anyone can confirm?
Broken with opengl renderer though.

Louis,
I installed the MYOB 17 trial, and it behaves exactly the same way on the
sample company data. Difficulty selecting from list boxes, spits out a blank
page from the printer on trying to print an invoice.
I tried also printing one of their "Purchase Orders" which failed, but I was
able to print a card file and an accounts list. Seems to be similar behaviour
in v14.1

Marking fixed, this works for most apps now.
eMule's problem is that it only triggers on WM_SYSCOMMAND, which we don't send.
It can be worked around by disabling window manager decorations and using the
Wine controls instead.

Thanks for help. The solution is almost perfect. Now turning left is ok in
Gothic 3 but turning right is still annoying (spinning around). I believe that
its a bit farther on right ( talking about moved screen or "mouse area") so I
think it should warp a little bit earlier when character's turning on right or
looking down. I can see exactly the edges of mouse working area on left and top
edge but right and down is not visible and mouse disappears. I believe that
it's about 20 pixels. That's why your workaround is working great for turning
left and up but spinning character when down or right. I think if you would be
able to force mouse to warp a wee bit earlier on bottom and right edge then
solution would be just perfect for gothic as well. Thanks

Ultra High VFX / 1152x864 now
Not abandoned, though the issue is mostly fixed now. At "Medium" and "Ultra
High" (and probably High) VFX, there's a sort of glow along the left side of
the screen which probably shouldn't be there. See the attached screenshot.

--- Comment #5 from Scott Ritchie <scott(a)open-vote.org> 2008-05-13 19:22:01 ---
I was thinking about this bug a bit.
The first thing to note is that any solution must respect the fact that we
could have multiple Wine prefixes. Accordingly, just ignoring the
~/.wine/dosdevices folder (or the current prefix) wouldn't work in a good
number of cases.
One possible solution would be to add support to Wine for a file to indicate
supressing the containing folder, sort of like the .cvsignore files. Then we
could put that file into the ~/.wine/dosdevices folder by default, and this
problem would go away.
Alternatively, we could simply have a blacklist of folders stored within a
single file somewhere in the current Wine prefix (or in the registry).
This does open up an interesting new feature (and perhaps vulnerability), as
applications or users could exclude arbitrary directories from being shown by
Wine.
