Inability of X server to switch resolutions isn't wine problem, ergo that
doesn't make a valid wine bug.
But note that this doesn't prevent wine from emulating e.g. 8bpp mode in
directdraw (that's done by inner conversion magic). This is not to say all
games will run, there certainly are bugs that affect some games, but this is
not at all different from 16bit or 32bit games. Unless there is substantial
evidence that multiple games are broken because of a single bug, they probably
all deserve proper individual reports, ideally with links to something
downloadable that can be tested. The mentioned fixme is NOT such evidence. All
8bpp games will print it on 24bpp desktop, but that says nothing about whether
they will work well or not.
This bug isn't good because it confuses newbies into thinking 8bpp mode games
don't run in Wine at all (which is wrong) and presents this as some kind of
single bug that affects all 8bpp games on all machines. In reality it's many
issues affecting specific games. Please open separate entry(s) for specific
game(s) that doesn't run. See my previous comment for the kind of info that is
helpful for fixing this kind of bugs.
Info that is better suited for wine wiki imported to
http://wiki.winehq.org/ColorIndexMode. If you have experience running 8bpp apps
and working around related wine bugs, any enhancements to that article would be
appreciated.

That's too unspecific to fix. That's what IMO you should do: Test with latest
wine; open a bugzilla entry with a descriptive summary exactly stating your
problem (e.g. "Total Annihilation crashes at startup" or "Total Annihilation
doesn't show any graphics" or whatever else you mean by "doesn't work"). Fill
in all report fields you can. Play with various DirectDrawRenderer and
RenderTargetLockMode overrides (see http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys)
and if it changes anything add that info to bugreport. If possible, try to run
some other 2d game demos (8bpp and not 8bpp) on your machine, so as to know if
your problem is 8bpp only or a general directdraw problem on your setup. Attach
+ddraw,+d3d,+d3d_surface wine log. That's the way to have a helpful bug report.
As Roderick said, ignore the 'Cannot change screen BPP from 32 to 8' fixme. It
doesn't mean the game shouldn't run.

PS if I can please put in a plug for this bug, Chinese input on Linux is in a
shockingly bad state right now, despite the numerous input methods available.
Google Pinyin is the only IME that is halfway decent on any platform. Having
Google Pinyin working on Linux would make Linux much more useful to the huge
number of Chinese speakers in the world -- particularly as many (in my circles
anyway) now exclusively use Google Pinyin, and need it to be available on
computers they use. Maybe this is just an enhancement for the wine project,
but it bears a lot of importance for the global expansion of Free software
usage in general, due to the huge number of Chinese speakers in the world and
the speed at which they are embracing technology.

Some programs require changing the screen color depth to 16bpp or 8bpp. If you
are running a 24bpp X session, like 99.9% of us are, the program in question
will probably fail. In the case of the game I've been arguing with, the static
256 color screens work fine, but the direct3d part (the actual game table)
fails and triggers the bug. The attempt causes WINE to throw an error to the
controlling terminal and the window turns all black when there should be a game
screen - this bug is 100% reproducible.
Invalid? Wontfix? Um.. no.

I haven't seen this as a problem for pure cutscenes, but rather for the GDI/NOD
selection screen and the map that is displayed between each mission.

IIRC, Red Alert 1 is doing some whole front buffer locking madness in menus
(and probably other C&C derivative games). It does like 400+ Lock/Unlock
operations in a row sometimes! Probably it just modifies a few pixels here and
there, but in wine, since there's no direct access to screen pixels and no
tracking of what actually changed, this means whole contens are transfered from
/ to screen hundreds of times in a row. That's what I believe creates those
annoying 2-3 second freezes when using menu in Red Alert demo on my computer.
Probably not even fast cpus and video cards with good opengl feature set can
cope with that well.
I don't know about cutscenes. Red Alert demo doesn't have it. Maybe I'll check
out C&C if it's reportedly can be downloadable. It was a cool game :).

Here you are. Created a fresh .wine with todays git, ran the game once before
this log to setup gecko, enter cd-key and adjust display settings.
When trying to display motd, it paints the empty, transparent window and then
hangs. The only thing you can do to make it show some kind of reaction is to
press esc, which just adds a bunch of lines to the console output. I did that
two times while catching this log.

(In reply to comment #19)
> I don't believe this information should belong in a bug report.
>
Neither do I. The bug is confusing and maybe should just be marked as INVALID
or WONTFIX. As it stands, it isn't clear what exactly is it people are
complaining about, so chances of these problems ever being fixed are low.
Wine can run many 8bpp games on 24bpp display (e.g. Starcraft, Red Alert, Total
Annihilation), and even on cheap but relatively modern hardware they often run
very well (e.g. Starcraft is good on Athlon 3200 even in pure software
rendering), so it's unclear what people really try to "work around". Some
particular 8bpp games may be suffering from bugs in Wine code that prevent
them from running. Or from poor performance. If so, clear and concise
individual entries must be opened for such games/apps that crash or have
corrupted graphics etc.

I have a similar problem. I'm running Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 (64 bit), Wine
1.0-rc1, ATi Radeon X1600 Pro w/ fglrx and an AMD Athlon 64 FX-57.
Running SC3.exe with Wine, the program will enter fullscreen mode and alter the
resolution, but will display either corrupted graphics, a blank screen or the
desktop at the altered resolution. The intro music will begin playing, until
any keyboard or mouse input at which point the game will produce the
"exceptional error" message.
I have uploaded a text file with the basic terminal output for such an attempt.
This does not include any debug tracing.

Tested with Trackmania United and Trackmania United Forever.
An analogic joypad can't be used with the game: when pushed left, the game
considers it is pushed right instead, from a certain position.
While using a digital controller on the same device, the problem is the same:
left and right are both considered to be right.
The problem only comes from the 0.9.50, the 0.9.61 still has the bug, and the
0.9.49 works perfectly.

The game software Eve Online starts, displays the loading screen for 1 second,
then crashes.
The terminal output doesn't give any information and only informs me about the
lack of any definition of the "Game Explorer" object :
err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} not
registered
err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc}
could be created for context 0x1
I'm using Debian GNU/Linux Lenny with wine 1.0-rc1, installed using the
following package
http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/archive/ubuntu/hardy/wine_1.0~rc1~winehq0~u…
Note : Guildwars works (with graphical glitches...) with DirectX 9 enabled,
GLSL disabled (for this application only) so I don't think it comes from
DirectX.
The Eve online installation software worked fine too.
I tried using the classic client only and with the premium client. I installed
wine today so I doubt that it comes from any configuration.

Ok, i reinstalled Playonline Viewer and updated it. Though it didn't restart
itself upon exiting I received no error like the one described.
I used wine-0.9.55 since that was the last version working with this app.
I think this bug report can be closed.

This occurs in for example the full version of Ever17,
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=10981
where the intro movie will not start due to this.
A few other Japanese games are affected as well. The common factor seems to be
that the games try to open a .avi or other video file for in-game movies, but
fails. The movie files however work fine if one tries to open them manually in
a media player.

Hi there,
starting the 3dmark.exe fails. The app starts but displays this error message
"3DMark needs DirectX 6.1 in order to run.
Install DirectX 6.1 and try again"
and then exits.
Makes it impossible to use the benchmark (and test wine's DX6 implementation on
my i915 card).
The issue has been reported by multiple testers in the AppDB. This should not
be related to my OpenGL driver.
Any traces from the app you need?
Cheers,
Tobias

Installs/runs fine. But as soon as you click in the image itself to do
anything, I get the Run-time error 13.

Try in current wine. If still an issue, you can use WINEDEBUG=-all to prevent
console spam.

checked lately).
I have verified it using a fresh .wine directory and a new install of Beyond

MS Office 2003 install crash output
Microsoft Office 2003 will no longer install in either Windows 2000 or Windows
XP mode under Wine 0.9.61. I am only trying to install the recommended Word,
Excel, and Powerpoint components. It crashes immediately after selecting the
components and starting the installation.
I tried installing using all built in DLL's, as well as with native richedit
and msxml3, and also the rather complex builtin/native DLL setup I normally use
and it crashed the same way under all configurations (Unhandled page fault on
read access).
And by the way, I've been installing it for quite awhile and never had problems
before. It works great under 0.9.60.
I've attached the console output from the crashes.

Summary: vmplayer crash with wine

Crash logs from wine and vmplayer, including error dialogue pictures.
vmplayer crashes with wine 1.0-rc1. A version of vmplayer can be downloaded
from http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/VMware-Player-Download-28391.html
The following account of the problem will refer to the
vmplayer-crash-logs.tar.gz attachment. In the attachment are the following:
vmplayer-wine-crash.log - wine crash log
vmware-quatre-8.log - vmplayer crash log
pictures of error messages from vmplayer
Note: The wine logs are marked to show when the error dialogues appear and are
dismissed.
Wine correctly installed vmplayer. When vmplayer is run with no arguments it
should bring up a menu asking which virtual machine to run. Instead, the error
seen in vmplayer-error.jpg popups up. After it is dismissed, the program chugs
away for another few moments, then popups up vmplayer-error2.jpg. After
pressing ok, the application crashes.
The wine in question is v1.0-rc1 and was built from source with default
configuration. vmplayer was run using an empty ~/.wine directory.

kludgy. So perhaps LATER we can get these font problems etc.

OK, looking at this again because a user was complaining
that firefox with flash crashed for him in wine,
http://sapincher.livejournal.com/45568.html
Installed both Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 beta with the script
export WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-firefox
rm -rf $WINEPREFIX
export WINE=$HOME/wine-git/wine
/home/dank/wine-git/tools/wineprefixcreate
$WINE ~/installers/misc/Firefox\ Setup\ 2.0.0.14.exe
$WINE ~/installers/misc/Firefox\ Setup\ 3.0\ Beta\ 5.exe
$WINE ~/installers/adobe/install_flash_player.exe
sh ~/winezeug/winetricks -q fontfix corefonts
where install_flash_player.exe is the latest from adobe, 9.0 r124.
Both Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 beta 5 have trouble with the flash
benchmark at http://www.powerflasher.de/bench/
Run it in the browser; on the third test, it does crazy
stuff (negative numbers of lines) and doesn't display anything.
Works fine on native Firefox.
Firefox 3 beta 4 and 5 both crash when they try to display http://heise.de
It's happened straightaway each of five times I tried it.
Doesn't happen on native or on windows.

If you do
wget http://kegel.com/wine/winetricks
sh winetricks dotnet11 wsh56 win2k
the installer seems to finish ok.
You can then try to register it and type in your eval
registration number. That fails, but that's a different bug; the
original one is close enough to fixed for now.

With today's wine and winetricks,
sh winetricks dotnet11 win2k
wine bin/mdac/mdac_typ.exe
wine setup.exe
seems to get past the installer prerequisites. Sadly, the installer
then crashes with an exception just after getting a whole lot of
COMPlus environment variables, and looking at the attributes of
D:\\bin\\GreatPlains.msi.
You can try installing that .msi by itself. It needs wsh56, and
crashes quickly without it (with a big msi backtrace). With wsh56,
it aborts saying "the specified interface is invalid".
Here's an example fragment of the long log before the failure:

> as well?
>
The Oberon/MSN games display the initial page fine now without the need for
native dlls when using wine-1.0-rc1. However, the text for "Get More Games" and
"Enter registration key" appears below their associated buttons! Also, the
"play now" button directs you to a blank page.
Trying with this patch does not help with either of those new issues, but at
least this bug is fixed w.r.t. the start screen not displaying!

When you add the dll files WAVMIX16.DLL and WING.DLL to the drive_c/SIMTOWER
directory the program will start then complain with
This Application uses WavMix16.DLL which has not been installed correctly.
WavMix16.dll must be in the windows system directory:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
and wavemix.ini must be in the windows directroy:
C:\WINDOWS
btw... All of these files are in the locations specifed by this dialog box as
well.
Then next error message that comes up is
WavMix16
GetModuleFileName()=C:\SIMTOWER\WAVMIX16.DLL
The next error message is
SimTower did not detect a sound card or proper sound card drivers on this
system. Do you want to run Yes No.
If you choose yes then the program opens the opening title screen full screen
and does nothing. Had to CTRL+ALT+Backspace out of the program.
If you choose No. Then the program does not start. As expected.

I also have this problem. I have several Fedora 8 32-bit systems with GeForce
4 Ti 4200 cards and the bug is very reproducible on any version of WINE. Did
anyone else notice that the directx level defaults to Directx 6? I have tried
the dxlevel commands but they do not appear to improve the graphics even with
-dxlevel 80 which is appropriate for a GeForce 4 Ti card. I use the
kmod-nvidia-96xx driver and WINE 0.9.58. I also experience discolored textures
and a short draw distance for any movable objects. The problem appears in ANY
Source based game. Was anyone able to find a fix for this?

Still happening with Fedora core 5 and wine 0.9.61 compiled from source.
WXtide32 starts up VERY slowly compared to when using previous versions ov WINE
(0.59 & before).
Also, compile of WINE 0.9.61 using ./tools/wineinstall never really finished
(never had a problem up to & including 0.9.59)
The eror reported towards the end of the install was:
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x601dca80 "exception.c:
vectored_handlers_section" wait timed out in thread 002f, blocked by 0009,
retrying (60 sec)
^C wouldn't kill it, I had to close the window.

Summary: libGL not found and openGL disabled, but the library is
there.
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.61.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: winex11.drv
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: yochenhsieh(a)xuite.net
I have the following error messages when running winecfg for the first time to
create .wine directory:
err:wgl:X11DRV_wglGetProcAddress No libGL on this box - disabling OpenGL
support !
However, I have ati 3d driver installed and linux native 3d games work fine. My
Xorg is 6.8.2, and I have these files linked to /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2:
/usr/lib/libGL.so
/usr/lib/libGL.so.1
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1
I've tried the packages built for my distribution, and built wine on my own, --
all results same errors.
