Oddly, there is a file of the same name on the CD that does. It's a different size, though. And what do you know... running with WINEDEBUG=warn+heap, that file just grows forever until you kill the installer, and if you hexdump it, it has a whole bunch of 0x55's and 0xaa's in it. Sounds like a bug... though I don't know if it's in installshield or in wine. Time to run it under valgrind, I guess. I have tried different combinations for the DirectInput entry in the registry but either I have not stumbled upon the correct one or there is another issue preventing the working of the buttons. I have tried the joystick and the evdev approach, none work for the buttons. I tried wine-test and according to it the gamepad is ok (buttons work) I also tried with a different generic usb gamepad and still no buttons were recognized in the game. However, some applications crash on startup if axis mapping is enabled, AND "POV" is mentioned somewhere. I'm using Thrustmaster USB (2960623) joystick. for jstest device information see jstest_info.txt. Under wine device feels different: joystick seems to have different sensitivity and small unexpected deadzone (which doesn't exist on windows). Without axis mapping joystick seems to work mostly fine, but joystick hat is being mapped as axes, not as Point-of-view control. dinput_test works normally and reports 2 failrues (see dinput_test_normal.txt for log). When I try to use following axis mapping (to make hat work in IL2): "X,Y,Z,POV1,Rz", dinput_test crashes on second test and hangs while printing backtrace. see dinput_test_crash.txt. For dinput and trace debug data see dinput_test_trace.txt (Aquired using "WINEDEBUG+=trace,dinput wine dinput_test.exe.so joystick") With this mapping Flatout 2 crashes after intro movies. see flatout_2_crash.txt With this mapping IL2 works fine, but doesn't recognize hat controls anyway. With another mapping: "X,Y,Z,POV1" dinput_test crashes in the same way. see dinput_test_crash2.txt for details. As can be seen on the photo, this keyboard has a "zoom" slider, which is exposed to the computer as a joystick. When I'm running the dinput tests with WINEDEBUG=warn+heap, and this keyboard/joystick is plugged in, two tests, device.c and joystick.c, outright crash, due to accesses at address 0x55555555 (magic value indicating an access to uninitialized allocated memory). These two tests have been consistently crashing since around november 2007, when I started running "make test". I mentioned this problem as part of bug #9916 ("make test usually fails"): http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9916#c27 At first, I tried debugging the issue on my own: * I have already submitted a patch for improved traces in dinput, which Alexandre committed as efc81cb233538ba72198ea9b80b160abfa0e8ecc on 2008-01-02; * I added a couple of printf (number of axes, number of buttons) to alloc_device in dlls/dinput/joystick_linux.c. but I came up to nothing interesting. Several interesting facts about the keyboard: * on this computer, a laptop Core 2 Duo @ 2 GHz with 2 GB of RAM running SimplyMEPIS 7.0 (kernel 2.6.22.x), the keyboard has 37 axes and 37 buttons (?!); * on another computer, a laptop Pentium 4 @ 2.6 GHz with 512 MB of RAM running SimplyMEPIS 6.5 (kernel 2.6.15.x), the keyboard has 37 axes and 7 buttons (?!); * on both computers, I have to unplug the keyboard if I want games such as PlanetPenguinRacer and Nexuiz to be playable. Otherwise, the penguin strongly drifts leftwards (PPR), or the weapon drifts up-leftwards very fast (Nexuiz). => there's certainly another problem outside of Wine (the kernel, since Wine uses the kernel API, and the number of buttons reported has changed between 2.6.15.x and 2.6.22.x ?). But still, the dinput implementation should try not to crash, even if it's fed up incorrect data - that's the reason of me opening this bug here. To help debugging the Wine part of the issue, I can * try patches that would be provided to me; * run executables on Wine and native Windows. Both laptops still have the Windows XP (1 Home, 1 Pro) that was on the HD when I bought the computers. I never installed the suite of Microsoft programs that would enable the Zoom slider. The game has version number 1.0 and crashes when running the engine in D3D mode. Software rendering works and also results in a smoother input in the menu, but graphics are really ugly. So, anyway I can manage to start the game in D3D mode, and the intros, etc. play. But this is really slow and the "client.exe" (main engine executable) consumes 99% CPU time. I can get to the menu of the game, but after selecting campaign and difficulty level the screen stops updating and I have a crashreport on the console where I started wine from. Going to attach the logs. I have made one log when trying the game with D3D mode, and two logs in software mode (both low quality and high quality). Not much console output difference there. This means that in some cases serial events are not reported to the calling Windows program (even if in practice they could be) leading to application malfunction. The problem is in the sanity check: if ((status = get_irq_info(fd, &commio->irq_info)) || (status = get_modem_status(fd, &commio->mstat))) goto out_now; which bails out and silently returns 0 if low-level Unix kernel driver for serial device doesn't implement TIOCGICOUNT or TIOCMGET ioctl()s. This is, in fact, intended behavior if the calling program wants to monitor events like EV_BREAK, EV_ERR or EV_CTS and friends (otherwise, Wine will loop forever in wait_for_event()) but is useless and even harmful if the event in interest is EV_RXCHAR or EV_TXEMPTY. In latter case the check just prevents the program from working correctly. I've came across this bug when trying to make control software for AnyData CDMA modems (EasyWirelessNet 1.00.xx) working. In Linux, those devices use "option" driver, which lacks TIOCGICOUNT ioctl(). The trivial patch is attached. And indeed, it doesn't even start. I get some very high pitched sound distortions after the loading screen ends. The usual background hum continues, but all I see is a black screen. Sometimes I see a dialogue box for some milliseconds, but that's all. Now wine consumes a huge amount of CPU and sometimes doesn't even let me switch to other applications (currently virtual desktop is on) and even VT switch is impossible. I have put wineserver -k on a ACPI event button, this is the only way I can kill wine after SS2 fucks it up. The only thing I can select is a DirectDraw renderer. I'm going to create some ddraw traces, maybe these have additional informations. BUT the game seems to use d3d calls (the d3d trace grew quite large). Oh yes, I have added the safe_texture_manager stuff to the cam.cfg, according to board postings on the net this should reduce some problems on windows as well. But it doesn't really make any difference here, I also get a black screen without the config modification. After upgrade to 0.9.59, the clone/heal tool in Photoshop CS no longer worked as before. Using Alt+click to set clone/heal source would not be honoured and a dialog would apppear indicating that a source had to be set. First, it was suspected that somehow the Alt key had become re-associated with moving a window. But checking of the windows management settings and Compiz indicated no such problem. Interestingly, disabling Compiz cured the problem - though screen updates became very sluggish as the clone/heal tool was moved around. Begain to suspect that it was Wine, since this was the first time I'd used Photoshop since the upgrade. That will be variable shared between all the processes runned on the same wineserver. I think name like async_key_state_table would be nice. Then we have to add changing async_key_state_table in KEYBOARD_UpdateOneState body. I tried it out recently with Troopmaster 2008 (version 4.00e) running on Fedora 8 wine-0.9.58-1.fc8. I also tried the more recent wine-0.9.60-1.fc8 from "updates-testing." It "almost" works, but I'm seeing what I believe is the same scenario described by the original bug report: 1) Start troopmaster with "dot net" enabled 2) Database is downloaded from FTP site. (Focus moves to "download" window") 3) Download window closes, but focus never returns to original window. Usually I download precompilated wine for Ubuntu 7.10 AMD64, but 0.9.53 version I wanted to compile using specially for Ubuntu 7.10 source. sudo apt-get -b source wine It was good! Because precompilated wine was compiled with old nvidia driver, and my Morrowind game was with bad pixel-shadered water in Ubuntu with this. Apt wants to delete nvidia-glx-new, because one of the dependences is nvidia-glx-dev, not nvidia-glx-new-dev, but I forbid this. But error was with nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-new. I see some bugs of the compilation! For exsample, 5-10 input/output errors of bison, and in the end of compilation was many nvidia-glx(-new) errors: dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: diversions involved - output may be incorrect diversion by nvidia-glx to: /usr/X11R6/lib32/nvidia/libGL.so.1.xlibmesa dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: diversions involved - output may be incorrect diversion by nvidia-glx to: /usr/X11R6/lib32/libGL.so.1.2 dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: diversions involved - output may be incorrect diversion by nvidia-glx to: /usr/lib32/nvidia/libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa and etc., because Ubuntu AMD64 haven't this files in lib32 directory! nvidia-glx-new have really bug, because I see some lines in water then playing Morrowind. I don't know, was it in older versions, because in older versions I don't saw pixel shadered water. If I compile wine with old version of nvidia driver, I don't see water again! I installed my new wine. Then I type winecfg, he spoke: wine: creating configuration directory '/home/zenitur/.wine'... Could not load Mozilla. HTML rendering will be disabled. wine: '/home/zenitur/.wine' created successfully. Why?! May be, I have not some dependences? I install it all from wine_0.9.53~winehq0~ubuntu~7.10-1.dsc. Installations of many programs was good, but installation of program was in RAM after installation, I need restart. This bug was only if I use not precompilated wine. But I can play Morrowind normally in myself compilated wine! New button "Control Panel" in audio said me in fixme error window: "Launching audio control panel not implemented yet!". I don't saw this button in oldest versions of Wine, and don't know, work this in normal compilation, or no. May be, it all bison's errors? I can't download precompilated deb, because have not money and I'm using GPRS. In all versions of wine I need add russian Tahoma font. Morrowind can't run main screen if I use native windows quartz. Only in Ubuntu version of wine I need add /media/cdrom0 in Drives in winecfg, and can't run wine with sudo! In one moment of playing Morrowind I was attacked with invisible monster. I have screenshots of spell on this before my death. I don't know, was it bug of wine or bug of game. Game have many bugs in windows too: in one game one of main character dissapear. He was not invisible, but he can was in any of walls. Game save fails. I can pay $20-$100 to developping of wine. Can you make better the Morrowind game? Thank you for wine! The apps work, then, but the system is quite slow and, even after closing any wine app, both of them continue to stay at 100%. I've noticed it happens while installing the app and continues. You can kill them, but launching any wine application (also winecfg) will re-bring them at 100% and you have to kill them because they continue also after closing the programs.
