The patch lets make my game work (The Sims Pet Stories).
But there are graphical bugs when moving characters and some elements that are
displayed as squares and other strange behaviours, which makes the game
difficult to play!
I will also attach a debug log!

All patches above didn't work even after porting to wine 0.9.60.
Any new workaround? This bug is realy annoying.

Readtex is simply broken in these games. Actually seems to be broken in
Geforce6100 as well! I filed bug for that:
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12890
It appears to do nothing at all, which may be why it doesn't hang for you, or
it could be that opengl call sequences that happen in readdraw but don't happen
in readtex mode cause the hang, I don't know.

I don't know about the program Renu Raiput is using, but this bug seems to
affect column width in other programs as well. When I open a program like
utorrent or mIRC on wine I can't resize the columns. In mIRC once you join a
channel you see a list of members on the right, you can't change the width of
that column, and in utorrent you can't change the width of the columns showing
the torrent information, like torrent name, speed, %completed...

richedit: Add tests for EM_FINDTEXT in 1.0 emulation, make them pass under Wine
EM_FINDTEXT and EM_FINDTEXTEX have different rules for interpreting ranges for
1.0 and 2.0 modes:
In 1.0 emulation cpMin > cpMax is invalid and always fails.
In 1.0 emulation, search is always done between cpMin and cpMax, even backwards
search.
In 1.0 emulation, cpMax == -1 assumes FR_DOWN, even if not set.
This goes a long way towards resolving richedit search problems exposed by test
app. Patch already sent to wine-patches.
Changelog:
* Add tests for EM_FINDTEXT in 1.0 emulation, make them pass under Wine

Looks like a different problem.
We need a symbolic stack dump from that assertion failure to diagnose it.
Can you install the debugging symbol package for wine?
Or, failing that, build wine from source?

Trying to install Brothers in Arms - Earned in Blood under Windows 0.9.60
Fedora 8/64 RPMs. (With raven-shield DINPUT patch)
Installation works just fine.
When I try to launch the game it claims that a reboot is required.
When I try to call wineboot, I get a crash.
I'm currently trying to simulate the crash using the demo.
(Doubt it - I have a feeling that this crash has something to do with the copy
protection...)

text file of wine output / backtrace
NS9 would not install on my SuSE 10.3 64bit installation. I would very much
like it to work. It will not work in wine OR crossover. NS9 is one of the LAST
programs I need in order to migrate over to Linux.

Can you try SIGABRT?
About the memory - I don't think those parts which are affected by readtex vs
readdraw do anything with the memory amount number (checking or anything else).

I figured out what works with this patch. Looks like Play the World works as
long as it is installed off the Civ3: Conquests CD. If I install off the Play
the World disc and then patch up to 1.27, it doesn't start and crashes. Also
Conquests crashes when attempting to start. The original Civilization III
crashes as well when you try to start it. The crashes are obviously all
happening when using the no CD patches for the programs since wine doesn't seem
to be able to deal with the copy protection on the discs yet.

Anybody still interested on this bug, apart from me?
A bunch of patches to implement proper CR/LF behavior were now committed to
current git. The app is now supposed to behave properly. I will keep testing
and possibly mark this bug as fixed.

Could you check whether this bug still applies to Wine 0.9.60? The opengl pixel
format code has changed a lot. We used to be limited to a single pixel format
and we support dozens these days (depending on the used display driver). Our
previous single pixel format didn't support PFD_SUPPORT_GDI because this flag
is mutual exclusive with double buffering which you need in general.

Summary: Paint Shop Pro X not installable because of next-button
stays greyed out
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.47.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: wine-comctl32
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: jr98(a)gmx.net
When you try to install PSP X (10.0) you can't get past license agreement
screen,
because the next-button is disabled and doesn't change when you check the
accept box.
My first guess would be window messaging problems.
On Windoze, the Button becomes active when you scroll to the bottom of the
agreement and check the box.
The cancel (and after that, the finish-) button is invisible, but gets drawn
when you click in the right place.
err:msi:deformat_environment Unknown environment variable L"ALLUSERSPROFILE"
err:richedit:ReadStyleSheet ReadStyleSheet: skipping optional destination
err:msi:ITERATE_Actions Execution halted, action L"LicenseAgreement" returned
1602
This is the only possibly relevant output, last line after you clicked cancel.
Anyone think it's a good idea to suggest this for 1.0?
PSP is pretty popular, it has some functionality gimp hasn't and most people
can't afford Photoshop.

Moray 3.5 is probably crashing due to the program hard-coding addresses it
expects on Windows. In other words, it's not getting the expected pointer
address or HWND from wine's winproc and so it tries to access the wrong memory
for creating a window and gets a null pointer exception; it could be an
application bug, not a wine bug.
Winproc is in wine-source/dlls/user32/winproc.c and that might be a good place
to start. wine prior to version 0.9.15 would let you run native user32 (and I
believe now that is what I was doing) and then Moray would work (sometimes).
Whether or not it would work would depend on where it was loaded (virtual
memory layout) since the address changes under linux. The (now old and clunky)
workaround was to have wine<0.9.15 users disable exec-shield and selinux. The
new wine does not require you to do this. On the other hand, you cannot use
native user32 anymore.
At least this is my estimation of the problem based on what I have read on the
web.

yes, comment #6 mentions Bug 11626 that has a link to the download, I'm not
sure that adding the key changes anything, the crash still occurs with these
two commits.

On Thunderbird's advice I tried readtex mode a while ago, and got what you
describe: in game menu not drawn, but input still works and you get back to
game.
The hang truly is a hang: freezes X for a time, before I can bring up a
terminal and kill it. Never responds to input again, and no sound/video.
I'll plug the old card back in and get you a screenshot.
I have 256mb AGP aperture size set too, but I meant the card's onboard memory:
doesn't wined3d make an assumption somewhere like 32/64mb?

--- Comment #5 from Aleksander Adamowski <aleksander.adamowski(a)olo.org.pl> 2008-04-28 16:05:23 ---
OK, I've found out that setting my locale to pl_PL like below will change the
Wine's behaviour so that it will put "1250,852" into that registry key by
itself with every launch:
LANG=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_NUMERIC=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_TIME=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_MONETARY=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_MESSAGES=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_PAPER=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_NAME=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_ADDRESS=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_TELEPHONE=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_IDENTIFICATION=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_ALL=
I consider this behaviour highly counter-intuitive. I would expect this
registry setting to be preserved by Wine whenever I change it manually, not
overwritten based on values of my environment variables.
Is there a bug covering that?

Tsarouchas, what was the detailed solution in your case?
I have a similar problem:
1) I try to run the installer for the app "PITy2007ng" (pity2007ngsetup.exe)
from over here: http://pit.dobry.pl/index.php?plik=pliki
2) In the welcome window, I can see that the polish characters are messed up. I
close the application and try to locate setting that control the code page for
non-unicode apps.
3) I run ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/regedit.exe and locate the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Fonts\Codepages. It has the value "1252,437".
4) I change the key to the value "1250,852" - those are polish codepages.
5) I navigate to a different registry branch, then back to Codepages to make
sure that my change is preserved - I can see it is (the "1250,852" value).
5) Keeping the regedit window open, I launch the installer again:
wine ~/soft/pity2007ngsetup.exe
6) The fonts are still messed up. When I go back to the still open regedit
window, I can see that the Codepages value has reverted to the default:
"1252,437"
Is there a way to force Wine to use a particular codepage at all?
My locale is (yes, it's deliberately United States, but it shouldn't influence
encodings? locale isn't meant for this...):
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

I was trying to discern what the problem was, the program's, wine's,
misconfiguration, etc. Now we know the demo doesn't show the problem. Hopefully
someone will take this up, but it's obviously not uber high importance...
Can you try the demo on WinXP and see if it looks okay for you or is distorted
like mine? It may be a driver issue, etc.

Still present in wine git 0.9.60.
The analysis in a previous comment still stands. However, the supplied patch in
this bug report is not adequate anymore. I have prepared a set of nine patches
that implement CR/LF encoding support for richedit 1.0 emulation. If those
patches are committed, this bug might get marked as fixed.

Adding myself to CC.
There are still more problems with PTE. For some reason, builtin richedit does
not highlight the URL at the end of the README text supplied with the program.
Also, a crash occurs when closing the last window tab without exiting the
program, but this occurs regardless of using native or builtin richedit.

Summary: Wine complains it cannot preload memory, runs fine
though
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.59.

Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org

Wine complains of several errors when starting, although these seem trivial and
Wine runs fine, this might indicate a bigger problem.
The errors:
preloader: Warning: failed to reserve range 00000000-60000000
and
err:dosmem:setup_dos_mem Cannot use first megabyte for DOS address space,
please report
Full log is attached, but it's just these two errors repeated several times.

Private cursor movement during WM_SETTEXT should *not* cause sending of
WM_NOTIFY events. Test included.
As text is inserted, the cursor is moved to the end, and then back to offset 0.
This is an implementation detail, and should not result in WM_NOTIFY being
sent, except when previous selection was other than (0,0), in which a single
WM_NOTIFY is sent for the movement to 0,0. Test included.

WM_SETTEXT should clear modify flag before sending WM_NOTIFY events. Fix for
crash 3 of 3 caused by richedit.
As in the description, WM_SETTEXT is supposed to clear modify flag, but sent
the WM_NOTIFY event of selection change *before* clearing the flag. This
difference caused crash #3.

After fixing the RTF stream issue, there is also a problem of the absence of a

with multiple rows. Attached patch fixes this issue. Already sent to
wine-patches. Waiting for approval of this patch before marking this as fixed.

I'll see if I can tweak my integrated card's video apperture size in bios,
maybe it will make some difference.
We need to clarify what kind of a hang exactly it is. I assume it isn't a total
system freeze, but it is game's process that hangs. Are you sure it really
"hangs", or maybe just stops updating screen properly? I've seen this on
geforce 2 mx in thief and system shock 2 menus - there readtex mode is broken
for some reason and when i press esc i draws nothing except a still image of
last frame the game rendered. So it appears kind of hanged. But another esc
resumes the game. So it isn't really a hang, it's just that menu drawing fails
to actually update the screen. Are you sure you are not experiencing something
like that? You can run the game so that you get +d3d, +d3d_surface output to
the terminal, then watch if it actually stops when they game appears to hang.
AFAIK there isn't much places in wined3d where it can actually hang (as opposed
to fail to draw things). If it does get stuck in a loop or something like that,
then try sending SIGABRT signal to the game's process - maybe will force it to
show a backtrace that may help to understand what function did it get stuck in.

Could it be a memory management issue: the card I have has only 16MB RAM.
I noticed some funny behaviour in thief 2 with it, where on switching back from
the menu, the game would hang for 30 seconds, and then resume rendering with
corrupted textures (all white with regular black blobs!).
There's a memory management config hack I can try.

Picture of the described DropDownFIeld
When you activate the Layermode-Dropdownfield in the "Layers"-Palette you can
change the displaytext in the DropDownField with the arrow-up and -down keys
but the layermode won't get executed.
If you click in the DropDownField however and select it with the Mouse it
changes the displaymode normally.

Ok so it looks like the issue is remaining. For some reason the app tries to
accept on a socket of -1, without trying to listen to any socket first. I've
never seen that one before.

For info, I get the same issue.
Ubuntu - Hefty Heron
Linux 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP i686 GNU/Linux
Wine 0.9.59
CNC3
Right click on set-up.exe -> open with Wine
(I had a previous intsallation of cnc3, so I get taken to the modify or remove
menu, rather than the option to install fresh).
Select remove for a clean start, which completes ok
Run setup.exe again, but still only get the modify or remove menu
Select modify/next and get the components page
Core and Language, English are already ticked by default
Hit next, gives the error that you must select at least one language.
Try all three options (install, on demand, don't install - instal entire
feature is ghosted for everything) on any of the modules, no difference, still
stalls on the error.

No. To apply patches, you have to be in the wine source

OK, setting category to ole. Can you upload two more little
apps for us? First, your original 'bad' native case, but
noninteractive, i.e. no buttons -- it should just dive right into the problem
case without any user interaction.
Second, same thing, but with 'as integer' to prevent the crash.
That should make it easier to compare logs.

Ok, the problem is around there.
It's not itself that it returns or not a value, but that the function has a
return Type instead of default "Variant".
Adding a "As Integer" to the Function solves the problem.
Function TimerProcFunc(ByVal HWnd As Long, ByVal uMsg As Long, ByVal nIDEvent
As Long, ByVal dwTimer As Long) As Integer
My best guess is that Wine is somehow failing when the return type is Variant.

Dan Kegel, using TimerProcFunc as Function without return value works pretty
well on Windows, even if the code may be faulty, it executes ok on Windows.
Anyway, I'll test it out and I'll let you know if it solves the problem or not.

Can't reproduce this on geforce 2 mx. Menu doesn't draw with readtex mode on
that card though. One possible way to find the cause of hang would be to 1)
first use git-bisect to find why it was dying at startup in 0.9.29 2) Then, use
git bisect again to find what cause Thief to hang (applying fix for death at
startup if needed).
BTW about GL_EXT_pixel_buffer_object, actually it seems to be not that certain
that this particular extension is causing a hang. And, unimplemented support
for an extension isn't likely to cause a hang anyway. Such a thing would be
more likely to cause bad performance or missing graphics, but not a hang.
Commenting out extensions present in newer hardware but missing in the attached
tnt2 glxinfo didn't seem to make much difference.

I probably shouldn't post this, but if I don't it will just gnaw at me.
Apologies in advance if this comes off badly, but this has to be said.
Ok, look.. This is isn't 1990 anymore, it's 2008. In the 18 years in the
interrim, the vast majority of users have upgraded and aren't stuck with little
4MB Trident cards and 13" monitors anymore. Hell some peoples' machines are
new enough that they are incapable of even running in 8bpp mode anymore (like
Penelope's laptop). Technology moves on but gameplay doesn't change much once
you hit a certain point. Just because the software is old doesn't mean it
should be thrown out - it's still fun and it should still remain playable.
I just checked before committing this post, and my copy of WINE has options to
simulate just about anything from Windows 2.0 to Vista, and at one time could
actually do these 8->24bpp translations and properly display them. That this
fails to work now (and in MS Pinball, results in a black window) means this is
a *WINE* bug.
Yes debugging takes effort - we all know this. Yes the developers are probably
un[der]paid - we know this too. Yes it takes time out of one's schedule - we
know this as well. Yes *some* users could learn to code and theoretically fix
bugs themselves, but most of us don't have the aptitude.
Can we please stop suggesting unworkable workarounds, stop putting it on the
user to fix the bug, stop blaming X, or the games in question, or
$some_random_library, or the user, and just get someone to FIX THIS already?

I don't think this is a problem with wine. I'm pretty sure this is the result
of not having 8 bit colour resolutions supplied in your xorg.conf therefore
xrandr can't change to your 8 bit colour resolution because you haven't set
one.
I don't think this is a problem either because the games i have that bring up
these warnings still run absolutely fine. I think if these games still run for
all of you then someone should change the severity to minimal and turn priority
down?
Your fix probably comes with adding 8 colour bit resolutions to your xorg.conf

Yes, this still occurs with the latest wine, with one slight change. Instead
of fixme:font:CreateScalableFontResourceA, Rosetta Stone now gives off
fixme:font:CreateScalableFontResourceW.

Hi,
I've tried to use a Win32 Console App (rdb.exe Novell remote debug client) from
my SuSE 10.3 box running Wine 0.9.60, and got this:
fixme:resource:FormatMessageA line wrapping (40) not supported.
After this message I got another error in a GUI messagebox:
http://www.gknw.net/test/wine/wine_rdb.jpg
If needed then you can obtain a copy of the program together with some
screenshots from here:
http://www.gknw.net/docu/rdb/rdbtools.zip
Unfortunately it might be required to have a NetWare server to connect to in
order to check further....
So if someone wants to look closer at this issue please contact me, and I will
try to give you access to a test server.
thanks, Günter.

Oh your patches better get checked in for 1.0. I actually patched my wine and
ebuild with your patches. I fired up Civ3, Play the World and Conquests. I
haven't gotten Civ3 or Conquests to start without crashing. None of them start
with the CD either. I tried no CD patches on all of them and magically Play
the World actually started!!! I'll see if I can fiddle with the others to see
if I can get them to work but I was actually playing Play the World last night
for a few hours with a fair number of minor glitches and it was a little slow
but it was working for the most part until I was going to get a leader after
taking over a city. Then the game crashed saying it couldn't find the ancient
leader ini file. I think there's a problem with the installation of the game.
It doesn't seem to be installing all the files. At any rate, good job! I hope
we can get other fixme problems fixed in regards to Civ3 as well.

The official example here,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/180736
shows that Sub is the right way to do it, not Function.
Maybe the problem is that in functions, you're supposed to return a value.
Try returning -1, e.g.
TimerProcFunc = -1
at the end of the function?

The problem in that screenshot also affects WMP. To reproduce:
wget http://kegel.com/wine/winetricks
sh winetricks wmp10
Run wmp. Note that it has a frame around the whole app
when it shouldn't, just like that screenshot of MSN Messenger.
Affects multiple popular apps, really annoying, probably easy ->
nominating for 1.0 (ok, this is a bit late, but hey).

To apply wine patches like that, you want -p1, not -p0,
and you want to be in the wine source tree top directory
(the one with 'tools', 'dlls', 'include' subdirectories).

only about the following points :
1) the error occurs using fglrx ati driver ( perhaps also using intel )
2) the problem could be probably related to thread management

Wine 0.96 got me farther along the install process for my Line 6 UX2 SoundCard,
but than any other release yet but when I ran the exe in a Linux terminal, it
gave several errors and said to report them.
They are attached.
Thank you
Randy Ross

I got the same problem running PFE (Programers File Editor from IBM, old
version) under wine-0.9.60; it seems that the program is running well despite
of the message "fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap (0x9e0000, 0x1) stub"

I had the same problem when running PFE (Programmers File Editor, from IBM at
some time); to me it looked that the standard assignment of fixed pitch font
under Windows can result in a variable pitch font; I switched to a fixed pitch
font (the program allows that) and after that PFE works fine (execpt other
little errors which should be handled in other bug reports).

Unfortunately I experience some playability issue
(http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12784), so couldn't test in this
version of wine. Should I try some other version or settings?

Crash on Wine 0.9.59
Which is worst, in 0.9.59 these 2 errors are new:
1 => err:service:RPC_MainLoop RpcServerUseProtseq failed with error 1703
2 => err:wineboot:start_services_process Unexpected termination of services.exe
- exit code 1703
In 0.9.58 never appeared.

Tests.
Test Case:
Compiled in Windows XP Professional with Visual Basic 6.0 SP6.
Included:
-Source Code
-Compiled code in "Native" mode
-Compiled code in "P-Code" mode
It should fail when pressing the "Func" button, which invokes the timer with a
callback to a function, pressing the "Sub" button should work fine, filling the
list with current time.
Tested with Wine 0.9.59. I'll add crash log in next attachment.

CreateScalableFontResource is being implemented; you can see my latest attempts
here:
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2008-April/053917.html
These enable me to run Civ 3 (downloaded via Steam).
You can apply those 7 patches and, in theory, it should work.
Hopefully I will someday get a version in good enough shape to be committed;
my hope is to have it in before 1.0 code freeze.
Cheers,
Jeremy

Hi,
I just tested with 0.9.60 ; using 'Alsa' and 'Directsound: Hardware
Accelleration: Full' in winecfg's audio tab; and it sounds great, both music
and speech.

The situation is even worse than previously - the bug #3747 is of course still
present (at least in Wine 0.9.59 - this is the latest version available in
Ubuntu's repository, which I'm using at the moment), so running precompiled
Wine is not an option.
So I downloaded the source (0.9.59 and 0.9.60) and tried that hack I described
in the bug #3747, but when wine is compiled from source (either 0.9.59 or
0.9.60), the game's exe won't even run - wine just reports some error while
reading memory at some address (using a Win32 dialog box) and exits.
Don't know what's wrong this time, but personally I don't care about the game
any more, and I'm not interested in investigating this issue any further (also
because it's somehow problematic).
