--- Comment #27 from Henrik Danielsson <h.danielsson(a)gmail.com> 2008-04-10 16:44:07 ---
I just got yet another kernel panic freeze and booted up with the last kernel
on my grub list to test that instead.
For some reason, my gfx drivers weren't activated here, so my desktop was
cloned (800x600 looks really bad on a 24" widescreen, btw...).
Guess what, uTorrent auto-started and now lies comfortably in the systray. I
can mini-/maximize/open/close/restart it without any problems. Too bad it won't
last as I have to get the drivers working again...
uT version 1.7.7, Wine 0.9.59.

No one should ever have to install this package to satisfy another installer.
We should be broadcasting "3.1" or whatever version is requested by builtin

New information
The log spits out a lot more information when running nfsu2 than before.
I'm sure this has to do with the problem here, it definetly lists all the
functions you should be able to bind to keys.
With native dinput8 it works... almost. (see Bug 10501)
If that matters, cedega has proper keyboard input in both nfsu and nfsu2, but
if you change the defaults, keys stop working. They seem to use some messy
per-application hacks for that.

I want to point out that ATI fragment shaders is not special. It is mainly used
to allow bumpmapping to work on older radeon 8500/9000/9100/9200/9300
(rv250/rv280) cards. For this functionality we use an old opengl extension
called ati fragment shaders.
We don't use this at all for shaders as used by directx. The extension is alos
way too limited for that (it only allows pixel shader 1.x).

A user asked about this today
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-users/2008-April/032049.html
and pointed out that UNC paths are officially supported (see "Network Shares"
in
http://www.winehq.org/site/docs/wineusr-guide/misc-things-to-configure ),
so I looked at it a tiny bit.
Sure enough, if you smbmount something onto
dosdevices/unc/servername/sharename,
$ sudo apt-get install smbfs
$ sudo vi /etc/hosts (and add entry for name of windows machine 'fast')
$ smbmount -L fast (and verify the expected share is visible)
$ sudo mount -t smbfs //fast/dank /mnt
$ cd $HOME/.wine/dosdevices/
$ mkdir -p unc/fast
$ ln -s /mnt unc/fast/dank
you get the same results executing either /mnt/a.exe or \\fast\dank\a.exe:
$ wine /mnt/a.exe
err:module:import_dll Library cygwin1.dll (which is needed by
L"Z:\\mnt\\a.exe") not found
$ wine '\\fast\dank\a.exe'
err:module:import_dll Library cygwin1.dll (which is needed by
L"UNC\\fast\\dank\\a.exe") not found
So that's great. However, cmd doesn't support it:
$ wine cmd
CMD Version 0.9.59
Z:\home\dank>dir \\fast\dank
Volume in drive Z is
Volume Serial Number is 0000-0000
Directory of Z:\fast
File not found
See how it doesn't even recognize it's a UNC drive?
Likewise, Notepad can't browse to a UNC path.
Rob Shearman posted a patch this morning that seemed related,
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2008-April/053118.html
but that doesn't magically make Network Places show up in
Notepad's file dialog in my tests.

That's weird. I've attached a screenshot showing how the game looks in wine

I'm getting the mouse bug I mentioned above (sorry, but the bug I was pointed
to did not contain any fix for it) and I am experiencing a little tearing in
graphics here and there, but other than that, the game is running great.
By tearing in graphics, I mean I see some white-blue kind of pixels in a row at
many places, like while driving I can see small (about one pixel wide) blinking
lines of white-blue pixels almost everywhere.

Turns out this is a fundamental difference between the handling of broadcast
messages between Windows and Linux. Personally I don't think we can fix this.
This would require a patch in the Linux kernel that has been proposed (and
rejected by the kernel devs) before. I've talked to a couple of kernel hackers
about this on LinuxConf.EU last year and while they said they were happy to
help out Wine in general, they were not going to break Linux for us.
Closing as WONTFIX.

You didn't really upset me, so no need to appologize there. I really appreciate
you, and everyone else, actually taking time to do something about this, no
matter where the problem is. To not drag this even more off topic, I'll get to
the point:
I mentioned I have two screens before, some time ago I had disconnected one of
my screens and went back to a regular setup (single monitor at 1280x1024
instead of 3600x1200 stretched across two, using the nvidia gfx tool and
virtual resolutions). The thing is that when I had done this and bootet up,
µTorrent sat there nicely in the systray and minimize/maximize both to systray
and normal "programs list" worked fine! Behaviour was concistent after reboots
and ending/starting µT as well, until I hooked up another screen again and µT
got buggy again. This was with version 1.7.7 of µTorrent and 0.9.57 of wine I
think. (Don't remember exactly cause I was only using that setup for about a
week while back home at my parents' place.)
Yes these are the exact same .exe files and config files used under XP, Vista
and Ubuntu (folder symlinked), ranging from wine 1.7.4 to 1.7.7. Also tested
briefly with 1.8 alpha, which seemed to work better, but I had to remove it
fast or get banned from trackers. :(
I'm not definatley sure this is a regression in Wine, but I think it might be
unwise to close this discussion before it's been determined what the cause
really is.
Sorry for not being able to give more detailed info about this, or running a
regression test yet, but I simply don't have the time. :(

Any chance to test with git wine? There was a fix after .59 for a PBO bug that
was affecting P8 textures in games like commandos 3. Perhaps it's also in
effect here, although I'm not sure.

Thats the result of the "solution" to bug 1410. See bug 12472.

In current git, installs fine again, and I don't get any errors about services.
TestComplete6.exe, however, issues:
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x7bc919e4 "loader.c:
loader_section" wait timed out in thread 0042, blocked by 0094, retrying (60
sec)
then eventually crashes without the backtrace in the terminal. I got one from
winedbg, bt all. I'll attach it shortly.

I too have this bug. But I don't think it's just a wine bug.
For me it started happening not when I updated wine, but when I updated gnome.
But the icon has also disappeared in KDE since I updated wine, so that may not
be the only cause.
As a workaround, try running utorrent in a virtual desktop, it works for me.

For me, the splash screen shows, I press start game, the game acts as if it's
going to run, then I get an exception screen, which I had to switch to a
virtual terminal and wineserver -k. My cpu is a bit busy ATM though. Anyone
else mind giving this a try?

Everything seems to work fine,
just a few issues:
- Cursor stays in 'sandbox'-mode
- I can't close the 2nd window (with the graph on it): back, file->exit and the
close button of my windowmanager is ignored
(I just ran the app in my vmware and I confirm that the issues are only visible
in wine, it's not the application)
See my previous message for the output

I'm doing it because after parsing chm file i've got url in format like:
"pr\00a9sentation_du_logiciel.htm" and NavigateToChm needs that url in format:
"pr\00c3\00a9sentation_du_logiciel.htm".

I am not sure one needs to do any MultiByteToWideChar() at all - because
the input is really 7-bit padded to 16-bit - I think you just need to do
parse_html_entities() before NavigateToUrl() - parse_html_entities
does in-place modification, so one might want to make a copy of surl,
first, but that's basically it, I think.

I thought so too... but i have some problems with charset encoding...
With unset LANG and LC_ALL it works fine but with my locale pl_PL.utf8 it still
doesn't work... could you check my patch and confirm this two behaviours?
When I convert multibyte string "pr\xc3\xa9sentation_du_logiciel.htm" i get
widechar:
- with pl_PL.utf8 "pr\0102\00a9sentation_du_logiciel.htm"
- with unset LANG i get "pr\00c3\00a9sentation_du_logiciel.htm" (which is
correct)
Do you know what am I doing wrong?

Maybe not the same problem - but definately "a problem" with the install, to
commence the install I had to use
wine ie6setup.exe /q
it will allow the setup to continue, but unfortunately it failed for me after
downloading appeared to succeed.
I found the install file in ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/
Internet Explorer/W2K/expinst.exe
which failed silently when I tried to execute it (even with WINEDEBUG=-all"),
however I'm not sure that this is the correct file to run.

That's exactly that. My point is to have Wine loading theses fonts. It would
avoid to use the ones generated by Arno...
Now that someone can test (I still not have time to reinstall my Linux), can we

Dripple, which bug do you refer to exactly (I have wtlib, and would like to
help with testing)? Do you mean references sign and hebrew letters? If so, then
yes, there is bug on clean wine 0.9.59.
There are several files in windows/temp dir, some of them are definately ttf
fonts (named, for instance, MPS51a2.tmp). These are being created just in time
of first opening of page, containing such symbols.
Bug screenshot: http://polosatus.ru/wine/fonts_bug.png
Reference rendering: http://polosatus.ru/wine/fonts_reference.png
Notice all these boxes instead of special characters.
Reference rendering was achieved this way: I've opened these temp files in font
editor, and saved them in non-unicode encodings (in symbol, hebrew and greek to
be exact). Then I've put these new files to windows/fonts and voila! it's
working. Simple copy of these files, without encoding change didn't work.
Wine reports the following:
When program starts:
fixme:midi:OSS_MidiInit Synthesizer supports MIDI in. Not yet supported.
fixme:font:WineEngCreateFontInstance Untranslated charset 227
fixme:imm:ImmGetDefaultIMEWnd (0x10050 - (nil) 0x1324b8 ): semi-stub
fixme:imm:ImmSetConversionStatus (0x1324b8, 0, 0): stub
fixme:imm:ImmReleaseContext (0x1005c, 0x1324b8): stub
fixme:commdlg:PageSetupDlgW Unicode implementation is not done yet
And later on, when I open text:
fixme:tooltips:TOOLTIPS_SetFont full redraw needed!
Well, I suppose the problem is with somewhat unicode.

In fact I think you have to do it as a hard-coded table (if it isn't already
somewhere in the wine code tree) since the transform table is hard-coded to
the html standard, I think. You can read it at www.w3c.org. So if it isn't
already in the wine tree, you may have to have the whole table hard-wired. (I
could be wrong though, as it is conceivable that some MS api could do it...)

For a proof-of-concept, you can even just hard-code the transform for the
french "e" (e.g. search for "&eaute" and replace it with its UCS-16 equivalent)
and just that and have a prototype patch which demonstrates that would fix the
problem. Then you can think about doing it generally for all
accented/htmlscaped characters, and move the code into the right place...

That's what I meant - the accented "e" needs to be put into UCS-16LE -
double-byte
unicode small-endian, rather than "é" which is all lower 7-bit.
i.e. turns it from 8x2 bytes (8 WCHAR with higher 8-bit zero) to 2-bytes.
I would say do it in place and see that it works, then think about moving it
to the right place :-).
The right place is probably something to do with urlencode, so it would be
around
the urlmon, etc area.

in fact it's not the problem that they use lower 8bit.. because:
"mk:@MSITStore:Z:\\home\\adam.asnyk\\.wine\\drive_c\\Program
Files\\GT2002\\gt2002.chm::présentation_du_logiciel.htm"
eacute is accented (french) "e".. so it's ok, but I think it should not be
encoded with html entities.

My hunch about the not-working pages with accented characters is that they need
to be transformed to WCHAR properly. The URL strings are WCHAR strings, but
they only use the lower 8-bit or whatever at the moment - I think that may need

Ah, well... things have changed at least.
fr-038 seems to work as well as it does on Nvidia cards now in both GLSL and
ARB, except for the fact that the letterboxing is white instead of black (a
relatively minor problem, but odd nonetheless).
3DMark 2003 caused a hard system crash with GLSL (couldn't ssh in, couldn't
reboot with magic SysRq keys) while loading the first test. I didn't try ARB
for fear of another hard crash. This is almost certainly a driver bug.
With both GLSL and ARB, most tests in 3DMark 2001 display almost entirely
black, except for faint greyscale geometry silhouettes, but only for a few
things. Using GLSL, the Pixel Shader and Advanced Pixel Shader tests appear to
work just as well as they do on Nvidia hardware. With ARB, many things simply
are not rendered in the Pixel Shader and Advanced Pixel Shader tests.
This is with the same Radeon X1400 as above, but using fglrx 8.471.3 (ie,
Catalyst 8.03).

yes, I have the same problem

I don't think that unimplemented graphics might be a problem because help pages
are rendered by gecko which can handle such simple html pages.
I noticed that pages that doesn't work are the pages with accented chars in
htmlhelp url, like:
trace:urlmon:parse_schema
(L"mk:@MSITStore:Z:\\home\\adam.asnyk\\.wine\\drive_c\\Program
Files\\GT2002\\gt2002.chm::présentation_du_logiciel.htm" 00000000

or

Files\\GT2002\\gt2002.chm::comment_géo.htm" 00000000 0x32e5e8 64 (nil))

The bug is still there with wine-0.9.59, and indeed it is not a opengl bug. It
is a dsound bug
When disabling the sound in winecfg, the game does not deadlocks anymore.

Hi..
I've got a new laptop that can only do 24bpp mode (toshiba satellite a200
ah6/Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics
Controller), if I'm interpreting the output of xdpyinfo correctly.
The laptop won't run games that do run on my older desktop machine, and it
looks like this bug is the reason.
I have tried the Xnest and vnc tricks, but they complain about being unable to
do 8-bit graphics as well.
I'd really appreciate it if this could work again. Total Annihilation is still
a fun game!

F1 works for me (and I can run the apps alright, I think - I am not a pole,
can't do a thing with it), although wine crashes on exit (probably different
problem)
With wine git.
It is also curious that some help page is blank (only a couple)
but I guess it is something to do with unimplemented graphics, and anyway,
I can't read polish and don't know what's supposed to be missing.
You seem to be right on the +2 double-null terminate.

The msxml3 one might be easiest, so changing category to msxml3, as
you suggested in #16.

I'm not the original poster, but I can confirm I still see these very same
graphical glitches in WINE 0.9.59 and I have an NVIDIA card (7900GS) with
pretty up-to-date drivers (100.14.19). The mouse issues are also still there,
but they got better (sometimes the mouse will pretty much get stuck on you and
refuse to budge or judder slowly in the right direction). At this point, the
emulation is sufficiently advanced to make the game playable (finished it this
weekend), but it'd be great if these remaining issues could be fixed in the
near future.

Yes it's still an issue - nobody has been working on the monthcal. You need to
pass -lcomctl32 to the linker.
