Summary: Environment Variable sections in Wine user guide is
incorrect
Product: WineHQ.org
Version: unspecified
Platform: Other
URL: http://www.winehq.org/site/docs/wineusr-
guide/environment-variables
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P2
Component: www-unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: joe(a)neoturbine.net
This bug is just for a documentation fix.
http://www.winehq.org/site/docs/wineusr-guide/environment-variables says that
strings under the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Environment are used to modify certain
environment variables. With wine 0.9.58 this does nothing.
The correct location is documented at http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys
and is HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Session Manager/Environment
Also, unlike what the first part of
http://www.winehq.org/site/docs/wineusr-guide/environment-variables says,
normal shell variables do not seem to appear in wine, i.e.,
$ export MYENVIRONMENTVAR=myenvironmentvarsetting
$ wine cmd
CMD Version 0.9.58
H:\>MYENVIRONMENTVAR
File not found

This is still present in 0.9.58 but only occured with Gnome (with turned off

Tested FL Studio with latest git. I do not use a proxy server.
Some apps expect the ProxyEnable entry to exist. Clicking on the 'online news'
widget brings up an error "Failed to get data for 'ProxyEnable'"

Still a problem in Wine 0.9.58, can anybody take a look on this bug?? It would
be nice if it could be fixed for 1.0. It was working if you set Windows version
to 98 but in Win2k or WinXP it doesn't.

Current git obeys the http_proxy environment variable for which graphical
configuration screens exist in KDE and GNOME. The environment variable can
be overridden by setting this registry key:
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
"ProxyEnable"=dword:00000001
"ProxyServer"="http://proxyserver:8080"

Why is this marked as resolved, when the bug is still present, people?
It might be an interesting data point that it apparently doesn't crash if you
manage to disable the fullscreen mode,
but since that's the original bug that was reported since 0.9.16 and is still
present in 0.9.58, it's not really any reason at all to mark this as
resolved...
Playing in a tiny window without videos is certainly not acceptable,
considering it worked almost flawlessly before.
So please fix the bug, don't talk it away.

Confirmed for emule 0.48a, emulePlus 1.2c, as well as the MMORPG Arindal (

However, I could not reproduce the problem in WASTE (using 1.5beta3), so I will
assume they found a workaround for that within their code.

There are few requirements for these patches to work:
1. DXGrab have to be enabled (winecfg->Graphics first check-box).
2. The cursor should be invisible/turned off by the application (ex FPS game,
not the menu).
3. Optional: remove mouse warping code from the dinput.

Created an attachment (id=11740)
--> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=11740)
patch which supplies correct browser dispatch to completion event handlers
Hello,
another random pick (now from 1.0 buglist *g*).
The app was rechristened "Social·fm Desktop" and is now found at:
http://www.mercora.com/product_desktop.php
The GUI is based on dynamic HTML with the usual browser (shdocvw) event
sequence:
BeforeNavigate2
NavigateComplete2
DocumentComplete
In the app "DocumentComplete" handler, NULL interface pointers are referenced
leading to crash.
Was a bit nasty to debug because the app simultaneously loads two pages (main
gui DHTML view) and a splash like DHTML dialog (login window).
The app uses the "NavigateComplete2" event to setup several internal stuff,
e.g. HTML document dispatch from browser (for IID_IHTMLDocument2) and wire up
the event sinks for DHTML events.
Due to a misconception in shdocvw's navigate_complete() this setup phase is
completely skipped, leading to later NULL references when the app's
"DocumentComplete" handler is executed.
The problem basically boils down to app "NavigateComplete2" handler comparing
the dispatch pointer which is supplied as first argument to the browser
dispatch which was stored when the control was initially created.
On mismatch it immediately bails out of the handler.
--- snip dlls/shdocvw/dochost.c ---
static void navigate_complete(DocHost *This)
{
...
hres = IUnknown_QueryInterface(This->document, &IID_IDispatch,
(void**)&disp);
if(FAILED(hres))
FIXME("Could not get IDispatch interface\n");
dispparams.cArgs = 2;
dispparams.cNamedArgs = 0;
dispparams.rgdispidNamedArgs = NULL;
dispparams.rgvarg = params;
V_VT(params) = (VT_BYREF|VT_VARIANT);
V_BYREF(params) = &url;
V_VT(params+1) = VT_DISPATCH;
V_DISPATCH(params+1) = disp; <--- incorrect dispatch supplied!
V_VT(&url) = VT_BSTR;
V_BSTR(&url) = SysAllocString(This->url);
call_sink(This->cps.wbe2, DISPID_NAVIGATECOMPLETE2, &dispparams);
call_sink(This->cps.wbe2, DISPID_DOCUMENTCOMPLETE, &dispparams);
...
}
HTMLDocument IDispatch given to both sinks results in a vtable pointer mismatch
when the handler compares against WebBrowser2 IDispatch.
Attached patch fixes this.
Now the app "NavigateComplete2" handler fetches and stores additional document
interfaces and wires up the event sinks for DHTML events.
When the "DocumentComplete" handler is called, the elements collection is now
correctly accessed with the interface pointers stored.
Unfortunately the app will crash again at later stage.

Vitaliy,
I'm convinced this (virtual pointer) method should work for fullscreen apps, so
if it were restricted to this case, I think the vast majority of dependent bugs
would be solved.
Having said that, I've applied your 3 patches to GIT, and the pointer doesn't
get warped (although it doesn't deadlock either) in AvP (bug 7613)

winex11.drv: Use ClipCursor to grab/ungrab the pointer
Here are my old 3 patches that moved mouse warping to winex11drv. However they
weren't accepted. While first two will take care of keeping mouse inside Wine's
windows last one actually does the "magic". However it has a problem - it
deadlocks while waiting for the next mouse event.

I think its completely irrelevant how windows does it, it can read mouse
movement directly from the driver.
Wine however, has to take what X gives us, or get its own mouse driver.
Thats not that easy, as far as I know, because we would have to override X's
driver somehow.
The best way would be to get mouse messages from X pretty much, so we know the
mouse was moved, even if absolute cursor position did not change.
In window mode for example, the mouse could still leave the window and it could
loose focus, that needs some thinking...
But until there is no direct way to get mouse events from X, we cant do
anything on this issue.
If I got anything wrong, please corret me ;)

There is similar bug in strongDC++ ( http://strongdc.sourceforge.net/ ) Sources
available. Tooltips there are also broken, but I'm not sure if it is exactly
the same bug.

patch which prevents incorrect write-protect attributes on file targets
Hello,
another patch to get full installation working.
This was a bit nasty to investigate/debug because the VS.NET installer takes a
huge nap until the real installation of components starts (30-60 minutes
depending on machine speed).
I hope James will optimize the table joins one day further (low priority).
Prerequisite: clean ~/.wine, winetricks vcrun6 gecko, shell32 patch applied
As I already outlined in another VS.NET bug report, the AeDebug "Auto" key gets
modified in early stage (by ms debugging service component -> "0").
This has the consequence that in case of unhandled exceptions, winedbg is no
longer automagically runaway-spawned, hiding possible problems.
Instead "nice" message boxes are popping up, asking the user what to do.
So all that is needed is to prevent any unhandled exceptions caused by
component installers ;-)
When the "mobile device support" component within VB.NET component is selected,
the .NET compact framework is installed too (= default).
Unfortunately this leads to a problem at late installation stage which unearths
msi bug.
There is a small .NET executable temporarily extracted and spawned with the
following command line:
--- snip ---
genxml.exe "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET
2003\Setup\conman_ds_package.xsl" "C:\windows\profiles\All Users\Application

The files were installed by VS.NET installer at earlier stage - and have
write-protection set (mounted DVD ISO).
This is the cause of the exception when the output file is to be opened.
Msi's copy_file() calls CopyFileW() (dlls/kernel32/path.c) at some point to
copy files from source media to target.
CopyFileW's target inherits the source file attributes ->
GetFileInformationByHandle( source ...) -> DVD ISO, hence the target "write
protect".
When I looked at other installed files, I noticed a strange thing...
Various files were write-protected and some not.

At certain installer stages, components are (re)installed again (no skip
condition met).
For example some tools ship with .NET Framework SDK and the same tools ship
with VS.NET 7.1 main installer.
Msi encounters a permission problem while copying the files again
(STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED -> NTSTATUS = 0xC0000022).
The "copy_install_file Overwriting existing file: 0" indicates that msi fixed
it by adjusting file attributes to "normal".
This is the explanation why there is a mixture of write-protected and
non-write-protected files.
Now the real problem: msi's copy_install_file()/copy_file() doesn't honour the
"File" Table, "Attribute" column in case of attribute "none/normal".
If you use ORCA tool on .msi "File" table you will see various files with zero
attribute value (while others have 0x400 = readonly):
--- snip VS.NET msi "file" table data ---
conman_ds_package_xml_1________.3643236F_FC70_11D3_A536_0090278A1BB8
SDE_ConMan_AppData_Devices________.3643236F_FC70_11D3_A536_0090278A1BB8
132950|conman_ds_package.xsl 2487 0 17472
--- snip VS.NET msi "file" table data ---
"0" means "normal" attributes
I attached a small patch which resets the target attributes to "normal" if
necessary.
This lets the VS.NET 2003 enterprise edition installer finish a full
installation (= all components selected).
Though the separate MSDN library sub-installer has a problem which I will look
later into.
Anyway ... even with a full installation now succeeding this doesn't
necessarily mean VS.NET works.
There are various installer gaps which lead to later problems.
I already mentioned the most prominent: msi not publishing assemblies into
GAC/SxS.

Test p[atch
I have a suspicion that the problem here is owner draw tooltips, which is not
supported by wine. I found a sample which confirmed it didnt work, and did some
hacking/development.
Can any of the people on this bug notify list test this for me?
Since tooltips dont seem to provide item notifications, nor erase
notifications, I believe all this patch is missing to be submitted is
CDF_DODEFAULT support (easy to add)... and tests...
Note: Windows calls the custom draw routines twice (once in the calculation of
the rect size, once as its drawn). However the attached patch correctly calls
the notify routines for the drawn time (with the same parameters as far as I
can tell as windows) and got my app working and the other would be a seperate
patch.

Capitalism 2 installs normally, then I try to launch it from the icon that Wine
created for it on my desktop. The splash screen shows up and performs a CD

full screen) and it crashes with the error:

Hi all,
I took a glance into mouse.c. Can anyone tell me where the mouse uses X events?
I dont see anything, exept that wine reads mouse staus from X.
And it looks to me that wine is handleing everything on its own. Is that
correct?
I will check and read on. Only have checked mouse.c yet.
If someone has some overview doc that would be great. However I continue my
research.
Is there any mouse.c description of the windowsside?

Hmm. With today's git, the installer exits quite early,
saying
"Setup was unable to copy the file D:\\ to your temporary directory. Please
make sure that this file exists and rerun setup."
This message came becaus a SHFileOp call failed.
It turned out it was a copy without FOF_MULTIDESTFILES set,
and the caller seemed to have a single filename dest list,
without a terminating second null; after the first filename
was garbage. I tried a few things, but the only
way to get the installer past that problem without
breaking any tests was to treat invalid filenames
as list terminators. I'll attach that patch.
I'm afraid to write a test to verify that's correct
behavior, it seems a bit flimsy :-)

Still not working today. Often seems to hang.
Sometimes aborts with a font-y sort of stack dump
which 'winetricks corefonts' might help. But tracking
this down is frustrating as it usually seems to hang
(right after loading awt?)

Today the app's installer puts up this error dialog:
"Unable to load
C:\\windows\\temp\\{7CA413A2-E00B-478B-9903-C0D2A82EC6F4}\\G7AppUtils.dll"
Turns out that file exists but wineserver rejects it
because it has bad magic; it fails this test:
if (dos.e_magic != IMAGE_DOS_SIGNATURE) goto error;
If you click OK, though, it installs, no matter what serial
number you typed in.
On Windows XP, the app won't install, even if you
type in the right serial number, it tells you it's
invalid. An Amazon review says same thing happened to
him.
So this software is not worth spending time on.

Another instance of this problem was reported here:
http://winehq.org/pipermail/wine-users/2008-March/031234.html
To reproduce, unpack
http://www.coopcacec.com.py/webcacec/dbcoop/test.tar.bz2
Run apl2.exe, choose the menu item to open a window,
enter a number in the window's third edit box,
then change focus away. You'll see a + appear and part
of the number become obscured; this doesn't happen in Windows.
For instance, if you type 456789 and change focus, the
number changes to "+.5678.9".
Doing sh winetricks vcrun6
and setting msvcrt to native makes the problem go away, as expected.

It was last updated almost 8 months ago. Whether or not it's 100% up to date:
I dunno. But there do seem to be some hacks related to this bug in there. See
specifically around line 622 "#ifdef MOUSE_HACK" and below, where they work on
transposing "Relative mouse input with absolute mouse event", and the
WARP_NEEDED, WARP_STARTED, etc.

Lukáš, we *do* see it as important. It's just hard, probably
four man-months of effort just for this one bug! The fact that
we all want it badly doesn't mean that it's going to be possible
to do by June 6th.
We're working on it, so relax. If you can, please find some
way to contribute to wine in the meantime.

Summary: Download for Safari
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.58.
Platform: PC
URL: http://www.apple.com/safari/
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P2
Component: msi
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: Speedator(a)gmx.de
When I try the wine-uninstaller I get the "Change, Repair or Remove
Safari"-menu. There is only the remove-button clickable. If I click it asks "Do
you want to completely remove Safari"(this is want comes on Windows directly)
then an uninstall-progress starts. But it is very short and after that it says
that installation is successfully. Neither the files nor the uninstall-entry is
gone.
The reg-entry(at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall) is
interesting:
ModifyPath and UninstallString are "MsiExec.exe /I{***}" and not "MsiExec.exe
/X{***} as in windows.
When I change it the "Change, Repair or Remove Safari"-menu also comes first,
the progress seems similar, but the reg-entry is deleted, the files are not.
The wiki uninstaller entry says "The uninstaller does not work with programs
installed with a .msi file.", but I didn't find more informations and didn't
found anything similar in bugs. Maybe Bug 6719 .

I highly doubt that Cedega uses a game compatibility database for all mouse
warping behavior. It does use some game-specific code, but as far as I can
tell, the amount of it is minor. It should be mentioned that the Cedega source
code is available on the web. A license could disallow a direct copy-paste, but
one can look and gather ideas, and ideas can not be copyrighted. I have been
trying to compare the Wine mouse code with the corresponding Cedega code, but
unfortunately I do not know neither C++ nor Wine codebase well enough to
decipher the key differences which cause (or not cause) this bug.

Please stop posting requests to this bug. This is bugzilla of an open source
project, not a user support forum. If you can't contribute code, you may help
in many other different ways, for instance by investigating the problem.
Again, how have you identified that the problem in your application is caused
by a lack of DIB engine? Do you have any profiler statistics, or any other
details helping to better diagnose the problem?

Reporters, describe this more exactly, please. I've ran Icewind Dale with many
versions of wine and never seen this problem. What do I need to reproduce? In
wine compiled from current git I can create characters, both by setting all
parameters manually and by importing and start a game. Do you get this bug all
the time or it happens occasionally? Have you tried with a new .wine directory?
Tried with and without patch 1.06.

I think SafeDisc is what's causing the crash since C:\Program Files\SimTheme

My crash with the real disk seems to be different than with yours, though. (I
get a page fault, you get an illegal instruction) I've attached the crash log.
Again, sorry about the confusion. And hey, at least you can run the game with a
nocd crack. :D

No, I haven't got any profiler statistics, but I can try to get one if it
helps. I will need a guide how to do it though.
There are several reasons I'm blaming DIB engine for slowness.
1. First I reported this bug #12612. As an attachment there is a console output
from Heroes IV under wine. Roderick Colenbrander kindly answered my questions,
and directed me to this bug report and this wiki
http://wiki.winehq.org/DirectDraw.
2. I found this bug #3902, which is tagged as CLOSED and FIXED. While the fix
was released and the author claimed it worked, the fix was rejected due to
regression bugs (see comment #14). So the problem stayed.

In fact, the reason I'm interested in fixing this is Heroes of Might & Magic IV
working under wine (not like a slide-show as it is now). But as I investigated
more about this bug, I found that it affects many other applications.
Please correct me, if I'm wrong, but this 'bug' represents some core Windows
functionality, which realization in wine is far from optimal.
This issue is now 6 years old and is still not fixed. I hoped I see DIB Engine
implemented in Wine 1.0, but it seems it won't be there.
It cannot be tagged minor because there is no 'easy workaround present'.

Summary: wine chooses wrong home directory
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: programs
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: hendrik(a)topoi.pooq.com
Wine failed to find c:\Windows
According to spec, it should have looked for
~hendrik/.wine/fake_windows/Windows.
I suspect it actually looked in /home/hendrik/.wine/fake_windows/Windows.
My home directory is /farhome/hendrik, not /home/hendrik.
After I inserted a symbolic link
ln -s /home/hendrik /farhome/hendrik
wine stopped complaining about not finding c:\Windows.
I suspect that Wine assumes home directories are in /home instead of looking in
the appropriate configuration file, such as /etc/passwd. (There ought to be a
system call you can use to find this information instead of grotting around in
/etc/passwd. Is there?)

X gets unhappy if it can't map the hostname to a valid address, so that's bad
if you're running a laptop without net connectivity.
I've managed to get julliard to agree that we could try and work around that in
Wine. I can try and look into that and maybe get it into 1.0.
The basic idea would be to check if "gethostbyname" returns a loopback address
when the hostname isn't localhost. If it does, we return a special 127. address
instead of 127.0.0.1 or whatever the distro will set.
Then, when we see that magic 127. address in bind, we look up the interface
that has the default route and bind to the IP of the interface with the default
route.
Alexandre hinted he'd accept that approach and I think that's about as clean a
fix as possible.

No, I'm not saying that. I think the real solution is unlikely to be setting
the affinity of wine to run on one cpu when the windows version is set to 98 or
lower, but the actual cause of these threading issues will need to be solved.

Ok im having the exact same problem, where it freezes etc, but the thing is i
am not as good at computing as you guys and i don't understand this "wine"
thing etc. So if you could please help me to install wine 0.9.17 or replace
something in 0.9.45 or whatever im supposed to do that would be really helpful.
Also i don't know how to download wine or open it or get into all that
writing... I might find it if its in my computer/Local Disk (C:)/Program
files/Warcraft III but other than that i don't know :s. so could some1 please
explain what i should do in detail and in newb friendly so i can play warcraft
3 battle.net again.
Thank you in advance.
Respect,
(*$malli$*)

I don't know if 1.50 is available; I can't find my copy.
(For the record, 1.61 is
EDWinXP161.zip 118798257 sha1sum 29c39fc4c932cb72c8b5eb6f120c7a576f1fd2a9
1.61 seems to want mfc40 during install.
It also says
err:module:import_dll Library ntvdm.exe (which is needed by
L"C:\\EDWinXP\\haspvdd.DLL") not found
and it hangs on startup after beeping,
which makes me think it might be hard to get 1.61 running...)

Now using 0.9.57 and still no problem. Are you using "allow window manager to
control the windows"? (I am) Are you using the updated openGL renderer from
http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/ ? (get the one for Deus Ex instead
of Unreal Tournament of course) The one I use is attached to this bugreport.
I'm not using xgl or compiz or anything like that. nVidia geforce 7900 card.

This bug somehow doesn't exist on Cedega (or maybe they use game-dependant
database of workarounds - i don't know), and Cedega doesn't require X server
changes. So there must be other way.

Console logs from Birth of the Federation
Not sure if this helps, but there don't appear to be any console logs for this
rather pervasive bug, so I'm attaching my logs from trying to run Birth of the
Federation.
The logs were generated when I opened the game and first tried to host a
multiplayer game (a game dialog box told me to check my TCP/IP settings as it
could not establish a connection), and then when I tried to join a multiplayer
game (this caused the game to crash)

Opps this was posted to the wrong bug report. I didn't notice that bugzilla
advances to the next bug in your list after you make a reply. I thought I was
making a second reply to my TaxCut 2007 bug. Sorry. You can blame whom ever
programmed Bugzilla to behave that way, without letting users know that it
would do that.

This was to a HL1 engine based regression, not to do with this bug.

I mark this bug as a duplicate of bug #7698 as most of the work has been done
there.
Notice I still experience this bus as of wine 0.9.58. I even had a crash at
1280x800 for the first time today, playing locally with bots.

I really like to see this bug marked for some wine milestone. This is a very
annoying bug.
Basically everything higher than 1024x768 let the game crash, only the old
win98 hack is working.
For some reason, this trick isn't described in the appdb, so I see this problem
popping up regularly in different forums.
