Summary: cygwin programs don't sscanf() properly when -mno-cygwin

testcase project and 2 test binaries
When I upgraded to Winboard version 4.2.7b from 4.2.7a, I got parse errors when
the app tried to extract info from an online chess server. I tracked this down
as far as I am able-- it appears to be only a definition in the makefile:
-mno-cygwin. How that causes the bug, I don't understand, but presumably the
only difference between Winboard 4.2.7b and 4.2.7a (which works in wine) is the
presence of that option in the makefile.
When -mno-cygwin is present, a call like:
n=sscanf("r-bqk -1 0", "%5c%d%d", str, &i, &j);
only gets the first character into str rather than all 5 like it should, and n
becomes 1 with i and j failing to get read.
Attached is a testcase project to illustrate. It includes 2 binaries, the only
difference being the presence of -mno-cygwin during the build. (Line 19 in the
makefile) To build this testcase, you need the cygwin tools, probably just
normal build tools, and to run wbtest.exe, you need cygwin1.dll which I haven't
included.
wbtest-nocyg.exe: works properly in wine and in windows
wbtest.exe: works properly in windows, but fails in wine

Summary: Display of Moon phases erratic in app o/p
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.56.
Platform: PC
URL: http://wxtide32.com/
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: n5470(a)pinefields.com
WXTide32 presents data in four different formats, three of which can optionally
show the Moon's current phase (important in understanding tide levels and
currents). At least two formats, realtime and graph, do not display the phases
(shown as a small circle, divided between black and white, depending on the
computed phase for the date of the data displayed), while the third format,
overview, does show phases. Cycling the check box, in preferences for each
display format, has no effect on the missing information. It should be noted
that, on one or two rare occasions, the "moon circle" has been in seen in the
realtime display, but its appearance is not repeatable. At most, this
appearance suggests that WXTide32 is at least capable of drawing the symbol.
Resolving why it is not done regularly "is left as an exercise for the
student".
No stdout or stderr messages are generated during testing.

Well, I'm using a git-wine of today(21.03.08) and DK immediately crashes if I
start it with a Unix-Path. If I start wine with the Windows-style path both,
the d3d and the normal version crash after showing the intro screen. I started
it in WinXP-Mode in a virtual Desktop. I still have an ATI-card and I'm using
driver 8.3(The Version from march 08). I'll attach the output of both versions.

The problem still persists in a git-wine of today(21.03.08). The game starts,
the title bar is responsive, but the game background is not drawn. In the
linux-console the wine debugger starts immediately after starting the game from
the main-menu. I hat to exit the game via Strg-C. Note, i had to supply
mfc42.dll and msvcirt.dll before I could test it(they're from a Win2000
Installation). I still have an ati-3d-card and I use ati-driver version 8.3 .
I'll attach the output of wine.

Well just a quick word, I've been trying to get the source of this damn bug for
2 days now, and I can't find it.
There's a couple of things that the minimize does right, and it's perfectly
traceable in the code, but the following sequence seems to be created out of
thin air:
- WM_PAINT
- WM_NCPAINT
- WM_ERASEBKGND
When I tried to block wm_paints from begin getmessaged, it screwed up a lot of
things, so if someone knows where it's coming from, be my guest to hint away.
But I put traces and debug messages pretty much everywhere and it didn't get me
any closer.
I did manage to prevent a false WM_CANCELMODE to be sent, which is sent in
dlls/winex11.drv/event.c :: EVENT_FocusOut, and can be prevented by a simple
if(style is Wm_minimize), but that's totally unrelated.
What I do think is that the WM_PAINT isn't really the source of this particular
problem to be honest, and when someone finds out how to prevent the WM_PAINT
sequence, we should be going around debugging the mfc42 and related calllings.
That's just my take on it anyway, I could be incredibly wrong.
I'm not continuing on this bug, as my vision is pretty blurred now.

This needs the SetCredentials method of IBackgroundCopyJob2 implemented.
Specifically, if you put a trace in there, you'll see it needs
Target=BG_AUTH_TARGET_PROXY and Scheme=BG_AUTH_SCHEME_NTLM:
trace:qmgr:BackgroundCopyJobConstructor (L"Visual Studio Express",0,0x7d5a7654)
...
trace:qmgr:BITS_IBackgroundCopyJob_SetCredentials cred=(2,3)
fixme:qmgr:BITS_IBackgroundCopyJob_SetCredentials Not implemented
Note that this depends on an rpcrt4/widl patch set sent today, but that is sure
to get accepted soon enough.

Summary: Ubuntu/Debian 64-bit 0.9.44 package does not exist
Product: WineHQ.com
Version: unspecified
Platform: PC-x86-64
URL: http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/archive/index.html
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: misc-web
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: ninja(a)slaphack.com
This IS a bug, as far as I'm concerned. Building the amd64 package can't be any
harder than building the i386 package, especially when it uses the exact same
binaries.
The last time I looked at:
http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/archive/index.html
It was at least honest: It had a link to 0.9.44 for i386, and 0.9.43 for amd64.
Now, it does have a link to the nonexistant 0.9.44 package:
http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/archive/ubuntu/feisty/wine_0.9.44~winehq0~u…
which doesn't exist.
First I tried the repository, as described here:
http://winehq.org/site/download-deb
The most recent version available was 0.9.43. I then asked in the IRC channel,
where others confirmed that 0.9.44 was, in fact, out and in the repository.
That's what lead me to look it up for myself, and confirm that there is no
0.9.44 amd64 debian package, either in the archive or in the main repository,
or anywhere else I can find.
I know how to compile things from source, and I know how to force a 386 package
to install, but it's a hassle. It defeats one of the main reasons we use
package management: automatic updates.
I'm not sure exactly where to submit this. It's not a bug in wine itself, and
yet, it's not really a website bug. Then again, that IS a broken link there.

I don't think the appropriate component in this case is testcases. Could you
provide any relevant logs and screenshots that demonstrate this problem?

Hello,
just adding another app which needs HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA (.NET based).
Someone in wine-users mentioned it:
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-users/2008-March/030452.html
--- quote ---
But i tried a different program with uses the .NET Framework 1.1. Here is the
Link
http://www.winload.de/screenshots/41122/Internet/Internettools/DSLWatch.NET…
Installation works fine, after starting the Program the same crash appears.
With an other .NET DLL but i think the problem is the same.
--- quote ---
In most cases, the console FIXME's from .NET based apps should not be used to
make assumptions of the cause of failures.
I'd prefer that people just file bug reports rather than trying to guess stuff
they don't know about - even if it resolves to dupe in the end...
With each .NET app examined, more gaps/bugs in wine APIs are discovered - which
is a good thing (tm).
The app mentioned above makes use of .NET's

By adding fake HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA (starting with Global:DWORD=xxxx) one can
get the app at least start (after following usual .NET 1.x howto).
Though the app is pretty useless for now because the real perf data/counters
are missing.
Maybe the performance data/counters problem domain could be made SoC project.
Or have at least one volunteer work on it - even if it's long term/low prio.
It isn't that hard.
Regards

You're right! Thanks for checking!
To get rid of the "script engine has not been initialized to a valid
language" error, install wsh56 first with
sh winetricks vcrun6 wsh56
The app doesn't seem to be able to grab stock data from the
internet, and the root of the tree control flashes
annoyingly, but the app's definitely installed.
Marking as fixed.

Installing and running the Wall Street Advisor seems to work fine as of the
current Git, apart from two dialog boxes that say "The operation could not be
completed because the script engine has not been initialized to a valid
language" on startup and a few visual issues in the application. Bug should

Ya, it works, but I had to do the following:

Dan:
You are correct in the duplicate, but bug 8571 has a link to a very good
description of why this error occurs and what to do to fix it. Leaving this for
you to mark as a duplicate.
BTW, Java 1.3 is VERY old and I think it is not maintained by Sun anymore.
However, if we need to support this, development effort should be expended but
not in favor of other higher priority problems/bugs.

though the installer still has a hitch around the same point.
Version 3 runs if you install gdiplus, else it hits unimplemented functions

perhaps this should be marked a duplicate of bug 10868 which is more up to date
and contains a patch

I just sent a patch so it works if you press the space bar key. For clicking
the checkbox with the mouse, currently the hittest is failing. I'll take a
closer look.
> Bug 2: Selected items in this dialog don't look naturally.
The checkbox looking funny is purely a cosmetic issue.

I've tested 4CD SOA (retail and patched) and I can confirm that this versions
works under Wine. I could not find my ToB CD so I was forced to stop here -
damn, no more CD shuffling?
OTOH DVD edition does not work under Wine if winver >= 2k. I'm not sure about
version - as el pointed (http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6288#c4) both
26498 i 26499 displays same number in the game main menu. But:
- I doubt that the publisher applied a beta patch
- I don't think that it ever was the 26499 beta patch for my language (Polish)
version
- the game folder contains readme.txt for 26498 patch
I played a bit with a debugger and a dissasembler but my asm-fu is weak. It
looks like crash happens in GUI or string related routines but it is mostly
wild guess. Some locale sensitive Unicode/multibyte/widechar issue? Call me if
ya know...
I'm not sure about closing this bug, since it happens only under Wine - game
works ok under Windows XP SP2. I can see that fixing this bug can be
problematic but I would opt to leave it open.

I have written a simple app which uses malloc. I don't know if it is the same

The app returns in wine:

I tried to confirm this in the latest version of wine(0.9.57), but the program
I created(which basically is what he wrote, with the extra code needed to
actually make it give useful output) acts the same way in wine and Windows
XP(allocates about 2 GB before it fails to allocate more). Therefor I claim
this bug to be solved, unless somebody can prove otherwise.

Wow, that was a lot of cd shuffling. My results:
BG2 works
BG2 + Patch 2.0.23037 works
BG2 + Addon works (SOA, TOB)
BG2 + Addon + Patch 2.5.26498 works (SOA, TOB)
BG2 + Addon + Patch 2.5.26499 fails (SOA, TOB)
(works when switching to Win98 though)
So, don't use the beta patch? Closing.

The bug also appears in the demo (downloaded from
http://www.eidosinteractive.com/downloads/search.html?gmid=125), but it is more
difficult to test since the demo crashes after the intro movies. However, it is
still possible to see the bug. Pressing ESC during the intro movies should skip
them - this works in Managed mode, but does not work in Unmanaged mode.
Additionally, pressing letter keys in Unmanage mode will cause those characters
to appear on the terminal. (Managed mode fullscreen is messed up in other ways,
so switching to Managed isn't a realistic workaround in this case). I am using
wine 0.9.57 on Ubuntu 7.10 running Gnome 2.20. To reproduce:
1. Download the demo from
http://www.eidosinteractive.com/downloads/search.html?gmid=125 (the second one,
not the "Hour Long demo")
2. Install
3. Use winecfg to put wine in Unmanaged Mode
4. Run DX:IW demo
5. Observe that ESC does not cancel movies. If you make it to the menu, observe
that key presses do not have any affect. Observe that pressing letter keys puts
characters on the terminal
6. Repeat in Managed mode and observe that while fullscreen is totally messed
up, key focus works as expected

Summary: Medal of Honor: Allied Assault fails to load with NVIDIA
drivers
Product: WineHQ Apps Database
Version: unspecified
Platform: PC
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: critical
Priority: P2
Component: website-bugs
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: aaronsawyer90(a)gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=8157)
--> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=8157)
my nvidia-bug-report.log
I have just switched from an ATI 9700pro to a BFG 6600gt. Unfortunately, Medal
Of Honor: Allied Assault (MOHAA) will no longer run (the single player demo
shows the same problem). With my ATI board, it ran without a hitch in Wine.
After installing the latest Nvidia-glx drivers for Ubuntu Edgy, mohaa fails to
start. An empty grey screen is displayed, with the cursor visible. It seems
that it just can't start the game. ALL other Open-GL games run fine. Here are
my specs:
O/S: Ubuntu Edgy, i386 build
CPU: AMD 3000+ 64
RAM: 1GB DDR RAM
GPU: Nvidia BFG 6600GT
H/D: Seagate: Dedicated FAT32 partition
I have installed the nvidia-glx drivers via apt-get, as well as installed the
latest linux drivers (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.19-pkg1.run). Both produce the
same result.
Here is the output:
$ wine MOHAADemo.exe -opengl
aarons@Aaron-desktop:/media/DSK1_VOL3/mohdemo$ fixme:win:WIN_CreateWindowEx
Parent is HWND_MESSAGE
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x5f564e5f at address 0x5f564e5f
(thread 0010), starting debugger...
Usage:
winedbg [ [ --gdb ] [ prog-name [ prog-args ] | <num> | file.mdmp |
--help ]
$
I have tried everything there is to try. I removed the card and replaced with
the old ATI and it runs. I used different versions of wine (up to 0.9.44) to no
effect. Either it is an NVIDIA bug or a Wine bug.

I use Ubuntu 7.10, there I can set the "Visual Effects" in
System/Preferences/Appearence to "Normal". So far as I know this does enable
compiz.
If I do so then I can watch the Intro! Only in 1 of 4 cases I got a black
screen after the video. If I click during the video with the left mouse button
then Warcraft III displays an additional window showing an ACCESS_VIOLATION.
I can even watch with compiz the first Frozen Throne Night Elf video, but only
for one or two seconds. The screen stays then black and the sound which has
just begon runs in a 0.4 second loop.
If I set the "Visual Effects" to "None" then the Video will be skipped. This
doesn't work always. My last 4 tests:
3 x Test with a 1600x1200 Warcraft 3 Screen resolution: no crash
1 x Test with a 800x600 Warcraft 3 Screen resolution: a black screen which
doesn't vanish.
I did the tests with the most current Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne Version
(1.21b).

Ok, I debugged this with taskmgr.exe and uTorrent. When I send SW_MINIMIZE,
everything works fine, but from winex11.drv it doesn't. When a minimize event
is received we do:
data->lock_changes++;
ShowWindow( hwnd, SW_MINIMIZE );
data->lock_changes--;
The lock prevents SW_HIDE (which is done in response to the SW_MINIMIZE) to
work. Removing the lock works, but is not the right solution. Alexandre
Julliard said on IRC he would have a look at it.

Things were working fairly well with java

have been a bunch of java regressions;
the plain old jre doesn't even install at the

I don't think the difficulty of the "expose

offhand.

http://winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2008-March/051710.html
fixes it quite convincingly, yay!
For the record: if you bother installing the game
to hard drive, the gas station part of the game
will fail because DATA/Y06.btf isn't copied.
(The game accidentally creates a zero-length
version of that file when trying to open it;
same thing happens on XP.)
Either run it from CD or copy that file by hand.
Performance is ok; it's playable, but it slows down
kind of like a tired music-box sometimes on my
1.3GHz Athlon 64 under Wine, whereas it's crisp and
fast under XP.

Just wanted to add: I checked what the behaviour was in Win32, a WM_PAINT msg
was send to the application, so that checks out. The UpdateWindow() api @ msdn
indicates one should see direct result, which is reflected in the default Wine
behavior on these same-thread commands. And since I didn't want to change too
much in other functions, I decided to add it to update_now() since that's
already singled out for solely serving UpdateWindow(). I do however think it
might be best for the sake of keeping things together and sane, the
USER_Driver->pMsgWait... line should be inside the (flags & RDW_UPDATENOW) IF
statement at the end of RedrawWindow().
Anyway, I leave it up to you guys to decide.

Created an attachment (id=11465)
--> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=11465)
Simple fix
I'm pretty new to the code, so it was a bit of a struggle, but I seemed to be
able to fix this particular application by appending a line that seems to cause
the driver to exhale.
I added the line at the end of update_now(), so it pretty much only applies to
applications using the UpdateWindow() function. I got the idea from the
RedrawWindow() function, which calls the same driver function just before it
starts sending WM_PAINTS. (which seemed a bit odd to me, but I'm sure it's
there for a reason)
Thus I didn't see any difference in a few other applications that have painting
issues. But for this test application it does the trick.

I'm using wine 0.9.57 and the game installs fine. It complained about my video
settings when attempting to launch the game and would bomb out so I just set it
up to run in a virtual desktop and it then started up fine.
However, I've only ever been able to get the game to actually play once. The
cursor positioning seems to be messed up with this game (maybe since I'm
running it in a virtual desktop?). When it did play it was working fine.
It usually crashes though when clicking either the campaign or multiplayer
buttons but I cannot get it to show me anything useful in the crash...I just
get the first fix me repeatedly then the page fault :

That exception was an indicator of somewhat poor interface design, I've tweaked

you'll need WebControl.ArticleText later to be able to edit something:)

about fonts, I tried installing corefonts, tahoma and liberation, and it gave
the same backtrace.)

I just tried on Kubuntu 7.10 with Wine 0.9.57 (WineHQ binary) and Mono for
Windows 1.9_4, and got:
fun@heidi:~$ '/home/fun/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/AWB/AutoWikiBrowser.exe'

wine: Call from 0x7b840f50 to unimplemented function

The missing gdiplus function is bug 10982. I've added that as a dependency of
this bug.

This bug was analyzed nicely in
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8945#c4
The immediate msxml3 problem has been fixed, but the install still fails,
even with 'winetricks corefonts vcrun6 wsh56 msxml3 winver=winxp'
If this is the same as 8945, then it's a shdocvw problem.

If we are only able to partially fix, then we need to either prevent paining
the X Area or if we do, we need to refresh it somehow to recover the corrupted

I've not had a single crash for hours now since I changed the WoW sound
settings.
Game Sound Output: dmix:0
Sound Channels: Low
Use Hardware: Off
I experience some stickiness and lag where WoW previously locked on me but
other than that it seems to be running smoothly now.
Also, a side note. It seems that the lock occurred when the sound was panning
(from channel to channel) rather fast (like in fast turnarounds of the view).

Correct. ShellExecute search order/path expansion is the blocker here.
I have already provided all the necessary information for a fix.
Someone just needs to pick it up.
The previous "hurray" stories regarding VS.NET 2005 are a bit misleading.
This bug was originally aimed at Version 7.0 (VS.NET 2002) and 7.1 (VS.NET
2003).
The remaining issue(s) differ from later VS.NET versions.

Turns out
touch ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/shell.dll
works around this, and lets you get to the next problem.
So I guess we need to create a fake 16 bit shell.dll
to make this app happy... it ought to be in system,
not system32, but touching it there didn't help.
(The next problem is: "can't register app with program manager via DDE".
To work around this, kill the installer. It leaves the
app installed.
The next problem is: can't start the game without an 8 bit display.
To work around this, edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to make 8 bits
the default, do ctl-alt-backspace; if gdm or gnome crash
as they do on gutsy, kill gdm, log in on a console,
create a .xinit per 'man startx' with at least xterm and twm
in it, and then do 'startx'.
The next problem is the game quits with
"An error occurred initializing the ports: 10806"
and the wine log shows
0012:Call GDI.53: CREATEDC(13673ee1 "DIB",00000000 (null),00000000
(null),14cf:0230) ret=1367:3f0c ds=1387
err:dc:CreateDCW no driver found for L"DIB"
0012:Ret GDI.53: CREATEDC() retval=00000000 ret=1367:3f0c ds=1387
0012:Call USER.1: MESSAGEBOX(0000,1387a4a0 "An error occurred initializing the
ports: 10806 ",00000000 (null),0010) ret=122f:0219 ds=1387
There's a file DIB.DRV installed with the game. So I
guess we don't support 16 bit drivers :-)

At first I was going to confirm that it indeed seems like there's a
sound-related bug, since -nosound never seems to crash.
But I also found out that by turning off hardware acceleration of sounds

You can implement the version check by moving the code that is currently in
IDirectDraw7Impl_CreateSurface into a separate function, then make the older
versions call this function instead of the DDraw7 implementation, and make
DDraw7 call it as well. Then you can deal with version-specific error checking
in the version specific thunks.

I'm trying crosscompiling test framework but I'm out of luck (some linking
issues). Problem with this patch for me is - how-to determine which version of
DDraw is used in IDirectDrawImpl_CreateSurface. Wine is using same code for all
versions and then it is typecasted to right version interface. Is it true? And
that front/back buffer check is OK for v7, but NOT for older ones - depends on
version.

We might consider, due to the high popularity of the game, this bug getting
fixed before 1.0.
The question is what is the showstopper? wine or the drivers?

I envisaged a solution where for a fullscreen app the XCursor is blanked, but
warped every event, while wineX11drv maintains some virtual coordinates which
the app is given. Thus relative moves of the virtual mouse position can still
be generated at the screen borders.
X11drv would have to take care of drawing the virtual mouse pointer, unless
there's a shortcut in X/hardware.

If you have a different problem to the one originally reported, open a new bug
report, do not reopen this one.
I have also tested the latest version with the latest wine from git and do not
see your originally reported problem or your new problem.

Looks like this bug is a duplicate of either bug 6376 or bug 6387, and
should be fixed now.

I'm not quite sure it's a duplicate of bug 11742,
but you're right, it's not at all fixed yet;
thanks for the correction.

uuhh, but is it really fixed?
Wouldn't it be better to resolve this one as a duplicate of that FastMD5
app-bug. It still doesn't run out of the box, you still need the 'winetricks
dotnet11' work-around to get this running....
Maybe it would be better to gather all apps that run with the 'winetricks
dotnet11" work around under that bug

Aha. +file showed
trace:file:wine_nt_to_unix_file_name
L"\\??\\Z:\\USR\\SHARE\\FONTS\\TRUETYPE\\ARPHIC\\UKAI.TTF" ->
"/home/dank/.wine/dosdevices/z:/usr/share/fonts/truetype/arphic/ukai.ttf"
right before the crash. That font is a known offender, see
http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name?app_id=2634;forum=1;ms…
I was able to work around it by doing
wget
http://apt.debian.org.tw/pool/t/ttf-arphic-ukai/ttf-arphic-ukai_0.1.2006010…
tar -xzvf Desktop/ttf-arphic-ukai_0.1.20060108.orig.tar.gz
ttf-arphic-ukai-0.1.20060108/ukai.ttf
mv ttf-arphic-ukai-0.1.20060108/ukai.ttf .wine/drive_c/windows/fonts/
Funny, I would have thought that bad font would have been fixed in Gutsy,
but I guess not.
Marking fixed!

By any chance does the game behave this way for anyone besides me?
http://appdb.winehq.org/commentview.php?iAppId=1922&iVersionId=9429&iThread…
I acually put an icon on my gnome menu bar labelled "Unlock WoW" that does a
"killall -CONT Wow.exe". Works pretty well, though after a few hours it will
get bad enough that I have to restart it.

Starts just fine here; see screenshot
rm -rf ~/.wine
winetricks dotnet11 allfonts
wine rufzxp_fw1_1_setup_1_1_1.exe
After the install, the app starts fine here. Weird it doesn't start for you

I tried with a clean .wine, with today's winetricks dotnet11,
both with and without allfonts.
In all cases, the app failed to start up.
I'm using
6b9bc1db7994f2664c1f1935df95f0b502277cb4 rufzxp_fw1_1_setup_1_1_1.exe
Is that the same for you?

This app runs just fine for me, after doing winetricks dotnet11 allfonts.
Did you try this on a fresh .wine?
