Summary: Puzzle Quest: Warlords Battlecry III crashes whole
system
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.56.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: directx-d3d
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: 412(a)gmx.net
When I run Puzzle Quest version 1.02 on Wine 0.9.56 and try to accept the first
quest in the game (right after the start) Wine crashes and takes the entire
system with it. The screen locks up after the confirmation sound is played and
then nothing happens. I have to do a cold reset to get back into the Xserver. I
can neither swap nor restart the Xserver once the application has locked.
I can't produce Shell output because Wine doesn't write to the file I piped to
output to. I tried debugging the application but wine-dbg console appears on my
screen and won't run the application until I type "quit" and close it.
I run Xubuntu Linux 7.10 with the latest ATI drivers (catalyst 8.3 - 8.47.3).
The game is run in a window at 1024x768 and behaves completely normal (minor
graphical glitch around the mouse pointer) until I click on that Accept button.

Mercury/32 v4.52 works just fine with Wine. This looks like a Mercury/32 setup
problem. The path to the users mailbox directory should be c:\mercury\mail\~n
if the pmail.usr file is located in c:\mercury\mail.

Hello,
this bug *is* actually a dup of http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5322
Due to shortcomings of performance counters the installer itself runs into its
own bugs (use of uninitialized stack values).

Depends, the reason it was on here was so people could find it if they had this
problem (which should be common) so in that sense it's fixed. On the other hand
it's not technically a bug in Wine itself (although Wine doesn't notice it's
missing when it is compiled) so either way.

Solution found on winehq.org, after some days:
"- Before installing Photoshop, install the Times32 font by downloading and
running http://heanet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/corefonts/times32.exe
- If you don't have Times32 installed when you first run Photoshop CS2, it will
refuse to run ever again, claiming there's a hardware error."
Sorry for this, but I attached here this info now to new people who have the
same problem.

hacky fix patch
Finally found a fix. It seems the nvidia linux driver is reporting resolutions
with a 0Hz refresh rate back to ddraw. Before patch
27113156d96d20296409fcb92839609c8dd7e34a, ddraw would ignore it and report back
to the application 60Hz for all resolutions.
Making ddraw report 60Hz again (instead of 0Hz) fixed the problem. The game
works with current git, although VERY slow in battle mode and it is crashing in
the loading screen of campaign mode.
I'll investigate now the other issues.

I'm sending in the published properties patches tonight. There's a performance
optimization I need to make concerning publishing the source list though,
otherwise it seems to take at least an hour to finish the install (don't know,
didn't wait for it to finish). The problem is that MsiSourceListAddSourceEx is
called for each source (count = 519) and each time a source is added, the
function has to count up the existing sources first, so we're at O(N^2). I'm
gonna bring it down to O(N).

This is a Wine bug, not of component testcases... Keyword: patch
Someone should check that hack/patch and send it in to make this application
work.
This should also be tagged 1.0.0 as there's a working patch already.

Let's put it this way: some games will work better in the future (old and even
new ones) in Wine, while other ones won't (ditto).
So it's mostly a shot in the dark anyway, getting these games to work, or in
case in point, with mouse warping.
Haven't tested the games I mentioned yet (Raven Shield, Iron Wrath for it) with
latest Wine yet.

Since I use ReiserFS I cannot use the chattr trick, however running "echo 3 >

every time so far.

I propose to raise this bug to the level Major, since it fulfill the
requirement for this: loss of functionality and affect a lot of applications
It is a huge task to fix this bug (needs to modify X server)
So, no it won't be fixed in wine-0.9.57

Hi there,
i wanna ask if there is a chance to get fix until wine 0.9.57 or 1.0. I thing,
that this bug affected too many applications (mostly games), which could run
out of the box... Thanks for response...

Every glyph in that font is empty. Not surprisingly that you see nothing.

Checked out a GIT snapshot 30 minutes ago. Snapshot was not patched with the
patch from the wine-patches mailing list.
With this recent snapshot both UT and Deus Ex work fine and don't display an
error message when exiting. I looked into dlls/gdi32/opengl.c and the patch
from Roderick doesn't seem to be applied there. Looked through the GIT log for
fixes from Roderick, but didn't find anythign related to wglDeleteContext.
Care to explain why this is now working and how it was fixed?
Thanks,
Tobias

I tested the git after comment #63. This test is against FLStudio which is
listed under the "Show Apps affected by this bug" link above, specifically FL
Studio version 7 (of which the demo is called flstudio7_rc6b). I also tested
the non-publicly-available FL Studio ver 8 rc2 and had essentially the same
results:
Minimizing the app now produces a task bar button in Gnome (it had nothing
before), and there is also a small (about 32x32 maybe?) window that remains on
the desktop (again this was not present before). Neither one can be
Unminimized back either by right-click menu (grayed out) or click on task bar
button, but they can be right-click Closed and the FL.exe and wine processes
close out normally. Certainly not ideal, but a step ahead from just losing all
windows and having to kill processes just to close the app.
The thing about these Delphi apps (as I understand it) is there are two
windows, one of which is 1x1 ? That being the case, it is undoubtedly that 1x1
(or hidden) window which is the key to doing the Unminimize, and the other
32x32 window needs to be hidden when minimized. But my understanding may be
faulty so do not overrate my "help".

I notice the windows font uses a much larger NE header / resource tables than

I created a wiki page for D3DRM, http://wiki.winehq.org/D3DRM, and also added

did it fine, as it was my first addition to the wiki here.

make it any broader technical discussion, because there is really only one
function missing here and getting it created is the point.

Sometimes Bugzilla is good for technical discussions,

that such discussions should best happen somewhere
else. Say, the wiki.

I did recognize that. However, I don't see there any reason why one couldn't
create just the "chassis" first for adding more stuff piece by piece later.
That initial "chassis" would be this file missing here, Direct3DCreate. It
should only be designed general enough to enable adding _any_ desired new
"parts" (object types) to a list later. For some known missing "parts" there
could already be left a "hole" (stub for new type) in the beginning, but in
general enough a design that's not even necessary, because then more new
accepted types can always be added to the list later (or 'stubs' for new types
until every existing D3DRM function gets modified to accept also the new type).
I don't see any reason why Direct3DCreate couldn't be created even when there
are missing parts. Most obviously there will also be D3DRM functions missing
and added later, just like now the rest of Wine is missing and being added with
new functions. But as all D3DRM functions need to be able to handle any D3DRM
object, it will just be necessary to ensure each new function will accept
objects of any possible D3DRM type defined in Direct3DCreate as well. And
whenever there will be a new type for the objects added in Direct3DRMCreate,
then _every_ D3DRM function needs to be checked to be able to handle it.

The problem isn't that it is difficult to implement D3DRM, just a lot of
effort. You can see the missing Create function as a failure like this: "Can't
enter the car because there is no door". Now when you try to build a door,
you'll see that there's no chassis to attach it to. Once you have the chassis
you need engines, seats, etc. Since D3DRM games are rather rare, and the native
version is technically useable implementing that is a lot of effort with
comparably little gain.
That said, we accept (well written) patches of course :-)

Okie... I studied the D3DRM.dll a bit more and found out David Adam implemented
almost every other function in it last spring, except Direct3DRMCreate and a
couple of others. Unfortunately I found no email of his to inform him. So,
someone else should do this.
As far as I understand from the MSDN API
http://msdn.microsoft.com/archive/default.asp?url=/archive/en-us/dnardir3d/…,
Direct3DRMCreate is the function used to create Retained Mode objects, which
then can be handled with Retained Mode commands. Those Retained Mode objects
are very general type objects, which may be of practically any type defined.
And the RM functions must be able to handle those objects irrespective of the
type defined. Those RM functions do exist already (by David Adam), but one
needs Direct3DRMCreate to make objects utilising them.
So, if I understand correctly, Direct3DRMCreate should be a function allowing a
such object of any predefined type to be defined. I don't know how to code such
a file, but it sounds to me like basically just consisting in a selection list
of all acceptable types for the objects to be created. Thus Direct3DRMCreate
should be a 'master template' of RM objects, each of which is basically a more
specific 'template' of desired type for defining actual objects.
It really doesn't sound too difficult to create such a function for an
experienced coder. I just aren't one.
Just flame me off, if I'm wrong...

Try upgrading to the latest Wine, (0.9.56) move your current ~/.wine directory
aside, create a new ~/.wine directory, and try again. If it doesn't work,
please open a new bug for the installer issue.

I used Centos 5.1, wine 9.55 + cpu-z 1.38 and everything worked except for
motherboard and RAM (SPD). This is the last version where you don't need to use
Win98 or lower compat mode to start the app (1.39 has the driver already
installed error)). I don't know whether old versions of wine work better with
newer versions of CPUz.

Stefan Dösinger is working very hard on these functions, and keeps adding them
daily. I'm sure also this one missing here is already on his task list and will
be added any time soon. He's busy as hell, but I'll add him to the CC so he'll
know about this, too.
Patience, please...

I have more information. It appears coure.fon doesn't work. Replacing
vgasys.fon with coure.fon made things appear to work however it turns out that
overwriting the current font makes the application default the font to whatever
font is first in the list (Bitstream Vera Sans TTF).
Through more testing I have found that all non-TTF wine fonts do not display on
CentOS 5 (Courier, MS Sans Serif, Small Fonts, and System). They will display
if they are replaced with the .FON files from Windows 2000. Perhaps this is an
issue with the font file format wine uses for non-TTF fonts ? Maybe there are
differences between TTF and non-TTF file formats ? I wonder this because (A)
TTF fonts work, and (B) the non-TTF fonts work when replaced with Windows font
files.

Peto, do you still have this problem?
If yes, then please run a regression test:
http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting
The developers will need to know, which exact patch broke Wine.
