Summary: X restarts when opening certain apps in wine
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.53.
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: jellerhimself(a)hotmail.com
First of all I don't know if this is an actual bug in wine, but don't know
where else to report.
I run Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy, and there is no issue when running the wine version in
the official gutsy repository (0.9.46).
When I upgrade wine through the repositories on wine.budgetdedicated.com most
of the apps stops working.
Just after the wine desktop appears the computer restarts X (like pressing
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace).
The following apps all works on 0.9.46 (and still does if I downgrade)
Return Of The Incredible Machine
Edit+ 2
Elasto Mania
Pocket Tanks
GTA2
Starcraft 1
Mansion Poker
But after upgrading to 0.9.5x only Edit+ 2 and Mansion Poker works.
Can't say if 0.9.47-49 works because I haven't tried them.
The fact that it's the game apps that doesn't work makes me think it's a
graphics problem.
The system has a intel i965 chip, and the xserver-xorg-video-intel drivers
installed.

So the bug is, if I start CS:S without using the WINE virtual Desktop...I can
speak ingame to others (not very clear, but it works).
But, if I activate the virtual Desktop (I've more fps then), I can't speak
ingame, the icon doesn't appear and nobody hears me.

IIRC, while BG2 does have an OpenGL mode, it's off by default and is relatively
experimental. The default renderer is some sort of software based rendering
mode.

I'm not really sure, but I think that this doesn't have to be the same problem
in the Baldur's gate 2 and in System shock 2 because:
1. BG2 is OpenGL based and SS2 is based on DirectX (maybe it doesn't depend on
graphics engine)
2. To get rid of the problem in BG2 it enough to switch between desktops or,
when you're playing in windowed mode move mouse cursor out from the window and
then move back. In SS2 nothing of this help.

Sorry, I didn't even see where I would contribute to the wiki. I must be
missing so much. I have now logged in and edited it as best I know how.
I guess Bugzilla isn't the best place to answer your question about the guide,
but I make the following comments.
Note that the link in the wine how to at: http://winehq.org/site/howto on
regression testing leads to a different set of instructions that uses a
different method that seemed to be far too hard to follow (what is a "full
CVS"?). That is, it pointed to http://winehq.org/site/docs/winedev-guide/x1344
The article you referred to Austin was lots more helpful. At least I could get
through it eventually.
Other issues were:
1. I found out I needed to enable the source code repository.
2. The instructions "You will then compile Wine again, and test again." was a
bit cryptic for me. I was glad of help on this.
3. A restart was needed before all wine applications would work again.
So, Thanks Austin.

Thanks Roderick for testing this.
As we seem to be stuck here I wrote the developer of the UT renderer (which is
the same used for deus ex) a mail asking for his help. As he's done the work on
the sourcecode of the renderer he can maybe give us some hints about the
problem we're encountering here.
I report back as soon as he writes back.
Greets,
Tobias

Perhaps your right I should try to track down the methods that glscene(open
source pascal/c opengl implementation) developers use. As for the driver, no, I
have used both the latest intel drivers for fedora. All other opengl apps I've
tested work perfectly. However regression testing has made a huge difference as
I now have it working again. It is a bit slower than when it randomly worked
under 0.9.52 but at least it works and really that's all I care to see.
Working. Forget the fluff it used to work.
> I plan to close this bug soon. Applications that remain to suffer from issues

Seems pretty generic to me when an open source library for c and pascal fails.
Did you actually try any of the demos or are you just shooting to kill? Just
kidding ;). I'm sure since I'm not a wine dev I miss all the juicey tidbits.
BTW most of these demos compile successfully under both wine/lazarus and
wine/delphi 6. The really strange thing to me is the randomness in 0.9.52 about
1 out of every 100 times everything was flawless ... the rest of the time
nothing at all. To me that shouts wine problem... and since it worked sometimes
shouldn't it just always work?
Forgive my lack of windows knowledge I barely know anything about it since I
haven't used it in over 12 years.

In Ubuntu Gutsy, that's in:

eFax Messenger ran acceptably under 0.9.52 allowing for viewing and printing of
local fax files. However, with 0.9.53 the application starts and then shortly
after displaying the main window terminates. This holds true with 0.9.54 and I
have not yet tested with 0.9.55. However, reverting to 0.9.52 allows the
application to run again.

This is still a rather annoying bug, the 2.1 version of ventrilo does not
support directsound output, and is the only version that has a free server so
it's used by quite a lot of people.

Could someone try setting a large paintbrush size and move it around to

There are some controls on CS2 that allow you to slide a token indicator along
a scale or to adjust a curve by clicking and dragging on any point across it. I
found multiple examples where these are not working.
1 - Create a new adjustment layer with “Levels”. The resulting dialog has
little sliding tokens to adjust both the input and output levels. On windows
you simply slide them. On Wine you cannot . Here is a screenshot to illustrate:
http://download.erasmix.net/CS2-WINE/Screenshot-1.png
2 -Create a new adjustment layer with “Curves”. The resulting dialog has a
diagonal line that can be adjusted by clicking and dragging anywhere on it. In
Wine this line seems stuck, there is no way to drag points in any direction.
Here is a screenshot to illustrate:
http://download.erasmix.net/CS2-WINE/Screenshot-2.png
3- Create an adjustment layer using “Brightness/Contrast”. This dialog has
little sliding tokens to adjust left or right (these are a bit different than
the ones described on 1). These cannot be slided either. Here is a screenshot
to illustrate: http://download.erasmix.net/CS2-WINE/Screenshot-4.png

I initially installed MVP Baseball 2005 with nary a hitch. I found information
on the //HKCU//Software//Wine//DirectInput registry key which enabled me to use
my Logitech Dual Action with the game. However, my dual action has died, so
now I have a Saitek P990. Setting up the Saitek P990 in the aforementioned
registry key causes the game to crash on startup about 90% of the times I try
to run it. Interestingly, approximately 10% of the time it runs fine, just
like it did with the Logitech Dual Action.

Some further info about the Puzzle Quest issue. I noticed that the DirectX
installer didn't seem to work properly. I tried running the installer directly
from the command line (Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/puzzle
quest/DXRedist/DXSETUP.exe).
The installer appeared to function normally, but every time it tried to install
a file, I got this error:
err:setupapi:do_file_copyW Unsupported style(s) 0x144
That shows up about 150 times in a row. Afterwards the DX installer says that
installation is complete and your computer must be rebooted, but based on these
errors I don't think anything is getting installed at all.

Confirmed with Puzzle Quest on Steam, but no joy from the workaround posted on

I installed the DLLs as suggested (dpnet.dll in windows/system32, and

Hi,
I didn't actually write the code to fit the stub of CreateScalableFontResourceA
but found a useful workaround:
copy a lucida sans ttf file (or any truetype font you like for that matter)
from your system to LSANS.fot.
start Civilization3.exe and you'll see that your fontproblem disappeared.
(at least, it did the trick on my system: opensuse 10.2 w/
download.opensuse.org wine-0.9.55)

The complicated thing is that not all apps with a 3d view use GL client / child
windows. They can implement their own windowed rendering mechanism (e.g. by
copying some offscreen buffer to the screen). Further not all drivers support
our child window rendering method YET. Nvidia's drivers support it well and
second recent versions of the opensource intel drivers should work too. Rich
your issue is likely driver related.
I plan to close this bug soon. Applications that remain to suffer from issues
like this, should be handled in application specific bugs because it isn't a
generic issue anymore.

Since the original problem was with Cinema 4D, I
think we can close this bug.
Can somebody open a new one specifically for
the thread problem with WoW?
I agree this is probably a case of WoW having a
fragile multithreading scheme that Wine screws up
on somehow.

The Cinema4D demo works on all cores as expected; I can't find any other
programs which display this problem.
Running WoW, I can see several threads in top, but only one of them shows any
activity. I've tried running a CPU intensive addon, but still one thread does
all the work. I wonder if maybe the sound thread uses a lot of CPU under
Windows but a negligible amount under Wine? Sounds unlikely, especially since I
have hardware sound turned off to prevent lockups in Alterac Valley.
I can't understand why the game would spawn extra threads and not use them.
Maybe it's using some fragile threadpool system that for some reason can't tell
that it would be a good idea to start farming out work to the extra threads.
TBH without knowing more about the game's internals I'm utterly at a loss as to
how to explain or reproduce this behaviour so, since it is playable, I think
I'll have to give up on this for now.

I'm on a AMD Athlon 64 FX55 machine, with a Slamd64 12.0 and ATI X800XT with

I patched the game using l2encdec's patcher in order to edit the settings file

As of latest GIT we have an X11 window for the client window. Roughly speaking
this means that apps that have just a file menu and a 3d view now work too.
Like e.g. weatherscope and d3d sdk samples. Before the menu in such apps was
still black that should be fixed now.
So after this bug 2398 should be over for nearly all apps. Some apps like
truespace are doing very strange things but apps that behave normally should
work fine.

World of Warcraft has the same issue, which causes a hefty performance hit
since the game's CPU-bound with all but the wimpiest of graphics cards. In
Windows I get one core maxed, one core hovering around 50%, and the third and
fourth showing some activity - maybe 5-10% above the usual couple of percent
noise on an 'idle' system. (I guess maybe it farms addons out to separate
threads?)
In Wine one core is maxed, but there's nothing at all on the others (again,
except the couple of percent noise).
I'm using 0.9.55, and GetSystemInfo looks right:
trace:reg:GetSystemInfo <- CPU arch 0, res'd 0, pagesize 4096, minappaddr
0x10000, maxappaddr 0x7ffeffff, act.cpumask 0000000f, numcpus 4, CPU type 586,
allocgran. 65536, CPU level 6, CPU rev 3851
Also, the simple test posted by Rico uses two cores as expected.
I don't know where to go from here; is there any particular information I could
provide which might be useful in investigating this?

I succesfully installed all 5 Best of PC games on debian unstable with the
packaged wine 0.9.54, so I think this bug has been fixed. The first game I
tried, KOTOR, hung at the end of the install when using the "typical install."
I think it actually installed ok, but I reran the installer and chose "custom
install" and said no all of the optional questions and the installation
completed fine. I installed all other games with the custom install option.
(Jedi Outcast in game doesn't think it has the cd inserted, though).

I'm not Pavel, but I have the same problem with Utopia Angel. The clipboard
"works" in the sense that it cuts and pastes, but Angel is not able to read
directly from the clipboard.
I'm currently using 0.9.55, I had the same problem with the last version.

Hello,
Today I built, as usual, a fresh compiled version of wine on my linux Ibm T23
machine equipped with latest slackware 12.
I always used old Protel for windows demo version for some checking purposes.
Via wine of course.
But as of 0.9.43 version it could not start at all.
I am attaching a log from a terminal and a program itself in an arj package.
Regards,

Summary: Regression: Old 16-bit programs WON'T work!
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.43.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: critical
Priority: P1
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: amrhi(a)safe-mail.net
After many successful previous Wine upgrades, I upgraded from Version 0.9.42 to
the new Version 0.9.43, only to discover that NONE of my old Windows 3.1 games
will start up -- NONE of them. I NEVER had that problem with any earlier
version. I then uninstalled and re-installed with a different (but still
compatible) .rpm release -- no difference whatsoever. And yes, ALL of my 32-bit
programs worked just fine. As a result, I UNINSTALLED Version 0.9.43 and
re-installed Version 0.9.42 (I simply cannot adequately replace those great old
Windows 3.1 games).
So PLEASE fix this -- DON'T be like some developers lately who just don't seem
to care at all about any of the older stuff. Thank you.
P.S. In addition, "winecfg" was nothing but a 0-bit empty file -- it wouldn't
even run. Is that PROGRESS?

This problem appears to also depend on the window manager used. For instance
I've been playing BF1942 with openbox as my window manager in a gnome session.
With this configuration I do not see the gnome panel. However, if I switch to
compiz instead of openbox then I do see the gnome panel on top of BF1942. Only
the window manager was changed, game and wine version remained the same.

I think that this bug is over now. Red Alert uses palette fading for a lot of
effects and we didn't support this. For instance when you enter the game menu
you should see some fade effect and also in game. Until today's GIT you didn't
see that, the screen stayed black for a while. Most likely this is the same
issue.

The AppDB indicates that fireworks 8 is OK in wine 0.9.51, but not in 0.9.53+.
However, although the program opens OK, when an attempt is made to open any
image the error message appear: "not enough memory".
It seems like the later versions of wine handled the memory differently???

I originally sent something only these lines to appdb(a)winehq.org where
suggestions are to go, but I thought I might enter it here also.
I have a feeling that there are a few appdb maintainers who are inactive, which
reduces the overall effectiveness and quality of the appdb. If appdb entries
have maintainers but the data is old, why are they still maintainers and is
there something that can be done to stop this from happening.
I have some ideas,
my first idea is that maintainers should be reminded to submit new test data
after each new release if no one else has.
If they cannot manage to do this they should get a warning that they aren't
meeting the responsibilities of a maintainer and will be removed.
If they still don't manage to make good on their commitment they should be
removed and a record made that they have been unreliable if they decide to sign
up sometime in the future, which might tie into the approval process.
This would include maintainers failing to approve or reject test data or
screenshots, (I think this is already in progress or done within the last few
days?)
My second idea is that might be useful is a link to list of apps that require
maintainers or test data, this way people can actively seek out to improve the
system by browsing lists appdb entries that,
a. need screenshots
b. need test data
c. volunteer as a maintainer to regularly do a and b.

For me, i can't comment on others:
This bug appears gone in 0.9.49.
In wine 0.9.50 to 0.9.55, graphical glitches make the game unplayable,

effectively test 0.9.54. Sorry for not updating the bug sooner.

I can confirm the same issue also with Virtua Tennis 3 (but also with Virtua
Tennis 1.0 [demo, that you can freely download to test] and FIFA too).
I've tested many gamepads but none of these work properly with the mentioned
games, as I'd press the up button everytime...
I've also tried to change my /dev/input/event* and /dev/input/js* reading
permissions, but nothing changed, I only have to try the "regedit hack", but I
think that a patch for this is really much needed!!!

According to this line mentioned in comment #6 the mask of active CPUs
(act.cpumask) specifies that only one CPU is "configured into the system". The
correct value in this case should be "act.cpumask 00000003".

The very same error still occurs for me, Wine 0.9.55, fresh installation with
the most recent Silkroad Online installer.
For the record: I have 512 MB RAM.
Changing compatibility mode didn't help, changing installation directory didn't
help.

Summary: Sid Meier's Pirates! install fails with 1603 (failing to
request disk 2)
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.55.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: msi
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: cycoone(a)hotmail.com
CC: cycoone(a)hotmail.com
Sid Meier's pirates install fails. The installation returns a 1603 error,
while the installer reports that it is copying 2K Games.url.
The console output shows:
err:msi:ready_media Cabinet not found: L"E:\\mnt\\pirates1\\Language.cab"
err:msi:ACTION_InstallFiles Failed to ready media
err:msi:ITERATE_Actions Execution halted, action L"InstallFinalize" returned
1603
err:ole:ClientRpcChannelBuffer_SendReceive called from wrong apartment, should
have been 0x1500000031
err:ole:xCall RpcChannelBuffer SendReceive failed, 8001010e
Language.cab is on Disk 2, so the installer should have requested that I switch
disks. I can personally attest this is a regression since 0.9.29, and AppDB
suggests it is a regression is 0.9.52. (There were no tests on 53 or 54)

OK, I can confirm that the problem doesn't appear anymore. Mouse input doesn't
get stuck, but is somehow "unresponsive" and kind of laggy. I don't know if I
can solve this next problem with some config tweaking, but if not I'm going to
open a new bug (going to open up some bugs anyway because the software renderer
crashes).
Greets,
Tobias

No, native means windows, builtin means wine.

I'm having the same problems (mouse becomes stuck after some time, sometimes
regenerates after some minutes only to become stuck again seconds later) with
wine version 0.9.55
Currently compiling latest GIT. Gonna check if the problem is solved and report
back then!
I have a question though. What does "native dinput" mean? Isn't wine using it's
own dinput implementation by default, or am I wrong here?
I assume "native" in this context means "supplied by wine", right?
Thanks,
Tobias

Sorry, i'm messing things up now. What i meant to say is:
Hi Dan, isn't this just a duplicate of bug # 9809 ?
Could you try if the patch there http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=9155
works around this bug? BTW, Autodesk 3dsmax 2008 also runs into this bug

Hello,
this looks like the SCM named object issue I recently encountered with VS.NET
2002/2003/2005 installers.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11420
Could someone with acad2000 trial try my patch from that bug
(http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=10552) and see if it helps?
Regards

cpu-z 1.44.1 with wine 0.9.55 in winme mode doesn't show the mainboard info or
memory SPD. This used to work with older versions of wine and cpu-z.

Counter-Strike 1.6 doesn't work. Everything was OK, but when I update wine to
0.9.55 and kernel to 2.6.22.16, CS crashes after launch - it appears for a
second and then exits.
My configuration:
openSUSE 10.3, kernel 2.6.22.17-0.1-default
NVidia GF7900GT, drivers 169.09.
X.org 7.2.0
See log in attach.
