My goal is to run TortoiseSVN under Wine, and I had no problems installed it
under Wine. However, TortoiseSVN enhances M$ Windows Explorer
(C:\windows\explorer.exe) and there doesn't seem to be any way of getting
TortoiseSVN to work with winefile.
Since winefile doesn't have whatever it is that TortoiseSVN needs, I need to
run M$ explorer.exe under Wine.

The bug report was for the 2001 version.
How many people would start using Wine if this bug were fixed?
If it's "thousands", maybe it's worth nominating this for 1.0.

It appears this bug has been corrected.
Fresh install of Turbocad on 0.9.53 the dimensioning problem appears to be
fixed with the built-in mscvrt.dll. A new (minor) bug appeared which is that
the minimze/maximize/close button icons are just "x". The buttons work
properly, however.
Upgrading to 0.9.54 from wine HQ .deb repository corrected this also.
Still leaving this bug unconfirmed, will do a complete review of all functions
and update the app Db sometime this week.
If all is well we can resolve this bug then.

--- Comment #25 from ebfe <knabberknusperhaus(a)yahoo.de> 2008-02-03 16:34:26 ---
i've taken a look at this and imho there are several things important about
this whole thing:
- the major performance-drawback comes from wine trying to find files in large
directories. I've attached a profiling-graph that shows how 70% of the
cpu-cycles for a single file-lookup are spend in the function
'wine_nt_to_unix_file_name'. different profiling-scenarios reveal similar
results.
- the basic problem is to map a case-insensitive filesystem like NTFS/FAT to a
case-sensitive filesystem like linux vfs. when wine gets a request for
"foo.BAR", it looks for the that filename. when it is not found, wine scrolls
through the entire directory, converting every filename to utf8 and doing a
case-insensitive comparison on that. this is done for every filename-lookup so
in a directory of a thousand files, adding another 100 files leads to 100.000
utf8/case-conversions.
- the hash- and utf8-conversion functions are horribly slow. those functions
rely on byte-wise operations which are in fact only emulated on newer (read:
468 and up) processors. rewriting the utf8-conversion to do 2 bytes at a time
(e.g. build a conversion-table at runtime for two-byte input) will effectively
double those functions' performance.
there are some general problems:
- currently wine simply opens a stream to the directory and reads all entries.
as there is no ordering of filenames applied, the first entry that matches
wins. the order is completely left to the OS and therefor random from our point
of view. this may lead to the situation, where wine returns the file "foo.Bar"
one time and "Foo.bar" another time, when asked for "FOO.BAR".
- as far as i can see, there is an unsolvable file-locking problem. creating a
file on the "real" fs implies automatic locking against other processes which
may do the same. since filenames are immutable between all processes performing
on the "real" filesystem, but not between those and wine, we will always
theoretically face toctou-bugs.
imho the best solution for this (except the locking-thing) would be to rely on
a cached intermediate state. when looking up files in a certain directory, we
read the entire directory into a cache-structure (including ordering Foo.bar
and foo.Bar) and start monitoring this directory using inotify.
one big advantage about inotify is the clarity of messages: when a new file is
added to the directory in question, we get to know the file's name in advance
and don't need to re-read the entire directory. consider a directory with 1.000
files, adding 100 files would require reading the directory once, reading from
the cache 100 times and adding to the cache 100 times.
if inotify is not present, we can always fall back to the slower version
already implemented.

It depends on drivers and other protection schemes that are difficult to
implement. While I wouldn't say they'll never be implemented, it will be some
time before it's possible to do so, and it certainly won't be by 1.0.0.

Summary: add conversion of national characters on the fly
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.44.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: bluedzins(a)wp.pl
The problem is that I use some apps that require input of polish characters. I
can type of course characters from a to z, but to get letters like
óęąłśżć I have to press for example alt+a alt+o alt+l etc.
Since the ó character is "international" also (not solely polish) I manage to
input this one. But the rest of them are ignored (*).
(*) I don't know if the keystroke is ignored, or the character the keystroke
creates is ignored
Some thoughts:
a) it would be good to being able to input (for example) polish characters in
the way described above
b) but alternative exists -- conversion on the fly, this means I would press
keys that creates polish characters in linux and such character is converted
(user should specify source and target charset encoding) and put into windows
app
I don't know if wine uses xkb layout for keys, it seems it does not, so it is
hard to tell for me what would be the best solution to add just a miminal
complexity.

WoW crash dump
When I got the ...
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x2116acd0 "rtl.c:
RTL_RWLOCK.rtlCS" wait timed out in thread 0019, blocked by 0000, retrying (60
sec)
... message I let WoW run its course. (I usually hit CTRL-C in the console to
enable a quick re-entry to the game).
After a while WoW crash and this is a dump from that crash, generated by WoW.
Hopefully it may contain information on how to resolve this issue...

Here's some of my research into this.
PokerTracker does not commit registration keys to Registry. They commit them
to an Access database in the Poker Tracker V2 folder. The filename is
ptregv2.mdb
So obviously, there's a problem reading from that database, which gives you the
+0.whatever product ID that mismatches when you try to load a second time.
Hope that helps any developers get a sense of what needs to be done to patch
wine to get this going.

Try native dinput.dll.
If it does not work, you need to fix the bug yourself. This will be a huge
task. Watch the wine devel mailing list. There are plenty of subjects related

Invalid for many reasons. Your wine version is extremely old. You are using
ies4linux, which we do not support. Please update to latest wine and remove

I'm using Mandriva Spring 2007 on a Sony Vaio laptop that's nearly 6 years old.
I'm running Wine 0.9.33.
The initial installation of Wine was from IES4Linux and since then I've added
Word, Excel & Powerpoint viewers.
Whenever I come to shutdown after using one of the above Wine applications I
find that it starts shutting down, gets to a black screen with the mouse cursor
still active and then hangs. The pc will not continue to shutdown until I move
the mouse cursor.
This hang only occurs when when a wine application has been used, otherwise it
will shutdown without any intervention.

with wine 0.9.54, performance is heavily affected by the pixel shader option
(without it, it is much faster). Though it is still slightly slower than in
wine 0.9.46 and the reflection problem doesn't go away....

I don't think that it has something to do with the graphic card. We had
different vendors and different cards (for example I have an intel graphic
card).
But there seam to be many poeple with ATI-Cards in this thread, this is right.
One more question to the success-stories in hear.
Does it only work by compiling wine (and changing one single line) becaus I
still get crashes with 0.9.53 but I use the ubuntu-binaries. 0.9.54 won't even
start Warcraft.

Now the header control handles the column reordering properly however the
listview still doesn't. The only difference is that we now reply TRUE to
HDN_ENDDRAG so the column change simply doesn't happen (see bug #11255) instead
of showing an inconsistent UI.

The MWT is used for selecting areas on the image. When pressing the ALT key, it
will subtract the new selected area from the main selection. This feature is
not working. When I press the ALT Key, the MWT cursor changes to display a
minus sing (-) below the wand, which indicates that the new selection will be
subtracted from the main selection (see screenshot:
http://download.erasmix.net/CS2-WINE/Screenshot-5.png), but when I click on the
area, nothing happens.
BTW, the opposite action, CTRL Key to add a new selection to the main selection
works OK.

Regression caused two problems... white screen but only in nVidia cards(was
fixed later Wine versions) and black screen(still happened in Wine 0.9.37)...
that black screen was still there when I tested it last time(on Wine 0.9.37) so
it's half-fixed.
I will try this again in this weekend hopefully.

Summary: Wine makes possible for windows virus to work?
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: PC

Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wineserver
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: tsalacinski(a)gmail.com
I know that it's too early to say this, but when Wine started to support Run
and RunOnce registry entries, I have few Windows worms on my computer (I've
been using ies4linux).
Is this possible, that when for example virus developer will think about
supporting Linux he will steal data? I think, yes.
As we know, wine have access to the whole drive (most users have / configured
as Z:\). If we have a virus installed in Run in the registry, and the virus
will look for every drive in the system (especially for Z:\) it can try to
detect if there is any Z:\home\[user] directory and it can steal data from it.
Virus devs can even try to compile their viruses with libwine to check if they
will work on Linux.

Hello,
I posted some fix for VS.NET 2003 prerequisite installer here:
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8439#c3

The same patch is needed in VS.NET 2005 prerequisite installer too, it fixes
the detection of MSXML 6.x component.

patch which fixes MSI_GetProductInfo to treat specific properties with correct
type
Hello,
another installer issue is msi's MsiGetProductInfoW() (MSI_GetProductInfo)
failing to treat specific properties of correct type.
By using default case of switch some values are accidentally read/interpreted
as strings.
This prevents prerequisite installers of VS.NET 2003 and 2005 from finishing
successfully.

Thank you, Vitaliy and Austin--that's a relief. After upgrading to Wine 0.9.54,
the installation went fine, and it either found my Office 97 disc or that
suggestion to bypass that entirely was taken, much to my happiness.
I'm a little bummed that the VBA editor didn't fire right up with no problems
(got a "Could not open macro storage" alert), but that's for another thread.
Many thanks to those who worked on and fixed this problem, from somebody who
it'll really help!

has since been no recurrence of this problem.

Tested this today. On a fresh new ~/.wine, the .net 2.0 downloads and installs
fine. Then it downloads mdac, and fails to install it (MDAC_TYP.exe), but i
think that's already covered by another app. Installing it manually with
winetricks (winetricks mdac28) works around this. Finally the app downloads and
installs jet40 and then completes successfully.
With the workarounds for starting .net apps in wine, I was able to start the
application, but then got a Microsoft Jet.OLEDB error, so i had to do
winetricks jet40, though the installer installed it already. Apparently this is
still a bug in the installer. After that, the app starts fine into the main

Actually it starts fine for me now in both normal mode and virtual desktop
mode, so this bug is fixed. I think it's fixed by Alexandre's patches moving
stuff back from server to user32, just before wine-0.9.54.

Yes, looks like the patch helped. I sent it to wine-patches.
Now the app crashes somewhere in its 16-bit code while accessing memory
at 0xffffffff. But that's not clear at all why, and the registers don't
tell anything useful to me.

My impression was that it was identified that this bug was triggered by one
of my patches (even if the way to run an application was incorrect).
To better understand what is going on in your case please generate
a +relay,+seh,+tid log, compress it with 'bzip2 -9' and attach it here.
Also, is that a regression?

There is a need for the regression test. This bug likely won't be fixed
without that information. Yes it's still a valid bug, as per comment #2.

I don't really think there is anything to be gained from more regression
testing. The need for the native .dll goes back a loooong way (to at least when
wine versions were labeled by the release date).
I did some regression testing on another bug a while ago which turned out to be
some problem with my install.
Other than needing native mscvrt.dll Turbocad works as noted in the app db and
no new bugs have appeared in more than a year (since at least version 0.9.28).
I'm currently using 0.9.44.
I see the app db needs updating, however...I will do that.
The installer works OK, the reports that it did not may have been in error or
may have been due to other causes.
I'm leaving this bug report as unconfirmed for now but I think it should be
changed to resolved.
The only outstanding issue at present is the need to use the native .dll. I
could start a new bug report just to record that the built-in .dll doesn't work
if you wish but this bug report should be put away as there is little to be
learned from it.

Using Wine 0.9.54 I can confirm that :
1) The demo installs just fine (it auto-downloaded gecko too which was nice)
2) The game requires d3dx9_30 which I put in windows/system
3) Once you try and run the game with the dll, it does crash. See attached log

Summary: X11 crash, reboot required
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: critical
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: steve10k(a)yahoo.com
Created an attachment (id=10542)
--> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=10542)
X11 configuration file
Greetings,
X11 crashes every time I try to open a Win32 executable with Wine.
I have no idea why, but purging and reinstalling, and downgrading,
make no visible difference. Apps tried include the installers for
Apophysis and Irfanview. The crash locks X11 - no keyboard or mouse
and the video freezes - 5 seconds or so into opening. This is happening
on a recently installed and upgraded Ubuntu installation with no other
obvious problems. The only way out of the locked up session is to hard
boot with the power switch.
The gory details:
Tested with Wine 0.9.53~winehq0~ubuntu~6.10.1
Tested with Wine 0.9.46~0ubuntu1
Both installed/etc using Synaptic
Environment:
Ubuntu 7.10
Linux 2.6.22-14-generic
Gnome 2.20.1
CPU AMD Semprom 2300+
Attached, in case it is of any use, is my xorg.conf file,
minus the commented out header...
I think this is about all I can report. This sounds like a unique local
problem, because I did not find anything similar reported previously and
it's a show stopper if/when it happens... but if not, maybe the data
will be of use.
:o)

Sorry, I am not following: regression to what? It is not an issue introduced
by a recent patch; the report of it working some time earlier was in error, it
has never rendered instruments properly, under any known version.
The fundamental problem is that the older 8-bit pallette schemes are not
supported by wine, or by an X11 library that wine calls.
Or am I missing something?

Hi everyone, Im fairly new to Linux and all that i was wondering, Well im using
a Gusty Gibbon with wine emulator version of 9.53 . So I spent couple minutes
each day reading this so i can try to get a private ragnarok server running.
The thing is i followed alot of things and got pretty far. Im at the log in
screen which makes me happy BUT! when i try to log in it cannot connect to
server. I tired using the Ip Tables trick with the iptraf or ethereal and
nothing is working..? This private server use's no data folder which is good
right...? its all in the .grf files. My friends own this server and they dont
know very much and cannot help me xD so please any suggestions? Thanks for
reading ~Hieu

I can't see one, Toni is the only person who appears to be able to reproduce
the issue on some, but not all computers he runs wine on. If it weren't for
this, based on the original bug report I would be inclined to call this bug
report invalid.

Log after applying latest patch
Thanks! Yep, it seems to have solved the null pointer pointer problem (I
think), as it gets a little further this time, but then it hangs at a different
spot.
It actually successfully opens a 3rd window now. After displaying "Please Wait"
(the 2nd window, titled "Untitled"), it opens a 3rd window (titled "Test
Delivery Application") overtop the first (main) window. But it appears to hang
before it's done painting that window -- it's just a blue box.
Let me know if you want me to try anything else. I'm willing to keep trying
patches and stuff as long as you still have an interest in solving this!
(Debugging 16-bit code sounds awfully boring though)
This looks pretty suspicious to me...
0012:err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x7b928b60 "syslevel.c:
Win16Mutex" wait timed out in thread 0012, blocked by 0016, retrying (60 sec)
0015:err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x7b928b60 "syslevel.c:
Win16Mutex" wait timed out in thread 0015, blocked by 0016, retrying (5 min)
Those are the last lines of the log, by the way, BEFORE I killed the process.
(So I probably shouldn't have even included the lines after that.)
Could the Win16Mutex code have a bug? Or maybe PPGRE was just poorly written.

The error described appears when running from the install/setup directory
because it tries to open install.win, if you copy install.win to the
install/setup directory you should find that the program will run without
issue.

says "I mostly need to run Paint Shop Pro 9 (doesn’t play nicely with
Wine...)"
so I tried the trial from oldversion.com. Heck, it doesn't
even install. It gets stuck on the first dialog.
The download unpacks to
.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Jasc Software Inc/Setup Files/English
PaintShopPro903 Jasc TRYANDBUY PCUESD
and you can just install the .msi file there to reproduce the problem.

then it just sits there, processing windows messages, but
not ever enabling the 'Next' button.
Seems msi-ish somehow.

Store the "managed" flag as a window property instead of the
Wine-specific WS_EX_MANAGED style bit.

Why is this marked as a regression? Did it work at some point? If so, please
run a regression test [1]. If not, then the regression keyword needs to be
removed.

Summary: Lotus Notes window disappears when using Compiz
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.53.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: ploum(a)fritalk.com
I'm using Lotus Notes hard client 7.0.2 with Wine 9.53 under Ubuntu 7.10 and it
works fine. I launch it from an icon in the Gnome panel.
Except if you enable Compiz.
If Compiz is enabled, Lotus Notes will start normally but, as soon as you
change your virtual desktop, the LN window will disappear. The processes are
still running so it seems to be only a matter of display.
If you run Lotus Notes from a gnome-terminal instance (instead of the
gnome-panel icon), the window will NOT disappear !
But, instead, the console will be constantly filled with :
err:win:DefWindowProcA called for other process window 0x10020
err:win:DefWindowProcA called for other process window 0x10020
err:win:DefWindowProcA called for other process window 0x10020
This take a lot of CPU but, besides this, Lotus Notes works normally.
This bug seems to be very common :

Wine 0.9.50 and on should have the fix. 0.9.54 is the newest, and unless you
have a good reason not to, is the version you should use.

It would give an idea of where to start looking, so yes. Run a regression test,
using nov 24 as the good and 0.9.54 as the bad. Or was Nov 24 also bad? If so,
regression testing wouldn't tell you too much, you'd need to know some point
where it worked...

My Half-Life 2 death match also crashes with Wine 0.9.54 after a seemingly
random amount of time. However, I have yet to try CSS or the font size hack
patch.

Yes. I still see the XFCE4 taskbar at the bottom of the screen while running
Wine 0.9.54 and fullscreen Half-Life 2 with the XFWM4 window manager. It also
affects me when I'm running Compiz with the Emerald window manager.

I can confirm the same problem on my machine:
-AMD Sempron64 3000+
-1 GB RAM
-ATI Radeon x600 [RV380]
It also happens when I alt+tab a bit too much. Happened since I got this new
card, suspect it has to do with the r300 series.
