If you set the keyboard to something without deadkey, for example the US one (setxkbmap us), you can enter the console from the menu by pressing <`>. Now if you set the keyboard to something with deadkeys, such as the US-International one (setxkbmap us -variant alt-intl), you can't enter the console anymore by pressing just <`>, you need to press AltGr+<`>. This happens because of the: if (XFilterEvent( &event, None )) continue; /* filtered, ignore it */ line in dlls/winex11.drv/event.c . It is completely discarding all deadkey keypresses; to solve the problem you need to let deadkey keypresses generate WM_KEYDOWN messages (and then, to not break the deadkey handling in wine, you have to catch and store the result of XFilterEvent to pass to the TranslateMessage function when it is eventually called to handle the WM_KEYDOWN; this is what my patch tries to do, although it will fail to correctly pass this information if either you have more than 10 keypress events, or two keypress events for the same key and different string results, before the program calls TranslateMessage). (combining it with your patch posted in bug 4923, which enforces that at all times there's at most one input event in the wine server queue, would theoretically solve my patch's failures, although I don't think that is the right way to proceed.) I tried doing exactly this, and performance is still really slow for the application (System Shock 2). This appears to be a regression as, I have tested the following wine-0.9.30 - jkdemo.exe loads, cutscene plays, menu has some graphics corruption when mouse pointer is passed over item, can load and play game. wine-0.9.31 - regression appears to occur here, jkdemo.exe crashes on startup wine-0.9.34 - starts to load, gives message "display must be set to more than 256 colors" and exits wine-0.9.35 - starts to load, gives message "display must be set to more than 256 colors" and exits wine-0.9.36 - crash on startup wine-0.9.40 - crash on startup wine-0.9.46 - crash on startup wine-0.9.47 - crash on startup wine-0.9.48 - crash on startup wine-0.9.49 - crash on startup wine-0.9.50 - same behavior as 0.9.51 I have attached the warn+all log for 0.9.51, if there are any other logs or testing required, please let me know. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Just for the info, i sent that "patch(try3)" to wine-patches long time ago, and if IRC Alexandre said it was basically correct, but he wanted to know the deeper cause of these crashes (so as to if the bug was coming from another place inside wine). Apparently not, so time this gets fixed. I could send the patch again, but the fix outlined by you in the end ( so in gdi32.StretchDIBits()) looks better to me as well. I'll see if i can fix something together this weekend. There are many applications in the wild which use MFC either dynamically or (worse) statically linked and can't be fixed - so wine needs to be fixed. As already pointed out by someone, the problem lies in the internal MFC function AfxLoadSysColorBitmap() (utility function of CToolbar class) which doesn't handle toolbar bitmap resources > 256 colors correctly. The "bits" data pointer which is given as argument to StretchDIBits() gets incorrectly calculated resulting in invalid pointer. Basically it adds bitmap info header offset and size of color table Pseudo code: ofs = header.biSize + (1 << header.biBitCount)*sizeof(RGBQUAD) This doesn't work for 24 bit bitmap resources nowadays found in many apps. When windows encounters such invalid "bits" pointer it doesn't process the data at all and returns 0 lines converted. Obviously wine needs to do the same within the gdi32.StretchDIBits() call. The invalid pointer value has high bits set, as result from buggy ((1 << 24)*4 + heap_pointer + sizeof(bitmapheader) calculation. Validating the pointer value by looking at address bits doesn't make much sense so put SEH somewhere in code path, like in x11 driver's X11DRV_DIB_SetImageBits() outlined in patch(try3). If you have a problem with x11 driver stuff wrapped in SEH (= might hide other app bugs) you might consider an alternative solution, aimed at that specific API function itself. It's the only API function called with this buggy data from MFC, so a short "probe" read of "bits" in gdi32.StretchDIBits() to detect buggy MFC might be sufficient. The advantage of such "short circuit" probe read in StretchDIBits() would be that in case of encountering this bug it doesn't need to go all the way into x11 driver with locks and validating/converting just to end up in page fault when doing x11 bits transfer... and as said, it doesn't hide other app bugs from different API which use might use X11DRV_DIB_SetImageBits too. Anyway the problem is known and all that is left is some decision where to place the SEH guard. I have been using MS wordview 2003 without problems for several wine version, I'm fairly certain it worked for 0.9.46. After upgrade to 0.9.48 wordview 2003 aborts, reporting insufficient memory or disk space. This occurs whether or not I am opening a file. I have deleted and recreated the WINEPREFIX used for wordview, and the same error remains. I am running MS IE6 in a different WINEPREFIX and it seems to be fine. The logs hint at a problem mapping my home directory wine_nt_to_unix_file_name L"(None)" not found. I have 1 GB RAM and 14GB free under /home and /tmp respectively. All apps were recently working perfectly, I love wine. I recently installed a new motherboard, recompiled my kernel to accomodate for it and upgraded the kernel from 2.6.17 to 2.6.22 x86_64 I re installed the nvidia driver and that worked fine, glxgears and beryl runs great. Even have the SB XFI drivers running now. I followed the http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit#head-7f9ba30a115acb6bc6feef3ee48cd06e91d… Things to note, the emul xlibs are no longer installed at /emul/linux/x86/usr/lib/ they are in /usr/lib32 I believe this is similar to debian. I've attached the backtrace log. I haven't a clue why it won't work, I've tried custom compiling four different versions of wine, I've tried more than one app (Never Winter Nights and WoW ) the backtrace below is for World Of Warcraft.
