I cannot reproduce this on 0.9.52.
There are however some graphical bugs in the editor, but that is a different
bug.
I cannot see which version the original report owner has,
but the one i tried was version 2008:1
Maybe the bug has been fixed, or the upgrade of the program
fixed it.

well, you are right. After receiving your comment, i plugged my lcd screen to
my laptop. And executed game from my laptop. Problem remains the same. It is
not related with widescreen.
Checked the settings with laptop and desktop, 1024x768 both, 32bit color , even
60Hz both. Both have Nvidia Gpus. And both pcs are using WinXp service pack2.
Ah, both games are upgraded to v1.1 also.
What else we can try?

Works fine in win98 mode. I don't think it's copy protection, but probably
something similar to 3dmark when running in win2k/xp mode, it's trying to get
info from ntoskrnl about memory/mainboard/drivers/etc. Launching it in win2k
mode after disabling ntoskrnl and winedevice allows it to work (the error still
pops up, but the information isn't blank).

Created an attachment (id=9955)
--> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=9955)
workaround for DS2
Could you try this workaround? The behavior should be more like native
msvcrt.dll. There seems to be other errors that we should fix later (I
concentrate first on this one). Just try if it is the same behavior like the
native msvcrt.dll and put a report which works like that and which doesn't.
Because I don't know if I found all bad cases.
I will write a patch (not only a workaround like this) but this could take a
while.

Tested in 0.9.52 - I can't see any screen redraw error, the only error wine
reports endlessly is:
fixme:cursor:CURSORICON_LoadFromFile No support for .ani cursors.
It seems this program loops endlessly trying to load a cursor. Since this is
not the original bug that was reported, perhaps this should be closed?

This bug does not occur on these releases, I think this bug can be marked as

This game appears to work almost flawlessly on 0.9.52.
I think we can mark this as fixed.
I tested sitting at the main menu for a few minutes and also playing the game,
there are some very slight discoloration of 1-2 objects in the game. ie a
basketball turns a mix of white and yellow and there is a door in the game that
has a fluro haze to it.
If anyone else wishes to test this, be aware that the game does pause for about
30 seconds while loading and does not give any indication that anything is
happening, just have some patience.

You can make an interesting change in the behavior if you
symlink WinBootstrapper.msi from the
c:\Program Files\Common
Files\Adobe\Installers\2ac78060bc5856b0c1cf873bb919b58

The change is that you stop with the Exit 4, and instead get an infinite
loop where it works over and over to start setup...

Well I was able to reproduce a random crash in 0.9.51 and 0.9.52, it was due to
memory and palette handle leaks (eventually running out of resources) and
usually happened in 5-20 min of play, regardless of any actions (even when
simply standing there without movement). I believe I fixed it, and the fixes
are now in git
http://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git?a=commit;h=83fe4e77f5bfda822688906c0c…http://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git?a=commit;h=9dbdacbd824189fafe6d880757…
With these fixes, there are no constant leaks every frame anymore. I tried
leaving it running for the night and it did fine.
Although, from what I'm seeing, it may still be leaking some memory when
loading the level and then exiting to the menu (i.e. some level resources like
maybe textures or something else are not being properly freed). The latter
problem could even be a bug in AVP1, it needs more research (I plan to work on
that a bit later).
So, either this bug should be closed or renamed to something more generic like
AVP1 memory leaks, I'm not sure which is better.
p.s. the original reporter's problem may or may not have been the same one I've
seen (and fixed) - from the information available I'm unable to say, although
except this bug I've seen no other stability issues in AVP1 as of 0.9.52 + my
patches (links above).

If I run wine without changes (out of the box):

die like it normally should (as described in post #0 in the point "First")
If I run wine with the native msvcrt.dll:
- the dead enemy fall
So could you try if the native msvcrt.dll works for you, like it does for me?

I don't think that this is a d3d bug. Apparently the game already sends
incorrect draw calls to d3d, and the problem occurs in the game logic(the
incorrect attack speed and attacking dead enemies suggest that).
Direct3D and DirectDraw don't do animations. They only think in "draw a
triangle here" or "clear this part of the screen" actions. Animations have to
be maintained by the applications or other libraries(e.g. quartz).
That doesn't necessarily mean that the bug is not in d3d. A bad return value
from a d3d call, or capability flags that confuse the game might break the game
logic. I think this is unlikely though. The best way to tell is to compile the
d3d libs for Windows and run the game on Windows with Wine's D3D libs. If the
bug occurs in that setup, it is a d3d bug. If it doesn't, it is a bug in some
other part of Wine.

About widescreen/normal screen: It could be related, but generalising based on
a single case is not good. I don't have widescreen (I believe it's 17'', and
for sure it's 1024x768) and have pinkish text. I also don't have distortion you

Summary: WINE Steam using 100% of CPU when its doing nothing
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.51.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: vektuz(a)cox.net
This is a recent development. When I run STEAM, it starts normally albeit
slowly, and then eats 100% CPU (on this single core machine) for its entire
lifetime. No matter which tab is displayed. This is a relatively new
development, and occurs for me both on Compiz native, and VMWare virtualized
installtions of Ubuntu/WINE 0.9.51 w/ Gnome.
I remember this working fine a couple builds ago, round about 0.9.48-ish.
As for clues to why this happens, I spoke to Valve about this behavior, and it
was suggested that it was polling to refresh the window very rapidly. I can
reproduce the behavior on Windows by running Steam on a remote windows machine
and using VNC (for example) to view it. It polls the window causing rapid
redraw, and results in 100% CPU on the remote computer whenever the VNC window
is being displayed. I'm posting this merely to indicate this might be a clue
as to why it happens. Its pretty disruptive when it does, because even if you
run a game via steam, it hogs the CPU. You have to essentially 'nice' it down
to background priority before the game runs smoothly.
This doesn't seem to stop you from actually running games/software, so its not
a critical bug, I suppose, but I figured I'd better submit it here because it
happens, and its new, and it didn't happen before.

I agree with ph, the transparent colors are pink in the game which is annoying.
I thought this was an OS problem but it is not. It is not also related with
resoltion, cpu and gpu power, ram is not even the case. any single Compability
options work for a solution.
First i tried on my laptop acer 5920G (With Vista, 8600GT Gpu, core 2 duo
2,4Ghz) The text are pink, and pinks and other letters are clear and scrolling
is somehow slower than usual (it is annoying, and there are no options for
speeding up scrolling) but the rest is ok.
Then i thought it was because of Vista so i tried it on my ex-laptop Hp
Pavillion 5827EA (With Xp Sp2, 7400 Go GPU, core duo 1,8 GHz) The text were
pink and also other letters are distorted (pop-up text for options, map, end
turn etc) So distorted that they are barely readable. However, scrolling is
normal, which makes the game more playable.
Then i tried it on my desktop pc, (an AMD64 3500Mhz cpu with 1GB ram, Nvidia
Geforce 6150 (on board) with Xp Sp2), guess what? The pink is gone, transparent
color is restored and scrolling is fine. But this time, again the bottom
letters (and graphics) are still distorted.
There is something i never thought about, the screen shape. My all laptops are
widescreen (15,4") and desktop is not (19") So i believe it is a matter of
screen shape. But in anyway i am not able to understand the distortion of
bottom graphics.

I've also tried on an i386 box: same error
If I could be of any help, let me know

Just for updating this bug, this is still a problem in 0.9.52.
I also do realized that 'Word Wrap' is always enabled in the RTF box, even if I
disabled the flag for it; this of course it's not a problem on Windows.

Summary: [regression] wine does not set the default mode after
exiting games
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.5.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-x11driver
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: drago01(a)gmail.com
I was using wine 0.9.49 until today and was playing the game Prey with it.
It was working fine but I was using 1280x1024 as game resultion while using
1680x1050 for the desktop (native tft resultion). Today I updated to wine
0.9.51 and later 0.9.52 (both have the same issue). The problem is that now
when I quit Prey the resultion stays at 1280x1024 while with previous wine
releases it reverted back to the desktop resultion (as it should).
I get this error message on exit:
"err:x11settings:X11DRV_ChangeDisplaySettingsEx Default mode not found!"
I googled a bit and was unable to find a solution but I found this patch:
http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.emulators.wine.patches/43668
which seems to have broke it because there is no registry key for the default
mode . I tryed removing .wine and let wine create a new one but it does not
change anything.
What was the reason behind this patch anyway? Why should the default mode be
something different than that that was set before wine changed the mode?

There do seem to be some issues in git wine (~0.9.52). No total freezes, but
every few seconds there's a very annoying 1-3 second freeze when navigating the
main menu, where this video plays in background. The game then unfreezes and
proceeds as normal, but something is very wrong if there are such lags in a
game this old on a relatively modern hardware.

This is getting strange. If the gnome terminal is under the wine desktop, after
switching between virtual desktops, usually the text from the terminal can be
seen in the bottom of the circuit maker window. However, if nautilus or firefox
is below the wine desktop, the window is drawn normally.

Hmm. There may be some problem. It's not like it doesn't remember resolutions
all the time. But one time I catched this situation (0x0x0 in video settings
and it was crashing when trying to start a game). In addition, it appeared like
sometimes some resolutions disappear from the choice list and there are some
very weird, non-standart ones. It could be that sometimes, something goes wrong
with its detection of available video modes, some modes are not detected and
then, if the currently "remembered mode" is missing from the list of detected,
it sets 0x0x0, or something like that. Needs more research to be sure.
DirectDraw HAL - sounds quite legit, it's DirectX6, D3D was kind of part of
DirectDraw back then.
Mouse - probably "mouse cursor not blanked" bug.

You have to test the bug with latest Wine release, not Crossover.
This is a WineHQ bugzilla, not a Crossover one.

I'm assuming that an entirely new winhlp32.exe has to be written. If not,
disregard the rest.
I'm not 100% sure of the licensing on this (it's listed as freeware in the
included text file). It is a .hlp decompiler with c source. Included is (what
seems to be) a full explanation of the .hlp format (I couldn't find the format
anywhere else). I have no idea where to find it on the internet (After I
installed MS VC++6, a friend gave it to me to help him with documentation for
one of his programs). Wikipedia says that .hlp is a proprietary format, so I'm
not sure of the standing on explanations of the format. If it interests anyone,
I'll attach it (but I won't now because of the first argument up there).
