sound during the installer, so could be a good sign.

Wild guess: the off screen bitmap is not initialized to any color by program,
and defaults to black in Wine and something else in Windows.

What is the status of this patch. I have several applications that fail to
install with a long list of fixme: and it looks like an infinite loop like
described here. The current solution is to get a copy of riched20.dll from a
working Windows installation. Does this patch need an closer examination for
implementation?

This should fix all apps that expect 32 from GetDeviceCaps(BITSPIXEL). I don't
know if there are any other causes of 32 bit confusion, but if there aren't
any, then yes, it should fix all those bugs.
It will not fix 15/16 bpp confusion, but it should be easier to fix now.
I am waiting for the first regression reports to come in...

Yay! Easy Grade Pro really is a fantastic gradebook program, enough so that I
suffer through the black boxes and use it anyway. But my life would be much
friendlier if I could read the assignment labels.
I can confirm that all other software features that I use seem to work fine (it
does hang on printing sometimes, but I'm content to blame that on cups if that
sounds most logical).
Thanks for all the fantastic work.

Looks like some handmade rotated text rendering. Notice that the vertical
text in the small summary window, which is rotated in the normal way by
asking for a font with lfEscapement == 900 is rendered correctly.
In contrast the vertical cells are created by rendering *horizontal* text
into a separate bitmap and then blitting the bits back into the original dc.
Somewhere in that process things go wrong, given that disabling the BitBlt
calls makes the black squares disappear.

First of all,
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ROLLBACK OR UNINSTALL YOUR DIRECTX.
IT JUST DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY.
Reverting back to previous versions of DirectX, I assure you,
will not solve the problem
but will just mess up your Operating System.
Secondly,
BEFORE RESORTING TO GIVING UP YOUR CURRENT GRAPHIC CARDS
AND BUYING NEW ONES,
try this possible solution first.
THE ONLY REASON WHY THE ERROR MESSAGE
"..Unable to intialize DirectX..."
APPEARS IN WARCRAFT IS THAT
DIRECT3D ACCELERATION IS DISABLED
(even if your graphics card is direct3d-capable)
or IS JUST SIMPLY NOT SUPPORTED BY YOUR GRAPHICS CARD.
To know if it's disabled,
type dxdiag in the run command.
Go to Display tab.
Check DirectDraw and Direct3d acceleration.
Status of these two must be "Enabled" and is clickable.
If it's not, then your Direct3d is indeed disabled,
which prohibits warcraft from running.
SO THE QUESTION NOW IS, HOW DO YOU ENABLE DIRECT3D? Simple.
Just go to Display Properties (from the Control Panel),
then click Settings tab,
and then click Advanced button.
Look for the tab where "Hardware acceleration" is present
(in most cases, it's in the Troubleshoot tab).
Drag the indicator to Full.
Click Apply and OK.
Just to be safe, restart your PC again.
Run Warcraft.

A large number of apps are affected by this bug. Just recently lots of d3d apps
got affected by it too. Apps directly affected by the bug and not through
wined3d are Quake Wars, Ikea kitchen designer (there is an opengl bug about it)
and there are some more. Before this bug gets closed some time in the future it
should be verified that those work too.

I just tested your patch but unfortunately the radiobutton is still garbled. I
noticed that when the window gets repainted (e.g. when you minimize and restore
the window) the radiobutton is painted correctly.
I applied the patch "manually". Could you please give me a link to a
documentation that shows how to save/apply patches from the wine-patches list?
I searched myself but only found documentation about how to send a patch. I
really want to save developer's time...

Nominating for 1.0, as some popular apps (uTorrent)

ntdll: Better support for NT path names in wine_nt_to_unix_file_name.
Don't map NT namespace 1:1 to Unix, add a magic \??\unix device instead.
More generic support for \??\ devices, with fallback to the wineserver
for paths that don't exist.

that might be a problem. The game seems to be constantly switching between
software and hardware processing :/.

everything I did so far is catching the segfault in winedbg and hit disas. That
is enough to guess the functions in the vtable and the number of parameters. No
windows code involved.

btw. at least here the function is loaded via GetProcAddress so the comment to

I'm also having the same problem.
I did this:
wine JediOutcast.exe &> /tmp/setup_log.txt
The output is attached.
The setup show a dialog with this output:
An error occurred while parsing command linearguments or reading Setup.ini
(0x80030070)
On a general note regarding wine:
It seems that there are more and more regressions with each new version.
Hopefully this trend will reverse soon. I am not ungrateful, just concerned.
Please don't let this bug linger.
Cheers.

Oh indeed, the sdk says it is internal and should not be used. That will be
tricky. Note that we must not look at the windows code to find out what it
does. We can try to find out what it does by writing tests, and looking at what
Sim2 wants.
> Demo is still completely unusable though because of rendering errors(most
> notably the sim isn't rendered at all).
Could be because of the shader constant problems. Does Sims2 ever set anything
else but 0/0/0/0 to any constant > 224?

Created an attachment (id=9659)
--> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=9659)
some hacks that allow the demo to start
three problems identified so far:
1) as mentioned in comment #18 it tries to set 1024 vertex shader constants.
d3d9 allows up to 8192 constants in software vertex processing mode so that
request should be valid. As it seems there isn't really a "software processing
mode" in wined3d (right?), so for now just ignore any constants beyond the ones
that wined3d and the hw supports. Here it is just used to initially set these
constants to zero so it shouldn't cause too much trouble.
2) next problem is that GetDepthStencilSurface() fails with D3DERR_NOTFOUND.
What happens is:
CreateDevice() called with AutoDepthStencil=true
SetDepthStencil(NULL)
Reset() called with AutoDepthStencil=true
GetDepthStencilSurface() is expected to return something.
Not sure what the proper fix is here. Just reassign the stencilBufferTarget to
existing auto_depth_stencil_buffer as done in the patch or create a new one ?
3) segfault because of missing export Direct3DShaderValidatorCreate9().
Sadly this function seems to be completely undocumented :(.
Demo is still completely unusable though because of rendering errors(most
notably the sim isn't rendered at all).

I have been running wine with the patch (as posted in this thread) with version
0.9.39, I tried upgrading to 0.9.47 and have also tried 0.9.51 - this is with
mandriva 2007 - I built 0.9.47 from source (and also tried the rpm), with
0.9.51 I just tried the rpm. I'm trying to run terragen2 www.planetside.co.uk
With 0.9.39 (patched) it runs pretty successfully; with the more recent
versions (which I haven't patched!!) I briefly see the main window before the
application exits with the following message
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 145 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
GLX is enabled but I am running the nvidia driver
Without the patch in 0.9.39 terragen ran ok - though with lots of flashing of
child windows, with the latest version it doesn't run at all.

Summary: winecfg and wine delete cdrom from drives when audio cd
inserted before
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.51.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: c72578(a)yahoo.de
If an audio cd is inserted into the cdrom drive and winecfg is started
afterwards, then the necessary symbolic link to the cdrom is deleted by wine
automatically, without user interaction and the cdrom is not available any
more. The cdrom is mounted in this case.
Example:
e: -> /media/cdrom0
is deleted from ~/.wine/dosdevices/
The same happens if a wine application is started while an audio cd is present
in the drive.
Expected behavior: wine should not delete a symbolic link to a drive unless the
button "Remove" is used from the winecfg drives tab.
Remark:
e:: -> /dev/hdc
is not deleted automatically in this case

OK, I found out why this patch failes:
1) Saving the HTML page changes the character '&' to the string "&"
2) The following lines have leading tabs
DeleteObject(clipRegion);
clipRegion=NULL;
Even if the tabs are in the original patch they are lost when saving the HTML
page or when creating a new patch file by copy & paste from the webpage.
To make everybodys life easier I would recommend to attach the patch to the
bugreport.

The workaround from bug 7954 applies here as well:
$ rm -rf .wine

$ cd .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/KOBOLD/shoai.80/

The office runtime is probably key here, since the app wants to
open an MS Access file called KLM.mdb (Kobold License Manager?)
on startup.

I have the same issue. I am running a pretty clean install of Ubuntu 7.10, with
Wine 0.9.51 and uTorrent 1.7.5.
I completely lost the GUI and systray icon for uTorrent, though just as Dan
Wilcox reported it was running and actually completing downloads.
I was able to restore the GUI by deleting Settings.dat in
~/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/username/Application Data/uTorrent.
Not sure if it will keep working.

I've been helping sponsor some work on Wine for the last year
or two. The way I go about it is
a) be a fairly good wine developer and do lots of QA
myself, so I can direct the work intelligently;
b) hire interns to work on subsystems that are obviously
important but not obviously urgent (e.g. widl, com/ole, msi,
gdiplus, crypt32, bits). This only works because of (a) above,
and because my company looks on hiring interns as a recruiting
expense.
c) hire codeweavers to work on apps that are important to
my company (e.g. picasa).
But that's kind of big-time.
More commonly, Codeweavers fixes the bugs that the average
Crossover user runs into.
That's why Microsoft Office bugs get fixed - because jillions
of Crossover users need it, and because Crossover users pay
for support.
So if you're an individual or small business looking to
support Wine, but who can't work on the code directly,
often the simplest way to do it is to
buy Crossover licenses.

This is discussed quite often, but there is no real bugfix bounty system. The
problem with it is that getting a bug fixed is quite expensive in the end. At
codeweavers we have some metric that fixing a minor bug costs us between
1000-1500 USD, which is way too much for a user to offer for a bugfix.
One might argue that such bounties sum up, but unfortunately, everyone wants a
different bug fixed. The problem of Wine is that it has such a broad aim, so
everyone has different problems he wants fixed.
So my personal way of dealing with this is that if I do not have any specific
apps to get running, I'm implementing missing features without focusing on
specific application, or I am picking random bugs, but that is rather rare
though.

Ok. The category names confused me.
Thanks for your explanation.

I know. I work on free software projects of my own.
I did not mean to order anyone to do anything.
Through my vote and comment I meant to suggest to change the status
(based on a wrong understanding of the categories),
and morph the current workarounds in a fix available for default wine.

This is one of the main problems with wine for me.
I do not have the time to try to fix wine bugs myself.
More so since I tried to invest time once to do that,
but my patches remained out of tree (which is fine by itself),
but I did not reach an open, satisfying discussions about the
issues underlying them.
So say I want some bugs fixed (not workarounds, but
fixes in order to make the api behave as the MS implementation),
by paying wine developers to do that.
I think there _is_ a company behind wine. So do you have
anything in place? Is paying for each bug enough to
generate the commercial interest in fixing them?
> In case of this bug, it's a combination of all 3 issues.
My main interest is for vanilla wine to be better, as I see Wine
as a powerful tool to facilitate the move towards free software.
But it has a long way to go to reach the level of compatibility
with the win32 API I (and I guess many others) would like to see.

Would you happen to know what about the kernel could cause this (e.g. some
specific module or range of modules?). Since all non-stock modules (for a
default Debian kernel) that I've got loaded is an nVidia GFX driver. And I'm
using the same driver @ my laptop where WINE doesn't exhibit this issue.

Downloading & installing the GS Arcade through IE makes program run perfectly
Note:
I have installed IE this way
http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Es/Instalaci%C3%B3n
If you do the same you must take on care that IE creates its own wine drive
folders, so you must put your folder games on it
For example...
I had some game on
/home/USER/.wine/drive_c/Archivos de programa
Then you must copy it on
/home/USER/.ies4linux/ie*/drive_c/Archivos de programa
ie* where * is the number of Internet Explorer version you want to use (I only
could run GS at 100% with Internet Explorer 6)

I have done a +relay+seh+tid log on startup when trying to connect to the

http://alex.seewald.at/files/log.seh_relay_tid.gz . Attached are dmesg (which
shows that the TomTom was found in Linux) and the configure log (showing that
wine has all dependencies, which was a problem earlier).

Stefan/Paul's patch updated to apply cleanly to 0.9.51
I updated my previous update of Stefan/Paul's patch to 0.9.51, having noticed
that after 5 new revisions of wine, the problem has not been resolved on the
computer I am testing this on.
FWIW, I'm using an NV31 [GeForce FX 5600] video card and "nvidia" xorg driver
(Debian version of kernel module is 100.14.19-1+2.6.22-4, Debian version of
nvidia-glx package is 100.14.19), running on an Intel Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.80GHz
with 768MB memory.
I still have the reversion to the slow speed after navigating through the menus
or loading a game (i.e. there only seems to be a speed increase after starting
a new campaign), but the patch at least results in some improvement.
This happens when I am *not* using DirectDrawRenderer=opengl and
RenderTargetLockMode=readtex. I can't load RA2 at all when using those settings
(tested with and without this patch).

I meant to add that my video card is an "nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX
5200] (rev a1)" on AGP 8x (PCI id 10de:0322, sold as a LeadTek WinFast A340),
drivers 100.14.19, latest Ubuntu Gutsy. This is sufficient for Compiz's
"nvidia" method (though I don't have compiz enabled); can someone confirm this
is sufficient for the supposed fix for this bug and that the fix is in current
git?

The latest Valve Hammer Editor from Steam was still broken with current git as
of yesterday. As soon as a file is created or opened, whichever view I
mouse-over (possibly click) the real position of, whether it's 2D or 3D (even
if none of them are 3D) that view is drawn perfectly in the top-left of the
main top-level window of Hammer, and the rest of the window is black. I have
tried enabling "independent windows" in Hammer's preferences (i.e. one view per
child window, rather than a 4-way splitter); I have tried maximising the child
window; I have also tried some earlier Wine versions (0.9.50, 0.9.34); none of
these appear to make a difference. I have not tried earlier Hammer versions (I
want to make maps for HL2 not HL1).

Thanks for explaining. Given that info, and looking at your previous attempt,
I'll try to poke at it myself. Maybe I can see the WM_MDIACTIVATE calls in the
traces...
Truthfully, this bug is easy for me to avoid. I'm seeing tons of CombineRgn()
== nil calls (or something like that) as well. That one is what crashes me most
often.

I'm experiencing the same problem: after a few seconds the game freezes the
system, and I have no choice but to hard-reboot the computer. I remember having
the same freezes (most of the time it was even reboots) when I was playing the
game on Windows, however it happened rarely. Under wine it does it every time.
Here is some info:
$ uname -a
Linux debian 2.6.23.9-custom5 #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Dec 11 12:04:49 CET 2007 i686
GNU/Linux
$ glxinfo | grep -i open
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Radeon X1900 Series
OpenGL version string: 2.1.7059 Release
OpenGL extensions:
$ glxinfo | grep -i direct
direct rendering: Yes
$ wine --version
wine-0.9.44
Wine exited with a successful status
Also, I'm using the fglrx drivers 8.43.2 along with the kernel source module
for 3D-accel (from the official Debian Lenny repository). The freeze happens
both with OpenGL rendering and DirectX rendering (haven't try software
rendering though), both in fullscreen and windowed mode.
Any help on solving this issue will be greatly appreciated :-)

Hi Boris, uhm... I'm not good with debugging info, so I'll leave that to
someone else. But, do you use a correct crack? ('cause I think the game needs
that even if you have the original version)
If you don't use a crack, find one for your version of the game! (or patch to
the version you have the crack for :P)
To make sure your crack works, just run the game on that Windows PC you're
talking about.
(as for me, I think I HAD to install the game in Windows and than copy the
instal dir to Wine in order to make the game run... and, of course, I also used
a crack)
Hope this helps. Good luck!

To trigger the buggy behaviour, log in as a guest, which will give you a handle
of the form "guest1234". Then send yourself a message from the main console
(with the "tell" command) that ends in a URL, with no subsequent characters
before the end of line, for example:
tell guest1234 www.example.com
Notes:
1. Version is Blitzin2.34.
2. Wine must be set to Win95 to install it.

No, I have everything I need, including the knowledge what the problem is.
Now I just need more free time to work on this.
Basically to solve the problem we need to avoid sending WM_MDIACTIVATE

The closing/opening of steam to get a "clean shutdown" never worked for me,
there were ALWAYS errors after "shutting down..." I was unable to start TF2
unless I ditched by blob. If you would like to keep your cache, however, try
this workaround: In Steam->File->Settings -> Interface Tab -> Skin, change the
skin and say okay to the restart dialog. Clean restart every time.

I think that this is why Pirates of the Burning Sea doesn't pass the initial
check either (point 1 of the list of possible reasons it doesn't want to
startup is that there's no 32bit).

Steam output during lockup
Sometimes, when I've been playing Team Fortress 2 with no problems for anywhere
from 10 minutes to several hours, the game will suddenly lock up; it goes into
a state where the video freezes and the last half second or so of audio
repeats. At this point my CPU is redlined, and gnome is generally unresponsive.
The only thing I can do to get out of it is switch to a text console and
killall -9 hl2.exe.
I've attached Steam's output when this happens.
I looked at bug 7698, and I don't think this is that problem as that seemed to
be concerning hard crashes rather than locked up processes.

I can confirm that this happens to me as well. I've got a GeForce 7600 Go btw.
When starting up in a terminal I first get a load of messages stating:
"err:d3d:getColorBits Unsupported format: WINED3DFMT_A4R4G4B4" followed by
"err:d3d:IWineD3DImpl_IsPixelFormatCompatibleWithRenderFmt Unable to check
compatibility for Format=WINED3DFMT_A4R4G4B4".
Then when I click yes I want to continue with this (unsupported) video card the
rendering window moves to the left bottom corner of my desktop (about 25-50 px
square). Plus wine starts spitting out D3D/OpenGL error messages. Most of them
(if not all) look like this: "fixme:d3d:unloadNumberedArrays >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
GL_INVALID_ENUM (0x500) from glDisableVertexAttribArrayARB(reg); @ state.c /
2688".
If you would like me to perform some kind of debugging, please ask.

Summary: wineprefixcreate, winecfg, programs all fail with errors
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.50.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED

AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: eckhaus1(a)comcast.net
Created an attachment (id=9442)

Errors from wineprefixcreate and winecfg
After upgrading my working 0.9.49 from the OpenSUSE Build Service to 0.9.50,
the attached errors resulted when running wineprefixcreate or winecfg.
I uninstalled and reinstalled same. I renamed my ~./wine and wineprefixcreate
had the same errors but had managed to create a new ~./wine directory and
files. Since it hadn't fixed anything I replaced it with my original version
as it will be nice to keep my installed stuff once/if Wine works again.
I tried uninstalling Wine and compiling 0.9.50. Same results. I did make
uninstall and tried compiling the previous 0.9.49 version of which at least the
SUSE packaged version had been working previously, but the same errors
resulted.
I make uninstalled that and reinstalled the SUSE package from YaST 0.9.50 with,
of course, the same errors.
I've tried my programs and all do not run, with the exception of winefile which
opens and shows fine for some reason. The wineprefixcreate and winecfg just
offer the error messages attached.
Judging by the messages, is this a Wine bug or something wrong with my system
configuration? All my Linux software works fine. No problems at all.
In case you're wondering I did try setting compiz-manager to not load at
startup and changing xorg.conf to not have the composite extension running.
That just resulted in fewer lines in the error messages but Wine still would
not work. So I put my Compiz Fusion back so I can use it normally as always.
I hadn't had any problems with running my Wine stuff until yesterday's upgrade,
but then I hadn't run anything with it for a few days. See:
http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=42750
for a discussion thread I started in the forum, hoping to get any advice. I
give more details as far as how I keep my system upgraded daily there. I'd
think it would be newer Linux software changing how Wine works (breaking it),
but why then would everything else work. Nothing I install is from Factory or
experimental repos, although I do use many backport repos for OpenSUSE 10.3
from the Build Service and use Packman OpenSUSE 10.3 packages for my
multimedia.
Here's hoping something is obvious based upon those backtraces and you can help
me fix the problem.

For the old Borland products like Delphi and bcbuilder the integration of the
help in the IDE to look up component properties made the product what it was. I
just checked how help is working in Delphi 1 and Delphi 3 and it is much better
then the pre 0.9 wine but not usable yet. But no page faults.

--- Comment #38 from Kirill K. Smirnov <lich(a)math.spbu.ru> 2007-12-10 09:37:00 ---
Yes, this is a really problem.
Currently there are five main issues with winhelp:
1) Very slow processing. Now winhelp reads entire file into memory and
decompresses
all topics in the file. It takes a lot of time with large files, e.g. win32.hlp
by Borland - I could not wait until it finishes on
Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00GHz 1Gb RAM.
2) Lack of index and contents. These most important features are missing.
3) Now winhelp uses its own renderer instead of richedit. Since help files are
compiled from rtf, it is naturally to use riched20 library to display help.
Unfortunately, riched20 is not complete.
(Also usage of riched20 allows to select and copy text).
4) Lots of undocumented features to support. The most complete documentation of
this format i use (by Manfred Winterhoff at
http://www.geocities.com/mwinterhoff) is still incomplete and misleading in
some places (e.g. TOPICPOS).
5) winhelp is very obsolete help format to support. Even Vista itself does not
support .hlp files. IMO very few people really need this (i may be wrong).
I'm going to fix some of these bugs (maybe index/contents) in the near future.

Problem was game was not working. I got message:
err:module:import_dll Library GLU32.dll (which is needed by
L"Z:\\home\\shared\\GAMES_win\\Action Ball\\Action Ball\\actionball.RWG") not
found
Installing development files is solution.
I think you should add notice in 'configure' script about absence of needed
library for this dll too.
(in my case needed package is libglu1-mesa-dev)
Application tested: Action Ball (game)
OS: Ubuntu 7.10 x86
---
p.s. I already fixed problem myself before I found package name in recommended
packages shell script for Ubuntu. So running configure script said nothing
about absence of needed development files, and 'recommended packages' page also
doesn't contain "libglu1-mesa-dev" package name - only script does.
---
p.p.s. Also you could add link to the recommended packages page
(http://wiki.winehq.org/Recommended_Packages) to README file in root source
directory.
Also you could fix 'recommended packages' page for my case.
