winedbg log
Since upgrading from Ubuntu Feisty to Gutsy, and so to wine 0.9.47, any wine
app crashes the X server, even winecfg. No response from the mouse nor the
keyboard (so no way to kill the process, must hard reboot). The kernel is still
responsive though.
Still crashing with 0.9.48 from winehq.
Other people have the same problem :

Screenshot of the missing fonts
Distro: Ubuntu Gutsy
Wine: 0.9.48 installed using the WineHQ APT Repository
(http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb). The same bug with the original
gutsy's .deb package
Picasa: 2.7 (build 37.3200.0). The same bug in older versions too.
Video Card: ATI Radeon Express 200M with the latest ATI 8.42.3 propriety
drivers. With the older drivers and the one that goes with Gutsy, the problem
still exists.
The names of the folders and files in the left and the right pane are not
visible (maybe they use the same color as background).
This can be seen with the original installs of Gutsy's Wine too.
Changing themes/colors in winecfg doesn't help.
Adding the Windows' fonts from the original MS Windows' fonts folder doesn't
help too.

IIRC, this was a Wine problem with all games that used 3D.
Either that or it was a driver problem. So it's either been fixed for a while
or you are having driver issues. Bug should be closed.

read it should be in ntddk.h, but wine does not have this include file. Anyone

> Does this break any specific application for you?
I have a related problem with CINEMA4D NET Render Client/Server on wine.
Initially, everything works like a charm. Clients connect to the Server, Server
distributes Renderjobs, Clients render images and send them back to the Server.
However, there is a little catch. The Server also provides a Webpage to control
the clients remotely. One of the features is a little button to restart a
client (Desperately needed, because Clients tend to slow down after a long
runtime).
Now, when i restart a client remotely by using the button on the webpage, it
shuts down and restarts. Upon restart, it tries to reuse the (still open?)
socket. Because this operation fails (Address already in use), the Client is
not able to reconnect to the server.
I will attach a commented winsock debug run of the sequence above.
After closing and restarting the client on the local machine, the socket seems
to be free and the connection to the server works again.
Any thoughts?

It would be nice to clean it up so it's included.
The patch is not ready to go into the tree for more than a year, but compiles
and works as expected.
Thanks to Alexander for including this in 1.0 list.
It's nice to have a solution for problem at hand but compiling every release of
Wine only due to this one bug is not so exciting.

I doubt that a ripped patch should be used because it "just works" - we do not
know what the hunks failing exactly do.
I think that we should port the patch to git and send it to the Wine ML:
http://www.winehq.org/site/sending_patches I tried to do it, but I failed.

This bug is present using Metacity WM in Gnome as well as KDE and XFWM. This is
a clipping issue: the whole screen turns black except for one window each time
a directx window is updated, even if there has never been any fullscreen
windows.
Would it be possible to create a wrapper so that Java-dependent windows
applications can use the Linux native JRE and JDK correctly? It would prevent
this bug from occurring in Java programs and also save people from having to
download two full copies of Java. A proper fix would be necessary to stop this
behaviour from taking place with Quicktime.

document more fully as new bug reports.]
I can now use this application for general viewing of the forms; but for the
following problems (this app works on real W98 through XP -- not implying it's
good code; it's not! :-) :
1. copied fonts over from Windows (Tahoma seemed to be the one needed) and
display is now mostly OK except for fill-in fields -- some display entered
text; but most only display entered text when focus is in the field (see #5
below).
2. I'm still trying to find how to change display font size for this app; fonts
are too big (~150-200% of expected size).
3. printing forms mostly works except for:
a) bold fonts overflow; or subsequent text is not positioned beyond the extra
space require by previously bolded text. This problem only occurs on the
printed page; not the display.
b) 'Realtor' and 'Equal Housing' icons (never seen on display) are printed as
noise blocks.
4. printing one form (#415 Move-In Inspection) which contains what appears to
be several tables, crashes Wine.
5. examples of font issues:
RealFastLogin.jpg: note how registration info does not line up with field
names.
RealFastField.jpg: First field does not display "Sanford" when focus is not
on it.
RealFastField1.jpg: Here, one non-focused field displays "None" as
expected. The 'purchase price' field contains "100,000", yet does not display.

Crashes for me in wine 0.9.48 as well. If hardware acceleration is set to
emulation it no longer crashes. The graphics, however, were pretty messed up
for me, unless ran in a virtual desktop. After this, starts fine. Has some
other bugs to work out (mainly, bug 6971).
Confirming in wine 0.9.48, since it crashes with default wine settings.

Not quite. The installer complains that I don't have IE 5 or newer installed.
If you get around that (cabextract the exe, edit the install.ini file and
remove the DetectIE block, run install.exe), it goes farther, but eventually
dies when starting to install. If you use native mscoree.dll (which is among
the extracted files), then it seems to install.
Apps still don't work, though. They core dump due to CoGetObjectContext missing
from ole32.dll. Provide a stub for that, and a stack overflow occurs. That's as
far as I've got.

Yes, the hardware has limited support for programmable fragment processing.
Enough for ps_1_4 I think, but not enough for GL_ARB_fragment_program.
Obviously the Windows driver implements pixel shaders, but the windows driver
does not map to opengl. Just for us it is a very unfortunate situation.

No, this won't help. It doesn't have GL_ARB_fragment_program either, the card
just can't do that.

Okay; it must be implemented in the driver for windows because HL2 works just
fine there and doesn't experience any of these artifacts.
I should mention that I'm using the free radeon driver right now; perhaps I
should test with the fglrx driver and see if that is any better.

Yes, however the OpenGL limits screw this up on your card. The card supports
vertex shaders via GL_ARB_vertex_program just fine. The problem is that the
lowest general way to implement pixel shaders is GL_ARB_fragment_program, which
equals Shader Model 2.0 aka DirectX 9 shaders. This is not supported on your
card.
There is an option though via an ATI specific extension called
GL_ATI_fragment_shader. Unfortunately this would require a an additional
complete shader backend, which isn't only ATI specific, but also specific to
this very special type of cards. And since we don't even know if
ati_fragment_shader works on the dri driver nobody wrote one yet. Patches are
welcome ;-)

This bug does not occur on a GeForce 6200.
So I can roughly experimentally confirm that this issue is confined to old
nvidia cards only.
Thunderbird says anything pre GeForce 4 will suffer this problem: should this
additional info be added to the bug summary?

Not a fix, but a workaround: start halo with '-vidmode 1024,768,85' or similar

Enverex, can you retest with newer Wine? I think it's fixed by now.
(in order to get it to start, disable all sound systems in winecfg, eg ALSA,
OSS, etc.)

Without GLSL, the game seems to work fine now on 0.9.48 (graphically speaking).
Shadows can be enabled without problems.
The only remaining issue seems to be that the flashlight won't illuminate
textures it shines on.
In order to get it to start (to test this), you have to disable all sound
systems in winecfg (ALSA, OSS, etc.)

It appears that in the versions since 0933 (using 0948 currently) the control
issues still exist. Using 0942 and 0948 I haven't had any graphical issues, but
the "shooting " ability is lost after one shot. The program does not freeze, as
the shooter still rotates, and one can pause and unpause it, and even close the
program.

First of all I have no clue how to do that or what I have to do to identify
that. Sorry but I barely use wine and never got so much into it. It worked for
me or it didn't. WarCraft is mostly the only app I use with wine (barely
something else)

Well this occurs also when one tries to start an application in (not using
DISPLAY, just starting the app) X screen 1 when another one is already running
on X screen 0. Comes error.
Also I think this bug should get more priority as multimonitor setups are
becoming more and more common, thus are the separate X screen setups...

I believe that the one you sent is the U.K. version. Not the U.S. The UK version
will not work because the SlingBox hardware is for NTSC. Not PAL.

I've been trying to upgrade from 0.9.47 to 0.9.48 since yesterday. I followed
all the instructions at http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb but for the life
of me I don't understand why it remains on 0.9.48. I have already upgraded one
from 0.9.46 to 0.9.47. But I just don't know why I can't go up to .48.
Thanks for your attention.

I've upgraded to 0.9.48. Let me be specific: 16 out of 17 hunks of patch no. 04
fail. The compiled result (using gentoo's emerge) seems to work in that it
makes proper cursors, but a whole section of the patchset is now not included.
I don't know much about this, but patch no. 04 needs updating. Now that I've
seen a bit more I don't think that I know how to fix it, though. Sorry.

There is a patch for Shareaza that fixes this bug.
But in case it doesn't get committed or other programs have this same problem
I'll try to explain my understanding of the bug.
In some cases when Shareaza asks for the menu to be closed it uses PostMessage(
WM_CANCELMODE, 0, 0 ) and things work as they are supposed to. But in 3 places
Shareaza uses SendMessage( WM_CANCELMODE, 0, 0 ) instead to close the menu.
Windows has no trouble with this second method but wine does. I did some
debugging (but I'm pretty new to wine) and found that wine doesn't seem to be
"seeing" the WM_CANCELMODE message when SendMessage is used. wine's
implementation of EndMenu() uses PostMessage( WM_CANCELMODE, 0, 0 ) and
changing Shareaza to send that message, as the patch above does, fixes things
in wine.
Hope that helps.

Messages from winecfg
I'm using wine with a Ubuntu Gutsy amd64 system, where I compiled alsa from
source (-libs, -utils, -driver, -firmware and -oss). All works well, playback
and recording.
I made a new .wine folder (moving the old one to other place) and tried to
configure sound. In winecfg's Audio tab are listed only 2 devices under ALSA,
and none under OSS. I think this ocurred because after I compiled alsa-oss,
because I tested the configuration a little while before, and even the Test
Sound worked.
Now winecfg doesn't recognize any sound devices.
I tried running a game with the "Driver Emulation" checked, and the sound
played briefly, before crashing (STALKER, in a local installation).

And the audio test now stopped working.
I'm using Gutsy x86_64 with wine from the Winehq Ubuntu repository, and Alsa

alsa-oss). Sound recording won't work in my system with the official ubuntu

Using Wine 0.9.48, the installer installs WMP10 even in a fresh .wine, provided
the Windows version is set to XP. WMP10 runs but crashes after a short time.
I would be really surprised if the installer _really_ worked, though; ie. does
it install the files/keys necessary to play WMA/WMV files? WMP9 installer does
not do that.

OK, I think fixing this may be bit of the top for me at the moment. :) I'll
keep looking at it, but ASSIGNED status may not be appropriate.
Anyway the stub CryptCATAdminAddCatalog is definitely a problem, as WMP9 uses
this to install key files. I have a patch to copy the cat files, but that
won't do any good.

OK, so now I do actually have an idea as to why the installation is failing. :)
The installer calls mscat32.CryptCATAdminAddCatalog which forwards to the same
wintrust function, which is a stub. This function should copy the file to a
place in system32/CatRoot, but the stub does not do that of course.
Implementing a stub that merely copies the file should hopefully suffice for
us, so I'll get working on that.
Changing component to wine-misc since there is no wintrust/mscat32 component.
Assigning to me.

Just want to report that symptoms are still the same using the latest Wine
(0.9.47) and MapSource (6.13.4). I have an older GPS unit that uses a serial
interface rather than USB. I am able to download from the GPS, but not upload
to it. I've tried switching the Windows version in winecfg from Windows 2000 to
both Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, but the symptoms are identical. I made a
log as described above, but it's 75M uncompressed. I can trim out the
interesting bits if anyone would like to see it, but I'm not exactly sure how
many lines to leave before/after the first/last "trace:comm:io..." lines for
this to be useful to anyone.
Right now the main reason I have to keep Windows around is, of all things,
Garmin MapSource. There's just no reasonable open-source replacement, mostly
due to the street data itself being proprietary. I'd love for MapSource to work
correctly under Wine, and if there's anything I can do to help, please let me
know.

I don't get any such heap error with Wine 0.9.48. No native msxml seems to be
necessary. However, the installer tries to import mscat32.dll (cabinet
creation), and says the installation fails at the end. When that DLL is
present the installer produces more output, but it still says it fails at the
hend.

Hmmm, the test doesn't trigger the debugger? This is the point at which the
debugger starts and bypassing the CreateSurface call allows it to proceed.

The bug still occurs with wine 0.9.47 on Ubuntu Gutsy. The sound is played
quite well but when trying to manipulate parameters it becomes choppy.

Hackers can run the patcher by removing wine gecko temporarily, renaming or
removing the keys in HKCU/Software/Wine/MSHTML/.

The bug has mutated.
I've just tested with Wine 0.9.48, VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.2 build 2542, AviSynth
2.5.7 and VSFilter 2.37: there are still rendering issues but completely
different ones.
Now, each line stops being rendered as soon as there is a space character. I
only see the first "word" (it can be a single dash).
There is no other bug: All visible letters are placed correctly. The text is
centered as if all letters was going to be drawn.
I tried a workaround: replacing all space by nbsp (0xA0). I am surprised it
doesn't change anything.

Version: 0.9.47.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED

Log containing all wine messafes
Steam installs fine, the game also, but when I try to run it, in the moment
when the final program (I mean, not steam but hl.exe) should start I get "wine:
Unhandled page fault on write access to 0x67041984 at address 0x7ee39233
(thread 0039), starting debugger...".
I have no idea weather it's a dll problem or something else.
In attachment I put all messages from Wine

If I switch between ALSA and OSS it changes to:
fixme:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_ValidateDevice (0x16b730) : stub
So I'd say its sound related in my case...
