The subprocess module works just fine. Minimal test case: create a file test.py: import os print os.popen("echo test").read() and invoke python on it. Nothing happens, while it SHOULD output test on the screen. Loading native msvcrt did not fix this. Also the wcmd.exe is somehow messed up a bit. For reference I tested another target compressed with shrinker 3.4 which suffers from same problem: "Astrosoft Vision 4" (http://astrosoft.ch/vision.htm). Shrinker depends on specific API entry (opcode) layout of following functions: LdrAccessResource EXC_CallHandler/ExceptionHandler2 (windows) ExitProcess The patch mimics windows API entry opcodes for ExitProcess by using __asm__ wrapper to let shrinker successfully hook. The opcode sequences must be located between first 0x20 bytes of API entry. Shrinker usually overwrites push <imm32> (5 byte) instructions, large enough to fit jmp/call dword ptr opcode. If any 3rd party software hooks one of these entries on standard way (detour on first bytes), Shrinker will obviously fail. Same goes to wine +relay feature - do not use it while running shrinker protected programs. The patch was tested with Might & Magic 6 (with shrinked mss32.dll) under NT/2K/XP configurations. It successfully starts up, no more manual deshrinking needed. Should apply to all other Shrinker 3.x protected apps/games. The latest known Shrinker version is 3.4 - development probably abandoned some time ago. Additional notes for this game: 1.) You might run into "More diskspace needed" error when starting up the game. This is due to GetDiskFreeSpaceA/W() cluster overflow. Wine fixes overflow (cap 2 GB) only for Win9X/Me systems, which is IMHO wrong. This API is broken on all windows versions (should not make any difference - cap by default). You can fix this by removing GetVersion() check in "dlls/kernel32/volume.c:GetDiskFreeSpaceW()". The game will then successfully start on larger disk partitions. 2.) If it asks for "CD2", just make directory containing ANIMS/AUTORUN/AUTORUN.INF data and add directory to winecfg, setting type as CDROM. Regards PS: I hope the developers of Shrinker burn in hell for writing such intrusive code. That api entry trickery has no benefit at all but makes life of customers/users harder (hooking problems with other 3rd party software). Protection level? Zero. No error messages, no nothing... +++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #4825 +++ Unfortunatly there is little information on this issue as there is no error output from WINE at all. When running winamp full 5.x and trying to bring up the media library, either by hot key or by context menu, does nothing at all. Then I upgraded to 0.9.46 (Fedora 6 update) and started having the same problem described here. I traced the dinput and found that wine was using /dev/input/event3. I can't test that device with jstest but after reading the comments here I decided to delete all the `/dev/event' devices and see if wine would pick up on my js0 device. It did. In a new trace, I found that it even correctly read a throttle adjustment. However, it did not pass any of that on to the program. The buttons worked correctly but not the x, y, or Z movement. According to the client this is a complete version which could be reinstalled after changing machine or MS Windows version. But I am not sure myself because it's very hard to control anything with Microsoft. The client also had Office 97 which installed without problem under Wine and MS Works which I tried to use as a qualifying product without success for Office 2000. In the before the commit identified by Ben as being the first bad commit, this particular format was marked as "not supported". In all later versions of wine, this format is considered supported (albeit buggy, as evidenced by the results produced in GTA3). I have not yet identified what exactly is causing the problem, but reverting the format back to being unsupported will at least display the textures correctly. As wine-0.9.45 is the latest version that allows GTA3 to run on my box (I get some strange errors with version 0.9.46 and I already described what happened with when I use 0.9.47), I've put together the attached quick fix for this particular version. So now after doing `winetricks fakeie6 wsh56` on a clean wineprefix one hits the MSI and MSXML problems. The first problem is the uninitialized apartment and it's quite possibly that native MSI initializes it as there are some COM-like code in our MSI that might be a normal COM on Windows and may require initializing the apartment (we should check if it is a STA or MTA). Once I've tried to fix the creation of IXMLDOMDocument but there are some problems - our IXMLDOMDocument stores some information that should be shared between all the IXMLDOMDocuments for the same document. Also if we do a IXMLDOMDocument_Load we want the new content to show in all the document objects. I also have 3 monitors configured as 'separate X screens'. When I try to run say Steam in display 1 while uTorrent is tunning on Display 2, the Steam fails to run with error showing in console (attachment 1 - Error). Tried the Office install, uninstall Wine, install wine 0.9.37, start a Windows app (Notepad), also started WinWord.exe (got the "current user" error again), upgraded back to wine 0.9.46, problem persists. There is a delay of about 3 seconds after successfully starting the app before the "current user" error pops up. Also tried to "repair" the Office 2003 install, no effect. Tried to re-install, no effect. When running bash#>wine WINWORD.EXE from the command shell, these last lines: fixme:advapi:CheckTokenMembership ((nil) 0x18c178 0x34d9e8) stub! fixme:nls:GetUserGeoID 16 fixme:ntdll:RtlNtStatusToDosErrorNoTeb no mapping for 8000000a Appear to be the culprits. When you klick on ? -> Info in Spider (xp version), for example, the bitmap is not drawn first. When I triggered a refresh/redraw in older wine versions it was drawn correctly and stayed until I minimized and restored the window (its not drawn then, again). Since a patch for refreshing window contents lately, you have to move the window partly off screen for the bitmap to draw. The problem is solved for the first windows, but remains when opening a second one, causing the same crash. The first patch ( end of august ) didn't have this problem, allowing multiples windows to be opened, but the version in .9.47 does. There is also a problem with dynamic highlight of edges : when the option is checked, edges are redrawn shifted by approx. 50 pixels left. When switching down the option, everything is ok. Another point is that Solidworks is searching for the graphic card type for enabling some functions (realview, vertex shaders). with wine, solidworks is using the "windows software opengl", as it doesn't detect opengl hardware. If you need help with the 64-bit build, I am offering to help. Just please do not discount issues of build problems on 64-bit platforms. If it does not build, it is a software defect. Since there is no separate facility for reporting software defects, the bugzilla is the only tool we can use. I will gladly work on this issue and see if I can hack something together to build this on 64-bit. Incidentally, 0.9.44 builds fine on 64-bit. Upgraded to wine-0.9.47 via Debian-Etch Synaptic Package Manager. Elder Scrolls III - Morrowind no longer launches. The only substantial difference between tested wine versions is that GIT version hangs instead of falling out into desktop, and I've to switch to the console and kill it. There's something about CriticalSection in the end of output, so maybe in more recent code there's also synchronization deadlock caused by exception. From digging into the code, I have found out the following information, which will be useful in order to finally eliminate this bug. For a start, the test application is trying to use a rich edit control in 1.0 emulation mode. This is important, because the bug concerns the behavior of paragraph breaks when inserting non-standard sequences. To recap, the 1.0 emulation involves (but is not necessarily limited to) treating \r\n pairs as paragraph breaks, and returning, in turn, paragraph breaks as \r\n pairs. In contrast, 2.0 and higher treat \r, \n, and \r\n as valid indicators for paragraph breaks, but treat them all as a single character, and are all represented as \r. There are some places in builtin riched20 that make allowances for this, but due to the lack of richedit 1.0 tests, they are not currently exercised. When pressing the button labeled "Crash", the app code tries to insert the (non-standard) sequence \r\r\n . For riched20 in 2.0 and higher, this should insert a single space. For 1.0, this should insert the characters as they are, and advance the cursors by a delta of 3 (from the point of view of the app). The bug is that currently, builtin treats this sequence as *two* paragraph breaks (\r, then \r\n), and then the emulation code shows a cursor delta of 4 (twice the \r\n sequence). The app expected a delta of 3, so it panics and throws an exception. The sequence that leads to the exception goes somewhat like this: 1) Control starts with contents of "RichEdit1\r\n", which should mean, 9 printable characters, plus one paragraph break composed of two characters, for a total of 11 characters. EM_EXGETSEL agrees with this and returns a CHARRANGE of (11,11). 2) User presses "Crash" button. 3) A EM_REPLACESEL is sent to the control, with the sequence "\r\r\n" (3 bytes). 4) Current builtin takes this to mean "\r is one paragraph break, and \r\n is another, so two paragraph breaks should be inserted". 5) The Delphi app disagrees: "\r is a standalone character, but non-printable, and only \r\n counts as a paragraph break. Only one paragraph break is inserted, but all three characters should end up in the control". 6) App then sends a EM_EXGETSEL message to query the current selection. 7) Due to the reasoning at 4), builtin inserted two paragraph breaks. However, since the app requested a 1.0 control, builtin converts each paragraph break into \r\n pairs. For an initial selection at (11,11), builtin reports now (15,15). 8) Due to the reasoning at 5), the app expects to see (14,14). When builtin reports (15,15), the app screams and throws an exception. The attached patch is a proof of concept. It changes the behavior of text insertion, so that \r by itself won't create a new paragraph - only \r\n will. An unpaired \r will be inserted as a normal character. This patch is enough to prevent the app from throwing an exception. However, this patch makes one extra space (the solitary \r) appear as selectable. So this is not a proper solution. If this patch is taken as a basis for a complete solution, it will need modifications to the painting routines in order to refuse to select solitary trailing \r characters at the end of paragraphs.
