OK, marking invalid for now. After wine-1.0, we may want to
support updating from one release of wine to the next
more gracefully.

In reply to Vitaliy Margolen's comment. Just to clarify about the Guard. On the
main bug page that talks about not being able to properly use the guard,
someone has said that they have been doing extensive testing and have somewhat
figured out how to do this. This was posted within the last month and I believe
maybe in the next 2 months, that the Guard will probably work if what this guy
saying is true. :)
I'm not so sure about the Mozilla ActiveX though. And I thought that Mozilla
didn't even support ActiveX. Is that false?

It have to come with the program you are trying to install. If it doesn't you
have to request it from the makers of the said program to include it. This is
their responsibility to package all redistributables, required by their craft.

Assuming I don't have a licensed copy of windows lying around, where can I get

As this bug keeps turning up in the bugzilla mails, I could not help to notice.
rankincj(a)yahoo.com, this procedure of moving away the .wine directory and
creating a new one with only the application in question installed is a
debugging technique. It is not out goal to force users to recreate their .wine
directory on every update. However, to make debugging problems feasible, we ask
people to check with a fresh .wine directory.
As a developer, I frequently run tests on a freshly installed windows machine
so I can be certain I'm not seeing any artifacts created by installing other
things.
Your previous posts indicate that you are going to argue that you are a user,
not a developer. In this case, I can only say that this is the Wine equivalent
to the advice you hear from Windows-based tech support people over and over
again if you call in with problems. "Just get a clean .wine" is the same as
"Please reinstall Windows". In Windows, you will not be required to do it that
often anymore, but that is because Windows changes less frequently.
Now, as this is turning into some sort of a wine user experience discussion,
how about we take this to some other forum more suited for a discussion like
this?
That will allow developers who read the bugzilla mails to focus on development,
and not on people like me, who misuse the bug comments for non-bug-related
posts.

Eh? What is that you essentially think that I am doing??? All I have done at
the moment is upgrade binary Wine RPMs and report that Wine core-dumps! ("Core
dump BAD").
The only other registry tweaking that I have done was needed to persuade the
app to run with a clean wineprefix directory, at your behest.
> We know that the registry is a prone point of failure and that is why we ask you

Please remember to tell Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu and all the other distros. By
the sound of it, *none* of your users are doing this.
> If you want to figure out how to reinstall wine without going through all the

WoW is simply an example of a popular Windows application with an extremely
non-trivial installation procedure; something that no-one in their right mind
would want to repeat every time that a new version of Wine is released. I
actually reported this bug about a completely different application.

I have done some checking on the builds and they are fine. The problem should
be fixed by making a new .wine directory (backup current ~/.wine directory,
e.g. mv to ~/.wine-old and invoke wineprefixcreate or any other application
running wine).
I guess the bug can be closed as notabug.

Chris,
Have you ever taken a registry from another version of windows and glued it
into a different version? It won't work! That's essentially what you're doing!
Heck it's even worse on windows since the registry is tied to the hardware you
are using. At least wine has an ability to regenerate a registry on the fly
where windows really does not. We know that the registry is a prone point of
failure and that is why we ask you to do this.
If you want to figure out how to reinstall wine without going through all the
patches for WoW (which is entirely possible) then take this somewhere else.
This bug is FIXED.

Console log for wine 0.9.35
Further testing:
wine 0.9.34, clean install, seems to have the same problem as 0.9.46
wine 0.9.35 seems to crash at the same point as 0.9.46, for me, with slight
differences.
The graphical glitches on the campaign loading screen clearly show possible
attempts at multiple windows open, instead of just blackness. This might be be
bug 2398 but i don't know enough to say.
The console log reports (mis)handling the back buffering slightly differently.
wine 0.9.28 'worked' once of about 10 starts, crashing shortly into the turn
rather than immediately. However, 0.9.46 (seemingly) randomly worked for me a
few times too, too, and worked better.
Regardless, i can't regression test since i can't find a version with the
campaign working any better than 0.9.46. It may be the versions that used to
'work' did so with different nvidia drivers, and/or different X versions?

Thank you for doing the regression testing. It's really appreciated.
However this regression has nothing to do with the original problem. The new
bug for this regression is bug 9572.
Closing.

This bug is still in the latest version (0.9.46).
Currently, the only way to play CS:S is to downgrade to wine 0.9.43, the

For the record, it looks as Wine is crashing for me because someone defined
some new registry entries, and the code assumes that those entries are always
going to be there. Given time, I can probably find the exact new keys in
question. However, this now leaves me with a problem: how to update my registry
while keeping all my settings and game state, because updating Wine by using
"yum update" certainly doesn't touch the .reg files in the .wine directory. (It
looks as if the app installed an entry in system.reg that told it where the CD
was mounted, and then refused to run if this entry was not present. Adding this
entry to a "fresh" wineprefix avoided the crash.)
So when you say "The bug is fixed/closed", you *really* mean that it is closed
only for that small percentage of users who will install the app from scratch,
and that everyone else can go hang.

If you had the slightest iota of initiative you could enter my email address
into Google and find out my full name in mere seconds. (And then hopefully kick
yourself for not guessing it from my email address in the first place!) But
that would be "work", wouldn't it, and rudeness is *so* much easier...
> you forgot what I told you: use separate WINEPREFIX.
Oh, I remember all right. What you fail to appreciate is that it wouldn't help.
My original app is already installed in one WINEPREFIX that contains all my
game state and settings. To install the app into a second WINEPREFIX would
create me a brand new and up-to-date registry, but would lose me those settings
and game state. Hence installing into a new WINEPREFIX is not an option.
And in the meantime, there is *still* a code-path in Wine 0.9.46 that
dereferences a NULL pointer!

I'm sorry I have to say it, but by definition, you and rankincj(a)yahoo.com are
ignorant on this topic. This has been turned into an issue of upgrading
between releases, when the original request to remove the wineprefix had
nothing to do with differences between releases or problems handling such an
upgrade. The real issue is that there are finitely many variables that affect
a bug, and the more variables we can eliminate as a cause of the bug, the
easier it is to find the actual bug. 95% of the time, a bug has nothing to do
with having a dirty .wine, but there is that 5% where this is a problem, and we
ask users to remove their wineprefix to remove this variable so the debugging
process is easier. At this point in the development process, there are very
few changes to the code base that require a new wine prefix. After 1.0, there
should be next to none.

You're very ungrateful of all the time and energy we spend on managing our
bugzilla and fixing bugs. We do the best that we can with the manpower we
have. If you want professional support, buy a professional product.

Actually, you might not like his manner, but Vitaliy does a lot for the
project, and we'd be at a loss without him.
>It's time to look at _why_ it's
> taking you so long to get to 1.0.

It's taking so long because we don't have the manpower to work any faster.
We've gotten a tremendous amount accomplished with the few developers we do
have.
Whatever bug there is with TOPO might actually have positive attention paid to
it if the reporter actually did what the developers asked him/her to do instead
of complaining.

The point in getting to 1.0 is to put all the stuff that 1.0 needs to have in
place _before_ 1.0 is released. That includes:
(1) Having staff (even volunteers) trained to respect the users. Users who take
the time and effort to submit meaningful bug reports are among your best
assets. Those who have shown up prior to 1.0, if you can build a good
relationship with them, especially so.
(2) Having the mechanisms in place to allow smooth version upgrades. Taking the
stance that these will be the absolutely last thing added to move to 1.0
assures that they most likely will not be of release quality precisely when you
move to 1.0.
Maybe being in competition with Windows makes you feel you can skimp on user
relations and quality control, but exactly the opposite is true. An OS project
is exactly as valuable as the community it attracts. Trusting someone like V.
to be gatekeeper here is costing you dearly. It's time to look at _why_ it's
taking you so long to get to 1.0.

Have you told all the distros this? Seriously! Because expecting everyone to
continually reinstall all their Windows apps doesn't fit any definition of
"reasonable" that *I'm* familiar with! Have you ever *tried* installing World
of Warcraft, with its expansion packs and endless stream of patches? Here's
what the "WoW Wiki" has to say on the subject:

Yeah, because after v1.0 is precisely the right time to implement new must-have
features that might affect how you implement minor things such as "the
registry"...

I think, until 1.0, it's reasonable to require
users to start with a fresh .wine directory
when installing new versions of Wine. That's
life in beta software land. As I said earlier,
if you don't want to put up with stuff like
this, you should only use released software, not betas.
After 1.0, we'll have to handle upgrades much
more gracefully.

By the by.. if anyone figures this out, it will open the floodgates for many
people to switch to Linux! Pressure in Wine has been a major issue that needs
to be resolved! Thanks to those figuring it out.
Maybe talk to the people at Ambient Design, makers of ArtRage 2.5?
The windows version installs perfectly with wine, and works with pressure in
Ubuntu!
Perhaps they use a different implementation of wintab??

Amen to that! I got so put off by being berated by Vitaliy, that I gave up
on this whole show for the most part. I would post information that I thought
might be helpful in the sense of resolving a bug and get chastened for not
using the bug system in the fashion he felt was best. So don't feel like
the only one who is frustrated with the attitude of the wine developers.
This whole party line of "wine is alpha software, so you have to put up with
whatever shabby nonsense comes your way" is a monumental cop-out. How many
years has wine been "mainstream" ? My last round with this particular bug was
that there was a patch available that fixed it and I wanted to see it make its
way into the main distribution, but all I heard about was that my bug was a
duplicate of some other bug (maybe this one). If that is the case then merge
the two bugs and focus on fixing the problem.
No, I'm not bitter, but I did find my energies better spent by writing "gtopo"
which is a non-wine/windows application that replaces TOPO! than trying to get
wine bugs fixed.

No, you're both missing the bigger picture: you are implicitly saying that
upgrading Wine requires all installed applications to be reinstalled
afterwards, because that is the only approach that you are willing to test. And
unfortunately for you, *no-one* uses that approach. Consider what happens when
you upgrade binary Wine RPMs via yum, for example. In short, practically *every
single one* of your users is slowly trashing his/her existing wineprefix
directories whenever s/he upgrades his/her Wine packages, and so by your own
argument, *no-one at all* should be using Wine until v1.0 is released. In my
case, that trashing can be assumed to have reached the point where Wine just
crashes now. And crashing always indicates a bug, even in beta software.
Actually, to be fair, I don't see how Wine v1.0 would solve my problem either,
unless you are undertaking to have solved everyone's "updating wineprefix
directories" problem by then. However, that would first involve admitting that
there *is* a problem...

Log generated by the terminal running IE6.
I recently used a shell script (ies4linux) to install IE6 under Wine. I then
installed Microsoft Agent under wine as well.
I attempted to view http://www.foxee.net in IE6 for the purpose of using the
Foxee agent. The agent itself loaded, but I was presented with an error box
saying "Your current security settings prohibit ActiveX controls on this page.
As a result, the page may not display correctly."
Whenever the agent 'speaks', the text in the tooltip is nothing but random,
garbled symbols, and there is no audio whatsoever, with the exception being
what I assume is a pre-recorded sound file (a barking noise) that plays when
Foxee 'introduces herself'.
Attached is a log of the terminal output from IE6. I opened the site containing
the agent around the time that long string of
fixme:hook:IsWinEventHookInstalled's
started. The block of them, anyway, followed by the long string of tooltip
errs.

Vitaliy may not have the best bedside manner, but he's
right. If you can't do the simple
mv .wine .wine.old
reinstall and test game
test, then you shouldn't run Wine until 1.0 is released.
Until then, you can purchase a copy of Crossover or Cedega,
and use their paid support services.
Cheerio!

Vitaliy, you are the wrong person to be handling bug reports because you would
rather insult people than do your job. I suggest finding another line of work,
because you are wasting everyone's time here.

*Sigh*, there's none so deaf as those who will not hear. Instead, you would
rather scream at users to go away rather than acknowledge that there might be a
problem.
Here's a clue: dereferencing a NULL pointer is *always* a bug! Period!

I've ALREADY posted a WINDEBUG trace that shows Wine 0.9.46 crashing when it
dereferences a NULL pointer. And a simple comparison with the traces that I
previously posted against earlier versions of Wine should be enough to convince
anyone *willing to look* that this is the same bug.
If that's not proof enough for you then I am obviously wasting my time talking
to *you*.

Summary: Medieval 2 Total War: campaign crashes after loading.

Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal

Console log
In the game Medieval 2 Total War, the campaign usually crashes after the
loading bars have finished, before entering the campaign map.
The bug may be related to display issues, as the last fixmes are d3d.
On the other hand, the game's own error log lists not finding data.
The game gives an error of "Medieval 2: Total War encountered an unspecified
error and will now exit"
Sometimes, rarely, it seems not to crash at this point, but only perhaps 1% of
the time. Many hours fiddling settings and reinstalling clean versions and such
could not duplicate the rare success.
Some people on appdb have suggested earlier version of wine didn't have this
problem (though they crash for other reasons)
the 2007.10.7 git wine has the same problem.
versions 1.0 and 1.3 of M2TW have the same problem.
the problem occurs full screen and in emulated desktops.
it's unfortunately not testable with the free demo of m2tw, because the demo
doesn't have the campaign.
I'm happy to give more information if it may be useful, please ask.

(In reply to comment #39)
> What missing registry entries? Are you copying over the app installation from
> a Windows install?
No, this box is Windows-free! The point is that installing applications
sometimes adds important keys into the .reg files, and some games refuse to run
unless these keys are present.
> What mandatory registry entries are you talking about? Registry entries are
> created *only* when you run wineprefixcreate, so you have to remove the old
> .wine and generate a new .wine.
No, applications install their own registry entries too... (Obviously). And
that's "mandatory" as in "Wine blithely assumes that these registry keys exist,
and will core-dump if they do not.".
> This also gets rid of any cruft from
> installing other apps that may interfere with the bug
One man's "cruft" is another man's "crucial installation entry"...
> (installation and uninstallation in Wine is not complete and that's another
> reason why this is the policy).
As I suspected, you are completely neglecting what happens when people upgrade
Wine. And *everyone* upgrades Wine, and *no-one* reinstalls all their
applications each time either.
> $ mv .wine .wine-save
> $ wineprefixcreate
> $ test app
> $ mv .wine-save .wine
>
> voila! Your old apps are back...
Yes, but along with the *old* .reg files, which presumably don't contain the
latest "mandatory / Wine-will-crash-unless-they-are-present" keys. So how is
that helpful? And trying to test my app doing what you've described above
doesn't work *precisely* because all the "cruft" is missing from the
newly-created .wine directory, and so the game flat refuses to run.
So, please tell me: How are all we millions of Wine users supposed to update
the .reg files in our .wine directories with the latest "must-have" keys,
whenever we upgrade to the latest version of Wine?

Hmm, it doesn't quite seem to work (my test case didn't originally consider
doing anything other than playing a level for a few minutes then quitting). The
patch results in a "normal" speed game when starting a new campaign from the
main menu, but not when loading a game. In addition, any menu navigation (e.g.
saving the game) causes the game to slow right down again.

Stefan/Paul's patch updated to apply cleanly to 0.9.46
I had a go at updating this patch for a git branch downloaded shortly after the
0.9.46 release (i.e. I expect this to apply cleanly to the 0.9.46 branch). It
speeds up RedAlert 2 significantly (at least in my test run, which is the first
half minute of the tutorial) on my computer. I had hoped that this would also
fix bug 9910, but that seems to be a different breed of problem...
I had to #include "ddraw.h", in surface_gdi.c, because make complained about
DDLOCK_WAIT (and one other similar define) not being known. I guess this may
mean that there are things in the patch that are not -- or no longer -- meant
to go into that source file....

Robert Reif, when Alexandre said the functionality should be added or moved to

This one hit me personally twice in a row with different
apps, so it might be common. Let's see if we can fix it for 1.0.

Skype's pretty popular, and the Linux client is said to lag

Hi, this should be fixed in current git (see more info at

Try either current git or next wine-release 0.9.47, and reopen if you still run

I had this problem as well. I initially installed DirectX 9 from the GTASA
installer after having the game running without it, once this was done it
crashed after the NVIDIA logo. I did not track it back to that .dll, but after
getting rid of DirectX 9 the game ran fine.

Well, in fact I had the mentioned error, when I tried to run that app from the
"zip version" while, installing it with the setup.exe, the app installed, then
I need to extract libnspr
(ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/nspr/releases/v4.6.4/msvc6.0/WINNT5.0…)
to its directory... After that the software started, but then it freezes while
loading plugins, but maybe I should open another bug for it also if a porting
for linux is planned...

What mandatory registry entries are you talking about? Registry entries are
created *only* when you run wineprefixcreate, so you have to remove the old
.wine and generate a new .wine. This also gets rid of any cruft from
installing other apps that may interfere with the bug (installation and
uninstallation in Wine is not complete and that's another reason why this is
the policy).

Do you read what I say?
$ mv .wine .wine-save
$ wineprefixcreate
$ test app
$ mv .wine-save .wine
voila! Your old apps are back...

Of course not; the missing registry entries were presumably installed by either
the application itself or its installation process. (It's Windows - Windows
applications do that sort of thing!)
And yes, this is a regression of sorts in that I installed the application with
Wine 0.9.3x and it broke when I upgraded to Wine 0.9.35. The fix posted in bug
#8033 kept me running until 0.9.42 was released and then bug #9147 broke it
again.
> Keeping a wineprefix between version is extremely common, but you miss the

No, I get that it's not guaranteed to work. It's the "(lack of) what happens
next" that I am having trouble with. In particular, your "sanitized" wineprefix
approach that just looks like a back-handed way of telling your users to go
away and reinstall all their applications.
If you're going to create mandatory registry entries in Wine that will make
Wine crash/explode if they're not present then you need to find a way to update
the .reg files in users' .wine/ directories too. Or put all these critical
entries into an unmodifiable wine.reg file that every wine installation loads
at start up. Or SOMETHING. Because no-one who installs Wine as binary packages
is *ever* going to be interested in recreating his/her .wine directory each
time they update. E.g. do you have any idea how much work is involved to
install World of Warcraft, with all of its patches and expansion packs?

Sorry for the delay -- already one of the previous wine versions released after
your last comment did work, so I suppose this bug can be closed. There are some
new problems apparently related to drawing of the window frame with 0.9.46

You don't understand the idea of a wineprefix, and that's making this
conversation difficult. You can have several wineprefixes along with several
different versions of Wine installed. Honestly that's besides the point
though. If you upgrade Wine and an app breaks, then that is a regression and
we would ask you to run a regression test to see which commit broke the app.
Keeping a wineprefix between version is extremely common, but you miss the
point that it's not guaranteed to work.

Attitude? It's Wine policy. It sounds like you're adding registry entries
from Windows to make the app work in the first place. Is that the case? If
so, this bug is definitely invalid. To file a bug report, you have to be able
to provide step-by-step instructions to reproduce the bug. That starts with a
clean wineprefix:
$ mv .wine .wine-save
$ wineprefixcreate
$ wine setup.exe
$ cd [dir containing exe]
$ wine app.exe
[crashes, bad behavior, etc]

I'm a *user* of Wine (via Fedora 7), not one of its developers. Wine is
included in many Linux distributions as RPM files, and these RPM files are
occasionally updated. From the sound of it, someone needs to have a nice
(polite) chat with the Fedora packagers (and probably the others too) because
you seem to be saying that the RPM update process is likely to be slowly
*trashing* everyone's Wine installations. Sweet.
> Wine is alpha and the developers make no guarantee of stability.
I'm not expecting stability. However, I do expect considerably more interest in
bug reports. All of the reported crashes have happened with clean package
installations and so qualify as bona-fide bugs.
Basically: Wine now has USERS - get used to it.
> All you have to do to get them back is
>
> $ mv .wine-save .wine
Then what's the point of wineprefix? I need to be able to update my *existing*
.wine installation, or the Wine developers must make it plain that anyone who
wants to update his/her Wine packages is expected to uninstall all their
Windows programs beforehand and then reinstall them afterwards. (And then see
how many people are left using Wine...)
> To sum it up, if you can't reproduce this bug with a clean .wine, then this
> bug will be closed as invalid.
That is a very sad attitude - the bug exists and I have posted the traces to
prove it. This particular game doesn't even *start* with a "clean" .wine,
presumably because important registry keys are missing, so there's a nice
little "catch-22" for you! And if you're saying that Wine crashes simply
because it can't find a registry key then that sounds like very sloppy coding
to me.

I don't think you understand how the development process works. Wine is alpha
and the developers make no guarantee of stability. A part of helping with the
development process is running apps in a clean .wine environment so that no
external factors affect the bug. Of course your gecko and configuration
settings didn't show up when you moved away .wine and called wineprefixcreate.
All you have to do to get them back is
$ mv .wine-save .wine
It sounds like you need to read the Wine User Guide to get a better
understanding of how Wine works, especially regarding wine prefixes.
http://winehq.org/site/docs/wineusr-guide/index
To sum it up, if you can't reproduce this bug with a clean .wine, then this bug
will be closed as invalid.

OK, thanks. I'll try that. But seriously: alpha software or no, it is
completely impractical to delete your private registry files.

In fact, I've just tried it and it's completely blasted away my gecko

If memory serves, #9147 and #8033 were different crashes both due to
dereferencing a NULL pointer in the printer code: #9147 appeared while I was
waiting for someone to apply the fix posted in #8033 to the git tree (which
still hasn't been done, BTW). So I suspect that these really *are* different

Wine is alpha software, so this should be expected. Besides that, all you have
to do is
$ mv .wine .wine-save
$ wineprefixcreate

It's an installation from binary packages, so I rather think it *is* correct.
Are you confusing me with someone else?

Vitaliy, it's ok, we can remove it from 1.0 later if
it doesn't measure up. I'm going with the "affects five or

For now we just need plausible candidates.

This is with 0.9.46. 0.9.44 didn't work either and Fedora has never released
0.9.45 but I suspect that one broke too.
The patch mentioned in this bug report still isn't in the sources, although I
think it's crashing elsewhere now anyway.

#3) by creating directories IN THE BACKUP DIR: "mkdir -p c:/"program files",
note caps just as per walker. Then I linked "$HOME/.wine/Program Files/Steam"
to "c:/program files/steam" and the install would launch Steam as it should.
(You can also apparently just run "wine Steam.exe -install
'c:/whatever/path/to/backup/dir'" but I'm not sure where you make your c:/...
in that case. I put it where I did after trial and error.)
The result, in my case, is that the restore works, but then Steam hangs at the
end. A kill -9 is required to terminate it. When restarted the games are
installed, and they update (but not a full download. at least half-life 2
worked properly for certain.) Originally the icon worked ("env
WINEPREFIX="/home/user/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" ) but
lately I also have to start Steam from the steam directory with "wine
Steam.exe" - nothing else seems to work. Also, Steam seems to be hanging often,
and now it's even refusing to connect though my connection is up. I wouldn't
mention these problems except that they did not seem to appear (especially the
connection problem) until after I started restoring backups.
Given that there seem to be multiple problems with restoring Steam backups,
should this really a "probably won't fix" kind of bug? Seems to be like it's
not just one problem (but what do I know.)
