What version Clinton? Are you using wine notepad or windows? I'm not getting
any errors in wine 0.9.45 using the file from bug 8156. If you're still getting
this in 0.9.45, can you give directions to reproduce?

I've narrowed this problem to one commit:

commit c8901d6f6253f6c97610eb1068ac4ff89758ed0a
Author: Stefan DĂśsinger <stefandoesinger(a)gmx.at>
Date: Fri Jun 9 19:36:12 2006 +0200
ddraw: Rewrite most of ddraw using WineD3D.
Unfortunately this diff has 1.5MB and is really old (it's between wine 0.9.15
and 0.9.16.)
After applying this commit:
- loading screen is no longer shown at all, with 0.9.15 it nicely fades in/out,
- game is really slow, mouse pointer becomes useless (and it's only way to play
this game.)
Hope this helps.

Currently it is impossible as the nProtect driver uses mscvrt.dll which cant be
loaded for a strange reason. I have no idea when this will be fixed, but I am
adding the API that gameguard requires. Gameguard is not impossible to run, you
will run just give it some time while wine is growing up.

It seems that apart from having the same problem of prematurely ending the
conversation like Photoshop CS2 it expect that there are at least 4 keys in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components . If
not it crashed with a division by zero exception. If these two problems are
solved or worked-around the program starts fine. I will try to learn if adding
such keys to wine.inf would have some side-effects.

Please, test it with wine 0.9.44 or 0.9.45, it works fine for me.

WINEDEBUG=+loaddll,+msi,+msidb,+seh,+tid wine Setup.exe
Hello,
following are some information collected so far that might be of interest to
get rid of native stuff and resolve some adobe installer issues ...
Not complete yet.
============ JScript / scripting host ============
Not much to say.
Native is currently needed until wine implements this.
============ shell ui interfaces (process dialog box - browseui) ============
The explorer style progress dialog box object which the setup uses is
implemented and exposed in BrowseUI.dll (windows shell interfaces ui).
CLSID_ProgressDialog -> {F8383852-FCD3-11D1-A6B9-006097DF5BD4}
IProgressDialog -> {EBBC7C04-315E-11d2-B62F-006097DF5BD4}
(defined in Platform SDK "ShlGuid.h")
The embedded typelib doesn't contain the CLSID - so self-register dll wont help
here.
The registry entries are created by windows installation.
You have to create the CLSID entry manually as pointed out by comment #1
The interface is well documented in MSDN and the implementation should be
straight forward.
============ msxml ============
I dual debugged this on windows and wine (with builtin first) to get some more
info.
The first thing i noticed is that wine's msi product installation was missing a
command line parameter:

The FIXME should be the culprit.
Due to missing implementation bits the xml file can't be properly constructed.
Later the missing file leads to empty PROPERTY_FILE parameter which finally
leads to the custom action error code 1603 (after lots of msi processing ->
missing properties).
After switching to native msxml3 (winetricks), the xml file is constructed.
It matches the one from windows. Good.
The custom action dll then tries to load it.
There is an interesting jscript snippet in several *.msi databases (not visible
with ORCA, use hex editor) that shows how this stuff might be loaded from
within custom action dlls.
Basically it instanciates MSXML document object and reads the xml file back
into a property map.

..
--- snip wine trace (condensed) ---
"err:ole:CoCreateInstance apartment not initialised" ->
"ole32.CoCreateInstance() retval=800401f0" is is the culprit.
It fails here because the msi custom action thread does not provide an ole
apartment by default.
Much later the custom action returns with 1603 - after processing database with
the properties from xml file missing.
To fix this, call CoInitialize() on entry and CoUninitialize() on exit. e.g.
something like this (quick shot):
--- snip dlls/msi/custom.c ---
static DWORD WINAPI DllThread( LPVOID arg )
{
LPGUID guid = arg;
DWORD rc = 0;
TRACE("custom action (%x) started\n", GetCurrentThreadId() );
CoInitialize(NULL);
rc = ACTION_CallDllFunction( guid );
TRACE("custom action (%x) returned %i\n", GetCurrentThreadId(), rc );
CoUninitialize();
MsiCloseAllHandles();
return rc;
}
--- snip dlls/msi/custom.c ---
I suspect this default ole apartment issue affects other adobe installers too.
I'm not aware of a mechanism like shlwapi's SHCreateThread() with CTF_COINIT
flags to control default/implicit ole apartment creation.
So i would stick to default apartment creation for custom action threads until
proven otherwise.
It now gets further - only to barf at:
--- snip ---
wine: Call from 0x7b840aa0 to unimplemented function
msi.dll.MsiSourceListSetInfoW, aborting
--- snip ---
"MsiSourceListSetInfoW" is implemented but the msi.spec lists it as stub.
Changing to "268 stdcall MsiSourceListSetInfoW(wstr wstr long long wstr wstr)"
works around this.
Now it goes further, spawning installer instance with additional parameters
that later dies due to non obvious errors.
Exact cause unknown yet (Adobe Setup Exit code: 4).
Could be either msi or scripting engine or msxml3 related.

This is the game trying to start in wine-0.9.45.
It never actually crashes any more, it just attempts to play some sound (you
hear less than a second of sound) then just stops there without crashing or
continuing.

Does this still require a native crypt32? The digital signature stuff should
be working as of wine 0.9.45, as that's what iTunes depended on.
Please retry without native crypt32. If it still fails, please post a +crypt
log and I'll have a look.

Any updates on this? It is working fine for me in 0.9.45, but then I never
experienced this regression anyway.

Water seems to render perfectly when using FBOs for offscreen rendering. I'll

For comparison, when using 'Cool Edit 96', sampling using OSS driver suffers
the same digital distortions as the Vaz Modular 'live input' module , and
sampling using ALSA driver works perfectly.

Ok, i got it running:http://appdb.winehq.org/appimage.php?iId=13474
Indeed the stubbed EnumServicesStatusExA was the problem, as Anastasius pointed
out. Simply returning TRUE instead of FALSE got past the crash.
After that a blank window showed, so unfortunately i had to use ies4linux again
to get past that screen and start the game. Apart from a missing cursor, it
seems to run quite fine.
Anyway, looks like the copyprotection is not the problem, wine works quite
nicely around it.

Hello,
sorry if I need to reiterate here: as long as no working
EnumServicesStatusExA() stub is provided there is no need to confirm for every
wine version.
With "working" I mean a stub which doesn't only return FALSE and GetLastError(
ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED).
The program expects the API to work, that's why it tries to
EnumServicesStatusExA() a second time with NULL lpServices.
The crash is due to crappy^H^H^H^H^H^Hminimalistic error handling.

Reconfirmed with wine 0.9.45 and Notes client 7.0.2.
It seems Notes is using some sort of overstrike rendering. Because if you print
the affected pages, you can actually see the bold text but only very very
slightly, like it is being rendered twice in normal font but not proper bold.

The hang is because Framemaker tries to stop the service but in the current
implementation only the service procedure stops but the service process doesn't
terminate, the pipe is still open and CallNamedPipe hangs. With the patch from
comment #3 from bug #7882 makes the process terminate and with it Framemaker
doesn't hang but terminate after restarting the service. This time the
conversation is shorter than the first time what could mean that safecast puts
a flag somewhere that this system is bad.

Created an attachment (id=8125)

stub for ConvertSecurityDescriptorToStringSecurityDescriptorW
I've sent a clean version of the QueryServiceObjectSecurity patch to
wine-patches. The attached patch adds a stub for
ConvertSecurityDescriptorToStringSecurityDescriptorW (it returns the string
from a Windows installation of Photoshop CS2). With this Framemaker creates the
service configuration and starts the service when run the first time. There is
a conversation between the service and Framemaker similar to the conversation
between the service and Adobe Photoshop CS2 and then Framemaker failed to
start.
When run for the next time it hangs - I will have to check why.

Wine does not accept hacks, which is what an incorrect patch is. If the app
now works because of a hack, then there's no incentive to correctly fix the
bug, regardless of the FIXME.

I have the same problem when trying to run Command & Conquer: The First Decade.
It runs full screen in 640x480, but both the gnome menus stay on top of the
game. I am running kernel 2.6.22-11-generic in Gutsy Gibbon and wine 0.9.45.

I have the same issue on my AMD X2 3800. Running 32 bit wine on 64 bit ubuntu
and generals hangs on splash screen (wine 0.9.43 - 0.9.44). I'm not so good at
traces, but ntdll seems to be reading lots of files and performing string
operations. My disk isn't thrashing while this takes place (at least according
to gnome system monitor). It might eventually finish as it doesn't seem stuck
on any particular file, but I haven't had the patience to wait more than 15
minutes. On wine 0.9.45 it takes 1-2 minutes to crash with an error (likely a
different bug).

It might be not correct, but if you leave the FIXME-message in it, i don't see
why
it couldn't be included. Currently the game is unplayable because of missing
keyboard output, with the path it works, and the FIXME would remind people,
that the "implementation" is not 100% correct, and needs to be worked on. So
maybe you could send it in anyway? Any comments?

The patch got applied and wil be available in Wine starting from Wine 0.9.46.
It should work after reinstalling Photoshop in a clean wineprefix (maybe it's
enough to remove some files/registry keys but I haven't found which). If even
after reinstalling in a clean wineprefix you have a problem feel free to reopen
the bug

The patch got accepted into Wine Git. Could you check if it works and this bug
can be closed? For my with this patch the dialogs did appear but blinked for
only a short while. But maybe there is something wrong with my configuration

We don't support Unicode functions used by e.g. Photoshop CS2 and other newer
software (but I hope now I will have the patches correctly) and some devices
are incorrectly detected as tablets e.g. laptop touchpads.
For this to work the tablet must be properly configured (a simple test is if it
is seen by Gimp as an extended device and if it works as a regiular mouse) but
this is done automatically on new distributions (e.g. Ubuntu 7.04 and up)

I find you can get around this naturally by setting the mouse sensativity
extremely high ingame. The hack only worked for UT2004 for me. Swat 4 locks the
mouse to the center of the window at all times. UT2004 plays great now though.

Updated ReplaceFileA/ReplaceFileW patch
Sorry this has taken so long, I have some obligations that have been keeping me
a lot busier than I expected. The attached patch should apply against the
latest GIT appropriately and handle the replace functionality. This patch also
addresses a concern in the last patch that was expressed by Dan Kegel on
wine-devel, though it does not change the functionality to using a series of
renames. This functionality was not changed since the first patch I issued used
a series of renames and the approach was deemed inappropriate.

r_dynamic 1 gives me a flashlight that is very similar to the one used in Half

9 or whatever I set with mit_dxlevel <number>, but the way it actually renders
anything does not change at all.

The fading away is intended in dxlevel 60. It happens in dxlevel 70 too, but at
a much larger distance.
The broken flashlight is a known hl2 bug on windows too, in dxlevel 60.
r_dynamic 1 fixes some of it.
The overbright objects are a GL limitation, and we need the
GL_NV_register_combiners extension to overcome it, or GL_ARB_fragment_program.
Does your card support any of them?
Regarding the two hl2 bugs, the question is why the game doesn't start in
dxlevel 70 instead of 60.

Same problem for me, using a GF 4 Ti4200 card. ...using Wine 0.9.44 and
1.0.9639 nvidia driver
Objects are always bright, until you break them; flashlight does not work on
statics, won't work on props either, but will make them even brighter instead.
Changing dxlevel and other configuration options does not have any effect
whatsoever.
Also there seems to be a problem with props in general; the game does not
render them, but will fade them in when getting closer. Looks like an
intentional invisibility effect for slow computers; but the game runs fine in
Windows at even higher resolutions (tried 800x600 in Wine, 1024x768 in
Windows).

Thanks for the great work, man! It improves the mouse movement issue, but it

No. dcom98 was needed to get the installer to work, but I've tried running
Money itself both with and without dcom98 and get the same error. I've also
got winetricks fakeie6 set to get around it compaining about IE5 not being
installed.
The only warning I get from the wine log is this one...
fixme:heap:RtlCompactHeap (0x110000, 0x0) stub
The error about Money not being installed comes from Money itself in a windows
error box, and it doesn't crash money... If you click ok on the error it then
asks you if you want to create a new file or open an existing one. Creating a
new file is fine and you can get into the program and use it as normal, but
asking it to open a new file goes back to the error about Money not being
installed and the loop continues... You can do this as many times as you like,
the only way out is to ask it to create a new file, which it seems happy with.
Is there any more verbose logging I could turn on that might help work out
what's going on?

Log of Failed Yahoo! Messenger
Yahoo! Messenger ran under Wine 0.9.45, but failed to connect. It brought up a
window that said that I was probably not connected to the internet, and asked
me if I needed to fill in proxy information.
My log is attached, but the gist of it is that it looks like Yahoo needs RAS
support from Wine.

Install of Yahoo! Messenger v8.1 completed for me under Wine 0.9.45 -- not to
say that Yahoo! Messenger actually works... but it /did/ install.
I chose a custom install, and unchecked all boxes.
It still complains about "IE being bad."

With 0.9.45 I see this message too, but in Spanish, and it is not the demo
version, is the complete game, without any add-on. With the original copy (CD
format) I see the splash image, it disapears a few seconds and then the
message is shown. With a no-cd crack version, the only difference is that the
splash image do not appear, but the error message is the same.

Hello,
well i looked into their svn repository using viewcvs:
http://anonsvn.mono-project.com/viewcvs/tags/mono-1-2-5/mono/mono/utils/mon…
File: [mono] / tags / mono-1-2-5 / mono / mono / utils / mono-dl.c (download)
Revision: 84900, Mon Aug 27 17:56:04 2007 UTC (2 weeks, 5 days ago) by wade

static char*
w32_dlerror (void)
{
char* ret = NULL;
wchar_t* buf = NULL;
DWORD code = GetLastError ();
if (FormatMessage (FORMAT_MESSAGE_FROM_SYSTEM |

{
ret = g_utf16_to_utf8 (buf, wcslen(buf), NULL, NULL, NULL);
LocalFree (buf);
}
return ret;
}
--- snip ---
The patch was applied against trunk:
http://anonsvn.mono-project.com/viewcvs/trunk/mono/mono/utils/mono-dl.c?rev…
(notice the older revision than 1.2.5 tag)
I actually have no clue how the manage their repository e.g. merge patches.
Anyway, wine trace log (+resource) and using debugging/disassembler on native
windows mono 1.2.5 show there is clearly NULL ptr as buf parameter passed.

Hello again,
well actually there are more bugs in mono and wine regarding the assembly
loading mechanism. Start your engines ...
used: mono 1.2.5 win32
wine-0.9.44-379-g82ef8d7
After using the AOT cache and msvcrt._wspawnvp() workaround i stumbled over
.NET gui app (windows forms) which uses pinvoke() calls to user32.dll.
The loader tries to locate the user32.dll and crashes.

--- snip ---
Notice the message "DllImport loading location: 'user32.dll.dll'."
Further search in mono source reveals this comes from
mono/mono/metadata/loader.c:mono_lookup_pinvoke_call() which tries to load the
module using a variety of names.
This function calls mono/mono/utils/mono-dl.c:mono_dl_build_path() to return
possible file names of the library.
Well mono_dl_build_path() assumes the library parameter is the "base name of a
library". Which is of course not the case: full name supplied instead. ".dll"
is mistakenly appended for all assemblies.
Next the module should be loaded:
mono_lookup_pinvoke_call() -> cached_module_load() -> mono_dl_open()
It fails loading dll (LL_SO_OPEN -> w32_load_module -> LoadLibrary()).
Of course: user32.dll.dll wont work.
It tries then again with ".la" suffix appended and fails again.
Now the interesting part, the error handling.
When an error is encountered, LL_SO_ERROR() is called which should return a
formatted (system) error message (pointer to buffer).
LL_SO_ERROR maps to "w32_dlerror" which is this code:
--- snip mono-1-2-5/mono/mono/utils/mono-dl.c ---
static char* w32_dlerror (void)
{
char* ret = NULL;
wchar_t* buf = NULL;
DWORD code = GetLastError ();
if (FormatMessage (FORMAT_MESSAGE_FROM_SYSTEM |
FORMAT_MESSAGE_ALLOCATE_BUFFER, NULL,
code, MAKELANGID(LANG_NEUTRAL, SUBLANG_DEFAULT), buf, 0, NULL))
{
ret = g_utf16_to_utf8 (buf, wcslen(buf), NULL, NULL, NULL);
LocalFree (buf);
}
return ret;
}
--- snip mono-1-2-5/mono/mono/utils/mono-dl.c ---
Can you spot the bug?
Hint: FORMAT_MESSAGE_ALLOCATE_BUFFER tells the callee to allocate memory.
Well, try to store the returned buffer pointer in nirvana and fail miserably
;-)
So actually it's both: a mono and a wine bug.
Mono should actually do FormatMessage( ...., &buf, ...) and Wine should
actually watch for supplied NULL ptrs in FormatMessageA/W() before trying to
access them (copy).
Now you might think "ok, that's it". No it isnt over yet ;-)
After i quick-fixed wine's FormatMessageA/W to handle buf == NULL case
(returning 0 length) mono crashed again.
Well mono assumes if any error occurs a system generated error message must be
returned.
The logging mechanism depends on that. If it fails somehow, like the bug in
mono code itself, which prevents FormatMessageA/W() from returning valid error
msg buffer it crashes by deref null pointer.
--- snip pseudo code ---
ret = call_some_native_func( ... &error_msg)
if( !ret)
{
mono_trace( "... %s", error_msg);
g_free (error_msg);
}
--- snip pseudo code ---
So there is currently no way to get around these issues without fixing mono
source itself.
Wine should fix the FormatMessageA/W() and msvcrt._wspawnvp() issues.
FOR THE RECORD: the code flow and issues are essentially the same on native
windows platform (except for the FormatMessage bug).
Start console (cmd.exe) there. Enable logging (set MONO_LOG_MASK=debug). Start
mono.exe with some .net app (i used simple 2.0 .net app generated by VC2005/C#)
and see it die.
For more fun, enable AOT cache (set MONO_AOT_CACHE=1). Die.

I can play with sound but without the car's engine sound, by deleting or
removing SOUND/ENGINE directory. Anyway, when the car jumps in slow motion
(also with sound) the game crashes too, even deleting the entire SOUND
directory.
With engine's sound, some cars can "stay" without crashing the game if you do
not accelerate. With the Porsche 911 Turbo S, the game crashes when revs pass
4000 rpm. With the Corvette it happens before 1000 rpm.
My Wine version is 0.9.45 on a Gentoo Linux 2.6.20 x86_64 single core.

Hello,
yes it's a bug in mono's assembly loader hook -> AOT code.
Judging from ximian/bugzilla comments the people there are not very interested
nor helpful "-> WONTFIX".
There are two options how to get around this...
============
1. Fix the stuff in mono source
The call chain until the bug goes as follows (pseudo/simplified):
mono_assembly_load_corlib( ASCII "v2.0.50727")
mono_assembly_open_full( ASCII "C:\Program
Files\Mono-1.2.5\lib\mono\2.0\mscorlib.dll" )
mono_assembly_load_from_full( ASCII "C:\Program
Files\Mono-1.2.5\lib\mono\2.0\mscorlib.dll" )
mono_assembly_invoke_load_hook( mscorlib)
which invokes runtime hook: load_aot_module( mscorlib)
-- quote mono/mono/mini/aot-runtime.c ---
static void
load_aot_module (MonoAssembly *assembly, gpointer user_data)
{
...
if (use_aot_cache)
assembly->aot_module = load_aot_module_from_cache (assembly,
&aot_name);
else {
char *err;
aot_name = g_strdup_printf ("%s%s", assembly->image->name,
SHARED_EXT);
assembly->aot_module = mono_dl_open (aot_name, MONO_DL_LAZY,
&err);
if (!assembly->aot_module) {
mono_trace (G_LOG_LEVEL_INFO, MONO_TRACE_AOT, "AOT
failed to load AOT module %s: %s\n", aot_name, err);
g_free (err);
}
}
...
-- quote mono/mono/mini/aot-runtime.c ---
"assembly->image->name" contains already full assembly path ("C:\Program
Files\Mono-1.2.5\lib\mono\2.0\mscorlib.dll")
So blindly appending SHARED_EXT is not a good idea in this case.
The same ".dll.dll" bug exists on native windows too.
Though the win32 mono_dl_open() version seems to be more conservative in error
handling (load hook cleanly exits).
============
Another way to get around:
2. use AOT cache to prevent buggy code path from executed (which involves wine
workaround due to missing msvcrt api)
Set environ var "MONO_AOT_CACHE"
Running the app with wine will result in a crash due to unimplemented msvcrt
api:
--- snip ---
Mono-INFO: Assembly Loader probing location: 'C:\Program
Files\Mono-1.2.5\lib\mono\2.0\mscorlib.dll'.
Mono-INFO: Image addref mscorlib 00141910 -> C:\Program

Mono-INFO: AOT not found.
Mono-Message: AOT precompiling assembly 'C:\Program
Files\Mono-1.2.5\lib\mono\2.0\mscorlib.dll'...
wine: Call from 0x7b840aa0 to unimplemented function msvcrt.dll._wspawnvp,
aborting
err:seh:setup_exception stack overflow 144 bytes in thread 0016 eip 7b840b3f
esp 00410f70 stack 0x411000-0x620000
--- snip ---
Quick fix is to use native msvcrt.dll (winecfg).
After that, .net apps should start successfully.
Though adding msvcrt._wspawnvp() should be a piece of cake, because the ANSI
version is already in place.
Regards.

Hi, i tracked this bug down to this: a CDM_GETSPEC message is sent with
lParam=0 (which is rather useless as far as i can see); that's where the crash
seems to come from. The patch attached avoids the crash, and the application
continues happily. Still not 100% sure if this is the right fix, so if anyone
could have a look , that'd be cool. Found some more info about this here:

I seem to have similar in both 0.9.44 and 0.9.45 (sounds_french in my case
though). Installing from an ISO doesn't help.
Any obviously useful debug strings to look at?

I get the same problem using wine-0.9.45 compiled from source when trying to
print a report generated by QREPORT in a Delphi program
The report prints in black & white.

When I enable window management, I still see this problem with 0.9.44 using
metacity as the window manager. I have a Windows application which I would
like to use under Wine which uses tooltips for help everywhere, and this makes
it practically unusable with managed windows (desirable).
I'm interested in helping to fix the problem too, but would need some clues
where to look in the code base if the patches already included on this bug are
wrong in some way.
Thanks,
Andrew McMillan.
