Troopmaster has ended it's test subscription for Wine. VirtualBox from Innotek
www.virtualbox.org is the preferred Windows emulator for Troopmaster. Thank
you everyone for your help. Please feel free to purchase Troopmaster if you
wish to continue making Wine work with Troopmaster.

I confirm that they have the same positive effect; note that in a thread
on wine-devel, James has some concern that a test case should be written.

I think i'll send Anastasius' patch to wine-patches, so one can at least load
the media files from the file browser using native comdlg32. I did a bit more
testing, and one also has to use native quartz to get a video playing. So
that's two bugs in the app here (comdlg32 and quartz).

Does this one have the same behaviour? If so, could you give exact steps to
make it crash ( i couldn't get it crashing, but i dunno really how to use the

I think the bug was it was just hiding a messagebox behind the splash screen. I
installed mdac, and then the app asked to download some kind of database engine
(all run in virtual desktop to see the hidden dialogboxes) . I did, and it
started fine. I posted screenshot here:
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=7398
(There is also a "golden" test-result reported there)

I bet this app fills the box using EM_REPLACESEL and thus falls victim to the
same issue as in bug 8330. (When using EM_REPLACESEL, windows does not respect
the limit, but wine does)

Jeremy, that patch looks more or less right to me. From MSDN on
MsiFormatRecord's hRecord parameter:
"Handle to the record to format. The template string must be stored in record
field 0 followed by referenced data parameters."
So if that's missing, MsiFormatRecordA/W should probably return an empty
string.

The immediate cause of the crash is in dlls/msi/format.c,
MSI_FormatRecordW. The record being duplicated has 0 fields,
and build_default_format also returns NULL.
That then leads to an exception, crashing the install process.
It's not clear what the further details are, and why I see
this and others don't.
Attaching a +relay,+msi,+seh,+rpc around the relevant bits,
as well as a hack I used to get beyond this.
The hack allowed me to proceed, but then the installer got a further
crash towards the end that left some processes around.
iTunes seems to be there and kinda sorta works (can't access
the store, but...)

I see an installation failure with 7.4.1.2 as well.
Etch; moderately up to date. Clean git as of today,
after a make distclean. Clean ~/.wine (just use winecfg
to set winver to Windows XP).
Last few lines of log include:
err:msi:deformat_environment Unknown environment variable L"ALLUSERSPROFILE"
fixme:msi:msi_unimplemented_action_stub MigrateFeatureStates -> 4 ignored
L"Upgrade" table values
err:msi:ITERATE_Actions Execution halted, action L"InstallWelcome" returned
1602
The installer GUI itself doesn't seem to notice that anything is wrong; no
error. But there is clearly no itunes related files installed in ~/.wine

patch
There are two more small differences that a paranoid program could interpret as
tampering - we create a dispatch thread for each service while Windows executes
all advapi32 code in the thread that called StartServiceCtrlDispatcher; and it
seems the program should be started as c:\Program Files\... while
GetModuleFileName returns C:\Program Files\... Hacks in the attached patch
fixes both issues but it makes no difference to Photoshop
There is a list of commonly used anti-debugger techinques at
http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1893 but I haven't found that the service
used then (there are some checks from the Photoshop process but after them the
service is started so it seems they are negative).

Can you retest this bug? I found and fixed a bug in the stateblock code which
could cause that. The code attempted to duplicate a list. It created a copy of
the first element in the source list, but instead of attaching it to the
destination list, it attached it to the source list again.

For me, the game works under Ubuntu 7.04.
Here is my configuration
- wine version 0.9.42 (works with 0.9.44 too)
- winecfg -> Affichage -> Emuler un bureau virtuel (640x480)
(Display -> Virtual desktop, or something like that)
- winecfg -> Audio -> Emulation
- mount CD iso in /media/cdrom0
- install the game in "/opt/jeux/heart_of_darkness"
- run "wine HODWin32.exe" inside the game directory (whereas the game doesn't
start)
Hope this helps...
Note : this is the french version of the game, doesn't know if that matter.

Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x000003b8 in 32-bit code
(0x7e9a5434).
=>1 0x7e9a5434 GetObjectW+0x44() in gdi32 (0x0033e290)
2 0x7eb506a1 ImageList_AddMasked+0xa1() in comctl32 (0x0033e310)
3 0x0045cbc8 in i_view32 (+0x5cbc8) (0x0000039c)
It'd be worth reproducing in a debug copy of wine to see line numbers.
Maybe this is a garden variety imagelist bug.

I will close the bug as a duplicate of 5729. There are still some reflection
and shadow shaders that do not compile properly yet, and a shader failing to
compile or link can cause severe slowdown in the driver.

A bunch of shader patches I've been working on
This is a dump of the patches in my git tree that aren't yet in mainline
because Alexandre was on vacation for a week. Some of them make Settlers 2
playable for me, it looks quite good now with reasonable performance.(gf 7400,
core 2 duo, (almost) highest graphics). The only real issue is that shadow
settings have to be set to lowest, and there is a problem if the reflection
settings are set to lowest.
Feel free to give those patches a try, they should get into mainline the next
weeks.

Guessing from the errors in #16, it might be that the application draws
pretransformed vertices with a ps 3.0 pixel shader bound that expects the
varyings passed in from the vertex stream. This will require a pipeline
replacement shader, although it should be quite simple for pretransformed
vertices.
I'm downloading the demo, maybe I see what is going wrong there.

I think it's time to wrap this bug up as fixed. From what I hear, installers
aren't blocking a 1.0 release anymore. There are a few extreme corner cases
that need to be fixed, but on the whole installers aren't an issue anymore.

The black screen is produced by QuickTime when it starts up.
The setupapi message are produced by iTunes when it runs, so it'll never return
unless you quit it - try looking in the system tray for an icon you can
right-click on to exit it.

(expect sound) sometimes about 30 seconds, sometimes 30 minutes, but after that

Created an attachment (id=8024)

More evidence of a display mode problem
The game performs a lock in a 640x480 surface and then tries to write to an
invalid memory position (which would be "writeable" if the surface was
800x600).
This is when the menu shows up. I am 99% sure that the game "needs" the menu
screen resolution set to 800x600, but it currently shows at 640x480.
Possibly the problematic surface is being created with a size equal to the
screen resolution, which is wrong with current git.
And the game code handling the surface buffer expects an 800x600 sized surface,
hard-coded (lazy programming :) )

Don't unload libraries for components loaded as "Both" immediately
These two patches should implement the same behaviour as native DCOM. However,
there still appears to be one or more bugs in other modules that this patch is
just hiding. The most recent log with builtin dlls showed a crash in
winealsa.drv, probably caused by a thread that was still running code in
winealsa.drv after it was unloaded.

It appears that after setting fullscreen WM hint Wine gets ConfigureNotify with
the full virtual size:
trace:x11drv:X11DRV_ConfigureNotify win 0x500b6 new X rect 0,0,1024x768 (event
0,0,1024x768 # 66)

trace:x11drv:X11DRV_ConfigureNotify win 0x500b6 new X rect 0,0,1600x1200 (event
0,0,1600x1200 # 67)
First one from creating and showing the main window, second from setting
fullscreen WM hint. Not entirely sure what should be done here. Should we
ignore ConfigureNotify if the size of the window is bigger then display? Should
we even set fullscreen WM hint for XVidMode?

Run the installer with winefile and eject with 'wine eject'. The current

With the new version of GFFinder2 2.4.4 these problems are gone.
It was obviously some incompatibility problem in the old version.
So I guess it can be seen as fixed now.

It seems it really is a display mode issue...
The menu screen is supposed to be in 800x600 mode, but it opens in 640x480 with
current git, right before crashing.
Also, looking in the traces, current git has many of these calls:
trace:d3d:transform_projection Calling glOrtho with 640.000000, 480.000000,
-0.000000, -1.000000
As opposed to git 0.9.30, which shows many of these calls:
trace:d3d:transform_projection Calling glOrtho with 800.000000, 600.000000,
-0.000000, -1.000000
If you have any hints on which source files/functions should I go after, please
tell me. I've been looking into these:
- ddraw/ddraw.c
- wined3d/directx.c
- wined3d/device.c
but still haven't figured anything.

Even if workaround present, it's impossible to view html messages from server,
some of them contain agreement which you have to approve to play, else you will
be kicked.
Also many servers features are controlled by htmls.
I mean to fix this is very important, please.

my CS freezes when displaying Welcome message,
also when download begins and displaying a banner.
possible mshtml issue.
may be bug 6534 related.
All paths related to CS dir (e.g. cstrike\maps -> c:\games\cs\cstrike\maps)
Workaround at present:
rm cstrike/*.html (download.html, motd_temp.html)
chmod a-w cstrike
little explanation:
When CS connects to server it MAY download some resourses (files), during
download it MAY get from server some html and write it to cstrike/download.html
then shows it as banner.
When cs completes loading during game connection it get from server some html
and wtite it to cstrike/motd_temp.html then shows it.
My guesses:
I've tried to iexplore some html by specifying related path - it's not working.
(e.g. wine iexplore some_html.html
or wine iexplore .\some_html.html
or wine iexplore cstrike\motd_temp.html)
I can't find in sources where the path to html doc constructs so I don't know
whether it mshtml or iexplore issue, but may be mshtml. If so, CS may specify
related path to download.html, and all hangs then.

2) In addition to ASIO_INPUTS and ASIO_OUTPUTS, you can also specify

That is fair that it is a low priority. Can we refer users to the VC

add a link on the winehq site or wiki) or is there something in the licensing

The difference I can see is the enumeration order of the pixel formats. The
original code enumerates D3DFMT_R5G6B5(16 bit) -> D3DFMT_P8 (8 bit) ->
D3DFMT_X8R8G8B8 (32 bit), but the current code enumerates
D3DFMT_X8R8G8B8->D3DFMT_R5G6B5->D3DFMT_P8

Log using current git
In the git version right before the aforementioned patch the menu shows up and
I was even able to start a battle. It is unplayable though because of low-frame
rates, but the graphics do look perfect.
In the versions since that patch and later, the game crashes right in the
moment on which the menu shows up. The menu is also not displayed correctly.
I don't know about the behavior in older versions, since I've only started
playing around with Wine recently.
I've tried to "undo" the changes made in that patch to the current git, putting
the old IDirectDrawImpl_EnumDisplayModesCB function to work and changing
IDirectDrawImpl_EnumDisplayModes accordingly. It crashed though, maybe it is
imcompatible with the current DirectX implementation?

Thomas - HKCU/Software/Wine/X11 Driver/ScreenDepth
Martin - The 32-bit that the games expect is really just 24-bit. 32-bit
graphics in Windows just refers to 24-bit colour with an 8-bit alpha channel,
which X.org does support.

I'm using a NO-CD and the 'skip-intro' workaround to launch the game.

devenum is returning S_OK from DllCanUnloadNow and yet an object appears to
still be in use, so it appears to be a bug in devenum. However, I'm puzzled as
to why it doesn't show up with native DCOM. Can you do a +relay,+snoop,+devenum
log for both native DCOM installed and without DCOM installed? Thanks.
