(Changed title to something more useful, changed category as this looks not a
ddraw bug)
Hi Ryan, I had a look at the debug log of the demo. Some highlights:
0011:Call advapi32.RegCreateKeyExA(80000002,00391bdc "Software\\Wildfire
Studios\\Balls of Steel\\Display profile",00000000,

0011:Ret advapi32.RegQueryValueExA() retval=00000002 ret=0040be3d
It cannot find the registry key HKLM\\Software\\Wildfire Studios\\Balls of
Steel\\Display profile\\Refresh rate.
I set this key manually ( "Refresh rate" = "60" and the demo starts up fine
then. Ryan, could you check 2 things please:
1. Can you get the retail version running by setting this key.
2. Could you check if this key is present after a default install on windows. If
so, something might have gone wrong during install of the app

Using wine 0.9.39 and when i try and run wine BVE.exe, i get a message box pop

Now this message comes up from the String.ini file in the same directory as the

Then you can hook malloc and friends, there are plenty
of tools for doing that.
Please don't reopen this. Wine and valgrind are really, truly not
the tool you want for this limited task. You might well want
Valgrind to help you find wild pointer references, but that's
a different kind of problem.

Any time you need to use a native Windows DLL in wine, it's a bug in Wine.
Not sure how you can call this a nonbug.

This bug is not correct:
uuencoded inline JPEG files display correctly in Xnews.
The person who posted this bug is mistaken, or has gotten it wrong and should
rethink his position on this (non)bug.
My setup:
Xnews/2006.08.24
configured as running Win2k in winecfg
Wine: 0.9.9
Platform: Ubuntu 6.0.6
To display inline uuencoded JPEG images my setup uses the following libraries
from Windows 2000 pro and are placed into the Xnews folder:
COMCTL32.DLL
OLE32.DLL
OLEAUT32.DLL
RICHED20.DLL
RICHED32.DLL
These are the only native DLLs required for the correct running of Xnews in Wine
and the two OLE DLLs are whats required if you want to display inline uuencoded
JPEGs in Xnews.

I think I need to apologize. Because I tend to be overly cautious with my
computers, I've left mine turned off in this heatwave, and then tried to read
and answer several days worth of email. This also means that my attention span
was not at its best.
The inexperienced way in which I took your emails made it look as though you had
been insencere. For this misinterpretatation I must apologize. Apparently, you
did in fact try to help me with this minor bug, and as you've written the fault
may not be due to WINE.
I hope then, that answering your messages, this time without re-opening the bug
report, is not taken as an offense, as my earlier mistake probably was.
BTW I did run wineboot. But as I've said, I didn't even install the same WINE
software on both machines, and don't recall whether I had insructed Acro Reader
to install a menu entry. Since you've looked at the files and found no errors.
So what I'll do, is wait for the next available *Windows* application to install
under WINE on the Box acting as my server, which could take weeks, before
forming any more opinions or claims.
I hope, then, that my continued use of WINE will also be okay with you guys. {:-?}

Hi,
This started happening in 0.9.41: CD game music in Heroes of Might and Magic
II (The Succession Wars) does not play anymore, nor MIDI music when chosen.
However, other sound effects do (horse riding, battle noises, nature noises,
etc.). The CD seems to be spinning normally though no music can be heard (I
checked out the CD plays off-game).
The following error pop-up is shown after the intro logo and right before the
main menu (only when turning WINEDEBUG=warn+all):
Assert statement failed in module D:\Heroes2\Base\soundmgr.cpp, line 66. Do
you wish to abort the program?
After answering "no", the game proceeds normally into the main menu.
However, this error seems to happen randomly as sometimes does not appear. In
this case, the following lines are issued (see attachment)

This is not a use support place! This is place to report Wine bugs. You clearly
can not show that the _problem_ you having caused by Wine.
The reason I can state that, because I have tested multiple installations,
versions, distros, etc and encountered such behavior you describing. However in
all case it was either:
1. A broken "feature" in disto's addition to KDE.
2. Problem of KDE when mixing old / new menu structure.
3. User error (deleting/hiding links from menu) or not running wineboot.
1) and 2) could be easily spotted when running menu editor and _browsing
existing_ menu structure - the part you still have not clarified.
> Well first of all, by trying to answer your question, I can't comply with your
> request, that I not reopen the bug report.
You have not _clearly_ answered my question(s) yet.
> But then the question you had used to close the bug report was also a fiction,
> since it as not meant to be answered.
Since you don't care in troubleshooting Wine, I gave you a workaround and closed
bug as the only signs of the problem you gave describe 1), 2)or 3).
> Now you're telling me, after clearly not looking at the file output I've sent
I have looked at the file and seen that Wine have created all the proper files
in all the proper places as stated by XDG Freedesktop standard.
> I've written are identical in Linux distributions. So it makes perfect sense
> to you that the same KDE is buggy on one computer and not the other, even
> though I'm not having any problems, outside of running WINE.
All possible reasons for the bug 1), 2) or 3) are not 100% repeatable (except of
course the same user doing the same mistake).
Anyway. You failed to show any bugs in Wine. Your problem is _not_ caused by bug
in Wine but bug in KDE (as in your distro's KDE version, not vanilla). Or
misconfiguration yours or distro's.

Well first of all, by trying to answer your question, I can't comply with your
request, that I not reopen the bug report.
But then the question you had used to close the bug report was also a fiction,
since it as not meant to be answered.
Now you're telling me, after clearly not looking at the file output I've sent
you, that you believe the KDE is at fault on one out of two computers, which
I've written are identical in Linux distributions. So it makes perfect sense to
you that the same KDE is buggy on one computer and not the other, even though
I'm not having any problems, outside of running WINE.
Next, you follow the Microsoft example of practice, by asking me in writing to
submit proof that I had done what you told me to do, even though the results are
in the files I submitted.
But then as I already said, your questions are of a theatrical nature, since
answering them causes you to break out in bold-faced temper-tantrums.
Please don't ask me any more fictitious questions. I don't need WINE that badly.
Dirk

I clearly stated "Also please run `kmenuedit` and verify that Wine entries
really do not exist." It _DOES NOT_ say "because you had told me to edit them in".
Remove ~/.config/menus/, ~/.local/share/applications, ~/.local/share/icons
And reinstall programs under Wine.
I DO NOT ASK FOR ANYTHING ELSE!!! YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REMOVE WINE. YOU DO NOT
HAVE TO REINSTALL WHOLE YOUR DISTRO. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO _ANYTHING_ ELSE!!!
If this instructions are WAY OVER YOUR HEAD then please do not ever bother
reporting bugs!!!
Again INVALID. THIS IS PROBLEM WITH KDE FOR NOT PICKING UP NEW ENTRIES NOT WINE!!!

I'm sorry. For the past few days, we in Montreal have had such a heatwave, that
it would have been dangerous for me even to start up my main computer. For that
reason, I could not read the message connected to your decisions, and found it
hard to guess their logic.
Thus, I also didn't know that you had posed me any questions.
In your first response, you told me in writing, that you wanted me to edit the
K-Menu manually, before submitting my files. This is the reason for which the
K-Menu entries were present.
But how am I supposed to guess, that you would forget what your instructions to
me were just 2 days earlier, when I already submitted the information to you,
that WINE correctly creates those menus on my Kanotix 2006-RC4 Laptop, but not
on my Kanotix 2006-RC4 server.
My only explanation for this, is the fact that on the v0.9.40 install on my
server, I had tried to uninstall the Arasan Chess program, without knowing how
to do that properly. While on the Laptop (v0.9.40) I had never tried to rip the
first program out, which I had installed.
This is the main reason for which I think that the v0.9.42 WINE reinstallation
now on my server may be working properly, since I never reinstalled a chess
program that can't be uninstalled. The second reason is the fact that you forgot
that the K-menu entries were persent, because you had told me to edit them in.
I have Adobe Acro Reader 5.0.5 insalled on my v0.9.42 server, for which there is
still no K-Menu entry, but for which there is a desktop icon. How do you explain
this?
Dirk

wgl: wglChooosePixelFormatARB returns the total number of matching
pixelformats and not the number of pixelformats stored in the buffer.
This didn't work due to bugs in wglChoosePixelFormatARB but also due
to strange behavior of glXChooseFBConfig. Some of its default values
are not zero or GLX_DONT_CARE which cause some formats not to appear.

Screenshot before crash
The installer looks like this throughout the time until it crashes.
Apparently there is supposed to be a grey box, saying 'please wait' that
appears before the installer loads, but this one has no text on it.

Hi,
My mistake. I found the reason that I didnt have any installation problems is
because each time I tried to install iTunes 6 I tried v7 first. Oh and we both
have the same m5d checksum
So to install v6 attempt an install of v7 first (It quits before fully
installing though!) then install v6
Woops

Yes, it is needed by logoff.exe in the ReactOS project.
The other needed functions have at least been implemented as stubs, but it seems WTFLogoffSession has been forgotten alltogether. Not even a stub.
Please add the function to wtsapi32.h and atleast a stub in wtsapi32.c.

You looking in the wrong place. This change fixed the behavior that was broken
before. Now something else doesn't work, because it was relaying on the broken code.
Where is the problem - I do not know. Is the patch correct? Yes, there are tests
to prove it.
I don not have a single program/game that exhibits this problem. All of them
behave the same exact way as they are on windows.

Summary: Diablo II: graphics go haywire after being covered by
another window
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.42.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-x11driver
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: owen.riddy(a)gmail.com
Diablo II can be started and run normally, as it has been for past versions of
wine.
Up until version 9.42 it has been flawless, however since the upgrade to .42,
every time another application window covers the window Diablo is running in,
the game graphics vanish, to be replaced by a small Diablo head icon and some
small blue box (attaching image, and terminal output). Also occurs if game loses
focus.
I tried with the virtual desktop at 1024x768 & default settings, with no dll
overrides, and running the game at full screen (I got a proper error message
then: Error 25: A critical error has occurred while initializing Direct3D).
CPU usage spikes (50-100%) after the game window is returned to focus.
I'm running Ubuntu 7.04, Kernel 2.6.20-16, on a Dell Insperon 1300 laptop, if
that helps ^_^.
I'm not an expert, but I went through the terminal output, and it looks like the
issue is with:
fixme:ddraw:IDirectDrawImpl_SetCooperativeLevel (0x1e8ca0)->(0x10024,00000411)
fixme:x11drv:X11DRV_desktop_SetCurrentMode Cannot change screen BPP from 32 to 16

I have installed valgrind 3.2.3 before wine 0.9.42, ./configure --prefix=/usr.
I have found that wine 0.9.42 knows about Valgrind, because
$WINE_SRC/include/config.h says "#define HAVE_VALGRIND_MEMCHECK_H 1"
ls -lta /usr/include/valgrind/valgrind.h
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 146801 Aug 2
22:17 /usr/include/valgrind/valgrind.h
So I think my valgrind+wine is very well installed.
But when wine translate my winapp into elf, lost the backtrace of function.
Your can build the following app on windows(mulithread support), and use
wine+valgrind on Linux, but can't find any memory leak,,,.
#include "string.h"
#include "stdlib.h"
#include "stdio.h"
int main(int argc, char* argv[])
{
char *x, *y;
x = (char *)malloc(32);
y = (char *)malloc(16);
x[30] = '\0';
y[15] = '\0';
printf("Hello World!\n");
return 0;
}

The bug is easy to reproduce. Use File > New, draw a shape with a brush and
change the width of the history palette. After the first or second change Wine
will lock. Locking of other apps ocures maybe because when resizing we grab the
mouse. After one minute there is a timeout on the critical section and Pohtoshop
is killed.
The other thread is executing XQueryPointer in X11DRV_GetCursorPos. Adding
timestamps show that this is one call that doesn't return. On the stack traces
of other threads I haven't notived any X11 activity.

No. The sound still isn't perfect, but it mostly works fine and is very usable
now (a few isolated things in wa--no sound on the "loading" screen, beeps seem

I can spend more time looking into and describing the current audio situation

As a hack you can try to edit dlls/winex11.drv/opengl.c
Go to the function X11DRV_ChoosePixelFormat it should be around line 1000 (my
opengl.c contains some new work, so I don't know the real line number).
Then lets say after:
if (TRACE_ON(opengl)) {
TRACE("(%p,%p)\n", physDev, ppfd);
dump_PIXELFORMATDESCRIPTOR((const PIXELFORMATDESCRIPTOR *) ppfd);
}
Add a line:
return 1;
Then recompile and see what happens.
BTW your Nvidia drivers haven't been installed properly. You are mixing the
libraries and kernel module of different driver versions.

Garret, the problem is that the installer runs the following query:
SELECT Feature, Feature_Parent, Title, Description, Display, Level, Directory_,
Attributes FROM Feature WHERE Feature_Parent=? ORDER BY Feature.Display
where ? is CoreDLLs.EWB.CORE.100. Using orca to look in the merged database,
CoreDLLs.EWB.CORE.100 is not a feature parent for any other feature, so this
query returns ERROR_NO_MORE_ITEMS, which the installer isn't expecting (I assume
this is the case, because it bails at this point).

In reality it's only a 60s delay. It's because the downloaded executable only
unpacks a second stage installer into windows\temp. The second stage installer
unpacks some more files and when it arrives at 99% it broadcasts about 600
"LOGO_MSG_LOGOSTATUS_30" messages. But the first stage installer is still active
with a hidden window and it's message loop contains PeekMessage interleaved with
WaitForSingleObject on the second process with a 100ms timeout. That gives the
60s delay. I don't know yet how it works under Windows and what Wine is doing
incorrectly.
A workaround is to start the second-stage installer from windows\temp - that way
there is no first-stage installer window.

Hey, I take it back. Wine already has the needed
annotations in dlls/ntdll/heap.c. So Wine already
knows about Valgrind, and vice versa!
Perhaps the copy of Wine you used was compiled
on a system that was missing /usr/include/valgrind/valgrind.h.
So, Littlestar, if you install valgrind before building wine,
does that solve your problem?

| The problem is that your Freetype version is too old (2.1.4) and it doesn't
| support Wine bitmap fonts. Therefore Wine replaces its builtin bitmap font
| "System" by an one provided by your system "Adventure" (/usr/share/fonts/ttf/
| western/Adventure.ttf) and that one doesn't have characters you need.
|
| You can install microsoft core fonts package to workaround this problem, or
| upgrade Freetype to at least version 2.1.9.
OK. There is still "CCNI" in place of "ÄÄNI".

So at least Wine thinks that FreeType 2.3.5 is used ...
So it probably also some other library ....

Never say never :-)
Also, it's not clear mono supports this yet.

Well I'm stumped, I can't get anything to work. I even tried sticking the
original and the new version together with in an || operator, but that didn't
work. This leads be to believe it's supposed to return false somewhere, and it
does with the original, but not with the new one.
Do you think it could be something to do with the is_desktop_window() function,
which returns !win->parent. Maybe something is screwed up so the spawn screen
and other overlay stuff have no parent, so it thinks it's the desktop when it's
not? I'm just throwing it out there, I don't know if that's possible or not.

No it doesn't look ok. The whole propose of the patch was to allow Desktop to
receive focus.
That function is used in only one place. That place is responsible for letting
user space know to send activate/deactivate messages to windows when foreground
window changes (see set_foreground_window in dlls/user32/focus.c).
All that simply means that any app that calls SetForegroundWindow
(GetDesktopWindow()) will work properly while it didn't work before at all in Wine.
On the side note, virtual desktop does not guarantee proper focus handling. If
you have such problems you should not use virtual-desktop.

Similar to bug 6120 for the unexpected crash, but they may or may not be
linked within the code: The metascore@ thingy from bug 6120 seems like steam
is trying to update the order of a list, and this bug, I don't think there is
any changes in the steam interface.
---
I was trying to install counter strike : source from steam. Also, it was a
fresh wine install; during the steam installation, wine asked to install gecko
to render page within wine, so I assume it was wine_gecko. I'll remove it
and reinstall everything just to make sure and post the results again.

Ok this is easily fixed by adding win->parent to the && list which was removed
in the patch:
- return (win && (is_desktop_window(win) || is_desktop_window(win->parent)));
+ return (win && win->parent && (is_desktop_window(win) ||
is_desktop_window(win->parent)));
Does this look ok?

Summary: GuildWars no sound at all
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.42.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx-dmusic
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: SklCrusher(a)hotmail.com
I have tried to run GuildWars using any of the 4 audio drives provided by wine:
ALSA
EsounD
OSS
NAS
but when ever any of these audio drivers are active in wine, GuildWars won't
launch. It triggers a memory leak in GW.exe (GuildWars executable). I am
successfully able to run GuildWars without any problems if none of the drivers
are selected.
I have downloaded Halo 1 and Halo works fine with ALSA and Esound audio drivers
on my machine.
Does anyone has any idea what could be causing this issue on GuildWars? Is
there anything I can change in Wine to get sound on GuildWars? Any help will be
really appreciated.

Well the problem seems to be with this change in server/window.c:
- return (win && win->parent && is_desktop_window(win->parent));
+ return (win && (is_desktop_window(win) || is_desktop_window(win->parent)));
The simplest explanation I can find of a top-level window is "children of the
root window". I don't understand how the desktop is the child of another window,
I would have thought it'd be at the bottom of the pile so to speak. Can you
explain to me why this change is necessary?
Cheers.
