Have you tried (re)moving ~/.wine directory and reinstalling the game? If still
doesn't work, then probably a duplicate of bug 9120.

The problem is that your Freetype version is too old (2.1.4) and it doesn't
support Wine bitmap fonts. Therefore Wine replaces its builtin bitmap font
"System" by an one provided by your system "Adventure" (/usr/share/fonts/ttf/
western/Adventure.ttf) and that one doesn't have characters you need.
You can install microsoft core fonts package to workaround this problem, or
upgrade Freetype to at least version 2.1.9.
Marking this bug as invalid.

Summary: Halo: Combat Evolved full screen does not get focus in
0.9.42
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.42.
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: weed_richard(a)hotmail.com
I have halo.exe configured to NOT use the window manager and directx is set to
stop mouse from leaving window. I start up Halo and, when it gets to the game
menu, the keyboard does not work.
This *did* also happen in 0.9.41, but I found a work-around for 0.9.41:
1. Start up Halo.
2. When first intro movie starts, I hit the space bar. This caused the desktop
to reappear with just a small 1"x1" remnant of the game window in the upper left.
3. Them I immediately hit Enter. This caused the game to go full screen again.
If I touched no other keys before the game menu appeared, I could use the
keyboard normally and play the game.
I have not found a work-around for this yet in 0.9.42. I have to say this game
worked excellent for me on my 4800x2 AMD processor and nVidia 7800GTX and would
like to see this fixed.

More info about SELENDCANCEL: the simple type never sends it (this is probably
the same in wine as it is sent in the roll up procedure).
Both dropdown lists do the same weird thing: They only send it if the list is
closed by clicking outside instead of releasing mouse button (this is probably
more a bug than a feature in Windows) Does Wine send cancel in both cases? It is
probably okay or even better if cancel is sent in both cases. It doesn't make
much sense that there is a difference...
CBN_SELENDOK and then a CBN_SELCHANGE is sent instead of the cancel if the mouse
is released outside in MS Windows, like you selected something but the old
selection is not changed.
CBN_SELENDCANCEL is also sent for both of CBS_DROPDOWN or CBS_DROPDOWNLIST when
they lose focus.
CBN_SELENDOK is also sent by the CBS_SIMPLE if you press the return key in the
edit box, but without any CBN_SELCHANGE...

Simple test
A little test. Shows the text returned by GetDlgItemText (WM_GETTEXT does the
same of course) in CBN_SELCHANGE. The middle combo box should not lag behind as
it is of CBS_DROPDOWNLIST style. For the upper and lower one the selection
should lag behind one selection when you select different strings in the list.
It also shows when CBN_SELENDOK or CBN_SELENDCANCEL was received. These should
come before CBN_SELCHANGE. On Windows it seems CBN_SELENDCANCEL is not sent if
you keep the mouse button pressed and release it outside the list. CBN_SELENDOK
and CBN_SELCHANGE are sent then.

although this is in no way a supported method and I don't know if this would
result in a working product. Minimally the product would require nilm, ewbcore,

Can you give me more information about this table? Unfortunately, I don't know
much about msi (beyond it being a database), but I do know someone who is very
familiar with this particular installer that might be able to give more
information about what is expected.
As I'm you you know since, any and all information you can provide would be
useful for me to pass on.
On another note, I noticed that I can become an advocate for this product at
codeweavers. Does wine have a preference for this?

Created an attachment (id=7383)
--> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=7383&action=view)
console output with native dinput and dinput8.dll
I had a dinput8.dll next to dinput.dll in my native system32 dir.
It also said something about DirectInput8 in the log, and voila, no crash
anymore.... But sadly an unimplemented function.

Im experiencing this, too. In game, you can type your name when creating a
profile and Q-Key (exit) works, too. But arrow-keys, enter, backspace etc are
just ignored by the game.
When using native dinput.dll, the game doesn't even start. It crashes before
even displaying anything.

Join patch committed:
http://winehq.org/pipermail/wine-cvs/2007-August/034812.html
At this point, I'm not sure what the next problem is. The installer queries a
table that is empty, so the installer bails because, I guess, it expects the
table to not be empty. I don't know why the table is empty or how it's supposed
to be filled.

Also, when switching from WoW to another workspace on GNOME, the screen goes

I only chose major because when it crashes, if you fail to hit the exit button
on the popup it produces right away, your desktop becomes unusable until you go
to console to kill ragexe.exe manually. it's minor on it's own, but with this
complication, it can be major as well.

I'm getting "Cannot open AVI" error when trying to install the Czech "Money S3"

Wine version: Bug introduced in commit ddb4be2bb0d03ec9a6beccfcb688844087a4f0ea
Distro: Gentoo Linux 2007.0
GCC version: gcc (GCC) 4.1.2 (Gentoo 4.1.2)
Program: Battlefield 2142 retail/demo InstallShield installer
The demo can be downloaded from the URL listed in the URL field. It is
officially available from
ftp://largedownloads.ea.com/pub/demos/Battlefield/2142/Battlefield_2142_Dem…
, but that is a very slow server.
Commands (same result with each, first 2 are with the retail DVD, third is with
the demo):
-cd dosdevices/d:; wine Autorun.exe; select 'English'; click 'Install'
-cd dosdevices/d:; wine setup.exe; select 'English'
-wine setup.exe; select 'English'
Not sure if this happens with other programs, but between 0.9.40 and 0.9.41 the
installer for Battlefield 2142 (InstallShield) fails to start. With 0.9.40 it
would give the little loading box then show the main install window to install
the program. Now after it has loaded it just creates a box on the screen with
nothing in it (see attached screenshot). The box is 'always on top', it is
always above other windows.
I have done a regression test and this commit that is causing the problem:

I have attached the last 100 lines of output with WINEDEBUG=+relay. I also have
the full 217MB output (compressed into a nice little 2.8MB bzip2 package) should
it be needed. Note that this is up to the point where it freezes. There is
additional output when I kill the process, but I figure this is irrelevant so I

Dirk Mittler, you still did not answered the question - when you start the
kmenuedit do you see those menu entries or not?
You should open a bug with your distro instead. Some are known to alter default
KDE configuration / modify source that _does_ break Wine menu structure, along
with number of other applications. Wine can not and will not fix such problems.

It is up to your distribution to handle the menu entries. Wine sets it up the
way the FreeDesktop standard specifies, so it works in KDE/GNOME/etc, but it is
up to your particular distribution to support it.
Works fine for me in Kubuntu and Ubuntu, resolving invalid.

So this seems to be the secret to WINE's success-stories.
You simply supress all failure-reports.
I know for a fact that this bug is real.

It doesn't matter fi_FI or fi_FI.UTF-8 locale you have. You seem to miss
a lot of development packages. Why don't you simply use a precompiled
Wine package? Another source of the problem mught be your old distro.
Do you have an XRender extension in your X11 for instance?

they worked on xp sp1 i think. anyway i understand that wine cant support
something which needs special version of windows to run. so lets forget it
about these bat files with binary inside, its common thing in demoscene. details
are here: http://gem.intro.hu/cab_dropping.htm. wine can't run it, but you can
rename file to .cab, extract it using standart tools and inside is exe file
which can be run. in windows xp you can launch bat file and it will work directly

I can't get them to run on my XP version, SP2 build 2600. They just start
allocating memory with a black screen and then crash... and what's up with those
bat files with binary stuff in them? Neither the "bat" files or exes did
anything but allocate memory with a black screen with changed resolution.

I'm afraid this is not really a part of Wine. If you like to use valgrind with
Wine, then you will have to work with it's creators, and possibly add some
callbacks in Wine for it.
Wine's malloc does not call libc's malloc.

There is no longer "NI" on place of "ÄÄNI", but it looks like
it is "CCNI", which either is not have correct. Now there is
apparently wrong letters for "Ä" and "Ö".
Also there is wrong letters on "TYÖPÖYTÄINTEGRAATIO". "Ö" seems
also be replaced with "C" or something like that.

There are 2 problems with this:
1. Wine reports Type1 fonts in OpenType format as TRUETYPE_FONTTYPE (4), while
Windows reports DEVICE_FONTTYPE (2) in that case. Probably cooltype renderer
is confused by that.
2. I'm not sure whether GetFontData(table == 0) works correctly, i.e. returns
data starting from the beginning of a font file as per MSDN. Currently we rely
on FreeType in that case.
Once I simply return GDI_ERROR in GetFontData(table == 0) the crash is gone,
but still Photoshop doesn't draw the text (since we don't return font data to
it).

Notepad also does not work for me:
http://cs.ozerki.net/zap/img/wine-sharing-violation.jpg (148K).
Also mingw32 and command-line MSVC compiler will fail to open such a file. I
found this problem because of this - the headers were used via Samba by somebody
and I was compiling some project locally, and it often barfs at miscelaneous
header files that happen to be opened by somebody via Samba at that time.

This is a very recent regression, as my
appdb review shows the menus were working in wine-0.9.38.
Also, not all operations (e.g. add file to project)
seem to have keyboard shortcuts, so it looks like the
IDE really can't be tested properly until this is fixed.
i.e. I haven't figured out how to even try to reproduce bug 5321.

No, the infoviewer problem was already there
before (bug 5320), the new problem is that
trying to use any of the menus (like File)
is frustrating because it pops away immediately.
You can still use the IDE by using keyboard
shortcuts (like ^N for New), but it's pretty frustrating.

Visual C++ 4.0 installs ok modulo a few
nonshowstoppers (bug 6514, bug 9159).
But when you start the ide, it now
plops you into the "infoviewer", and
when you try to get out, the app terminates.
I think this worked with wine-0.9.23, so there seems to have been
a recent regression. I'll do the regression hunt when I
get a chance.

Still happening with today's git.
Each time you hit 'ignore' it starts a new program manager.
Hitting 'Cancel' skips creating program icons, and lets
you complete installation.
This affects quite a few old apps, e.g. Lotus 1-2-3 for Win 3.1.

To repeat:
rm -rf .wine
wine dotnetfx3setup.exe
First problem is similar to bug 5351, you have to
make drive_c be named harddiskvolume1 by doing
cd .wine
ln -s drive_c harddiskvolume1
cd dosdevices
rm c:
ln -s ../harddiskvolume1 c:
before it will get far. (Oddly, bug 5351 doesn't mention the
second ln -s, I'm just assuming it's needed.)
Second problem is the inner installer fails, so the outer
installer says there was a problem copying the last
file (lame). Work around this by aborting, then
cd'ing to the directory in c: containing the unpacked inner installer.
Third problem (well, maybe second) is that the inner installer
fails immediately unless you set winxp with winecfg. But at least
when running the inner installer directly you get a nice error dialog.
Fourth problem is the EULA is completely garbage, all punctuation.
But you can still accept it.
Fifth problem is Wine hangs with the dreaded
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x110020 "heap.c: main process heap
section" wait timed out in thread 0017, blocked by 0013, retrying (60 sec)
message, and eventually crashes with
err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000194 flags 0 addr 0x7ef97fa0
(though maybe the hang was when it tried to use winedbg).

I mailed him on July 10th pointing to this bug, and he said

of HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA\230 on top of NtQueryInformationProcess,

Haven't played around with it in a while, though it may not be OpenGL related,
it only happens when Wine is running a 3D application in OpenGL.
My guess is that something doesn't process ticks unless the mouse is moving, and
related to that the mouse can't move inside of the OpenGL window.
I dunno.
I still have that stack trace, it's about 17MB, if other people cannot duplicate
this bug, trash it.
But it's pretty easy to test and locate as to whether or not it is actually a bug.
Other OpenGL applications work fine.

Summary: CBN_SELCHANGE and WM_GETTEXT bug/"feature" in Windows
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: PC
URL: http://source.winehq.org/source/dlls/user32/combo.c#L134
7
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: minor
Priority: P4
Component: wine-user
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: megajocke(a)notsohotmail.com
When writing code for a dialog that uses a combo box of type CBS_DROPDOWN I
stumbled upon something strange in Windows XP. In the CBN_SELCHANGE notification
from the combo box the text of the edit box has not updated yet, which means
WM_GETTEXT or APIs that use it return the old value instead of the newly
selected. This does happen to CBS_SIMPLE too as it has an edit control but does
not happen to CBS_DROPDOWNLIST.
I had a look in WINE's combo box code and it looks like in WINE the edit box
text gets updated (line 1358) before the notification is sent (line 1374). So
this means that WM_GETTEXT will return the current value instead of the previous
one which it does in Windows. The problem with this that I can see is probably
more that applications written for WINE won't work correctly in Windows as it is
not a far fetch to assume that WM_GETTEXT would work in the CBN_SELCHANGE handler.
Just changing it to how it work in Windows might break something in WINE if some
dialog somewhere is using WM_GETTEXT, GetDlgItemText or GetWindowText to get the
value from a combo box with edit control. For example, I saw code in the printer
dialog that uses WM_GETTEXT. (But this doesn't matter if the combo is of
DROPDOWNLIST type which I didn't check if it was or not)
To "fix" it, all CBN_SELCHANGE references in WINE need to be checked (not that
many) and then CB_NOTIFY needs to be moved before the if block. Is it really
correct though that the combo box sends CBN_SELCHANGE even when the list box
reported LBN_SELCANCEL? Maybe it should be the first thing to do in the first if
block?
Here is a page from Microsoft on this behaviour, and it seems like it has worked
like that from the beginning, look at that stuff about Win32 :P. The article is
not entirely accurate though as WM_GETTEXT would return the newly selected value
in a CBS_DROPDOWNLIST:

Here is someone else who has discovered this "feature" in Windows:

And here someone proposes that the OP use it to get the old value, relying on
this "feature":

A utility I made to start WINE apps
Because I often don't have the K-Menu entries to start apps, I needed to craft
a shell script to use, as part of my KDE settings, which use the 'winepath'
command internally to run them. Here it is, but I'm sure there's no bug in this
one. Usage (Open with WINE):
~/redwine.sh "%f"

wine run from the git directory - still no go
As you can see, it still, similarly, doesn't work.
.41 still runs fine on this system. If someone wants me to do that split thing,
let me know the steps.

Vitaliy, who are you? I've been posting additional, valid information just as
fast as anyone there suggests how to obtain it. Your claim that my "wine compile
is invalid" is bunk. I've used both the compile of numerous versions via the
Gentoo ebuild system. And I've compiled in a standard way using the defaults in
your current git cvs tree. I've introduced no novelty into the compiles, nothing
to make them "invalid." Your criticisms - every one of them - are invalid.
There's a suggestion here that I have two versions of wine installed to compare
them. I've done that. I'm waiting for the next step. Your contrary instructions
are not helpful. You are completely out of line and out of place. Get off this
thread. Let me communicate with the real developers.
Everyone else - I'm sorry I've even responded to him. Hopefully he'll quiet
down. If not, I promise I'll just ignore him after this.

Whit Blauvelt, So far you posted lots of useless information about what you
thing might or might not be a problem. And did exactly what is NOT supported
here nor will be supported here.
Please do the following:
1. Get your configuration straight - your Wine compile is invalid. (read wikis,
howtos, ask on wine-users, whatever. This place IS NOT place to educate you how
to compile Wine!)
2. Remove any other installed versions of Wine _no exceptions_
3. Remove / rename ~/.wine directory and reinstall your application.
4. Perform the proper regression testing as described here
http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting
If you do not have any additional _BUG RELATED_ information to add, don't post
anything at all.

Call the wine binary out of your git directory, ie:
$ ~/wine-git/wine /path/to/app.exe
It makes git bisect easy and it's faster with not having to do "make install" first.

I installed the .42+ git version in /usr/local/bin and so on per its default. I
have the .41 version (the Gentoo ebuild) installed in its default /usr/bin. As
far as I can see, everything .42+ is under /usr/local, and everything .41 is
under /usr. I've kept .41 on the system because of the suggestion that there's a
way to use that git split function to diff them - but I don't know the full
syntax and sequence for that.
# /usr/local/bin/wine --version
wine-0.9.42-177-g1ad6abf
# /usr/bin/wine --version
wine-0.9.41
Off to dinner now, but I'll check back later this evening.

Okay, these are NOT stripped binaries. From your docs:
"You also need about 400 MB of available disk space for compilation.
The compiled libwine.so binary takes around 5 MB of disk space,
which can be reduced to about 1 MB by stripping ('strip wine').
Stripping is not recommended, however, as you can't submit
proper crash reports with a stripped binary."
Well, I sure didn't invoke 'strip wine'. So if your configure/make routines
didn't strip it, and I didn't, then those are not backtraces from stripped
binaries. However, if you need Wine compiled for some debug level beyond its
default, please specify that and I'll do it.

I don't know. The default is not to strip them. Something else is wrong. Like
you didn't install the new binaries in there proper places or not calling the
correct wine binary. Check that and I will have you try something in a few minutes.

something where I have to manually set some variable in the shell first before
building? If so, please specify it.

Jesse,
Please provide instructions for doing either of the things you request. I can
appreciate that if all users were developers, familiar with all the tools, it
would be easier on your end. But we're not. Backtraces I haven't done but a few
times years ago, and regression tests never in this life - despite that I'm a
UNIX sysadmin of 15 years professional experience. I'll betcha I know a lot of
stuff you don't, just like you know these things that I don't. But if you need
me to run them, you'll need to provide the recipe.

Just to be clearer to Vitaliy, yes InfoSelect is broken on a fresh installation
before ies4lin is installed to it. Please forget I ever mentioned ies4lin. I'm
satisfied (1) it's totally separate, and (2) its being attended to. We're
looking for some other bug freshly introduced to Wine in .42. Hey, it happens.
The point is now to get it back out.
I'm curious, aren't the error messages from Wine that I've attached saying
something to Wine developers? There ought to be something that's obvious in them
to you, even if it's not to me, right?

Please attach a new backtrace then with debugging symbols, or do a regression

Current git failing to run InfoSelect 1.0
Following Austin's suggestion that this might be a known 16-bit problem since
fixed in git, I've done today's git install, and gotten this failure. A
positive note: the error message list is shorter than in .42. The break is
between .41 and .42. If someone can advise on how to test for it, I do still
have .41 on the system and can compare it with this .42+ git install - but I
don't fully understand the syntax for that git split command.

Vitaliy, the has nothing to do with ies4lin - InfoSelect is not a Web-based
application, and in fact predates IE. As for the claim that it's the 16-bit bug,
it's not if that bug is fixed in the cvs as Austin implies. I just did a git
install and it fails similarly. I'll post the attachment of its failure presently.
Trying to "solve" the bug by wishing it to be a duplicate of something is not
productive. At this point I've put a lot of time into verifying the bug, because
it's important it be fixed. You are not contributing anything positive to this
process. Please leave it to others who prefer to solve problems rather than wish
them away.
