Change the configuration of your WM. Wine can't and won't do anything about this.

And the problem is?
Messages themselves don't make it a problem. Wine can (and does) complain about
lots of things, which usually don't affect anything.

Oddly, the very next app I tried was also a Delphi app,
and had what seems to be the same problem.
The user report was at
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine/msg/14c5930a2…
and I ran the demo, downloadable from
http://www.parishdata.com/churchoffice
The app installs and starts ok, but the "Web News"
popup won't go away! Clicking its 'Close' button showed the log messages
fixme:shdocvw:WebBrowser_QueryInterface

err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {4955dd33-b159-11d0-8fcf-00aa006bcc59}
could be created for context 0x1
and the app complained
An error has been detected. This error should never happen under normal
conditions....
The error is
OLE error 80004001
Extra information:
Comobj.DispCallError
Comobj.DispatchInvokeError
Olectrls.TOleControl.GetWordBoolProp (OleCtrls.pas, line 1175)
Pdswebnewsunit.TfrmWebNews.Button1Click(PDSWebNewsUnit.pas, line 92)
Controls.TControl.Click(Controls.pas, line 4296)
Clicking "OK" on the error dialog brought me right back
to where I started, with the "Web News" window inviting
me to click "Close". (Fortunately, clicking the go-away box
in the upper right corner of the Web News decoration lets
the app continue.) Native dcom doesn't help.
So that's a bit more evidence that it's really a shdocvw error.

A user reported in
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine/msg/7f162e3eb…
that this app appears to hang at the splash screen.
To reproduce, install the following two binaries:
ftp://ftp.gsn.de/pub/prg/WIN32/BDE/BDE32.EXE
ftp://ftp.gsn.de/pub/prg/WIN32/AUFTRAGSQL/winauf32sql.exe
and start the app. The apparent hang is really a z-order
problem; two dialogs pop up behind the splash screen.
To see the text, start the program with
WINEDEBUG=+text wine gsauftrag.exe
The first dialog is a question about whether to import
the example data, or something; I got past it by pressing the J key.
The second dialog is a warning about printers:
"Achtung:
I got past it by pressing the Enter key.
The app then appears to start properly, but then puts up an error
window, saying
EOleException: Unknown error
OLE-Fehler 80004001
This appears to be related to the lines
fixme:shdocvw:PersistStreamInit_InitNew (0x197ed8)
fixme:shdocvw:WebBrowser_QueryInterface
(0x197ed8)->({376bd3aa-3845-101b-84ed-08002b2ec713} 0x20b8540) interface not
supported
fixme:shdocvw:OleControl_OnAmbientPropertyChange Unknown dispID -1
fixme:shdocvw:WebBrowser_put_FullScreen (0x197ed8)->(ffffffff)
in the log.
The next thing to try is probably installing ie6 for real
and see if this goes away. Easiest way to do that is
either use ies4linux or Codeweavers Crossover. If that
makes this problem go away, I probably guessed right
when I chose shdocvw as the category.

The Studio MX installer runs very well, except
that when you ask it to install all five apps,
one of the subinstallers (flash player) doesn't
*quite* get run unattended; you have to click its
OK button to get it to run.
This is pretty minor, but hey, if we fix it,
we can be pretty proud that the install experience
for this sizable app is just like on Windows.
(I haven't installed on Windows to verify that
the problem is only under Wine yet, whoever picks
this bug up should probably check first.)

The help menu on Fireworks 3 fails; Firefox comes up, but displays the dialog
"Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, as the protocol (c) isn't
registered with any application." (more or less)
The log looks like this:
0009:Call KERNEL32.WinExec(0033e3f4 "c:\\windows\\system32\\winebrowser.exe

Annoyingly, the linux command
winebrowser "file:///C:/Program Files/Macromedia/Fireworks
3/English/Help/Contexthelp.htm"
works properly, and brings up the help file. Works in cmd, too.
So I guess it has to do with the fact that fireworks called
CreateProcess with a single string, "c:\\windows\\system32\\winebrowser.exe
file:///C:/Program Files/Macromedia/Fireworks 3/English/Help/Contexthelp.htm",
and somehow quoting or file:/// stripping getting screwed up.

Dreamweaver 3 installs fine, and starts fine
(though you have to hit Enter to get an invisible
dialog box to go away; that's the infamous z-order problem).
The "Launcher" window which has seven buttons (Site, Library, HTML Styles, etc.)
and is shown by default in the upper right
seems to be too short and/or has a title bar when it shouldn't.
The position of the icons would be right if there were no
title bar for the window; as it is, the title bar overrides
the top half of the icons.

Adobe Premier installs ok except for one crash dialog,
and it seems to start ok, too, except for a "cannot find ui font"
dialog. In both cases you can click ok and ignore.
(The ui font problem is related to the log message
warn:font:AddFontFileToList Unable to load font file

and I heard a rumor that it goes away if you have the latest
libfontconfig.)
When you load the sample project ZTOUR.PPJ and click Play, though,
the video playback window only flickers light and dark,
it doesn't play back.

Wine can't cause system crashes.
If Wine is triggering a system crash, it's probably a bug
in your video drivers. Please file a bug with
your linux distribution, perhaps they can help you
track it down. Be sure to tell them what graphics
card you have, which video drivers you're using,
and whether glxgears also causes the crash.

Because this is an windows SDL app, it redirects stdout and stderr to a file.
Please run this game and search the game directory for a new stdout.txt or
stderr.txt file that should have the crash dump. We may need to pass an SDL

For msvcrt, yes, I'm using a (as in one, singular) native dll. See bug #4437.
As for dinput.dll, I did some more testing to make sure and it seems quite weird
(with an absolutely clean wine config and fake windows).
For wine 0.9.41 and current git, I can set dinput=builtin without problems
(though then I get the invisible cursor). For a wine before the commit I have
pointed, I need to set dinput to native (it doesn't run if set to builtin), BUT
also make sure I have no dinput.dll anywhere in my fake windows and the game
directory. I'm not sure what is happening here, but it seems as if I need to
make the game think there is no dinput.dll at all.

Hi,
I don't see, why this issue is per se invalid?
I'm using in kernel (2.6.20) radeon module for my Xorg 7.2 system and of course
I'm aware of the fact that Wine "by definition" cannot update my drivers. But my
drivers where fine upto this point and anyway I don't see them being the trouble
as I can run wine from other users than my own, when logged in X with my own.
And other users is NOT root as you understood it was.
When logged in X as user A, A cannot run winecfg but users B to whatever can (if
I start a shell for these other users by doing "su B", etc
Thanx for any more comments and helpful advices.
Cheers
Sebastian

Don't run Wine as root. And fix your video drivers.
Wine by definition can not do this.

Summary: wine freezes system completely
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.41.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: blocker
Priority: P2
Component: wine-winelib
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: sebastian.kannengiesser(a)gmx.de
Hi all,
winecfg seems to freeze my system completely when I run it from the user the
actual Xsession belongs to. As I'm not only not able to use wine since 0.9.40,
actually 0.9.37 was the last one, I can confirm working here, I can not use the
system at all after calling winecfg. I searched bugzilla for this and found
another bug: 7285, which seems to handle a possible related topic, though it is
an issue about an older version there and the user does not have lockups on his
system. If anything is known about what could be the reason for this behaviour,
please tell me and let me know, which part of my configuration you would like to
know about. Thanx in advance.
Cheers
Sebastian

Changed version to CVS.
I just wasn't sure, which version I should choose, if the bug is present in most
recent wine but it is also known when the problem started... thanks for clearing
that up.
And yes, the bug is present in the Demo (of course, that's why I linked it
here). I also tested 0.9.41 and it's present there, too (though thats not
surprising since I already tested newest git). Also, msvcrt and dinput apply
both to the demo and complete game.
Also, the cursor is completely visible until the very first dialog (start game
etc...); just (try to) start a game and you'll know what I mean =)

Same problem here. I purchased Half Life 2 + Episode 1 using Steam. The status
stays at preload complete and I cannot lauch the games. Under Windows my account
works.
I found out that at the first installation it works. After some tests I noticed
that deleting the reg key HKCU/software/valve it works but I have to do it all
the time.
I also tried to move my installation and the reg keys from the windows install
but that did not help. But I noticed that the wine regedit was not able to
import the REG_BINARY key HKCU/software/valve/steam/users/<uid>/licenses. I then
found out that exporting a REG_BINARY from wine and reimporting it also caused
trouble. It seems that the REG_BINARYs with 00 00 00 in it are causing trouble
in wine.
For example importing a REG_BINARY with value
00 00 00 40 af 50 47 36
will cause the error
regedit: ERROR converting CSV hex stream. Invalid sequence at
',00,00,00,40,af,50,47,36'
while 99 99 99 99 works fine.
That could explain why only certain steam accounts make trouble. Can the other
ones please look whether they have a string similar to 00 00 00 in the license
string found in HKCU/software/valve/steam/users/<uid>/licenses

Hi!
There is a regression in wine since 0.9.28 and current git (haven't tried
releases since 0.9.39, but I assume it's still there since it's in the current
git). Mouse cursor in Weird Worlds is missing in everywhere else except (most
part of) dialog windows. This makes the game unplayable.
I did a git-bisect and found the following commit breaking this game:
715d0e84097cb2dc07369c4e1cec8cf8a41e9035 is first bad commit
commit 715d0e84097cb2dc07369c4e1cec8cf8a41e9035

This is why I'm cc'ing Ulrich Czekalla =)
Unfortunately I have no programming skills so I have no idea if it would be easy
to fix this without breaking others - and also, I have no idea if also other
applications and/or games are affected by this bug.
There is a free demo of Weird Worlds:
http://www.shrapnelgames.com/digital_eel/weird_worlds/6.htm
OR, a direct link:
http://download.shrapnelgames.com/downloads/weirdworlds_demo.exe
Also, please note you'll need native msvcrt and dinput to run the demo.

>From ld manual I see that --enable-new-dtags option is relatively safe.
Unfortunately I don't understand the meaning of hash-style - but I observe its
effect - libraries get smaller and fewer relocations (and time) are required for
loading them.
And the last not the least question: Is it possible to put all globally used gcc

I doubt -Bsymbolic will become the default, there are too many things that
depend on the standard ELF behavior. You may also note that things that can be
linked with -Bsymbolic in Wine already are, so you won't gain anything by
changing the flags.

Wine depends on specific ELF semantics probably more than other apps. That
doesn't mean that using linker flags that you don't understand and that change
the linker semantics is a good idea.

But then the installer crashes while copying d3dx9_30.dll!
It's the only thing I can say...

This happened to me several times now, while playing spider-solitaire ;-)
When you finish a stack (king to ace) using alsa sometimes
(seems to be random, but I have a savegame where it happens to me everytime)
the game just exits (crashes). I don't know if this has something to do with
it, but before I used Maartens dsoundtest, this seemed to happen very less
frequently.
When using OSS, it works but becomes extremely slow while playing the animation
(and sound), giving a
fixme:wave:wodPlayer_Reset shouldn't have headers left.
With sound disabled the animation is a lot faster than with OSS or ALSA (the
times it works).

That is in no way what you told me to do. But yeah, pretty much. The only
difference is that I used a pre-installed version of WoW, I didn't use WoW to

Also, why would I remove the ~/.wine directory? Is it broken? Is something
wrong with it? I have tried removing it, but as I suspected it had no affect on
what is clearly a regression bug.

Direct link:
http://www.troopmaster.com/download/Demo_TM2005.exe
Forgot to say last time, the program required winetricks vcrun6 to run (missing
mfc42).
With the info provided in comment 7, the program hangs. Steps to reproduce:
1) Install.
2) Install vcrun6 from winetricks. ( $ sh winetricks vcrun6 )
3) Launch program, input license info (help, license details).
4) Setup dotnet (File, Troopmaster Dotnet)
5) Close program, and relaunch.
It should then attempt to download the database from the dotnet service. Here,
the program hangs. The program will not respond to mouse/keyboard movements.
I'll try it in a virtual desktop/unmanaged mode in a bit and see if that helps.
There is _no_ terminal output when launching the program or during it's hang.
I'm guessing the +relay log is the first needed?
Anyway, bug is confirmed in wine 0.9.41

You haven't shown anything. No crash report, nothing pointing out a memory leak.

Tell me, can you read?
"I did this, logged in as non-root, and now the framerate is unbearably low, as I
said happens in dX mode."
Also, my other user account is "privileged", and can therefore also do
*everything*, the only differences I see are root being allowed to use pids
under 1024 and root being allowed to edit system files.
Would you stop patronising me, please?
also:
" but running normal programs as root
is one the main reasons that spyware proliferates on windows machines."
I'm not on a windows machine, and when I was I had no problems with spyware.
Don't talk to me about security, I've been a systems administrator for 5 years
and never once had any trouble with malware of any kind. I've not even had a
successful hack attempt go past me.
I -have- run it as a non-root user, and a different problem appears. I don't
see why, though, as I am using the same home directory for the root user, so the
same ~/.wine files are being used.
All I can see is a memory leak, causing a bigger problem for the root account,
possibly because it's allowing wine more RAM?
I think your attitudes are rather poor about this. I am a user submitting a
-bug-, who cares what exactly is wrong, this is wine's fault and it did work
before the latest wine version and I'm not an idiot!

You really should try to upgrade first to 0.9.41. If this doesn't help you may want to try old WINE version which has worked for you. Even if you don't remember exact version try to remember when you have used it and it worked for you. For example 0.9.30 was released at 2007-01-25, 0.9.32 at 2007-03-02 and so on. You can download both new and old WINE versions from http://www.winehq.org website.

version and (I think) it doesn't work because of this. I think that this one
can be easily fixed. I just need to find some DXDiag documentation to check
return format and correct values for dxVersion. I suppose that someone else can
also give that a try.

You should not run wine as root because it is exposing your entire system to
danger. Root can do *anything*. Therefore, any crash in any program or library
has the potential of wrecking havoc on your system. Sure it may be easier not
having to sudo for tasks every now and then, but running normal programs as root
is one the main reasons that spyware proliferates on windows machines.
If you will run this in a clean .wine directory, as a *user*, not root, and
still get the crash, then try running a regression test to see what patch broke
it between wine 0.9.40 and wine 0.9.41.

And you can't explain why you don't just run non-root. We have told you root is
dangerous. There is simply no reason to run a user-space app as root. One bug,
doesn't even have to be in wine--it can be in any library--can take down an
entire system.
This isn't a help forum. It's for reporting bugs, and we are asking you to do it
right, otherwise we can't solve your crash.

Nobody has explained -why- I can't run wine as root, nobody has tried to help me
and for the last time, it IS a regression because it DID run FINE before the
latest wine version! What do I need to test, my memory?!
I'm getting a little bit peeved about the responses here! It seems you'd rather
make sure your "bug filing system" works properly than the actual application!

Yes file a new bug report, if it is a clear regression running as non-root. We
won't have to see this comment garbage in a new report, you can do proper
regression testing, and we can use a clear backtrace too if it's a crash.

System Shock 2 log - alsa emulation
Ok, I switched sound driver to alsa, turned on the emulation and that helped.
I'm able to get into the next level, everything seems to work faster a little
bit. In spite of all game is unplayable because of extremally low performance.
I have Radeon 9250 graphic card with installed drivers and working hardware
acceleration. (glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes)

Summary: unable to read characters to navigate "wine
configuration" and "wine file"
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-x11driver
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: twilson(a)lbcc.edu
I updated my Fedora 7 to the latest WINE. I am no longer presented with alpha
numeric characters when I attempt to access the updated program, instead I see a
lowercase, cursive “go” or “goo” or simply “g” everywhere. I've removed wine
and reinstalled twice, to no avail. (“everywhere” being wherever an alphabetic
character would normally appear in the “wine configuration” or the “wine file”
programs.) I've taken a snapshot of the desktop when wine is open in wine
itself. I have managed to run an application (literally by blind luck) and it
was not affected. It is simply a matter of not being able to navigate. Here is
the snapshot: http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/8717/screenshotqn5.png
What look like little indentations in the snapshot, appear to be little cursive
g or go on the desktop.

Ok, fine it's invalid, I don't care. Could we just forget the fact I ran it as
root for a second (because I can't see any viable reason not to, so you could
explain that to me) and focus on the fact that it WORKED up until version 0.9.41.
Also, it is still "not working" as a non-root user, just in a different way.
What, should I file a new bug about this? That's a waste of time if you ask me...
The low fps as a non-root user would be nice to solve, if you feel that solving
the root user crash problem is beyond you.

Summary: Wine (server) crashes at startup when it's compiled with
custom LDFLAGS
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: blocker
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: t.artem(a)mailcity.com
Recently I began compiling my applications with new LDFLAGS which improve
applications' start-up time and size. Unfortunately these LDFLAGS make wine
segfault at running any application (even with built-ins like notepad or regedit).
In order to use these LDFLAGS you have to have installed recent binutils (Linux
distro Fedora 7 is sufficient) - I have binutils 2.17.50.0.12.
So, these are the LD flags to blame:
export LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -s -Wl,--hash-style=gnu -Wl,-Bsymbolic
-Wl,-Bsymbolic-functions -Wl,--enable-new-dtags"
"-Wl,-O1" and "-s" options seem to be safe, I suppose wine doesn't like some of
"-Wl,-Bsymbolic -Wl,-Bsymbolic-functions -Wl,--enable-new-dtags" options.
That would be great if Wine build system put all CFLAGS and LDFLAGS in one file
(instead of putting them into each Makefile), so that I could re-link all the
wine tree by changing the only string in a build file.

I did this, logged in as non-root, and now the framerate is unbearably low, as I
said happens in dX mode.
Using fglrx drivers (latest version), with an ATi radeon x600 card, 256MB
onboard video memory, of which 64 seems to be addressed by wine...
If this is caused as you say by multi-threaded ogl, why did it work with wine
0.9.40 perfectly happily? I didn't call it a regression because I like the
word, you know.

"Unless of course you running it as root."
Which I am, because it's more convenient for me to log in to GDM as root.
Should I try logging in as a different user and running it, then?
