Dan, try it in wine 0.9.40. Works fine for me there (no space/gdi errors). There
is an error when installing about qaphlpr.dll, but the program still runs fine.

Its your decision, as current worker of msi, to set the version. But I don't see
why cvs is wrong. My point is, as a user, there where quite some commits related
to msi since the wine 9.40 release, so I cant really judge whats better .9.40 or
cvs.

My drive is set up as E:\
The mount is done via dbus/hal automount. I cd to /mnt/cdrom and run wine
setup.exe from there. This is not an iso, its the original dvd.
I will bisect the problem as soon as I can, don't throw this regression testing
url twice at me, I already know and did many regression tests up to day (which
should be clear, looking at my already posted bugs) ;)
Sorry, there is and there was no field in the wine bugzilla, stating git as
version. Maybe this will be added when the bugzilla update appears? But as long
as the update isn't there; cvs means git. ;)

Summary: Regression in SCIM input
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: ncliang(a)gmail.com
When finishing input to the preedit area in SCIM, I press <ctrl>+<space> or
<enter> to send my changes in the preedit area to the edit area that should
receive the input. This used to work in wine-0.9.20, but is broken in current
git. The text in the preedit area is not sent to the target edit area.
Regression testing is hard since this commit:
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-cvs/2006-October/026680.html
caused wine to hang when run with SCIM. The hang was fixed here:
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-cvs/2007-April/031832.html
but input was never the same again.....

Summary
*******
I compiled Wine 0.9.40 both on 32 and on 64 bit Debian etch.
The error is still present on Wine 0.9.40,
probably both on 32 bit and 64 bit host systems.
But on 64 bit systems an X protocol error prohibits
full installation, so it does not behave exactly the same.
The details:
************
Note: all files can be found on http://www.clausfischer.com/winebug/
0. Prepare Wine packages for Debian.
I created my own patch from the Debian 0.9.34 packages.
See wine_0.9.40-1.diff
- unpacked wine-0.9.40.tar.bz2
- cd wine-0.9.40
- pach -p1 <../wine_0.9.40-1.diff
- chmod +x debian/rules
- comment out the line with 'arts' in debian/rules
- dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot
- install all packages
1. Configure Wine
Pretty regular configuration.
Changed OSS to Alsa sound driver (but don't know if it works).
2. Change system.reg (set default user and company name).
3. Install Excel 2003 and Word 2003:
wine 'd:\setup.exe'
See the screenshots 1-4.
Notably, excel does not show the required storage (see screen3).
4. When clicking 'Finish', wine seems to hang in the 'tee' command.
After clicking Ctrl-C, wine reports: Wine exited with a successful status.
5. wine 'c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\EXCEL.EXE'
Excel prompts for my username and initials.
I enter 'cfischer', empty string.
No screenshot, unfortunately.
>From here on, the versions on 32 and on 64 bit behave differently:
6a. On 32-bit, Excel is satisfied.
I can start Excel regularly, and get the error that I originally
reported, i.e. the 'Error Accessing File'.
6b. On 64-bit, Excel asks whether I accept the license.
I accept, but Excel then seems to crash.
Apparently wine produces a bad X lib call.
Wine gives an error log: wine.log.excel_first_start_crash
7b. Same command again.
Wine reports the 'Error Accessing File'.
Afterwards reports "excel was not installed for this user"
then crashes again. Probably a consequence of the first crash.
Error log: wine.log.excel.second-crash

I use SCIM to input Chinese. It uses on-the-spot input style which requires the

insertion point is not changed when I press the left or right arrows to move
back and forth within the preedit area.

Summary: openCanvas 1.1-b72 does not start properly
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.39.
Platform: All
URL: http://wistinga.online.fr/opencanvas/
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-programs
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: fry.kun(a)gmail.com
openCanvas 1.1 b72 is the last freeware version of openCanvas - it's available
from http://wistinga.online.fr/opencanvas/
When running the program (no explicit install needed, by the way), it shows a
cryptic error message, while wine displays the following in the terminal:
fixme:wintab32:X11DRV_WTInfoA Return proper size
*** stack smashing detected ***: oC11b72.EXE terminated
Contrary to this log message, the application does not terminate but shows its
cryptic error again - and wine shows the above lines again.
Additionally, there are a bunch of identical messages in terminal:
fixme:bitblt:X11DRV_ClientSideDIBCopy potential optimization: pixel format
conversion
I'm not certain these relate to the bug
Expected behavior is that openCanvas application won't crash

Please run the installer in english and attach the logs again (against the
english install). I can't read the logs otherwise. If you're using git, please
say so. If you're not, please change the version to match the release you're
running. Also, please use +msi,+msidb,+file. On another note, we still need
you to do the regression test.

Component: wine-kernel

I saw the documentation of FreeLibraryAndExitThread in the MSDN and says:
"The FreeLibraryAndExitThread function allows threads that are executing within
a DLL to safely free the DLL in which they are executing and terminate
themselves. If they were to call FreeLibrary and ExitThread separately, a race
condition would exist. The library could be unloaded before ExitThread is
called."
And the implementation of Wine does exactly:
FreeLibrary(hMod);
ExitThread(dwExitCode);
There is no difference to call both functions instead of this.

I successfully installed Jane's USAF with wine 0.9.36, but failed to run it.
After installing wine 0.9.40 from winehq, I could run it, but it is extremely slow.
This is a Win98 game, so it should be able to run on my IBM T23 hardware
(Pentium III, 1 Ghz).
But the game actually runs; it doesn't work on Windows XP :-)

Trying to get Dreamweaver CS3 running under Ubuntu 7.04 with wine 0.9.33
installed from the package repository.
I get a pop-up Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error message box with the following
text: "R6034 An Application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library

And in the console window I have this error message:

tried the fixes outlined in bug# 7409 to no avail. I'm still getting the above

Please apologize to me about my bad behavior yesterday. Please do not ignore me,
because sometimes everyone needs help.
I don't know what's wrong with my system
- maybe it's my fault that the game behaves so bad (configuration?)
- maybe it's a distribution specific software bug (Fedora kernel ?)
- maybe it's a program in the background (KDE, skype,... ?)
- maybe it's a driver failure (Intel chipset, ATi graphics,... ?)
- i don't think it's hardware defect, because this computer is brand new
(CPU/GPU overheat, defect video/system RAM,... ?)
Please help me, I have never played this game longer than 30 minutes (WinXP is
an exception...).
(Sorry for the bad english, automatic translation...)

When installing MS Office97, I get the error message "Accwiz.dll was
unable to register itself in the system registry". This made the installer say
it had failed. Actually Running the installed programs seems to be OK though.
System: fresh ~/.wine, wine-0.9.40, no winetools, ubuntu feisty. I'm using an
image of the Office97 CD, which already contains SP1.
(Setting severity to minor, because this doesn't seem to have any obvious
ill-effects - as far as I can tell. Filing under wine-misc, because bugzilla
tells me that "if I don't know which component, I should just guess".)

On Windows, I can do an automated Photoshop CS 2 install as follows:
msiexec /qb /i "path\to\Adobe Photoshop CS2.msi"
With Wine, it only works if the current working directory is the directory
containing the .msi file.
If I run msiexec from some other directory, I get a dialog box that says
"error." After I click ok, I get:
err:msi:ITERATE_Actions Execution halted, action L"CA_CheckPersErr" returned 1627
For the automated install to work, Abcpy.ini needs to have a serial number for
the line that starts with SERIALNUMBER= in the [OEM Install] section.

Component: wine-msvcrt

some applications, including php.exe/php-cgi.exe rely on persistence of the
environment variable values returned by getenv(). In other words, if I set
str=getenv("OS"), it is expected to remain pointing to "Windows_NT" if I
change any other variables in the environment, add new one or remove any
other, except "OS" itself.
With WINE something happens to _environ and it reallocates _all_ the variables
if only one is changed with _putenv.
Unfortunately, I could not replicate it in a simple application I created, but
in the real one (php-cgi.exe) I added some print statements and got an
evidence that all the variables are re-allocated at once.
Code:
char **sstr, *str;
sstr = _environ;
while (1) {
str = *sstr;
if (!str) break;
printf("%p %s\n", str, str);
sstr++;
}
_sapi_cgibin_putenv("ORIG_SCRIPT_FILENAME", orig_script_filename); // it calls
_putenv("ORIG_SCRIPT_FILENAME=blah blah blah")
sstr = _environ;
while (1) {
str = *sstr;
if (!str) break;
printf("%p %s\n", str, str);
sstr++;

Jesse, please tell me what's wrong with my system! I really don't know.
I bought a computer, wiped the hard disk, installed Fedora, installed all
drivers, multimedia software DIRECTLY from the repositories (fedora, updates,
livna) and updated all packages to the latest version.
Then I installed CrossOver 6.1 and WoW, Diablo II, WarCraft III and Starcraft
(every game with expansion pack) in separate bottles.
Warcraft III and Starcraft are running wonderful (fast and without bugs). WoW
and Diablo II are only crashing! MS Office 2003 runs without problems in
CrossOver, too.
Unreal Tournament 2004 (native linux game) runs like Warcraft III or Starcraft.
I really don't know what's wrong with my system!

The forcing is done by one function (confirm?) so it might be possible to

wine to use one core and save some resources.

The main idea in my issue is make TreeView/Listview components that show
tooltips more user-friendly. When hint window overlaps treenode or listview

tooltip.
If it's not possible without changing X11, I can live with this :-)

Josef, please don't confuse this report. I'm doubtful your problem is the same
especially since you reported D2 crashing the same way? You probably have bugged
drivers or configuration, or worse.

Are you still working on a patch for this bug? I've got this bug in OpenGL mode!!!
The screen freezes and the sound stops playing. I can alt-tab out of the game
and kill it with a task manager. Before WoW crashes it gets unplayable slow
(about one second).
World of Warcraft does NOT generate an error message.
My system:
- Fedora 7 i686 on an Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 (Centrino)
- 1 GB DDR2 RAM
- ATi Mobility Radeon X1300, 256 MB (64MB built in, 192MB HyperMem)
- kernel version doesn't matter, i had this bug on all kernels since the
standard FC6 kernel (2.6.18)
- wine version doesn't matter, i had this bug on all versions since 0.9.32 (CVS)
- fglrx driver from rpm.livna.org version 8.38.7 (xorg server downgrade workaround)
Graphics settings in the game:
- everything set to minimum
- resolution: 1280x800
- automatic detail level on
- pixel shaders on (first sub-option on)
- vertex shaders on (sub-option on)
- weather shaders on
- vsync off
- triple buffering off
- character shadows off

It works for child windows, but not for top-level windows because we have no way
of knowing which window the click should go to. This would need to be supported
at the X11 level.

I created popup window with code below:
memset(WindowClass, 0, SizeOf(WindowClass));
WindowClass.lpfnWndProc = AWndProc_def;
WindowClass.lpszClassName = L"HINTWINDOW";
WindowClass.style = 0x2080B;
RegisterClassW(WindowClass);
FHintControl = CreateWindowEx(0x80, WindowClass.lpszClassName, NULL,
0x80800000, 150, 270, 550, 150, 0, 0, HInstance, NULL);
ShowWindow(FHintControl, SW_NORMAL);
When AWndProc_def() gets WM_NCHITTEST it returns HTTRANSPARENT.
it also handles WM_PAINT and runs PatBlt to make it white:
switch (msg) {
case WM_PAINT:
DC = BeginPaint(HWnd, &paint);
PatBlt(DC, paint.rcPaint.Left, paint.rcPaint.Top, paint.rcPaint.Right-
paint.rcPaint.Left, paint.rcPaint.Bottom - paint.rcPaint.Top, WHITENESS);
EndPage(DC);
return 0;
case WM_NCHITTEST: // in my real code I check for X coordinate to leave a
stripe non-transparent, just to make it possible to activate the popup by
clicking on it
return HTTRANSPARENT;
}
return CallWindowProcW(DefWindowProcW, HWnd, Msg, WParam, LParam);
You also need a main window with some controls on it.
Then try to overlap main window with this popup and click to the controls on
the main window and try to get them focused.
Under Windows it works.
It's not a very important problem, just a matter of fact that Wine behaves
differently and user clicks are not propagated through tooltip windows.

Vitaliy, as I told within the comment, this hint is not related to the dark
texture problem, but I think with the new wine version, this problem doesn't
occur as often as with the older wine versions; and with version 0.9.40 the
problem seems to be only preformance related, at least my Lara doesn't turn dark
anymore but runs slower.

There is no need to provide the same code snippet again and again, this bug
is full of such examples, and Wine has a couple of nice test cases as well.
The problem is not whether the control is unicode or not, IsWindowUnicode()
works correctly in Wine. The problem is (as explained already numerous times
in this bug) that an app sets a windows proc (which expects ANSI input strings)
as a Unicode window proc handler. That causes unexpected string conversions
leading to the observed behavior. Apparently Windows detects such a case for
internal window procs and uses not provided (broken) ANSI window proc, but
its Unicode counterpart.

>Your understanding is not really correct. There are tests in Wine that show
>that Wine behaves correctly in treating ANSI/Unicode window procs. It appears
>that Windows has an extra hack, probably to make broken code like in library
>you are using work.
no, I'm not saying that Windows is good and Wine is broken.
I'm far from this.
>From the advertized policy, Wine stands to have bug-for-bug compatibility with
Windows.
Regarding if this "bug" or not, my thoughts are below. You can make decision
if that's a bug in Windows or not, not me. Please just check with code I
provided. Basicly it can be viewed as follows:
A combobox constrol is created.
Some "stupid" calls are performed on it.
After all we ask - hey, are you unicode? It reports YES. We may also ask, is
your editor unicode? It confirms too. Then we call UNICODE function
SetWindowTextW() providing UNICODE string L"test" and our control treats it as
ANSI. Isn't it a bug?
ComboHandle = CreateWindowExW(0, L"COMBOBOX", 0, 0x44210242, 55, 30, 190,
21, ParentWnd, 0, HInstance, 0);
ShowWindow(ComboHandle, SW_NORMAL);
// stupid calls begin:
EditHandle = GetWindow(ComboHandle, GW_CHILD);
DefEditProc = GetWindowLongA(EditHandle, GWL_WNDPROC);
SetWindowLongA(EditHandle, GWL_WNDPROC, DefEditProc);
// stupid calls end.
SetWindowLongW(EditHandle, GWL_WNDPROC, GetWindowLongA(EditHandle,
GWL_WNDPROC)); // this call is a fixup to trigger EditHandle into unicode and
IsWindowUnicode(ComboHandle); // <- returns TRUE
IsWindowUnicode(EditHandle); // <- returns TRUE
SetWindowTextW(ComboHandle, L"Any Text"); // prints only "A"
SetWindowTextW(ComboHandle, (wchar_t*)"Any Text"); // prints "Any Text"

Running on updated Mandriva 2007.1 with binary Wine 0.9.40 (Wine build) changes
things radically (but all is not rosy):
- I can now perfectly navigate drives and folders
- However I can't run Install anymore, it crashes when checking for installed apps
- when running Excel from the CDROM (Office 97 allowed running from CD) I get
missing Tahoma font (not a problem) and missing or damaged stdole32.tlb - which
is crucial for some of my documents...

Workaround:
I did not do much testing but schedtool might just do the thing.
schedtool was in schedutils package in my distribution.
Forcing wine to run only on CPU1 (2nd core):
schedtool -a 0x2 -e wine C:\\GAMES\\REDALERT\\RA95.EXE
Red Alert did not crash instantly when I played around with the menu as it does
without forcing.

Update with Wine 0.9.40:
I have managed to compile a Wine 0.9.40 with some part of the Debian patches
(they don't affect primary behaviour) but have not yet installed it completely.
It looks much better.
The previous error at program start is gone.
However, part of the splash screen remains on the screen when starting Excel.
Excel now gives an error message saying 'VBA initialization error'.
The code is 1004, which according to Microsoft Q224315 means
that the oleaut dll is an old version.
However, that's probably due to my mixed ~/.wine file structure.
I haven't reached Ove Kaaven last week so I couldn't complete the
packaging process on etch/amd64. Doing a fresh install of that package
and re-creating ~/.wine might fix the bug altogether.
I'll post news as I have it.

Your understanding is not really correct. There are tests in Wine that show
that Wine behaves correctly in treating ANSI/Unicode window procs. It appears
that Windows has an extra hack, probably to make broken code like in library
you are using work.

You can change your video mode by using 'xrandr' and run wine in windowed mode
so you can have a fake fullscreen.
Works fine with Red Alert.

Builtin pdh has the required functionality now. To verify
correctness you can load native pdh and see if that makes
any problem go away:
$ wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
$ sh winetricks pdh
Watch out Dan, pitchfork from behind!

in my case the code is
ComboHandle = CreateWindowExW(0, L"COMBOBOX", 0, 0x44210242, 55, 30, 190,
21, ParentWnd, 0, HInstance, 0);
ShowWindow(ComboHandle, SW_NORMAL);
// 3rd party library begins:
EditHandle = GetWindow(ComboHandle, GW_CHILD);
DefEditProc = GetWindowLongA(EditHandle, GWL_WNDPROC);
SetWindowLongA(EditHandle, GWL_WNDPROC, DefEditProc);
// 3rd party library end.
SetWindowLongW(EditHandle, GWL_WNDPROC, GetWindowLong(EditHandle,
GWL_WNDPROC)); // this call is a fixup to trigger EditHandle into unicode and
...
SetWindowTextW(ComboHandle, L"Any Text"); // will display only "A"
It works fine under Windows. Indeed, SetWindowLongA() turns handler to non-
unicode WNDPROC and next call to SetWindowLongW() returns it back to unicode.
Windows recognizes it per following:
Even if you call SetWindowLongA() and provide NULL WndProc or WndProc pointing
to USER32 class handler, it will become/stay UNICODE
If you call SetWindowLongA() and provide custom WndProc, it will become ANSI
If you call SetWindowLongW() and provide any WndProc it will become UNICODE
Under Wine it looks pretty similar and according to IsWindowUnicode() HANDLE
becomes first non-uncode then returns back to unicode mode, but it stops
processing SetWindowTextW() as unicode and expects ANSI string passed to this
function. Definitely it's a bug in Wine :-)

It's a user's responsibility to set locale environment to a desired value.
As such this is an invalid bug.

thank very much.
I think the wine internal locale and Lang parameters can be set using wine
config tools or set as environment .
I should state this as feature request rather bugs.

Yes, even with dll override for comctl set to "native" the bug still occurs. I
also tried a few other that seemed video/gui/ddraw related.

> SetWindowLongW(EditHandle, GWL_WNDPROC, GetWindowLong(EditHandle,
> GWL_WNDPROC));
The bug is in the above line of code, GetWindowLong(EditHandle, GWL_WNDPROC)
should be GetWindowLongW(EditHandle, GWL_WNDPROC). Yes, this somehow works
under Windows, we have a bug report for this already. What is more important
we already have a test case for this "functionality".
Marking as duplicate.

Wine sets its internal locale based on the locale settings in the underlying
system. So, if your locale is not set to chinese this bug is invalid.
Try for intance running your app using command line below:
LANG=zh_CN wine program.exe

Yes, a test case would be nice, especially since Wine already is supposed to
handle HTTRANSPARENT properly (dlls/user32/winpos.c,WINPOS_WindowFromPoint).

The installer call user32/LoadStringA and get "PSCRIPT5.DLL" from the resource.
I expect, that the Drive use some sort of self-made basename() and crash,
because no backslash was found:
EnumPrinterDrivers on windows return the Full Path for the Files and
in wine, we return only the Filename.
I'm working on a fix.
The second crash, that Louis mentioned was fixed yesterday:
SetupCloseInfFile(INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE);
