If you create a directory and put files into it both with and without
extension, you can filter by those with no extension with 'dir *.' - Under
windows it works fine, under wine it doesnt - it shows all files. (I debugged
through as far as findfirst/findnext, then raised the bug to reference it as I
have more than enough cmd.exe development work on my plate at the moment)
Similarly there are other pattern matching problems, and I havent looked to
see if these are cause by findfirst/findnext (I am guessing they are), but
I'll list them here for reference for when this bug is debugged - In
windows, 'dir ???' lists all entries up to 3 characters in length which do not
have a '.' in them. In wine if shows entries of exactly 3 entries and even
includes ones with a . (eg. 'a.a')

I haven't yet done the regression test, but I have confirmed that this is
related to X11 mouse accelleration settings. I guessed this because I have
multiple pointing devices (mouse and trackpoint) and have my cursor settings set
fairly extreme.
It appears to get worse as the ratio Accel/Threshold increases. I hope to test
the diffs between 0.9.27 and 0.9.28 this weekend.

Retested with a clean .wine and clean install of Steam under version 0.9.39:
Looks like something's now broken that the Steam installer needs, because it
crashes out towards the end of the install. Fortunately, it get far enough and
installs enough that you can still launch Steam and have it patch itself to the
newest version.
Unfortunately, my tests show the same graphical glitches when compiled under
64-bit Kubuntu vs. the perfect-looking 32-bit Kubuntu compile.
I have to believe its a difference in some supporting library, if other 64-bit
distros aren't showing this problem (or am I begging the question of what the
other 64-bit distros show?). So, I'll keep testing with Gutsy as it progresses.

On Windows, trailing dots are ignored: if you create a file named "file." it
succeeds but the actual file name is "file" (tested on both Windows 98/FAT32
and Windows XP/NTFS). Wine's NTDLL goes to great lengths to do the same thing.
Even the Linux kernel FAT32 driver does the same thing, and I suspect so does
the NTFS driver.
Please explain what you are really trying to do: a "*." mask seems pointless
since it looks for files that can't exist.

Created an attachment (id=6754)
--> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=6754&action=view)
backtraces of all threads (bt all) after "Register" is pressed in Xfire.
Some suspections from the log. One thread's
(from nspr4.dll / Gecko?) backtrace starts
with WS_select(). Well, my DSL line is bad.
But more probably that comes from Gecko IPC.
And the code of next thread (0031) seems to
be in 16-bit mode. Also related to Gecko?

Tested with Wine-0.9.39. To ease debugging
I enabled "Emulate virtual desktop" via winecfg.
During install process I chose to download
Gecko engine. If I click "Check Username
Availability" then, nothing happens but the
only line in the output:
002d:fixme:mshtml:HTMLDocument_get_Script (0x1e69fe0)->(0x33e400)
If then I click "Register", following is printed:
002d:fixme:mshtml:HTMLDocument_get_Script (0x1e69fe0)->(0x33e3a0)
002d:fixme:mshtml:HTMLDocument_get_Script (0x1e69fe0)->(0x33e3a0)
002d:fixme:mshtml:HTMLDocument_get_Script (0x1e69fe0)->(0x33e3a0)
Both buttons get disabled (grayed out) after
this and then nothing happens again. At least
for a 30 minutes. Attaching backtraces.

The page fault seems to be in a DLL custom action, specifically the DLL ends up
in the command "winedevice GEARAspiWDM" being called which calls LoadLibrary as
follows (sorry for pasting this but it is so short):
000f:Call KERNEL32.LoadLibraryW(0012e198 L"System32\\Drivers\\GEARAspiWDM.sys")
ret=7ee76721
000f:Call PE DLL (proc=0x354000,module=0x350000
L"GEARAspiWDM.sys",reason=PROCESS_ATTACH,res=(nil))
000f:Call KERNEL32.__wine_emulate_instruction(7ecd44a0,7ecd41d4) ret=7ee035e2
000f:Ret KERNEL32.__wine_emulate_instruction() retval=00000001 ret=7ee035e2
000f:Call KERNEL32.UnhandledExceptionFilter(7ecd4060) ret=7bc30a03
wine: Unhandled page fault on write access to 0x00350038 at address 0x354010
(thread 000f), starting debugger...
But on my machine, at least trying the installer twice on a plain wine install,
it still seems to finish and get me to a "Congrats..." everything installed screen.

In case this is useful, I had a repeatable crash on ubuntu 7.04 with wine 0.9.38
when going to battle.net. Was able to fix the problem entirely by installing MS
core TTF fonts.
On most of my machines I'm used to rsyncing over microsoft fonts and doing
ttmkfdir. On ubuntu (long time user of freebsd and occasional debian here,
recently put ubuntu on the laptop), I was pleased to see apt-get install
msttcorefonts; fc-cache -fv did the work for me.

Some googling around turned up a couple pages like this one:
http://www.ac3.edu.au/SGI_Developer/books/XLib_PG/sgi_html/ch11.html
that says XNFontSet is required when creating an input context.
But the Xlib programming manual:
http://tucupi.cptec.inpe.br/sx4/sx4man2/g1ae02e/chap13.html
states that if XNFontSet is unspecified, the default is determined by the input
method.
I experimented a bit and tried calling XCreateIC without the XNFontSet variable
and it did not seem to make a difference on my system. Maybe it is ok to just
remove the call entirely?

I didn't try that. I apt-get installed necessary packages to get rid of the
"configure" warnings at the end of the ./configure --verbose output. I got rid
of all the potentially relevant ones (e.g. I didn't bother with CUPS) but to no
avail.
I ultimately "solved" the problem two different ways: I set up apache to work
as a proxy server (which got Firefox and Opera working) ...and then I got tired
of problems like this (with Wine, and with other software) and switched back to
32 bit linux. I've had no problems whatsoever with Wine on 32-bit.

I have a test program with two windows. The parent window has a custom window
procedure that handles WM_MOUSEACTIVATE. Depending on the selection in the child
window, the parent window can respond to WM_MOUSEACTIVATE with: MA_ACTIVATE,
MA_ACTIVATEANDEAT, MA_NOACTIVATE, MA_NOACTIVATEANDEAT.
On Windows, with focus on the child window:
1) MA_NOACTIVATEANDEAT prevents the parent window from getting focus when the
parent window's title bar is clicked
2) MA_NOACTIVATE and MA_NOACTIVATEANDEAT prevents the parent window from getting
focus when the parent window is clicked
3) MA_ACTIVATEANDEAT and MA_NOACTIVATEANDEAT prevents the parent window from
being closed when the parent window's close (X) button is clicked
On Wine, all three of these cases fail.

Hello,
--- quote ---
The next problem is that the installer tries to run
executables requiring msvcr80.dll, which requires activation context support.
--- quote ---
yes it's annoying.
There are some ways to work around the VC 8.x CRT manifest checks.
This works for all applications which use manifest bound executables (e.g.
compiled with #pragma comment(linker,”/manifestdependency:..” )
- pretend to be a pre-fusion OS (Windows NT, Windows 2000).
To do this, don't export "FindActCtxSectionStringW" from kernel32.dll
(remove it from kernel32.spec and recompile).
or
- pretend to be in .NET CLR context by having mscoree.dll and pgort80.dll
(profiler instrumentation runtime) loaded into memory.
The CRT explicitly looks for these dlls in memory, they just need to be
LoadLibrary()'d.
Loading fake dlls seems to succeed this one.
The following conditions need to be satisfied if previous ones failed:
- don't ever load any VC 8.x CRT sxs assemblies from system32 directory.
(requires loader override)
- implement FindActCtxSectionStringW to return a valid activation context
- dll was loaded from winsxs storage
or
- if loaded from another folder, manifest must reside in same folder
---
Summarizing, the removal of "FindActCtxSectionStringW" from kernel32 exports is
currently the fastest way to work around these problems.
For the time being (with no wine FindActCtxSectionStringW() impl in place) I
suggest a patch that comments out this export from kernel32.spec.
This would enable other bugreports which have sxs-related activation context
showstoppers to go further too.
Regards

Got the same issue myself. I get the following error:
This installation file does not exist:

(Button: Done).
Checking the temp folder, the file does exist, however, it is immediately
removed as soon as I click 'Done'. I suspect that the issue arises because of
the prepended '\' in front of C:\... but don't know how to work around that.
Joe
P.S. I'm using the latest version of Home (1.5) so maybe this is why the
workaround doesn't seem to work for me.

The Red hat/fedora binary link is broken.
Moreover, a link is not necessary since wine is included in extra repository of
fedora, and every new version is placed in extra/updates.
The best way to install the latest version is :
yum --enable-repo=* install wine

and found several issues:
- OpenJob16 failed (0xffff is returned), but printing is not aborted
(WritePrinter16 is called with 0xffff as HANDLE)
- StartDocW is called with Output == NULL
- "output" in PSDRV_CreateDC is an empty string,
but in a previous call, "LPT1:" was used as "output"
Please explain, what the App is doing, when you start printing.

I just went through my big log and discovered something:
Watching OpenFontFile first loads some files from corefonts package, different
fon file from the %windir%\fonts and then then the fonts provided by the game.
After that it starts to load the fon files from $(datadir)/wine/fonts.
So far nothing unusual.
But sserife.fon from that dir get loaded infinite lots of time. Starting with
h=1 ended it with h=3744 in my big log (58mb).
mv /usr/local/share/wine/fonts/sserife.fon /usr/local/share/wine/fonts/sserife.fon2
^^
this also works ;)

Because, as pointed out by this bug if you'd care to actually read it properly,
the issue is caused by the lack of certain fonts. Afaik from quickly scanning

patch to fix the install problem
Hi, the attached patch fixes the problem. It appeared CreateFileW ( user.ini)
failed with an ERROR_SHARING_VIOLATION. The file was created with GENERIC_READ
| GENERIC_WRITE, FILE_SHARE_READ | FILE_SHARE_WRITE , and after that
PROFILE_Open does a CreateFileW with only GENERIC_READ, FILE_SHARE_READ -->
ERROR_SHARING_VIOLATION.
Could someone confirm (or not ;)) if this fix is right?

The question is why does it goes into that codepath? When the right font is in
%windir%\fonts why does it think the loading has failed?
And for the "ARIALUNI.TTF-" that was just an attempt to see what happens if the
font is not exactly named.

ARIALUNI.TTF is loadded in both logs you attached, so that can't be the source
of the problem. Also I noticed something strange: in the bad log the font is
named "ARIALUNI.TTF-", in a good one "ARIALUNI.TTF". Notice a dash at the end
of file name in the bad log.

I looked again at the commit you keep calling a bad one. It makes Wine to load

I think this is a problem with the installer making the top-window
always-on-top and unmovable, I've seen this in a few games. It actually spawns
a box under the installer, asking for something. I was lucky enough to get it
spawned just outside the frame of the installer, so I could move it and see
what it was asking about. Screenshot added.

Well for me it seems the game goes into an infinite loop. Normally game needs
under 30sec to launch. But with wine it takes more then 10 minutes and Im still
not in the menu.
Looking at the log, there is a message: "In the beginning the Earth was without
form and void"
In current git the message comes over and over again. With git before the bad
commit, it appears only one time and then there appears something like "New
Game" which is clearly the text of one menu button.

Looking at the provided log I don't see anything wrong. Probably the fact that

and see if that works better (there was a patch included that helps in font
caching)?

Rest assured that we never break Wine on purpose. However we are talking about
1.8 million lines of code here. It's impossible to predict all areas that could
break when you change some features. There is only so much you can test, too.
Wine is still in "beta" stage. While a lot of things already work, this also
means that sometimes, things break, and the latest version isn't always the best
version.
Wine 0.9.39 should be out soon and fix those issues for you.

If you don't understand what "GIT" means - it is current development source
tree. When new version of Wine will come out (which will be 0.9.39 and NOT
0.9.38) it will be fixed there.

anything. Could you please tell me what i can do to debug this problem? I did
see this message:

Version 9.38 has broken Steam service. Any bug report
relating to Steam/Wine is marked a duplicate of bug 8572
and marked "solved", with a statement that the current git
has resolved this problem. It has not.
Version 9.38 has not and still does not now work properly
with Steam. Having donated to WIne, I hope that whatever
was done from version 9.37 to 9.38 to break Steam will not
be repeated in future versions.

Version: 0.9.38.
Platform: PC

After upgrading from 0.9.37 to 0.9.38-1 Steam will not load,
other windows apps will still function.
Upgrading from 0.9.38-1 to 0.9.38-2, Steam interface will
load up, but any Steam applications that are launched will
crash. Also, with 0.9.38-2 other game applications(non-Steam)
will run without sound regardless of configuration settings.
Version 0.9.37 was the last version if Wine I have found that
would function properly under Linux with game applications.
Hopefully version 0.9.39 will not follow the path of functional
degradation in game applications evident in versions 0.9.38-1
and 0.9.38-2.

Patchset sent to wine-patches tonight which should solve most of the (..)
problems (and support ELSE). There's a residual problem with the syntax
if 1==1 echo yes
So the title of the bug isnt fixed, but the test case uses quoted parms in the
if, and that should work once everything is committed.
(I'll test your testcase once the patches get into git, as I had a more
comprehensive testcase which included tests like this one and I've just shut
Linux down.)

For testing purposes it was pointed out that I should mention that even though
this game is pay-to-play, you can duplicate this bug without an account.
Download and install the game normally, then (thanks to the official support
forum for this trick) move the file "alice_client.config" up one folder, from:
Program Files\Time of Defiance (2006)\Assets\Time of Defiance
to...
Program Files\Time of Defiance (2006)\Assets
... then run AliceClient.exe from the root directly. Enter any login info you
want, the failure is on the next screen before it would authenticate you.

Dosbox (dosbox.sourceforge.net) handles programs with this problem. I know it's
not the solution some people would be looking for since it's an additional piece
of software and it's an emulator...but there may also be a lot said for putting
programs that are trying to access those low blocks of memory in an isolated
environment rather than working out the additional potentially convoluted memory
rerouting into Wine. Running them this way on a computer that was made around
the same time as the software would be problematic if anyone is masochistic
enough to be doing that however.

Another thing to try is using native oleaut32.
You can install both msvcrt and oleaut32 using winetricks (
http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks ). Run 'winetricks vcrun6' to install
msvcrt. Run 'winetricks dcom98' to try oleaut32.
Please report results using each individually, don't install them both and
report - we want to know which (msvcrt or oleaut32) has the problem.

Safari runs here too following the steps described above.
Main problems:
1. At almost any page the fonts aren't rendered. Exceptions so far:
www.apple.com seems to work
2. Scrolling up causes serious errors
3. Whole Safari window doesn't work right (e.g. couldn't resize it)
Hoping seeing progress on Safari since it would be nice to have Safari on Linux
beside FF, Opera and IE (through wine).
