------- Additional Comments From rnorton(a)bittorrent.com 2007-12-05 00:51 -------
The problem in uTorrent was that it was passing an item greater than the last
for the third parameter of CheckMenuRadioItem. Windows allows this but Wine does
not; Wine returns FALSE from CheckMenuRadioItem but does not set GetLastError as
well.
I've fixed this for upcoming uTorrent betas but for bug-for-bug compat wine
might want to look into this.

The application is Starsiege Tribes.
And I execute it using the command
"wineconsole Tribes.exe -dedicated"
In older versions of wine (0.9.16 was the one I tried) it actually starts the
console application and it opens a port for a telnet connection, but does not
start the actual server itself -- the game server, that is.
Does that help at all?
By the way, this is using 0.9.37 now... although the exact same problem is in
0.9.36. I tested a few other builds just before 0.9.36, but I'm not sure
exactly what versions they were, but this error was repeated.
Let me know if this helps -- I can offer any information you need. Heck, I'll
give you access to the box I'm running this on, if that's what you need.
Let me know what's up. =)
Thanks!

Sorry no demo available for this game.
I've tested with wine-0.9.37 too but it isn't on the list yet.
The game almost starts, and you even hear the sound from the splash screen for
less than a second before crashing.
The console output suggests this is related to multithreaded d3d, but other apps
that warn about that still work, so it might not be.

In my opinion, the installer should bypass the check on previous versions. It
shouldn't be Wine's problem to implement Microsoft's messy and aggravating
control policies. In fact this check is not even implemented in Windows XP.
How can we put the qualifying product in the CDROM when it is locked up with the
Office 2000 CD?

Little update on this bug for 2 reasons:
1. The download link is not valid any more so changed it.
2. this way it might get Anastasius' attention, as he tracked 2 bugs in

> I've installed at least dozens of InstallShield apps before and none have
locked up like this. Are you sure this hasn't created some other issue?
I don't know what you're referring to by 'this' and what the other issue would
be. Almost all installers that are disk I/O-intensive exhibit this behavior on
my machine, which is perfectly reasonable. The dialog code runs in a separate
thread from the action code, so it gets a time slice from the scheduler when it can.

No statements in this bug report infer that you are a 'newbie'. You should keep
up the non-newbiness by not posting to closed bugs and taking any concerns you
have to wine-devel.

That's not really a bug...IS installers are very cpu intensive. If you leave
the window in the foreground long enough, it'll eventually draw itself again.
Closing duplicate.

It does seem to copy now (without that error in the terminal) but CPU usage
shoots to 100% and the installshield window locks up entirely (progress isn't
drawn and if something is placed over the window and then moved, the
Installshield window doesn't redraw at all leaving whatever else was there.) But
that sounds like a different bug.
This was tested with .37 on a fresh .wine.
Still curious how you knew it was the other "Insert disc" bug, unless it just
happened to be similar and fixed by the same thing.

Anastasius, I'm not trying to work around using the installer to get the service
running. I'm trying to find the exact steps and workarounds needed to make the
installer complete successfully. Picky versioning aside, this installer is
pretty intimate with Windows internals and reveals a lot of holes in Wine.

Hello,
AFAIK wine has currently no ability to host dlls as services (what svchost.exe
does on windows).
BITS service is implemented as dll service (dump qmgr.dll exports and you will see).
For the installation... no need for the all dirty play.
You only need the .wine/drive_c -> .wine/harddiskvolume1 / dosdevices hack.
When it puts up the "pack not found" message box, go to setup temp folder, e.g.
"c:\<somerandomname>"
>From the subdir "sp1qfe" copy all dlls into system32 directory.
Run "bitsinst /setupservice" and it will create all necessary service registry
entries.
(look at "<somerandomname>\update\update_SP1QFE.inf" what infos are needed).
For the other entries (OLE servers and svchost), regsvr32 the copied dlls
(except xpob2res.dll which is a message/resource dll)
Additionally you need
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost
- REG_MULTI_SZ value named "BITSgroup", value = "BITS"
Copy svchost.exe from windows to wine system32
Start the service (using some tool "net start", "sc.ex" whatever) with "<tool>
start bits bits"
Notice the second service arg "bits" this is actually necessary because svchosts
service main thread proc helpers check service argv against service name
(without arg it crashes).
Other crashes are obviously wine shortcomings/bugs...
Regards

Preliminary workaround for Bug #7571 - Second version
Something along these lines, then? (Sorry, IÂ’m still not familiar with that
callback stuff you mentioned.)

DEFAULT_CHARSET
font.c:1374:enumerated ansi 0, symbol 9, russian 0 fonts for <empty>
SYMBOL_CHARSET
However, without the patch...
font.c:1223:Testing font <empty>, charset 1
font.c:1243:enumerated ansi 62, symbol 1, russian 20 fonts for NULL
font.c:1256:enumerated ansi 0, symbol 0, russian 0 fonts for <empty>

DEFAULT_CHARSET
font.c:1374:enumerated ansi 0, symbol 9, russian 0 fonts for <empty>

Now, how come didn't it trigger that ok() at line 1248?‽

This installer is a black hole, and I don't know why I keep trying to get it to
work :-) Here are the steps required to get as far as possible in the installer:
1) rename .wine/drive_c -> .wine/harddiskvolume1 and fixup dosdevices
2) copy c:\windows\system32\CatRoot* from Windows to Wine
3) Set version to Win XP in winecfg
4) Open regedit and change
HKLM\Systems\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows\CSDVersion from 0x200 to 0x100
5) Copy native hal.dll, schannel.dll, shdocvw.dll to system32
I'll post more steps if I figure anything else out.

Although MSDN (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms647464.aspx) doesnt
mention this case (subblock = null string), windows actually tolerates it.
Windows xp returns valid VS_FIXEDFILEINFO info data (same like root subblock
"\\" case).
Attached is a patch which fixes dlls/version/info.c VerQueryValueA and
VerQueryValueW to match windows behaviour.
To make as little code changes as possible, the root path is assigned on null
string case.
This allows clean processing as if the client has passed in "\\" subblock.
The version info is now correctly read and evaluated.
The app crashes later in main window due to other issues (might be user32/gdi32
related, needs further inspection -> file new bug reports).

What I wrote in the previous comment that xsltCompMatchPatternList matches
XSLPattern is not true. xsltCompMatchPatternList matches a pattern as in
<xsl:template match="..."> - it find nodes for which there exist a context node
such the the pattern matches and has a limited syntax compared to XPath. That's
why there were false positives. To match XPath queries for a given context node
one has to use xmlXPathEval. I've made some patches adding it.
The XSLPattern is a Microsoft's own language probably based on a working draft
of XSL. I couldn't find a specification but the differances with XPath that I've
found about are:
- The indexes starts from 0, not from 1
- It compares QNames, not expanded names (that what's needed by Civ4)
- Some tokens needs to be changed (see
http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/0900/xml/figures.asp#fig6)
- It has support to work with types defined in XDR schema
Except the last point, it should be possible to rewrite an XSLPattern into an
XPath query. If we can define custom functions in should be possible to do it
without parsing the XSLPattern - only we will need to tokenize it

You're obviously right on UDP not listening, sorry for the misleading comment. I
was not suggesting it's a leak, but if the same pattern is discernible every
time kad breaks, I'd ask myself why that happens, as the two things might be
indirectly related.
However, I'm going to try wireshark and report back any findings.

that.

I don't have a copy of Acrobat 4 to reproduce this with, but

says:

I've installed Adobe Acrobat Writer Version 4.0 in Wine. I've also installed
Autosketch (a light version of the AutoCAD drawing program) in Wine. I can
launch both programs okay in Wine. I want to print drawings made in Autosketch
as pdf files, but don't know how to set that up that function.
In Windows, after Acrobat Writer is installed, virtually any program that prints
documents can direct printing to a pdf file (pdf shows up as a 'printer' under
File>Print...>Printer). In Wine, the only printer that's shown in the Autosketch
printer menu is the actual physical printer on my system. How can I direct
printing to a pdf file in Wine?

The maximum value on that graph is 380, and assuming all the points are plotted,
your maximum number of open files was <= 380. The maximum number of open files
is at least 1024, so it wasn't maxed out when Kad went down, again confirming
that this bug is not caused by a resource leak.
As far as netstat goes, UDP sockets never LISTEN (that's only for stream sockets
like TCP), so all the netstat outputs I've seen on this page look perfectly
normal. What I suspect happens, is that (for some reason) wine stops polling the
socket, so emule no longer tries to receive any data. That would explain the
large (and, I suspect, non-decreasing) receive queue in the nestat outputs when
Kad breaks. I'll look over the logs this weekend and see whether that's what
happens.
You can help by using wireshark to capture all UDP traffic from emule, and
reporting whether there is any incoming/outgoing UDP from the Kad port after it
dies. The Kad port number should be 4672, unless you've set it to be chosen
randomly.

This graph has been created using lsof data for the emule process, logged every
minute. The vertical red line shows the moment when Kad is shut down, while the
blue line is a 50-minute moving average.
Just before Kad breaks, there is a noticeable increase in open files, and I
have one more graph from another session that shows pretty much the same thing.

As far as I know the paches from Stefan Doesinger (multithreaded d3d) are not
yet good enough for inclusion in git. The dsound patch is just a hack irc, so
will not be included. For the other 3 patches, i thought Peter Oberndorfer was
going to fix them up to sent to git, so i guess we'll just have to wait.....

1. Your patch has a lot of unnecessary whitespace changes, due to that it's
hard to see what it really does.
2. Perhaps EnumFontFamilies should have its own backend in freetype.c to avoid
introducing compatibility flags.

I suspect Henri Verbeet's texture coordinate loading fix fixed it. A fix
search would be cool, and may help with fixing the black/white issue too(but
check that on windows to be sure). Months ago git had a problem if the order
of bad and good was changed. I don't know if that has been fixed since, but to
be safe change the semantics of good and bad(good: loading screen broken, bad:
loading screen ok). Then you have good < bad as it usually works.

Creating a testcase made it clear. Windows does not respect the limit when
EM_REPLACESEL is used for text insertion. Possibly other methods don't respect
it either, I'm not sure. But the app uses EM_REPLACESEL to add text, and the
control allocates just enough to hold the extra and updates the limit at the
same time.
The testcase creates a RICHEDIT, sets the limit to 10, and then inserts 20 'a'
characters one at a time using EM_REPLACESEL. You can see in Windows, that the
limit is now 20, and you can freely edit up to 20 now. In wine, only 10 a's are
added.

I'm not sure if it helps, but here is a log of what gets output to the console

implemented is causing the missing parts of people. Turning vertex shaders and
pixel shaders on and off doesn't seem to do anything.

I was wrong, the EM_EXLIMITTEXT does make a difference.
Pre: 32767
EM_LIMITTEXT 0, 100000
POST: 100000
I ran the same code in Windows, and got the exact same results (pre=32767,
post=100000). This tells me that the default setting isn't the problem. Maybe
Windows doesn't respect the limit unless it's been explicitly set?? That seems
odd, else why would EM_GETLIMITTEXT return 32767 in Windows?
It's puzzling. I guess all I can say for sure is that using native solves the
problem, and so does running in Windows. I even tried it in windows 95 to see
if the NT kernal had an effect. Even in 95, the app doesn't freeze at 32767,
despite that's what the limit is returned by EM_LIMITTEXT.

Preliminary workaround for Bug #7571
As the summary says, this is a *preliminary* workaround for this bug; I know
itÂ’s ugly, even semantically ugly, but since MSDN says EnumFontFamiliesEx()'s
dwFlags parameter is reserved [1], it shouldnÂ’t break any applications.
I got the idea from MSDN’s statement that the EnumFontFamilies() “function is
provided only for compatibility with 16-bit versions of Windows. Applications
should use the EnumFontFamiliesEx() function”. [2]
Anyway, almost all previously failing tests passed, except for a single hiccup:
now the NULL family name doesnÂ’t enumerate any fonts for RUSSIAN_CHARSET, but I
still havenÂ’t been able to figure out why.
I repeat: I know this still needs some hammering. Any ideas, anyone? Dmitry?

The patches mentioned here were not applied because Alexandre didn't like the
apporach, and I don't have an immediate idea how to do it instead. However, it
doesn't really make sense to spend time fixing these patches to apply to current
git again.

That's interesting. The entry point into the DLL is failing in log 5. I'm not
sure what it's doing - perhaps repeating this case with a +relay would shed a
little more light. Then again, perhaps this case isn't worth considering:
either use both native rsaenh and crypt32, or both builtin.
I'm still not sure where the failure in rsaenh is. Could you try with an
up-to-date (GIT) version, just in case it's been fixed?

Hello,
well the auto-allocation is just linear with each .def entry increasing.
Windows export definitions are alphanumerically sorted.
Wine does the same.
Due to some exports missing, the next defined function in wine gets the ordinal
of the missing one and so on...
Example (user32.dll):
windows:
--- snip ---
ordinal hint RVA name
...
4 3 0005D2A6 AlignRects = _AlignRects@16
5 4 000461B4 AllowForegroundActivation = _AllowForegroundActivation@0
6 5 0001C477 AllowSetForegroundWindow = _AllowSetForegroundWindow@4
7 6 0001A024 AnimateWindow = _AnimateWindow@12
8 7 000599FF AnyPopup = _AnyPopup@0
...
--- snip ---
wine:
--- snip ---
...
AlignRects@16 @4
AllowSetForegroundWindow@4 @5
AnimateWindow@12 @6
AnyPopup@0 @7
...
--- snip ---
AllowForegroundActivation() isnt defined in wine so AllowSetForegroundWindow()
gets ordinal 5 where windows one is 6 (due to AllowForegroundActivation taken 5).
Even if we fill missing gaps (stubs/prototypes) to force a specific order, one
would have to re-check the list with every new Windows OS version for possible
insertion of new API functions (ordinal order changed).
Just mark this bug report/type either INVALID or WONTFIX.
Importing system dlls by ordinals only is bad ... NO-NO.
Maybe a bit off-topic: If needed i can supply missing prototypes for almost any
export. But the requests have to be specific :-)

When the ordinal differs across Windows versions it should be auto-allocated
(just like it is on Windows). Explicit ordinals should only be used when they
are guaranteed on Windows too. Francois Gouget has a script to check these, I
believe most spec files have been checked successfully against Windows.

i think that for system libraries as gdi32.dll which don't change too much it
would be better to make it work.... i read somewhere that for directx calls and
some others this technics is not recommended especially because ordinals change
too often (and these intros often work only on party computer where they are
shown and nowhere else and there is 'compatible version' which is bigger but
works on other pc's too)
but if its too much work for developers then i think its nothing extremely
important, 'real' applications and games never use this approach anyway

Hello,
just took this one as random pick.
The crash reason of the demos (probably written in .flat assembler) is simple:
all imports are by ordinal only.
This imposes problems because wine maintains most .spec files without explicit
ordinals.
If people add new/missing functions/exports without explicit ordinal spec they
get automatically assigned (linear from beginning).
These ordinals might not be the same as in windows.
Following is my analysis with one demo supplied by previous attachment
(all others suffer from same problem):
==============================
2mPasM.exe demo (4k):
Wrong imports by ordinal (wine):
--- snip ---
00401020 33 CharNextExW USER32
0040101C 97 DdeCreateStringHandleW USER32
00401018 269 GetMessageTime USER32
00401010 510 SetWindowLongW USER32
00401014 655 USER32_655 USER32
00401000 562 GDI32_562 GDI32
00401008 183 DefineDosDeviceW KERNEL32
--- snip ---
Correct imports by ordinal (used windows xp to dump imports)
--- snip ---
00401020 33 ChangeDisplaySettingsA USER32
0040101C 97 CreateWindowExA USER32
00401018 269 GetDC USER32
00401010 510 PeekMessageA USER32
00401014 655 ShowCursor USER32
00401000 562 SetPixel GDI32
00401008 183 ExitProcess KERNEL32
--- snip ---
Yes, this is bad practice, because Micro$oft doesnt guarantee that ordinal
numbers of the exports in Windows system Dlls are to be the same across
different Dll versions (usually do but no 100% guarantee).
I didnt search further, there could be more bug reports which suffer from same.
What's the developers consensus on this?
Either fix to match windows ordinals (.spec/export files could be cross checked
with script against windows ordinals) or mark all bug reports in this category
as invalid (broken apps).
Regards

the TTF's manually seemed to work ok. Still wine changes now and than but at
least problem is solved that it remains ledgable, and if it isn't i know how to

I see that there's a font button in WineCFG>>Desktop integration but it never

so marking it as a regression but it was ages since it was last tested so I'll
wait for some input before regression testing to see if someone can give me an
idea of when it may have broken.

I understand that wine needs something like Arial. But that still doesn't solve
the problem that wine switches randomly (sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't)
when a new TTF is installed. . .
Where can i get microsoft core TTF font pack? I copied the some TTF fonts from
my old winXP installation to /home/user/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts. It solved a
part of the problem, as wine is ledgable again, but wine still switches
"randomly" when a new TTF is installed.

If you don't know the component, just mark it wine-misc. Also, the error
message says it can't load dsetup(.dll). Is that file anywhere on the cd? On
another note, please always attach plain console output to the report before
attaching specific debug channel logs. There's nothing in the msi log that says
this bug is in msi.

Thank you.
Having loads of bugs open with description such as "program X doesn't work"
won't help fixing them any faster.
Here is a good write up about things you can do with such apps:
http://winehq.org/site/docs/wineusr-guide/bug-reporting
However I would recommend concentrating on fixing programs that do produce some
useful information. Or programs that at least indicate what's wrong.

Are you installing from a mounted ISO image? Either way, what is the volume
name of the disk?

Compile Wine normally with X support. Also make sure you do have xorg libraries
on the PC you want to run this on. Other then that it works fine (you'll have to
some how get required registry changes in).
This been tested with lots of people.

When installing civilization 3 a dialog stating unhandled exception pops up,

early.
There are some msi err: and ole err: messages, not sure of the exact component
at fault.

Created an attachment (id=6206)
--> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=6206&action=view)
debug output from wine 0.9.36
I'm using wine 0.9.36 and getting the page fault read messages as well.
I have also tried wine 0.9.15 and although I get the splash screen on that
version, it still crashes out.
Currently using wine 0.9.36 Ubuntu Package.
Log generated with following command:
:~$wine explorer.exe /desktop=name winedbg "C:\Program Files\Bullfrog\Dungeon
Keeper 2\DKII.exe" -32biteverything &> dk2_wine.log
The -32biteverything seems to prevent the
"fixme:x11drv:X11DRV_desktop_SetCurrentMode Cannot change screen BPP from 32 to
16" messages from appearing.

When closing a bug, a comment like "Fixed as of wine-0.9.29"
is a traditional and useful thing to say.

Once Wine sees a single TTF font installed it uses only TTF and builtin
bitmap fonts to render text. It seems that you have only a symbol font,
and Wine needs something like Arial installed.
Did you try to install the microsoft core TTF font pack? Did it help?

Mikko, that's a completely unrelated problem to the one this bug is about.
Most likely it's your locale that you need to adjust. If that doesn't help
open a new bug.
